Abstract:We report a measurement of the positive muon lifetime to a precision of 1.0 parts per million (ppm); it is the most precise particle lifetime ever measured. The experiment used a time-structured, low-energy muon beam and a segmented plastic scintillator array to record more than 2 x 10^{12} decays. Two different stopping target configurations were employed in independent data-taking periods. The combined results give tau_{mu^+}(MuLan) = 2196980.3(2.2) ps, more than 15 times as precise as any previous experiment. The muon lifetime gives the most precise value for the Fermi constant: G_F(MuLan) = 1.1663788 (7) x 10^-5 GeV^-2 (0.6 ppm). It is also used to extract the mu^-p singlet capture rate, which determines the proton's weak induced pseudoscalar coupling g_P.

Abstract:The Fermi Constant, G_F, describes the strength of the weak force and is determined most precisely from the mean life of the positive muon, tau_mu. Advances in theory have reduced the theoretical uncertainty on G_F as calculated from tau_mu to a few tenths of a part per million (ppm). Until recently, the remaining uncertainty on G_F was entirely experimental and dominated by the uncertainty on tau_mu. We report the MuLan collaboration's recent 1.0 ppm measurement of the positive muon lifetime. This measurement is over a factor of 15 more precise than any previous measurement, and is the most precise particle lifetime ever measured. The experiment used a time-structured low-energy muon beam and an array of plastic scintillators read-out by waveform digitizers and a fast data acquisition system to record over 2 times 10^{12} muon decays. Two different in-vacuum muon-stopping targets were used in separate data-taking periods. The results from these two data-taking periods are in excellent agreement. The combined results give tau_{mu^+}({MuLan})=2196980.3(2.2) ps. This measurement of the muon lifetime gives the most precise value for the Fermi Constant: G_F({MuLan}) = 1.1663788 (7) \times 10^{-5} {GeV}^{-2} (0.6 ppm). The lifetime is also used to extract the mu^-p singlet capture rate, which determines the proton's weak induced pseudoscalar coupling g_P.

From a total of 1.6 x 10^{12} decays, we obtained the muon lifetime tau_mu = 2196980.3(2.2) ps (1.0 ppm) and Fermi constant G_F = 1.1663787(6) x 10^{-5} GeV^{-2} (0.5 ppm).

Abstract:The part-per-million measurement of the positive muon lifetime and determination of the Fermi constant by the MuLan experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute is reviewed. The experiment used an innovative, time-structured, surface muon beam and a near-4pi, finely-segmented, plastic scintillator positron detector. Two in-vacuum muon stopping targets were used: a ferromagnetic foil with a large internal magnetic field, and a quartz crystal in a moderate external magnetic field. The experiment obtained a muon lifetime 2 196 980.3(2.2) ps (1.0 ppm) and a Fermi constant 1.166 378 7(6) 10^-5 GeV^-2 (0.5 ppm). The thirty-fold improvement in the muon lifetime has proven valuable for precision measurements in nuclear muon capture and the commensurate improvement in the Fermi constant has proven valuable for precision tests of the standard model.

Abstract:The Fermi constant, G_F, describes the strength of the weak force and is determined most precisely from the mean life of the positive muon, tau_mu. Advances in theory have reduced the theoretical uncertainty on G_F as calculated from tau_mu to a few tenths of a part per million (ppm). The remaining uncertainty on G_F is entirely experimental, and is dominated by the uncertainty on tau_mu. The MuLan experiment is designed to measure the muon lifetime to part-per-million precision, a better-than twenty-fold improvement over the previous generation of experiments. In 2007, we reported an intermediate result, tau_mu=2.197013(24) microseconds (11 ppm), which is in excellent agreement with the previous world average. This mean life was measured using a pulsed surface muon beam stopped in a ferromagnetic target, surrounded by a symmetric scintillator detector array. Since this intermediate measurement, the detector was instrumented with waveform digitizers, the muon beam rate and beam extinction were increased, and two data sets were acquired on different targets, each containing over 10^12 muon decays. These data will lead to a new determination of G_F to better than a part per million.

