Abstract:We prove a first principle of preservation of multiplicity in difference geometry, paving the way for the development of a more general intersection theory. In particular, the fibres of a \sigma-finite morphism between difference curves are all of the same size, when counted with correct multiplicities.

Abstract:For a reduced complex analytic curve germ we introduce an algebraic invariant we call the complete intersection discrepancy. We determine some of its basic properties. As an application we derive a multiplicity formula for the Milnor number of a reduced smoothable curve singularity generalizing a well-known formula due to Lê, Greuel and Teissier for complete intersection curves. We obtain a multiplicity characterization of Whitney equisingularity for families of locally smoothable curves.

Abstract:In this note, we reduce various conjectures in birational geometry, including Shokurov conjecture on singularities of the base of log Calabi-Yau fibrations of Fano type and boundedness conjecture for rationally connected Calabi-Yau varieties, to a conjecture on multiplicities of fibers of Fano fibrations over curves.

Abstract:We prove that pseudoholomorphic curves intersect complex 2-cycles positively in almost complex 4-manifolds. This makes possible a general and conceptually simple proof that an almost complex 4-manifold with many curves admits a taming symplectic structure, as envisioned by Gromov. Furthermore, we prove that the positivity of intersections between pseudoholomorphic curves is stable, in a geometric sense.

Abstract:Given a family of varieties over the projective line, we study the density of fibres that are everywhere locally soluble in the case that components of higher multiplicity are allowed. We use log geometry to formulate a new sparsity criterion for the existence of everywhere locally soluble fibres and formulate new conjectures that generalise previous work of Loughran-Smeets. These conjectures involve geometric invariants of the associated multiplicity orbifolds on the base of the fibration in the spirit of Campana. We give evidence for the conjectures using Chebotarev's theorem and sieve methods.

Abstract:A homotopical treatment of intersection cohomology recently developed by Chataur-Saralegui-Tanré associates a "perverse algebraic model" to every topological pseudomanifold, extending Sullivan's presentation of rational homotopy to intersection cohomology. In this context, there is a notion of "intersection-formality", measuring the vanishing of Massey products in intersection cohomology. In the present paper, we study the perverse algebraic model of complex projective varieties with isolated singularities. We endow such invariant with natural mixed Hodge structures. This allows us to prove some intersection-formality results for large families of complex projective varieties, such as isolated surface singularities and varieties of arbitrary dimension with ordinary isolated singularities.

Abstract:We prove two general factorization theorems for fixed-point invariants of fibrations: one for the Lefschetz number and one for the Reidemeister trace. These theorems imply the familiar multiplicativity results for the Lefschetz and Nielsen numbers of a fibration. Moreover, the proofs of these theorems are essentially formal, taking place in the abstract context of bicategorical traces. This makes generalizations to other contexts straightforward.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate singularities on fibrations and related topics. We prove a conjecture of Shokurov and McKernan on singularities on Fano type fibrations and a conjecture of the author on singularities on log Calabi-Yau fibrations. From these we derive a variant of a conjecture of McKernan and Prokhorov on rationally connected varieties with nef anti-canonical divisor. We discuss other applications including existence of bounded klt complements and gonality of fibres of del Pezzo fibrations. We prove a general result on controlling multiplicities of fibres of certain fibrations (not necessarily of Fano type) which is the key ingredient of the proofs of the above results.

Abstract:Deep Very Large Array radio observations are presented for the REFLEX clusters RXCJ0437.1+0043 and RXCJ1314.4-2515. They are at similar distance and show similar X-ray luminosity, but they are quite different in X-ray structure. Indeed RXCJ0437.1+0043 is regular and relaxed, whereas RXCJ1314.4-2515 is characterized by substructure and possible merging processes. The radio images reveal no diffuse emission in RXCJ0437.1+0043, and a complex diffuse structure in RXCJ1314.4-2515. The diffuse source in the latter cluster consists of a central radio halo which extends to the West toward the cluster periphery and bends to the North to form a possible relic. Another extended source is detected in the eastern cluster peripheral region. Although there could be plausible optical identifications for this source, it might also be a relic candidate owing to its very steep spectrum. The present results confirm the tight link between diffuse cluster radio sources and cluster merger processes.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the persistence of invariant tori in nearly integrable multiscale twist mappings with intersection property and high degeneracy in the integrable part. Such results are also presented for the mappings with distinct number of angles and actions, which affirms the existence of lower-dimensional invariant tori in such mappings. Hence we establish a Moser's theorem in multiscales.
On the Multiplicity One Conjecture for Mean Curvature Flows of surfaces

