Abstract:The microscopic description of heavy-ion reactions at low beam energies is achieved within hadronic transport approaches. In this article a new approach SMASH (Simulating Many Accelerated Strongly-interacting Hadrons) is introduced and applied to study the production of non-strange particles in heavy-ion reactions at $E_{\rm kin}=0.4-2A$ GeV. First, the model is described including details about the collision criterion, the initial conditions and the resonance formation and decays. To validate the approach, equilibrium properties such as detailed balance are presented and the results are compared to experimental data for elementary cross sections. Finally results for pion and proton production in C+C and Au+Au collisions is confronted with HADES and FOPI data. Predictions for particle production in $\pi+A$ collisions are made.

A multiphase transport model (AMPT) with two different hadronization mechanisms: string fragmentation or parton coalescence, is used in our study. When the hadrons are formed from string fragmentation, the subsequent hadronic rescatterings will result in particle mass dependence of nuclear modification factor R_{CP}, which is consistent with the present experimental data. On the other hand, in the framework of parton coalescence, the mass dependence disappears and the strangeness plays an important role. Both mechanisms failed to reproduce the p_{T} dependence of R_{CP} of pion, indicating that initial-state effects might be also important in such collisions.

Abstract:A pQCD-based model for parton production and equilibration in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions is reviewed. The model combines pQCD processes including initial and final state radiations together with string phenomenology for nonperturbative soft processes. Nuclear effects on the initial parton production, such as multiple parton scattering and nuclear shadowing of parton distribution functions are considered. Comparisons with existing data are made and further tests of the model to constrain model parameters are proposed. With the obtained space-time history of the parton production, evolution of the minijet gas toward a fully equilibrated parton plasma is studied. Direct probes of the early parton dynamics, such as pre-equilibrium photon and dilepton production, open charm production, Jψ suppression and jet quenching are also reviewed.

Abstract:We study particle production and its density evolution and equilibration in hot dense medium. One type of hot dense medium, which we study, is hadronic gas produced at quark gluon plasma hadronization in heavy ions collisions in SPS, RHIC and LHC experiments. We study hadron production at non-equilibrium quark gluon plasma hadronization and their evolution in thermal hadronic gas phase. We use non-equilibrium hadronization as the initial condition in the study of hadronic kinetic phase. During this time period some hadronic resonances can be produced in lighter hadrons fusion. Production of resonances is dominant over decay if there is non-equilibrium excess of decay products. Within this model we explain apparently contradictory experimental results reported in RHIC experiments: Sigma(1385) yield is enhanced while Lambda(1520) yield is suppressed compared to the statistical hadronization model expectation obtained without kinetic phase. We also predict Delta(1232) enhancement. The second type of plasma medium we consider is the relativistic electron positron photon plasma drop. This plasma is expected to be produced in decay of supercritical field created in ultrashort laser pulse. We study at what conditions this plasma drop is opaque for photons and therefore may reach thermal and chemical equilibrium. Further we consider muon and pion production in this plasma also as a diagnostic tool. Finally all these theoretical developments can be applied to begin a study of particles evolution in early universe in temperatures domain from QGP hadronization (160 MeV) to nucleosynthesis (0.1 MeV). The first results on pion equilibration are presented here.

Abstract:The current status of various thermal and statistical descriptions of particle production in the ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions experiments is presented in detail. We discuss the formulation of various types of thermal models of a hot and dense hadron gas (HG) and the methods incorporated in the implementing of the interactions between hadrons. It includes our new excluded-volume model which is thermodynamically consistent. The results of the above models together with the experimental results for various ratios of the produced hadrons are compared. We derive some new universal conditions emerging at the chemical freeze-out of HG fireball showing independence with respect to the energy as well as the structure of the nuclei used in the collision. Further, we calculate various transport properties of HG such as the ratio of shear viscosity-to-entropy using our thermal model and compare with the results of other models. We also show the rapidity as well as transverse mass spectra of various hadrons in the thermal HG model in order to outline the presence of flow in the fluid formed in the collision. The purpose of this review article is to organize and summarize the experimental data obtained in various experiments with heavy-ion collisions and then to examine and analyze them using thermal models so that a firm conclusion regarding the formation of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) can be obtained.