Abstract:We survey a new generation of precision muon lifetime experiments. The goal of the MuCap experiment is a determination of the rate for muon capture on the free proton to 1 percent, from which the induced pseudoscalar form factor $g_P$ of the nucleon can be derived with 7 percent precision. A measurement of the related $\mu$d capture process with similar precision would provide unique information on the axial current in the two nucleon system, relevant for fundamental neutrino reactions on deuterium. The MuLan experiment aims to measure the positive muon lifetime with 20 fold improved precision compared to present knowledge in order to determine the Fermi Coupling Constant $G_F$ to better than 1 ppm.

Abstract:The muLan experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute will measure the lifetime of the positive muon with a precision of 1 ppm, giving a value for the Fermi coupling constant G_F at the level of 0.5 ppm. Meanwhile, by measuring the observed lifetime of the negative muon in pure hydrogen, the muCap experiment will determine the rate of muon capture, giving the proton's pseudoscalar coupling g_p to 7%. This coupling can be calculated precisely from heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory and therefore permits a test of QCD's chiral symmetry.

Abstract:We discuss two precision experiments which will measure fundamental weak interaction parameters: MuLAN's goal is the measurement of the positive muon lifetime to 1 ppm, which will in turn determine the Fermi coupling constant G_F to 0.5 ppm precision. MuCAP is the first experiment which will unambiguously determine the induced pseudoscalar form factor of the proton, g_p. While contradictory experimental results for g_p are under discussion, firm theoretical calculations on the percent level within the framework of Chiral Perturbation Theory are now challenging the measurements. We will describe our experimental efforts and latest achievements.

Abstract:The complete 2-loop quantum electrodynamic corrections to the muon lifetime are calculated in the Fermi theory. The exact result for the effects of virtual and real photons, virtual electrons, muons as well as e+e- pair creation is Delta Gamma_QED = Gamma_0(alpha/pi)^2[(156815/5184)-(1036/27)zeta(2)-(895/36)zeta(3) +(67/8)zeta(4)+53zeta(2)ln(2)] = Gamma_0(alpha/pi)^2(6.743) where Gamma_0 is the tree-level width. The theoretical error in the value of the Fermi coupling constant, G_F, is now rendered negligible compared to the experimental uncertainty coming from the measurement of the muon lifetime. The overall error in G_F is then roughly halved giving G_F = (1.16637 +/- 0.00001) x 10^(-5) GeV^(-2).

Abstract:The anomalous magnetic moment of the negative muon has been measured to a precision of 0.7 ppm (ppm) at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. This result is based on data collected in 2001, and is over an order of magnitude more precise than the previous measurement for the negative muon. The result a(mu(-))=11 659 214(8)(3) x 10(-10) (0.7 ppm), where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic, is consistent with previous measurements of the anomaly for the positive and the negative muon. The average of the measurements of the muon anomaly is a(mu)(exp)=11 659 208(6) x 10(-10) (0.5 ppm).

Abstract:Our recent series of measurements at Brookhaven National Laboratory determined the muon anomalous magnetic moment \amu to a precision of 0.5 ppm. The final result--representing the average of five running periods using both positive and negative muons--is $\amu ^\pm = 11 659 208(6) \times 10^{-10}$. It lies 2.7 standard deviations above the standard model expectation, which is based on updates given at this Workshop. Importantly, only the $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation and new KLOE radiative return data are used for the hadronic vacuum polarization input. Because the systematic limit has not been reached in the experiment, a new effort has been proposed and approved with the highest scientific priority at Brookhaven. The goal is an experimental uncertainty of 0.2 ppm, a 2.5-fold reduction in the overall experimental uncertainty. To do so will require a suite of upgrades and several qualitative changes in the philosophy of how the measurement is carried out. I discuss the old and new experiments with a particular emphasis on the technical matters that require change for the future.

Abstract:Precision measurements of fundamental quantities have played a key role in pointing the way forward in developing our understanding of the universe. Though the enormously successful Standard Model (SM) describes the breadth of both historical and modern experimental particle physics data, it is necessarily incomplete. The muon $g-2$ experiment executed at Brookhaven concluded in 2001 and measured a discrepancy of more than three standard deviations compared to the Standard Model calculation. Arguably, this remains the strongest hint of physics beyond the SM. A new initiative at Fermilab is under construction to improve the experimental accuracy four-fold. The current status is presented here.

