Abstract:In this paper, we extend the result of [Andreas Fring et al J. Phys. A 43, 345401 (2010)] in noncommutative phase-space (NCPS). We compute the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian of a harmonic oscillator in NCPS. We construct a new P T-symmetry in noncommutative phase-space and prove that the system does not possess a broken P T-regime. We then compute the eigenvalue spectrum of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian of the system.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to find the exact solution of the harmonic oscillator in a position-dependent 4-dimensional noncommutative phase space. The noncommutative phase space that we consider is described by the commutation relations between coordinates and momenta: $[\hat{x}^1,\hat{x}^2]=i\theta(1+\omega_2 \hat x^2)$, $[\hat{p}^1,\hat{p}^2]=i\bar\theta$, $[\hat{x}^i,\hat{p}^j]=i\hbar_{eff}\delta^{ij}$. We give an analytical method to solve the eigenvalue problem of the harmonic oscillator within this deformation algebra.

Abstract:Harmonic oscillator in noncommutative two dimensional lattice are investigated. Using the properties of non-differential calculus and its applications to quantum mechanics, we provide the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the corresponding Hamiltonian. First we consider the case of ordinary quantum mechanics, and we point out the thermodynamic properties of the model. Then we consider the same question when both coordinates and momentums are noncommutative.

Abstract:This work explores the behaviour of a noncommutative harmonic oscillator in a time-dependent background, as previously investigated in [1]. Specifically, we examine the system when expressed in terms of commutative variables, utilizing a generalized form of the standard Bopp-shift relations recently introduced in [2]. We solved the time dependent system and obtained the analytical form of the eigenfunction using the method of Lewis invariants, which is associated with the Ermakov-Pinney equation, a non-linear differential equation. We then obtain exact analytical solution set for the Ermakov-Pinney equation. With these solutions in place, we move on to compute the dynamics of the energy expectation value analytically and explore their graphical representations for various solution sets of the Ermakov-Pinney equation, associated with a particular choice of quantum number. Finally, we determined the generalized form of the uncertainty equality relations among the operators for both commutative and noncommutative cases. Expectedly, our study is consistent with the findings in [1], specifically in a particular limit where the coordinate mapping relations reduce to the standard Bopp-shift relations.

Abstract:We use the invariant operator method to investigate the quantum characteristics of the inverted oscillator. We introduce a unitary transformation that maps a time-dependent general Hermitian linear invariant operator to a time-independent one, which describes a harmonic oscillator with a unit mass and a constant frequency. Our investigation includes three distinguished cases: negative frequency, zero frequency, and positive frequency. Our most interesting result concerns the last case. For the case of negative frequency, we propose a new inner product by the introduction of the new metric operator η. Coherent state for this case will be constructed.

Abstract:In this paper, we examine the harmonic oscillator problem in non-commutative phase space (NCPS) by using the Dunkl derivative instead of the habitual one. After defining the Hamilton operator, we use the polar coordinates to derive the binding energy eigenvalue. We find eigenfunctions that correspond to these eigenvalues in terms of the Laguerre functions. We observe that the Dunkl-Harmonic Oscillator (DHO) in the NCPS differs from the ordinary one in the context of providing additional information on the even and odd parities. Therefore, we conclude that working with the Dunkl operator could be more appropriate because of its rich content.

Abstract:This work prolongs, using an operator method, the investigations started in our recent paper J. Math. Phys. 51., 102108 on the spectrum and states of the harmonic oscillator on twisted Moyal plane, where rather a Moyal-star-algebraic approach was used. The physical spectrum and states of the harmonic oscillator on twisted Moyal space, obtained here by solving the corresponding differential equation, are similar to those of the ordinary Moyal space, with different parameters. This fortunately contrasts with the previous study which produced unexpected results, i.e. infinitely degenerate states with energies depending on the coordinate functions.

Abstract:We study two quantum mechanical systems on the noncommutative plane using a representation independent approach. First, in the context of the Landau problem, we obtain an explicit expression for the gauge transformation that connects the Landau and the symmetric gauge in noncommutative space. This lead us to conclude that the usual form of the symmetric gauge $\vec{A}=\left(-\frac{\beta}{2}\hat{Y},\frac{\beta}{2}\hat{X}\right)$, in which the constant $\beta$ is interpreted as the magnetic field, is not true in noncommutative space. We also be able to establish a precise definition of $\beta$ as function of the magnetic field, for which the equivalence between the symmetric and Landau gauges is hold in noncommutative plane. Using the symmetric gauge we obtain results for the spectrum of the Quantum Hall system, its transverse conductivity in the presence of an electric field and other static observables. These results amend the literature on Quantum Hall Effect in noncommutative plane in which the incorrect form of the symmetric gauge, in noncommutative space, is assumed. We also study the non-equilibrium dynamics of simple observables for this system. On the other hand, we study the dynamics of the harmonic oscillator in non-commutative space and show that, in general, it exhibit quasi-periodic behavior, in striking contrast with its commutative version. The study of the dynamics reveals itself as a most powerful tool to characterize and understand the effects of non-commutativity.

