Abstract: It is known that for each combinatorial type of convex 3-dimensional polyhedra, there is a representative with edges tangent to the unit sphere. This representative is unique up to projective transformations that fix the unit sphere.

Abstract:A convex geometry is a closure system satisfying the anti-exchange property. This paper, following the work of Adaricheva and Bolat (2019) and the Polymath REU (2020), continues to investigate representations of convex geometries with small convex dimension by convex shapes on the plane and in spaces of higher dimension. In particular, we answer in the negative the question raised by Polymath REU (2020): whether every convex geometry of $cdim=3$ is representable by the circles on the plane. We show there are geometries of $cdim=3$ that cannot be represented by spheres in any $\mathbb{R}^k$, and this connects to posets not representable by spheres from the paper of Felsner, Fishburn and Trotter (1999). On the positive side, we use the result of Kincses (2015) to show that every finite poset is an ellipsoid order.

Abstract:A string polytope is a rational convex polytope whose lattice points parametrize a highest weight crystal basis, which is obtained from a string cone by explicit affine inequalities depending on a highest weight. It also inherits geometric information of a flag variety such as toric degenerations, Newton-Okounkov bodies, mirror symmetry, Schubert calculus, and so on. In this paper, we study combinatorial properties of string polytopes in types $B$ and $C$ by giving an explicit description of string cones in these types which is analogous to Gleizer-Postnikov's description of string cones in type $A$. As an application, we characterize string polytopes in type $C$ which are unimodularly equivalent to the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope in type $C$ for a specific highest weight.

The Burau representation and shapes of polyhedra

Abstract:We use a geometric approach to show that the reduced Burau representation specialized at roots of unity has another incarnation as the monodromy representation of a moduli space of Euclidean cone metrics on the sphere, as described by Thurston. Using the theory of orbifolds, we leverage this connection to identify the kernels of these specializations in some cases, partially addressing a conjecture of Squier. The 4-strand case is the last case where the faithfulness question for the Burau representation is unknown, a question that is related e.g. to the question of whether the Jones polynomial detects the unknot. Our results allow us to place the kernel of this representation in the intersection of several topologically natural subgroups of $B_4$.

Abstract:A regular map is an abstract generalization of a Platonic solid. It describes a group, a topological cell decomposition of a 2-manifold of type {p, q} with only p-gons, such that q of them meet at each vertex in a circular manner, and we have maximal combinatorial symmetry, expressed by the flag transitivity of the symmetry group. On the one hand, we have articles on topological surface embeddings of regular maps by F. Razafindrazaka and K. Polthier, C. Séquin, and J. J. van Wijk.On the other hand, we have articles with polyhedral embeddings of regular maps by J. Bokowski and M. Cuntz, A. Boole Stott, U. Brehm, H. S. M. Coxeter, B. Grünbaum, E. Schulte, and J. M. Wills. The main concern of this partial survey article is to emphasize that all these articles should be seen as contributing to the common body of knowledge in the area of regular map embeddings. This article additionally provides a method for finding symmetrical equivelar polyhedral embeddings of type {3, 7} based on symmetrical graph embeddings on convex surfaces.

Abstract:A spherical polyhedral surface is a triangulated surface obtained by isometric gluing of spherical triangles. For instance, the boundary of a generic convex polytope in the 3-sphere is a spherical polyhedral surface. This paper investigates these surfaces from the point of view of inner angles. A rigidity result is obtained. A characterization of spherical polyhedral surfaces in terms of the triangulation and the angle assignment is established.

Abstract:An equidistant polytope is a special equidistant set in the space $\mathbb{R}^n$ all of whose boundary points have equal distances from two finite systems of points. Since one of the finite systems of the given points is required to be in the interior of the convex hull of the other one we can speak about inner and outer focal points of the equidistant polytope. It is of type $(q, p)$, where $q$ is the number of the outer focal points and $p$ is the number of the inner focal points. The equidistancy is the generalization of convexity because a convex polytope can be given as an equidistant polytope of type $(q, 1)$, where $q\geq n+1$. In the paper we present some general results about the basic properties of the equidistant polytopes: convex components, graph representations, connectedness, correspondence to the Voronoi decomposition of the space etc. Especially, we are interested in equidistant polytopes of dimension $2$ (equidistant polygons). Equidistant polygons of type $(3,2)$ will be characterized in terms of a constructive (ruler-and-compass) process to recognize them. In general they are pentagons with exactly two concave angles such that the vertices, where the concave angles appear at, are joined by an inner diagonal related to the adjacent sides of the polygon in a special way via the three reflection theorem for concurrent lines. The last section is devoted to some special arrangements of the focal points to get the concave quadrangles as equidistant polygons of type $(3,2)$.

