Abstract:For a class of dynamical systems, the cookie-cutter maps, we prove that the Lyapunov spectrum coincides with the map given by the Newton-Raphson method applied to the derivative of the pressure function.

Abstract:We consider MRL maps (Markov-Renyi-Lüroth), a class of interval maps with infinitely many branches that can have parabolic fixed points. We prove that for every MRL map $T$, the Lyapunov spectrum can be expressed in terms of the Legendre transform of the topological pressure of $-t\log|T'|$, generalizing previous results in the area. We also show that the Lyapunov spectrum coincides with a function directly related to the Newton-Raphson method applied to the topological pressure of $-t\log|T'|$.

Abstract:It is known that the Lyapunov exponent is not continuous at certain points in the space of continuous quasi-periodic cocycles. We show that the Lyapunov exponent is continuous for a higher-dimensional analytic category in this paper. It has a modulus of continuity of the form exp(−∣logt∣ σ ) for some 0 < σ < 1.

Abstract:The asymptotic Lyapunov stability with probability one of multi-degree-of-freedom quasi-Hamiltonian systems subject to parametric excitations of combined Gaussian and Poisson white noises is studied by using Lyapunov function method. According to the integrability and resonance, quasi-Hamiltonian systems can be divided into five classes, namely quasi-non-integrable, quasi-completely integrable and non-resonant, quasi-completely integrable and resonant, quasi-partially integrable and non-resonant, and quasi-partially integrable and resonant. Lyapunov functions for these five classes of systems are constructed. The derivatives for these Lyapunov functions with respect to time are obtained by using the stochastic averaging method. The approximately sufficient condition for the asymptotic Lyapunov stability with probability one of quasi-Hamiltonian system under parametric excitations of combined Gaussian and Poisson white noises is determined based on a theorem due to Khasminskii. Four examples are given to illustrate the application and efficiency of the proposed method. And the results are compared with the corresponding necessary and sufficient condition obtained by using the largest Lyapunov exponent method.

Abstract:The Riemann Hypothesis is the main open problem of Number Theory and several scientists are trying to solve this problem. In this regard, in a recent work [8], a difference equation has been proposed that calculates the nth non-trivial zero in the critical range. In this work, we seek to optimize this estimation by calculating Lyapunov numbers for this non-linear map in order to seek the best value for the bifurcation parameter. Analytical results are presented.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the dynamics of Newton maps for arbitrary polynomials. Let $p$ be an arbitrary polynomial with at least three distinct roots, and $f$ be its Newton map. It is shown that the boundary $\partial B$ of any immediate root basin $B$ of $f$ is locally connected. Moreover, $\partial B$ is a Jordan curve if and only if ${\rm deg}(f|_B)=2$. This implies that the boundaries of all components of root basins, for all polynomials' Newton maps, from the viewpoint of topology, are tame.

Abstract:This work investigates a dynamical system functioning as a nonsmooth adaptation of the continuous Newton method, aimed at minimizing the sum of a primal lower-regular and a locally Lipschitz function, both potentially nonsmooth. The classical Newton method's second-order information is extended by incorporating the graphical derivative of a locally Lipschitz mapping. Specifically, we analyze the existence and uniqueness of solutions, along with the asymptotic behavior of the system's trajectories. Conditions for convergence and respective convergence rates are established under two distinct scenarios: strong metric subregularity and satisfaction of the Kurdyka-Lojasiewicz inequality.

The corresponding notion for nonlinear systems is that of spectral submanifolds—manifolds invariant under the full nonlinear dynamics that are determined by their tangency to spectral subspaces of the linearized system. In light of the recently emerged interest in their use as tools in model reduction, we propose an extension of the relevant theory to the realm of fluid dynamics. We show the existence of a large (and the most pertinent) subclass of spectral submanifolds and foliations—describing the behavior of nearby trajectories—about fixed points and periodic orbits of the Navier–Stokes equations. Their uniqueness and smoothness properties are discussed in detail, due to their significance from the perspective of model reduction. The machinery is then put to work via a numerical algorithm developed along the lines of the parameterization method, which computes the desired manifolds as power series expansions. Results are shown within the context of two-dimensional channel flows.

The Lorenz system as a gradient-like system

Abstract:We formulate, for continuous-time dynamical systems, a sufficient condition to be a gradient-like system, i.e. that all bounded trajectories approach stationary points and therefore that periodic orbits, chaotic attractors, etc. do not exist. This condition is based upon the existence of an auxiliary function defined over the state space of the system, in a way analogous to a Lyapunov function for the stability of an equilibrium. For polynomial systems, Lyapunov functions can be found computationally by using sum-of-squares optimisation. We demonstrate this method by finding such an auxiliary function for the Lorenz system. We are able to show that the system is gradient-like for $0\leq\rho\leq12$ when $\sigma=10$ and $\beta=8/3$, significantly extending previous results. The results are rigorously validated by a novel procedure: First, an approximate numerical solution is found using finite-precision floating-point sum-of-squares optimisation. We then prove that there exists an exact solution close to this using interval arithmetic.

