Abstract:In this paper we give lower bounds for the minimum distance of evaluation codes constructed from complete intersections in toric varieties. This generalizes the results of Gold-Little-Schenck and Ballico-Fontanari who considered evaluation codes on complete intersections in the projective space.

Abstract:We present in this paper efficient and robust algebraic algorithms for computing intersection curves between torus and natural quadrics used in CAD, namely sphere, cylinder and cone. A proper local coordinate system (LCS) is chosen first. Under the chosen LCS, cylinders and cones are parametrized by their line generators, and the problem of computing intersections between tori and cylinders or cones are converted to the line/torus intersection problem. Then, cases that the intersections are conic sections are identified and computed in geometrical and intuitive ways. For all other cases, discrete intersection points are computed and sorted to form intersection curves. For torus/sphere intersection, we present algorithms to compute the intersection curves directly from explicit algebraic representations.

Abstract:Toric codes are examples of evaluation codes. They are produced by evaluating homogeous polynomials of a fixed degree at the -rational points of a subset Y of a toric variety X . These codes reveal how algebraic geometry and coding theory are interrelated. The minimum distance of a code is the minimum number of nonzero entries in the codewords of the code. Let I ( Y ) be the ideal generated by all homogeneous polynomials vanishing at all the points of Y , which is also known as the vanishing ideal of Y . We give three algebraic algorithms computing the minimum distance by using commutative algebraic tools such as the multigraded Hilbert polynomials of ideals obtained from I ( Y ) and zero divisors f of I ( Y ), and primary decomposition of I ( Y ), for finding a homogeneous polynomial f among all homogeneous polynomials of the same degree which has the maximum number of roots on Y .

Abstract:The authors expand the results of J.Hansen and give two new Toric surface codes,calculate the dimension of the code by using the methods of cohomology and estimate the minimum distance relying on the intersection theory.The main purpose of the present paper is to show that the two codes corresponding two different polygons may have the same parameters.At last,the result that these new codes are the best at some finite field is also shown.

Abstract:A toric code, introduced by Hansen to extend the Reed-Solomon code as a $k$-dimensional subspace of $\mathbb{F}_q^n$, is determined by a toric variety or its associated integral convex polytope $P \subseteq [0,q-2]^n$, where $k=|P \cap \mathbb{Z}^n|$ (the number of integer lattice points of $P$). There are two relevant parameters that determine the quality of a code: the information rate, which measures how much information is contained in a single bit of each codeword; and the relative minimum distance, which measures how many errors can be corrected relative to how many bits each codeword has. Soprunov and Soprunova defined a good infinite family of codes to be a sequence of codes of unbounded polytope dimension such that neither the corresponding information rates nor relative minimum distances go to 0 in the limit. We examine different ways of constructing families of codes by considering polytope operations such as the join and direct sum. In doing so, we give conditions under which no good family can exist and strong evidence that there is no such good family of codes.

Abstract:We call a polytope terraced if upon projecting onto a one-dimensional coordinate space, each fiber of the projection is contained in the fiber below it. We present a technique to compute the minimum distance for toric codes arising from terraced polytopes. This technique is demonstrated by determining the minimum distance for all toric codes that correspond to smooth n –polytopes with n+2 facets. We also find the minimum distance for all toric codes coming from smooth polygons with five edges and from smooth polyhedra with six facets.

Abstract:This work is a natural continuation of our previous work [14]. In this paper, we give a complete classification of toric surface codes of dimension equal to 6, except a special pair, CP6(4) and CP6(5) over F8. Also, we give an example, CP6(5) and CP6(6) over F7, to illustrate that two monomially equivalent toric codes can be constructed from two lattice non-equivalent polygons.

Abstract:We develop an approach to study the irreducibility of generic complete intersections in the algebraic torus defined by equations with fixed monomials and fixed linear relations on coefficients. Using our approach we generalize the irreducibility theorems of Khovanskii to fields of arbitrary characteristic. Also we get a combinatorial sufficient conditions for irreducibility of engineered complete intersections. As an application we give a combinatorial condition of irreducibility for some critical loci and Thom-Bordmann strata: $f = f'_x = 0$, $f'_x = f'_y = 0$, $f = f'_x = f'_{xx} = 0$, etc.

Abstract:For every complete toric variety, there exists a projective toric variety which is isomorphic to it in codimension one. In this paper, we show that every smooth non-projective complete toric threefold of Picard number at most five becomes projective after a finite succession of flops or anti-flips.

Abstract:Type-A toric varieties may be obtained as GIT quotients with respect to a torus action with weights corresponding to roots of the group $SL(k)$ for some $k>1$. These varieties appear in various important applications, in particular, as normal cones to strata in moduli spaces of vector bundles. In this paper, we describe the intersection Betti numbers of these varieties, and those of some associated projective varieties. We present an elegant combinatorial model for these numbers, and, using the work of Hausel and Sturmfels, we show that the relevant intersection cohomology groups are endowed with a canonical product structure.