Abstract:William Thurston (1946-2012) gave a combinatorial characterization for generic branched self-coverings of the two-sphere by associating a planar graph to them <a class="link-https link-external" data-doi="10.48550/arXiv.1502.04760" href="https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.1502.04760" rel="external noopener nofollow">https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.1502.04760</a>. By generalizing the notion of local balancing, the author extends the Thurston result to encompass any branched covering of the two-sphere. As an application, we supply a lower bound for the number of equivalence classes of real rational functions for each given ramification profile. The theorem version that we prove concerns generic rational functions, assuring that if all critical points of that function are real, then we can transform it into a rational map with real coefficients by post-composition with an automorphism of $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^{1}$. The proof we present is constructive and founded on elementary arguments.}

Abstract:Every polyhedron P in R^n can be described by an H-representation \mathcal{H}(P) consisting of half spaces or equivalently by a V-representation \mathcal{V}(P) consisting of the convex hull of a set of vertices and extreme rays. We can define n+1 column matrices H(P) and V(P) that encode these representations. Define polyhedron Q such that V(P) encodes \mathcal{H}(Q). We call P HV-symmetric if V(Q) in turn encodes \mathcal{H}(P). It is well known and often stated that polytopes that contain the origin in their interior and pointed polyhedral cones are HV-symmetric. It seems to be less well known that, more generally, a polyhedron is HV -symmetric if and only if it contains the origin, in other words it is bipolar. We show this using Minkowski's bipolar equation and discuss implications for the vertex and facet enumeration problems.

Abstract:It is known that the space of convex polygons in the Euclidean plane with fixed normals, up to homotheties and translations, endowed with the area form, is isometric to a hyperbolic polyhedron. In this note we show a class of convex polygons in the Lorentzian plane such that their moduli space, if the normals are fixed and endowed with a suitable area, is isometric to a spherical polyhedron. These polygons have an infinite number of vertices, are space-like, contained in the future cone of the origin, and setwise invariant under the action of a linear isometry.

On unique determination of polyhedral sets

Abstract:In this paper we develop in detail the geometric constructions that lead to many uniqueness results for the determination of polyhedral sets, typically scatterers, by a finite minimal number of measurements. We highlight how unique continuation and a suitable reflection principle are enough to proceed with the constructions, without any other assumption on the underlying partial differential equation or the boundary condition. We also aim to keep the geometric constructions and their proofs as simple as possible. To illustrate the applicability of this theory, we show how several uniqueness results present in the literature immediately follow from our arguments. Indeed we believe that this theory may serve as a roadmap for establishing similar uniqueness results for other partial differential equations or boundary conditions.

Compact Polyhedra of Cubic Symmetry: Geometrical Analysis and Classification

Abstract:Compact polyhedra of cubic point symmetry Oh, exhibit surfaces of planar sections (facets) characterized by normal vector families {abc} with up to 48 members each, compatible with Oh symmetry. We focus first on polyhedra confined by facets with normal vectors of one family, {100}, {110}, and {111}, separately. This yields generic polyhedra which serve for the definition of general compact polyhedra as intersections of the three generic species. Their structural properties, such as shape, size, volume, and surface facets, are found to be described by only three polyhedral structure parameters A, B, C. In addition, we examine compact polyhedra exhibiting facets defined by normal vectors of only one general {abc} family resulting in up to 48 facets. These polyhedra can be described by four polyhedral structure parameters Q, a, b, c. Geometrical properties of all polyhedra are discussed in analytical detail and substantiated by visualization of characteristic examples. Corresponding relationships can also be used to classify shapes and estimate sizes of real compact metal nanoparticles observed e.g. in electron microscopy experiments.