On the entanglement of co-ordinate and momentum degrees of freedom in noncommutative space

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the quantum entanglement induced by phase-space noncommutativity. Both the position-position and momentum-momentum noncommutativity are incorporated to study the entanglement properties of coordinate and momentum degrees of freedom under the shade of oscillators in noncommutative space. Exact solutions for the systems are obtained after the model is re-expressed in terms of canonical variables, by performing a particular Bopp's shift to the noncommuting degrees of freedom. It is shown that the bipartite Gaussian state for an isotropic oscillator is always separable. To extend our study for the time-dependent system, we allow arbitrary time dependency on parameters. The time-dependent isotropic oscillator is solved with the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant method. It turns out that even for arbitrary time-dependent scenarios, the separability property does not alter. We extend our study to the anisotropic oscillator, which provides an entangled state even for time-independent parameters. The Wigner quasi-probability distribution is constructed for a bipartite Gaussian state. The noise matrix (covariance matrix) is explicitly studied with the help of Wigner distribution. Simon's separability criterion (generalized Peres-Horodecki criterion) has been employed to find the unique function of the (mass and frequency) parameters, for which the bipartite states are separable. In particular, we show that the mere inclusion of non-commutativity of phase-space is not sufficient to generate the entanglement, rather anisotropy is important at the same footing.

Oscillators with imaginary coupling: spectral functions in quantum mechanics and quantum field theory

Abstract:The axioms of Quantum Mechanics require that the hamiltonian of any closed system is self-adjoint, so that energy levels are real and time evolution preserves probability. On the other hand, non-hermitian hamiltonians with ${\cal{PT}}$-symmetry can have both real spectra and unitary time evolution. In this paper, we study in detail a pair of quantum oscillators coupled by an imaginary bilinear term, both in quantum mechanics and in quantum field theory. We discuss explicitly how such hamiltonians lead to perfectly sound physical theories with real spectra and unitary time evolution, in spite of their non-hermiticity. We also analyze two-point correlation functions and their associated Källen-Lehmann representation. In particular, we discuss the intimate relation between positivity violation of the spectral functions and the non-observability of operators in a given correlation function. Finally, we conjecture that positivity violation of some spectral functions of the theory could be a generic sign of the existence of complex pairs of energy eigenvalues (i.e., a ${\cal{PT}}$-broken phase) somewhere in its parameter space.

Abstract:We investigate the simple harmonic oscillator in a 1-d box, and the 2-d isotropic harmonic oscillator problem in a circular cavity with perfectly reflecting boundary conditions. The energy spectrum has been calculated as a function of the self-adjoint extension parameter. For sufficiently negative values of the self-adjoint extension parameter, there are bound states localized at the wall of the box or the cavity that resonate with the standard bound states of the simple harmonic oscillator or the isotropic oscillator. A free particle in a circular cavity has been studied for the sake of comparison. This work represents an application of the recent generalization of the Heisenberg uncertainty relation related to the theory of self-adjoint extensions in a finite volume.

Abstract:This paper investigates the functional calculus of the harmonic oscillator on each Moyal-Groenewold plane, the noncommutative phase space which is a fundamental object in quantum mechanics. Specifically, we show that the harmonic oscillator admits a bounded $\mathrm{H}^\infty(\Sigma_\omega)$ functional calculus for any angle $0 < \omega < \frac{\pi}{2}$ and even a bounded Hörmander functional calculus on the associated noncommutative $\mathrm{L}^p$-spaces, where $\Sigma_\omega=\{ z \in \mathbb{C}^*: |\arg z| <\omega \}$. To achieve these results, we develop a connection with the theory of 2-step nilpotent Lie groups by introducing a notion of twisted Weyl tuple and connecting it to some semigroups of operators previously investigated by Robinson via group representations. Along the way, we demonstrate that $\mathrm{L}^p$-square-max decompositions lead to new insights between noncommutative ergodic theory and $R$-boundedness, and we prove a twisted transference principle, which is of independent interest. Our approach accommodate the presence of a constant magnetic field and they are indeed new even in the framework of magnetic Weyl calculus on classical $\mathrm{L}^p$-spaces. Our results contribute to the understanding of functional calculi on noncommutative spaces and have implications for the maximal regularity of the most basic evolution equations associated to the harmonic oscillator.