Abstract:The dynamical systems of trigonometric functions are explored, with a focus on sz=sin(z) and the fractal image created by iterating the Newton map, Fs(z), of s(z). The basins of attraction created from iterating Fs(z) are analyzed, and some bounds are determined for the primary basins of attraction. We further prove x and y-axis symmetry of the Newton map as well as some interesting results on periodic points on the real axis.

Dynamics of projectable functions: Towards an atlas of wandering domains for a family of Newton maps

Abstract:We present a one-parameter family $F_\lambda$ of transcendental entire functions with zeros, whose Newton's method yields wandering domains, coexisting with the basins of the roots of $F_\lambda$. Wandering domains for Newton maps of zero-free functions have been built before by, e.g., Buff and Rückert based on the lifting method. This procedure is suited to our Newton maps as members of the class of projectable functions (or maps of the cylinder), i.e. transcendental meromorphic functions $f(z)$ in the complex plane that are semiconjugate, via the exponential, to some map $g(w)$, which may have at most a countable number of essential singularities. In this paper we make a systematic study of the general relation (dynamical and otherwise) between $f$ and $g$, and inspect the extension of the logarithmic lifting method of periodic Fatou components to our context, especially for those $g$ of finite-type. We apply these results to characterize the entire functions with zeros whose Newton's method projects to some map $g$ which is defined at both $0$ and $\infty$. The family $F_\lambda$ is the simplest in this class, and its parameter space shows open sets of $\lambda$-values in which the Newton map exhibits wandering or Baker domains, in both cases regions of initial conditions where Newton's root-finding method fails.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper we study ergodic optimization and multifractal behavior of Lyapunov exponents for matrix cocycles. We show that the restricted variational principle holds for generic cocycles [in the sense of (Bonatti and Viana in Ergod Theory Dyn Syst 24(5):1295–1330, 2004)] over mixing subshifts of finite type. We also show that the Lyapunov spectrum is equal to the closure of the set where the entropy spectrum is positive for such cocycles. Abstract:In this paper, we give a quantitative estimate for the first N Lyapunov exponents for random perturbations of a natural class of 2N-dimensional volume-preserving systems exhibiting strong hyperbolicity on a large but noninvariant subset of the phase space. Concrete models covered by our setting include systems of coupled standard maps, in both ‘weak’ and ‘strong’ coupling regimes.

Abstract:The threshold, or saturation phenomenon of spatially coupled systems is revisited in the light of Lyapunov's theory of dynamical systems. It is shown that an application of Lyapunov's direct method can be used to quantitatively describe the threshold phenomenon, prove convergence, and compute threshold values. This provides a general proof methodology for the various systems recently studied.

Abstract:We consider a large class of 2D area-preserving diffeomorphisms that are not uniformly hyperbolic but have strong hyperbolicity properties on large regions of their phase spaces. A prime example is the standard map. Lower bounds for Lyapunov exponents of such systems are very hard to estimate, due to the potential switching of stable and unstable directions. This paper shows that with the addition of (very) small random perturbations, one obtains with relative ease Lyapunov exponents reflecting the geometry of the deterministic maps.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a smooth, closed and connected manifold of dimension $n\in\mathbb{N}$, endowed with a Riemannian metric $g$. Moreover, let $\mathcal{B}$ be an $(n+1)$-dimensional compact manifold with boundary equal to $\mathcal{M}$. Endow $\mathcal{B}$ with a Riemannian metric $h$ such that, in local coordinates $(x,y)\in [0,1)\times \mathcal{M}$ on the collar part of the boundary, it admits the warped product form $h=dx^{2}+x^{2}g(y)$. We consider the homogeneous heat equation on $(\mathcal{B},h)$ and find an arbitrary long asymptotic expansion of the solutions with respect to $x$ near $0$. It turns out that the spectrum of the Laplacian on $(\mathcal{M},g)$ determines explicitly the above asymptotic expansion and vice versa.

Abstract:We consider stochastic differential equations, obtained by adding weak Gaussian white noise to ordinary differential equations admitting $N$ asymptotically stable periodic orbits. We construct a discrete-time, continuous-space Markov chain, called a random Poincaré map, which encodes the metastable behaviour of the system. We show that this process admits exactly $N$ eigenvalues which are exponentially close to $1$, and provide expressions for these eigenvalues and their left and right eigenfunctions in terms of committor functions of neighbourhoods of periodic orbits. The eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are well-approximated by principal eigenvalues and quasistationary distributions of processes killed upon hitting some of these neighbourhoods. The proofs rely on Feynman--Kac-type representation formulas for eigenfunctions, Doob's $h$-transform, spectral theory of compact operators, and a recently discovered detailed-balance property satisfied by committor functions.