Side-Contact Representations with Convex Polygons in 3D: New Results for Complete Bipartite Graphs

Abstract:A polyhedral surface~$\mathcal{C}$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with convex polygons as faces is a side-contact representation of a graph~$G$ if there is a bijection between the vertices of $G$ and the faces of~$\mathcal{C}$ such that the polygons of adjacent vertices are exactly the polygons sharing an entire common side in~$\mathcal{C}$. We show that $K_{3,8}$ has a side-contact representation but $K_{3,250}$ has not. The latter result implies that the number of edges of a graph with side-contact representation and $n$ vertices is bounded by $O(n^{5/3})$.

Arbitrarily Large Neighborly Families of Congruent Symmetric Convex 3-Polytopes

Abstract:We construct, for any positive integer n, a family of n congruent convex polyhedra in R^3, such that every pair intersects in a common facet. Previously, the largest such family contained only eight polytopes. Our polyhedra are Voronoi regions of evenly distributed points on the helix (t, cos t, sin t). With a simple modification, we can ensure that each polyhedron in the family has a point, a line, and a plane of symmetry. We also generalize our construction to higher dimensions and introduce a new family of cyclic polytopes.

Abstract:This article provides a geometric representation for the well-known isomorphism between the special orthogonal group of an isotropic quadratic space of dimension 3 and the group of projective transformations of a projective line. This geometric representation depends on the theory of inversive transformations in dimension 1 as outlined in the 2021 article Projective Line Revisited by the same author. This geometric representation also provides a new perspective on some classical properties of the projective line, such as the classical cross ratio.

Veronese polytopes: Extending the framework of cyclic polytopes

Abstract:This article introduces the theory of Veronese polytopes, a broad generalisation of cyclic polytopes. These arise as convex hulls of points on curves with one or more connected components, obtained as the image of the rational normal curve in affine charts. We describe their facial structure by extending Gale's evenness condition, and provide a further combinatorial characterisation of facets via $\sigma$-parity alternating sequences. Notably, we establish a bijective correspondence between combinatorial types of Veronese polytopes and partitions of finite sets equipped with a cyclic order, called circular compositions. We show that, although the only Veronese $3$-polytopes are the cyclic $3$-polytopes and the octahedron, in general dimension they form a rich and diverse class including all combinatorial types of simplicial $d$-polytopes with at most $d+3$ vertices, the cross-polytope and particular stacked polytopes. In addition, we characterise which curves defining Veronese polytopes are $d$-order curves, and provide a closed formula for the number of facets of any Veronese polytope.

From affine to barycentric coordinates in polytopes

Abstract:Each point of a simplex is expressed as a unique convex combination of the vertices. The coefficients in the combination are the barycentric coordinates of the point. For each point in a general convex polytope, there may be multiple representations, so its barycentric coordinates are not necessarily unique. There are various schemes to fix particular barycentric coordinates: Gibbs, Wachspress, cartographic, etc. In this paper, a method for producing sparse barycentric coordinates in polytopes will be discussed. It uses a purely algebraic treatment of affine spaces and convex sets, with barycentric algebras. The method is based on a certain decomposition of each finite-dimensional convex polytope into a union of simplices of the same dimension.

Abstract:We study hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces with faces isometric to regular hyperbolic polygons satisfying that the total angles at vertices are at least 2 pi. The combinatorial information of these surfaces is shown to be identified with that of Euclidean polyhedral surfaces with negative combinatorial curvature everywhere. We prove that there is a gap between areas of non-smooth hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces and the area of smooth hyperbolic surfaces. The numerical result for the gap is obtained for hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces, homeomorphic to the double torus, whose 1-skeletons are cubic graphs.(c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:For a finite planar graph, it associates with some metric spaces, called (regular) spherical polyhedral surfaces, by replacing faces with regular spherical polygons in the unit sphere and gluing them edge-to-edge. We consider the class of planar graphs which admit spherical polyhedral surfaces with the curvature bounded below by 1 in the sense of Alexandrov, i.e. the total angle at each vertex is at most $2pi$. We classify all spherical tilings with regular spherical polygons, i.e. total angles at vertices are exactly $2pi$. We prove that for any graph in this class which does not admit a spherical tiling, the area of the associated spherical polyhedral surface with the curvature bounded below by 1 is at most $4pi - epsilon_0$ for some $epsilon_0 u003e 0$. That is, we obtain a definite gap between the area of such a surface and that of the unit sphere.