Abstract:We prove the Multiplicity One Conjecture for mean curvature flows of surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Specifically, we show that any blow-up limit of such mean curvature flows has multiplicity one. This has several applications. First, combining our work with results of Brendle and Choi-Haslhofer-Hershkovits-White, we show that any level set flow starting from an embedded surface diffeomorphic to a 2-spheres does not fatten. In fact, we obtain that the problem of evolving embedded 2-spheres via the mean curvature flow equation is well-posed within a natural class of singular solutions. Second, we use our result to remove an additional condition in recent work of Chodosh-Choi-Mantoulidis-Schulze. This shows that mean curvature flows starting from any generic embedded surface only incur cylindrical or spherical singularities. Third, our approach offers a new regularity theory for solutions of mean curvature flows that flow through singularities. Among other things, this theory also applies to the innermost and outermost flow of any embedded surface and shows that all singularity models of such flows must have multiplicity one. It also establishes equality of the fattening time with the discrepancy time. Lastly, we obtain a number of further results characterizing a separation phenomenon of mean curvature flows of surfaces.

Abstract:We offer a new proof of the Furstenberg-Katznelson multiple recurrence theorem for several commuting probability-preserving transformations T_1, T_2, >..., T_d: \bbZ\curvearrowright (X,§,\mu), and so, via the Furstenberg correspondence principle introduced in, a new proof of the multi-dimensional Szemeredi Theorem. We bypass the careful manipulation of certain towers of factors of a probability-preserving system that underlies the Furstenberg-Katznelson analysis, instead modifying an approach recently developed for the study of convergence of nonconventional ergodic averages to pass to a large extension of our original system in which this analysis greatly simplifies. The proof is then completed using an adaptation of arguments developed by Tao for his study of an infinitary analog of the hypergraph removal lemma. In a sense, this addresses the difficulty, highlighted by Tao, of establishing a direct connection between his infinitary, probabilistic approach to the hypergraph removal lemma and the infinitary, ergodic-theoretic approach to Szemeredi's Theorem set in motion by Furstenberg.

Abstract:We prove a conjecture of Bhatt-Hansen that derived pushforwards along proper morphisms of rigid-analytic spaces commute with Verdier duality on Zariski-constructible complexes. In particular, this yields duality statements for the intersection cohomology of proper rigid-analytic spaces. In our argument, we construct cycle classes in analytic geometry as well as trace maps for morphisms that are either smooth or proper or finite flat, with appropriate coefficients. As an application of our methods, we obtain new, significantly simplified proofs of $p$-adic Poincaré duality and the preservation of $\mathbf{F}_p$-local systems under smooth proper higher direct images.

Abstract:The flex locus parameterizes plane cubics with three collinear cocritical points under a projection, and the gothic locus arises from quadratic differentials with zeros at a fiber of the projection and with poles at the cocritical points. The flex and gothic loci provide the first example of a primitive, totally geodesic subvariety of moduli space and new ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$-invariant varieties in Teichmüller dynamics, as discovered by McMullen-Mukamel-Wright. In this paper we determine the divisor class of the flex locus as well as various tautological intersection numbers on the gothic locus. For the case of the gothic locus our result confirms numerically a conjecture of Chen-Möller-Sauvaget about computing sums of Lyapunov exponents for ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$-invariant varieties via intersection theory.

On Zariski multiplicity conjecture for quasihomogeneous surfaces with non-isolated singularities

Abstract:We consider a finitely determined map germ $f$ from $(\mathbb{C}^2,0)$ to $(\mathbb{C}^3,0)$. In this case, the double point curve $D(f)$ plays a fundamental role in studying the topology of the image of $f$. When $f$ is quasihomogeneous and has corank $1$, we present a characterization of the fold components of the double point curve $D(f)$. In our setting, we also consider Zariski multiplicity question for a pair of germs of (parametrized) quasihomogeneous surfaces $(\textbf{X},0)$ and $(\textbf{Y},0)$ in $(\mathbb{C}^3,0)$ with one dimensional singular set. Finally, we characterize Whitney equisingularity of an unfolding $\mathcal{F} =(f_t,t)$ of $f$ through the constancy of the Milnor number of a single plane curve in the source. This gives in some sense an answer to a question by Ruas in $1994$.

Abstract:We prove birational superrigidity of generic Fano fiber spaces $V/{\mathbb P}^1$, the fibers of which are Fano complete intersections of index 1 and dimension $M$ in ${\mathbb P}^{M+k}$, provided that $M\geq 2k+1$. The proof combines the traditional quadratic techniques of the method of maximal singularities with the linear techniques based on the connectedness principle of Shokurov and Koll\' ar. Certain related results are also considered.
