Abstract:Recall that a group $G$ is said to be $\frac{3}{2}$-generated if every non-trivial element $g\in G$ has a co-generator in $G$ (i.e., an element which together with $g$ generates $G$). Thompson's group $V$ was proved to be $\frac{3}{2}$-generated by Donoven and Harper in 2019. It was the first example of an infinite finitely presented non-cyclic $\frac{3}{2}$-generated group. In 2022, Bleak, Harper and Skipper proved that Thompson's group $T$ is also $\frac{3}{2}$-generated. Since the abelianization of Thompson's group $F$ is $\mathbb{Z}$, it cannot be $\frac{3}{2}$-generated. However, we recently proved that Thompson's group $F$ is "almost" $\frac{3}{2}$-generated in the sense that every element of $F$ whose image in the abelianization forms part of a generating pair of $\mathbb{Z}^2$ is part of a generating pair of $F$. A natural generalization of $\frac{3}{2}$-generation is the notion of spread. Recall that the spread of a group $G$ is the supremum over all integers $k$ such that every $k$ non-trivial elements of $G$ have a common co-generator in $G$. The uniform spread of a group $G$ is the supremum over all integers $k$ for which there exists a conjugacy class $C\subseteq G$ such that every $k$ non-trivial elements of $G$ have a common co-generator which belongs to $C$. In this paper we study modified versions of these notions for Thompson's group $F$.

Abstract:This is a survey of our recent results on the amenability problem for Thompson's group $F$. They mostly concern esimating the density of finite subgraphs in Cayley graphs of $F$ for various systems of generators, and also equations in the group ring of $F$. We also discuss possible approaches to solve the problem in both directions.

Abstract:We extend a construction of Jones to associate $(n, n)$-tangles with elements of Thompson's group $F$ and prove that it is asymptotically faithful as $n \to\infty$. Using this construction we show that the oriented Thompson group $\vec F$ admits a lax group action on a category of Khovanov's chain complexes.

Abstract:The authors study the finite decomposition complexity of metric spaces of H , equipped with different metrics, where H is a subgroup of the linear group GL ∞ (ℤ). It is proved that there is an injective Lipschitz map φ : ( F, d S ) → ( H, d ), where F is the Thompson’s group, dS the word-metric of F with respect to the finite generating set S and d a metric of H . But it is not a proper map. Meanwhile, it is proved that φ : ( F, d S ) → ( H, d 1 ) is not a Lipschitz map, where d 1 is another metric of H .
Hyperbolic actions of Thompson's group $F$ and generalizations

Abstract:We study the poset of hyperbolic structures on Thompson's group $F$ and its generalizations $F_n$ for $n \geq 2$. The global structure of this poset is as simple as one would expect, with the maximal non-elementary elements being two quasi-parabolic actions corresponding to well-known ascending HNN-extension expressions of $F_n$. However, the local structure turns out to be incredibly rich, in stark contrast with the situation for the $T$ and $V$ counterparts. We show that the subposet of quasi-parabolic hyperbolic structures consists of two isomorphic posets, each of which contains uncountably many subposets of \emph{lamplike} structures, which can be described combinatorially in terms of certain hyperbolic structures on related lamplighter groups. Moreover, each of these subposets, as well as intersections and complements thereof, is very large, in that it contains a copy of the power set of the natural numbers. We also prove that these uncountably many uncountable subposets are not the entire picture, indeed there exists a copy of the power set of the natural numbers consisting entirely of non-lamplike structures. We also prove that this entire vast array of hyperbolic structures on $F_n$ collapses as soon as one takes a natural semidirect product with $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$. These results are all proved via a detailed analysis of confining subsets, and along the way we establish a number of fundamental results in the theory of confining subsets of groups.

Abstract:We investigate a multivariate growth series $\Gamma_L({\bf z}), {\bf z} \in \mathbb{C}^d$ associated with a regular language $L$ over an alphabet of cardinality $d.$ Our focus is on languages coming from subgroups of the free group and from subshifts of finite type. We develop a mechanism for computing the rate of growth $\varphi_L({\bf r})$ of $L$ in the direction ${\bf r} \in \mathbb{R}^d$. Using the concave growth condition (CG) introduced by the second author in \cite{quint2002divergence} and the results of Convex Analysis we represent $\psi_L({\bf r}) = \log\left(\varphi_L({\bf r})\right)$ as a support function of a convex set that is a closure of the $\textrm{Relog}$ image of the domain of absolute convergence of $\Gamma_L({\bf z})$. This allows us to compute $\psi_L({\bf r})$ in some important cases, like a Fibonacci language or a language of freely reduced words representing elements of a free group $F_2$. Also we show that the methods of the Large deviation theory can be used as an alternative approach. Finally, we suggest some open problems directed on the possibility of extensions of the results of the first author from \cite{grigorchuk1980symmetrical} on multivariate cogrowth.