Abstract:Intersecting codes are linear codes where every two nonzero codewords have non-trivially intersecting support. In this article we expand on the theory of this family of codes, by showing that nondegenerate intersecting codes correspond to sets of points (with multiplicites) in a projective space that are not contained in two hyperplanes. This correspondence allows the use of geometric arguments to demonstrate properties and provide constructions of intersecting codes. We improve on existing bounds on their length and provide explicit constructions of short intersecting codes. Finally, generalizing a link between coding theory and the theory of the Davenport constant (a combinatorial invariant of finite abelian groups), we provide new asymptotic bounds on the weighted $2$-wise Davenport constant. These bounds then yield results on factorizations in rings of algebraic integers and related structures.

Abstract:Let $X\subset \mathbb P^d$ be a $m$-dimensional variety in $d$-dimensional projective space. Let $k$ be a positive integer such that $\binom{m+k}k \le d$. Consider the following interpolation problem: does there exist a variety $Y\subset \mathbb P^d$ of dimension $\le \binom{m+k}k -1$, with $X\subset Y$, such that the tangent space to $Y$ at a point $p\in X$ is equal to the $k$th osculating space to $X$ at $p$, for almost all points $p\in X$? In this paper we consider this question in the toric setting. We prove that if $X$ is toric, then there is a unique toric variety $Y$ solving the above interpolation problem. We identify $Y$ in the general case and we explicitly compute some of its invariants when $X$ is a toric curve.

Abstract:Soprunov and Soprunova introduced the notion of a good infinite family of toric codes. We prove that such good families do not exist by proving a more general Szemerédi-type result: for all $c\in(0,1]$ and all positive integers $N$, subsets of density at least $c$ in $\{0,1,\dots,N-1\}^n$ contain hypercubes of arbitrarily large dimension as $n$ grows.

Abstract:Given a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$, we introduce a new class of evaluation toric codes called edge codes derived from $\mathcal{H}$. We analyze these codes, focusing on determining their basic parameters. We provide estimations for the minimum distance, particularly in scenarios involving $d$-uniform clutters. Additionally, we demonstrate that these codes exhibit self-orthogonality. Furthermore, we compute the minimum distances of edge codes for all graphs with five vertices.

Abstract:Associated to any hypergraph is a toric ideal encoding the algebraic relations among its edges. We study these ideals and the combinatorics of their minimal generators, and derive general degree bounds for both uniform and non-uniform hypergraphs in terms of balanced hypergraph bicolorings, separators, and splitting sets. In turn, this provides complexity bounds for algebraic statistical models associated to hypergraphs. As two main applications, we recover a well-known complexity result for Markov bases of arbitrary 3-way tables, and we show that the defining ideal of the tangential variety is generated by quadratics and cubics in cumulant coordinates.

Abstract:We obtain a lower bound of the degree of irrationality of very general complete intersections over the complex field from the recent results of the first author and Chen--Stapleton. For combining these results, we make a minor adjustment of Chen--Stapleton's method using the trace map of differential modules.

Abstract:Let n be an even natural number. We compute the periods of any n 2 -dimensional complete intersection algebraic cycle inside an n-dimensional non-degenerated intersection of a projective simplicial toric variety. Using this information we determine the cycle class of such algebraic cycles. As part of the proof we develop a toric generalization of a classical theorem of Macaulay about complete intersection Artin Gorenstein rings, and we generalize an algebraic cup formula for residue forms due to Carlson and Griffiths to the toric setting.

Abstract:This is an addendum to the beautiful paper by Little and Schwarz (Appl Algebra Eng Commun Comput 18:349–367, 2007) in which one case of toric surface codes of dimension 5 was missing in their classification result of toric surface codes of dimension less than 6. Our main purpose is to fill the gap of this paper. We find that our new code ${C_{P_5^{(7)}}}$ enjoys more symmetry, and it has more codewords of minimum distance in general. However, over some special fields ${\mathbb{F}_{2^m}}$, ${C_{P_5^{(5)}}}$ and ${C_{P_5^{(7)}}}$ have the same number of the codewords of minimum distance.

Abstract:We prove a sheaf cohomology restriction (SCORE) formula for a class of vector bundles on complete intersections in toric varieties. The formula enables one to compute cohomology products on the complete intersection $X$ via computations on the ambient space $V$ and potentially compute certain quantum corrections to the classical sheaf cohomology ring. Schematically the formula reads $(s_1,...,s_r)_X = (s_1,...,s_r, g)_V$ with $g$ being an explicitly described quantity derived from the monad data of the bundle.

Abstract:There exist several homology theories for singular spaces that satisfy generalized Poincaré duality, including Goresky-MacPherson's intersection homology, Cheeger's $L^2$ cohomology and the homology of intersection spaces. The intersection homology and $L^2$ cohomology of toric varieties is known. Here, we compute the rational homology of intersection spaces of complex 3-dimensional toric varieties and compare it to intersection homology. To achieve this, we analyze cell structures and topological stratifications of these varieties and determine compatible structures on their singularity links. In particular, we compute the homology of links in 3-dimensional toric varieties. We find it convenient to use the concept of a rational homology stratification. It turns out that the intersection space homology of a toric variety, contrary to its intersection homology, is not combinatorially invariant and thus retains more refined information on the defining fan.