Abstract:When a non-hermitian hamiltonian has a certain symmetry, such as the PTpseudo-hermiticity, it is still possible that the hamiltonian has a realspectrum. In this note, by adding an imaginary potential proportional toip_1p_2 to the hamiltonian of an anisotropic planar oscillator, we construct aPT pseudo-hermitian hamiltonian and obtain its real spectrum. In addition, wefind that the reality of the energy spectrum remains when the model is extendedto the canonical noncommutative space.
A New Look at the Quantum Mechanics of the Harmonic Oscillator

Abstract:Classically the Harmonic Oscillator (HO) is the generic example for the use of angle and action variables phi in R mod 2 pi and I > 0. But the symplectic transformation (\phi,I) to (q,p) is singular for (q,p) = (0,0). Globally {(q,p)} has the structure of the plane R^2, but {(phi,I)} that of the punctured plane R^2 -(0,0). This implies qualitative differences for the QM of the two phase spaces: The quantizing group for the plane R^2 consists of the (centrally extended) translations generated by {q,p,1}, but the corresponding group for {(phi,I)} is SO(1,2) = Sp(2,R)/Z_2, (Sp(2,R): symplectic group of the plane), with Lie algebra basis {h_0 = I, h_1 = I cos phi, h_2 = - I sin phi}. In the QM for the (phi,I)-model the three h_j correspond to self-adjoint generators K_j, j=0,1,2, of irreducible unitary representations (positive discrete series) for SO(1,2) or one of its infinitely many covering groups, the Bargmann index k > 0 of which determines the ground state energy E (k, n=0) = hbar omega k of the (phi,I)-Hamiltonian H(K). For an m-fold covering the lowest possible value is k=1/m, which can be made arbitrarily small! The operators Q and P, now expressed as functions of the K_j, keep their usual properties, but the richer structure of the K_j quantum model of the HO is ``erased'' when passing to the simpler Q,P model! The (phi,I)-variant of the HO implies many experimental tests: Mulliken-type experiments for isotopic diatomic molecules, experiments with harmonic traps for atoms, ions and BE-condensates, with the (Landau) levels of charged particles in magnetic fields, with the propagation of light in vacuum, passing through electric or magnetic fields. Finally it leads to a new theoretical estimate for the quantum vacuum energy of fields and its relation to the cosmological constant.

Algebraic solution for the classical harmonic oscillator

Abstract:The harmonic oscillator is one of the most studied systems in Physics with a myriad of applications. One of the first problems solved in a Quantum Mechanics course is calculating the energy spectrum of the simple harmonic oscillator with analytic and algebraic approaches. In the algebraic solution, creation and annihilation operators are introduced to factorize the Hamiltonian. This work presents an algebraic solution for the simple harmonic oscillator in the context of Classical Mechanics, exploring the Hamiltonian formalism. In this solution, similarities between the canonical coordinates in a convenient basis for the classical problem and the corresponding operators in Quantum Mechanics are highlighted. Moreover, the presented algebraic solution provides a straightforward procedure for the quantization of the classical harmonic oscillator, motivating and justifying some operator definitions commonly used to solve the correspondent problem in Quantum Mechanics.

Abstract:Courses on undergraduate quantum mechanics usually focus on solutions of the Schrödinger equation for several simple one-dimensional examples. When the notion of a Hilbert space is introduced, only academic examples are used, such as the matrix representation of Dirac’s raising and lowering operators or the angular momentum operators. We introduce some of the same one-dimensional examples as matrix diagonalization problems, with a basis that consists of the infinite set of square well eigenfunctions. Undergraduate students are well equipped to handle such problems in familiar contexts. We pay special attention to the one-dimensional harmonic oscillator. This paper should equip students to obtain the low lying bound states of any one-dimensional short range potential.

Abstract:We construct algebra with noncommutativity of coordinates and noncommutativity of momenta which is rotationally invariant and equivalent to noncommutative algebra of canonical type. Influence of noncommutativity on the energy levels of hydrogen atom is studied in rotationally invariant noncommutative phase space. We find corrections to the levels up to the second order in the parameters of noncommutativity and estimate the upper bounds of these parameters.