Finiteness properties of generalized Thompson groups via expansion sets

Abstract:We outline a general procedure that builds classifying spaces for generalized Thompson groups $\Gamma$. The construction depends on a small number of choices: (1) an inverse semigroup $S$ of partial transformations that ``locally determine" $\Gamma$; (2) an equivalence relation on certain pairs $(f,D)$, and (3) an ``expansion" rule $\mathcal{E}$. These choices determine an \emph{expansion set} $\mathcal{B}$, which is a combinatorial device that outputs a simplicial complex $\Delta^{f}_{\mathcal{B}}$ upon which $\Gamma$ acts. Under favorable conditions, often achieved in practice, $\Delta^{f}_{\mathcal{B}}$ is contractible, and the action of $\Gamma$ has small stabilizers. The definition of $\Delta^{f}_{\mathcal{B}}$ is such that ascending and descending links in $\Delta^{f}_{\mathcal{B}}$ can be described via formulas that depend only on the expansion rule $\mathcal{E}$. The result is to facilitate the usual computations of the connectivity of the descending link. Under natural hypotheses, one can prove that the acting group has type $F_{\infty}$. The net effect of our results is to automate results of this kind. Several applications are given; in particular, we sketch unified proofs that $V$, $nV$, Röver's group $G$, and the Lodha-Moore group have type $F_{\infty}$.

Abstract:We investigate Farley's CAT(0) cubical model for Thompson's group F (we adopt the classical language of F, using binary trees and piecewise linear maps). Main results include: in general, Thompson's group elements are parabolic; we find simple, exact formulas for the CAT(0) translation lengths, in particular the elements of F are ballistic and uniformly bounded away from zero; there exist flats of any dimension and we construct explicitly many of them; we reveal large regions in the Tits Boundary, for example the positive part of a non-separable Hilbert sphere, but also more complicated objects. En route, we solve several open problems proposed in Farley's papers.

Abstract:We discuss a central limit theorem in the framework of the group algebra of the Thompson group $F$. We consider the sequence of self-adjoint elements given by $a_n=\frac{g_n+g_n^{*}}{\sqrt{2}}$ in the noncommutative probability space $(\mathbb{C}(F),\varphi)$, where the expectation functional $\varphi$ is the trace associated to the left regular representation of $F$, and the $g_n$-s are the generators of $F$ in its standard infinite presentation. We show that the limit law of the sequence $s_n = \frac{a_0+\cdots+a_{n-1}}{\sqrt{n}}$ is the standard normal distribution.

Abstract:Finite decomposition complexity (FDC) is a large scale property of a metric space. It generalizes finite asymptotic dimension and applies to a wide class of groups. To make the property quantitative, a countable ordinal “the complexity” can be defined for a metric space with FDC. In this paper we prove that the subgroup Z≀Z of Thompsonʼs group F belongs to Dω exactly, where ω is the smallest infinite ordinal number and show that F equipped with the word-metric with respect to the infinite generating set {x0,x1,…,xn,…} does not have finite decomposition complexity.

Abstract:In this paper, we continue our study of the class of diagram groups. Simply speaking, a diagram is a labelled plane graph bounded by a pair of paths (the top path and the bottom path). To multiply two diagrams, one simply identifies the top path of one diagram with the bottom path of the other diagram, and removes pairs of "reducible" cells. Each diagram group is determined by an alphabet $X$, containing all possible labels of edges, a set of relations ${\cal R}=\{u_i=v_i\mid i=1,2,... \}$, containing all possible labels of cells, and a word $w$ over $X$ -- the label of the top and bottom paths of diagrams. Diagrams can be considered as 2-dimensional words, and diagram groups can be considered as 2-dimensional analogue of free groups. In our previous paper, we showed that the class of diagram groups contains many interesting groups including the famous R. Thompson group $F$ (it corresponds to the simplest set of relations $\{x=x^2 \}$), closed under direct and free products and some other constructions. In this paper we study mainly subgroups of diagram groups. We show that not every subgroup of a diagram group is itself a diagram group (this answers a question from the previous paper). We prove that every nilpotent subgroup of a diagram group is abelian, every abelian subgroup is free, but even the Thompson group contains solvable subgroups of any degree. We also study distortion of subgroups in diagram groups, including the Thompson group. It turnes out that centralizers of elements and abelian subgroups are always undistorted, but the Thompson group contains distorted soluble subgroups.
Decomposition of Pythagorean representations of R. Thompson's groups