Abstract:We study soft hadron production in relativistic heavy ion collisions in a wide range of reaction energy, 4.8 GeV <sqrt{s_ NN}<200 GeV, and make predictions about yields of particles using the statistical hadronization model. In fits to experimental data, we obtain both statistical parameters as well as physical properties of the hadron source. We identify the properties of the fireball at the critical energy threshold, 6.26 GeV < sqrt{s_NN}^cr} <7.61 GeV, delineating for higher energies hadronization of an entropy rich phase. In terms of the chemical composition, one sees a phase which at low energy is chemically under-saturated, and which turns into a chemically over-saturated state persisting up to the maximum accessible energy. Assuming that there is no change in physical mechanisms in the energy range 15>sqrt{s_NN} \ge 200 GeV, we use continuity of particle yields and statistical parameters to predict the hadron production at sqrt{s_NN}=62.4 GeV, and obtain total yields of hadrons at sqrt{s_NN}=130 GeV. We consider, in depth, the pattern we uncover within the hadronization condition, and discuss possible mechanisms associated with the identified rapid change in system properties at sqrt{s_NN ^cr}. We propose that the chemically over-saturated 2+1 flavor hadron matter system undergoes a 1st order phase transition.

Abstract:It has been theorized that if heavy nuclei (e.g. Au, Pb) are collided at sufficiently high energies, we might be to recreate the conditions that existed in the universe a few microseconds after the Big Bang. The kinetic energy of the colliding nuclei gets converted into heat, leading to a phase transition into a new state of matter: the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP), in which quarks and gluons are deconfined. However, we never directly get to see the QGP because as the matter cools it recombines (hadronizes) into ordinary subatomic particles. We can only hope to infer its existence from indirect experimental signatures, after hadronization. In this dissertation we attempt to shed some light on: Properties of the final state of produced matter in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV. As the hot, dense system of particles from the collision zone cools and expands, light nuclei like deuterons and anti-deuterons can be formed, with a probability proportional to the product of the phase space densities of its constituent nucleons. Thus, invariant yield of deuterons, compared to the protons and neutrons from which they coalesce, provides information about the size of the emitting system and its space-time evolution. The initial conditions that led to this. This is done by looking at the nuclear modification factor $R_{cp}$ from particle production in forward and backward directions in a ``control'' experiment using d+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV. This can allow us to distinguish between effects that could potentially be due to deconfinement, versus effects of cold nuclear matter.

Abstract:Particle correlations in small collisions systems, like proton–nucleus, lie at the core of the discussion about whether quark–gluon plasma is produced in small systems. Both initial and final state explanations have been essayed to describe such correlations. In this work, we focus on the initial state explanations provided by the quantum effects in the initial wave function of the incoming hadrons, in the framework of the Color Glass Condensate effective theory. We describe the formalism indicating the different inputs required for phenomenological applications. We compare the results from two different models, finding that the results for azimuthal harmonics agree qualitatively, but show quantitative differences, particularly at transverse momenta above the saturation scale.

Abstract:Production of low-$p_T$ (soft) hadronic particles in high energy collisions constitutes a significant corner of special interests and problems, as the perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) does not work in this region. We have probed here into the nature of the light particle production in two symmetric nuclear collisions at two neighbouring energies with the help of two non-standard models. The results are found to be in good agreement with data. Despite this, as the models applied here are not intended to provide deep insights into the actual physical processes involved in such collisions, the phenomenological bounds and constraints which cannot be remedied for the present continue to exist.

Towards the understanding of heavy quarks hadronization: from leptonic to heavy-ion collisions

Abstract:The formation of hadrons is a fundamental process in nature that can be investigated at particle colliders. As several recent findings demonstrate, with $\mathrm{e^+e^-}$ collisions as a "vacuum-like" reference at one extreme, and central nucleus--nucleus as a dense, extended-size system characterized by flow and local equilibrium at the opposite extreme, different collision systems offer a lever arm that can be exploited to probe with a range of heavy-flavour hadron species the onset of various hadronization processes. In this review, we present an overview of the theoretical and experimental developments. The focus is on open-heavy-flavour measurements. The comparison with model predictions and connections among the results in electron-positron, proton--proton, proton--nucleus, nucleus--nucleus collisions are discussed. After reviewing the current state, we suggest some prospects and future developments.

Abstract:In high energy nucleus-nucleus collisions, a transient state of thermalized, hot and dense matter governed by Quantum Chromodynamics is produced. Properties of this state are reflected in the bulk low transverse momentum (P_T) hadron production which represent the remnant of the collective medium as well as in modifications of so-called probes which are not part of the thermalized medium, i.e. jets generated in high P_T processes or leptons and photons which do not participate in the strong interaction. Theory effords aim at deducing the properties of QCD thermodynamics and collectivity from such observables.

Abstract:Employing the recently developed EPOS4HQ event generator, we study the production of different heavy-flavor mesons in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and CERN Large Hadron Collider energies. The transverse momentum spectra, yield ratio, nuclear modification factor, and elliptic flow can be well described in the EPOS4HQ framework.