Abstract:We present details on a new measurement of the muon magnetic anomaly, $a_\mu = (g_\mu -2)/2$. The result is based on positive muon data taken at Fermilab's Muon Campus during the 2019 and 2020 accelerator runs. The measurement uses $3.1$ GeV$/c$ polarized muons stored in a $7.1$-m-radius storage ring with a $1.45$ T uniform magnetic field. The value of $ a_{\mu}$ is determined from the measured difference between the muon spin precession frequency and its cyclotron frequency. This difference is normalized to the strength of the magnetic field, measured using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). The ratio is then corrected for small contributions from beam motion, beam dispersion, and transient magnetic fields. We measure $a_\mu = 116 592 057 (25) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.21 ppm). This is the world's most precise measurement of this quantity and represents a factor of $2.2$ improvement over our previous result based on the 2018 dataset. In combination, the two datasets yield $a_\mu(\text{FNAL}) = 116 592 055 (24) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.20 ppm). Combining this with the measurements from Brookhaven National Laboratory for both positive and negative muons, the new world average is $a_\mu$(exp) $ = 116 592 059 (22) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.19 ppm).

Abstract:The muon g-2 experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory measures the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $a_\mu$, very precisely. This measurement tests the Standard Model. The analysis for the data collected in 2000 (a $\mu^+$ run) is completed and the accuracy on $a_\mu$ is improved to 0.7 ppm, including statistical and systematic errors. The data analysis was performed blindly between the precession frequency and the field analysis groups in order to prevent a possible bias in the $a_\mu$ result. The result is $a_{\mu}({\rm exp}) = 11~659~204(7)(5) \times 10^{-10}$ (0.7 ppm). This paper features a detailed description of one of the four analyses and an update of the theory.

Abstract:We present the first results of the Fermilab Muon g-2 Experiment for the positive muon magnetic anomaly $a_\mu \equiv (g_\mu-2)/2$. The anomaly is determined from the precision measurements of two angular frequencies. Intensity variation of high-energy positrons from muon decays directly encodes the difference frequency $\omega_a$ between the spin-precession and cyclotron frequencies for polarized muons in a magnetic storage ring. The storage ring magnetic field is measured using nuclear magnetic resonance probes calibrated in terms of the equivalent proton spin precession frequency ${\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p}$ in a spherical water sample at 34.7$^{\circ}$C. The ratio $\omega_a / {\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p}$, together with known fundamental constants, determines $a_\mu({\rm FNAL}) = 116\,592\,040(54)\times 10^{-11}$ (0.46\,ppm). The result is 3.3 standard deviations greater than the standard model prediction and is in excellent agreement with the previous Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) E821 measurement. New results from the Muon g-2 Experiment

Abstract:The Muon g-2 experiment at Fermilab has published the first result on Run-1 dataset in 2021 showing a good agreement with the previous experimental result at Brookhaven National Laboratory at comparable precision (0.46 ppm). In August 2023 we released our new result from Run-2 and Run-3 datasets which allowed to measure $a_\mu$ to 0.21 ppm, a more than two-fold improved precision respect to Run-1, and which allowed to reach a precision of 0.20 ppm when combined with the Run-1 result. We will discuss the improvements of the Run-2/3 analysis respect to Run-1, the current status of the theory prediction, and the future prospects.

Abstract:The magnetic moment is a fundamental property of particles. The measurement of these magnetic moments and the comparison with the values predicted by the standard model of particle physics is a way to test our understanding of the fundamental building blocks of our world. In some cases, such as for the electron, this comparison has resulted in confirmation of the standard model with incredible precision. In contrast, the magnetic moment of the muon has shown a long-standing disagreement in the measured and the predicted value. There is currently a tantalizing three-standard-deviation difference between the current best measurement (with a precision of 0.54 ppm) and the state-of-the-art standard model prediction. This represents one of the very few experimental hints for physics beyond the standard model. There are currently two major experimental efforts underway to improve the precision of the muon magnetic moment measurement. The first is an evolution of the E-821 experiment, originally located at Brookhaven National Laboratory in the United States. This is experiment, E-989, is located at Fermilab and will measure the spin precession rate of positive muons in a 14-m diameter storage ring using decay positrons. The goal of the experiment is to reduce the current experimental uncertainty by a factor of three. The experiment is currently being constructed and aims to start taking data in 2017. An alternative, and very complementary, experiment is being planned at J-PARC in Japan. This experiment, E-34, will utilize low energy, ultra-cold muons in a much smaller storage ring. This experiment aims for a similar precision to the Fermilab experiment and aims to begin data taking on a similar timescale.