Abstract:We continue to study Pythagorean unitary representation of Richard Thompson's groups $F$, $T$ and $V$ that are built from a single isometry from a Hilbert space to its double. By developing powerful diagrammatically based techniques we show that each such representation splits into a diffuse and an atomic parts. We previously proved that the diffuse part is Ind-mixing: it does not contain induced representations of finite-dimensional ones. We fully decompose the atomic part: the building blocks are monomial representations arising from a precise family of parabolic subgroups of $F$.

Abstract:In his work on representations of Thompson's group $F$, Vaughan Jones defined and studied the $3$-\emph{colorable subgroup} $\mathcal{F}$ of $F$. Later, Ren showed that it is isomorphic with the Brown-Thompson group $F_4$. In this paper we continue with the study of the $3$-colorable subgroup and prove that the quasi-regular representation of $F$ associated with the $3$-colorable subgroup is irreducible. We show moreover that the preimage of $\mathcal{F}$ under a certain injective endomorphism of $F$ is contained in three (explicit) maximal subgroups of $F$ of infinite index. These subgroups are different from the previously known infinite index maximal subgroups of $F$, namely the parabolic subgroups that fix a point in $(0,1)$, (up to isomorphism) the Jones' oriented subgroup $\vec{F}$, and the explicit examples found by Golan.

Abstract:We study the subgroups of R. J. Thompson's group F and PL o (I), the group of orientation preserving, piecewise linear self homeomorphisms of [0, 1]. We exhibit, for each non-limit ordinal α ≤ ω 2 + 1, an elementary amenable group of elementary class α (under Chou's stratification of elementary amenable groups) that is a subgroup of F and thus of PL o (I). We also give examples that negatively answer a question of Sapir about non-solvable groups in F and PL o (I).

Abstract:What is the probability that a random walk in the free group ends in a proper power? Or in a primitive element? We present a formula that computes the exponential decay rate of the probability that a random walk on a regular tree ends in a given subset, in terms of the exponential decay rate of the analogous probability of the non-backtracking random walk. This generalizes the well-known cogrowth formula of Grigorchuk, Cohen and Northshield.

Abstract:We extend a central limit theorem, recently established for the Thompson group $F=F_2$ by Krishnan, to the Brown-Thompson groups $F_p$, where $p$ is any integer greater than or equal to $2$. The non-commutative probability space considered is the group algebra $\mathbb{C}[F_p]$, equipped with the canonical trace. The random variables in question are $a_n:= (x_n + x_n^{-1})/\sqrt{2}$, where $\{x_i\}_{i\geq 0}$ represents the standard family of infinite generators. Analogously to the case of $F=F_2$, it is established that the limit distribution of $s_n = (a_0 + \ldots + a_{n-1})/\sqrt{n}$ converges to the standard normal distribution. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that for a state corresponding to Jones's oriented subgroup $\vec{F}$, such a central limit theorem does not hold.

Abstract:We give sharp bounds in Breuillard, Green and Tao's finitary version of Gromov's theorem on groups with polynomial growth. Precisely, we show that for every non-negative integer d there exists $c=c(d)>0$ such that if $G$ is a group with finite symmetric generating set $S$ containing the identity and $|S^n|\le cn^{d+1}|S|$ for some positive integer $n$ then there exist normal subgroups $H\le\Gamma\le G$ such that $H\subseteq S^n$, such that $\Gamma/H$ is $d$-nilpotent (i.e. has a central series of length $d$ with cyclic factors), and such that $[G:\Gamma]\le g(d)$, where $g(d)$ denotes the maximum order of a finite subgroup of $GL_d(\mathbb{Z})$. The bounds on both the nilpotence and index are sharp; the previous best bounds were $O(d)$ on the nilpotence, and an ineffective function of $d$ on the index. In fact, we obtain this as a small part of a much more detailed fine-scale description of the structure of $G$. These results have a wide range of applications in various aspects of the theory of vertex-transitive graphs: percolation theory, random walks, structure of finite groups, scaling limits of finite vertex-transitive graphs.... We obtain some of these applications in the present paper, and treat others in companion papers. Some are due to or joint with other authors.
