Abstract:High-frequency dielectric studies of Bi_0.85Nd_0.15FeO_3 ceramics performed betweeen 100 and 900 K reveal hardening of most polar phonons on cooling below antiferroelectric phase transition, which occurs near 600 K. Moreover, a strong THz dielectric relaxation is seen in paraelectric phase. Its relaxation frequency softens on cooling towards Tc ~ 600 K, its dielectric strength simultaneously decreases and finaly the relaxation disappears from the spectra below 450 K. Both phonon and dielectric relaxation behavior is responsible for a decrease in the dielectric permittivity at the antiferroelectric phase transition. Origin of unusual strong THz dielectric relaxation in paraelectric phase is discussed. Bi_0.85Nd_0.15FeO_3 structrure lies on the phase boundary between polar rhombohedral and non-polar orthorhombic phase and owing to this the polarization rotation and polarization extension can enhance the piezoelectric response of this system. Similarities and discrepancies with lead-based piezoelectric perovskites, exhibiting morphotrophic phase boundary between two ferroelectric phases, are discussed.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to study the relationship between dielectric properties and structural phase transitions in the multiferroic material Bi\(_{0.85}\)Nd\(_{0.15}\)FeO\(_3\) (BNFO), especially the behavior in the terahertz (THz) and infrared (IR) frequency ranges. Specifically, the authors focus on the following aspects: 1. **Characteristics of antiferroelectric phase transitions**: - The change in dielectric constant ε* of BNFO ceramics in the temperature range from 100 to 900 K was studied. - It was observed that near the antiferroelectric phase transition temperature (T\(_C\) ≈ 600 K), most polar phonons hardened, and a strong THz dielectric relaxation phenomenon occurred in the paraelectric phase. 2. **Origin of THz dielectric relaxation**: - The origin of the strong THz dielectric relaxation observed in the paraelectric phase and its relationship with the strong piezoelectric response were explored. - The behavior of the relaxation frequency and dielectric strength changing with decreasing temperature was analyzed, and finally the relaxation phenomenon disappeared below 450 K. 3. **Effect of structural phase transitions on dielectric properties**: - The change in dielectric constant and the decrease in phonon contribution during the transition from the paraelectric phase to the antiferroelectric phase were described. - The effect of this phase transition on the dielectric constant, especially the decrease in dielectric constant due to phonon hardening, was discussed. 4. **Comparison with lead - based piezoelectric ceramics**: - The dielectric relaxation behaviors of BNFO and other lead - based piezoelectric ceramics (such as Pb(Zr\(_x\)Ti\(_{1 - x}\)O\(_3\))) near the phase boundary were compared. - The enhancement effect of polarization rotation and expansion of BNFO near the phase boundary on its piezoelectric properties was explored. Through these studies, the authors aim to reveal the dielectric behavior of BNFO at high temperatures and the underlying physical mechanisms, providing theoretical support for the further development of high - performance multiferroic materials.
