Abstract:The microscopic description of heavy-ion reactions at low beam energies is achieved within hadronic transport approaches. In this article a new approach SMASH (Simulating Many Accelerated Strongly-interacting Hadrons) is introduced and applied to study the production of non-strange particles in heavy-ion reactions at $E_{\rm kin}=0.4-2A$ GeV. First, the model is described including details about the collision criterion, the initial conditions and the resonance formation and decays. To validate the approach, equilibrium properties such as detailed balance are presented and the results are compared to experimental data for elementary cross sections. Finally results for pion and proton production in C+C and Au+Au collisions is confronted with HADES and FOPI data. Predictions for particle production in $\pi+A$ collisions are made.

Identified Hadrons and Jet Chemistry for p+p and Au+Au Collisions at RHIC

Abstract:The study of hadron spectra at high $p_{T}$ in p+p collisions provides a good test of perturbative quantum chromo-dynamic calculations (pQCD) and baseline for measurements of nuclear modification factors in Au+Au collisions. Using events triggered by the Barrel Electro-Magnetic Calorimeter, identified charged hadron transverse momentum ($p_T$) spectra are measured up to 15 GeV/$c$ at mid-rapidity ($\mid y\mid$ $<$ 0.5) and neutral kaon $p_T$ spectra up to 12 GeV/$c$ in p + p collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV. The particle ratios of $p/\pi^{+}$, $\bar{p}/\pi^{-}$ and $K^{\pm,0}$ / $\pi^{\pm}$ in p + p collisions are shown and compared with next-to-leading order pQCD calculations. In central Au+Au collisions, we report nuclear modification factors ($R_{AA}$) for pion, kaon, proton and $\rho$ and discuss several model calculations: color-charge dependence of jet quenching and jet conversion. Finally, centrality dependence of $R_{AA}$ at high $p_T$ ($>$ 5.5 GeV/c) for kaon are compared with that of pion in Au + Au collisions at 200 GeV.

Abstract:In heavy-ion collisions, understanding how light nuclei species are produced can provide insight into the nature of hadronic interactions in extreme conditions. It can also shed light on understanding the matter-antimatter asymmetry and dark matter searches in astrophysical processes. To investigate the production mechanism of light nuclei such as deuteron, triton, and helium-3, we use a naive coalescence afterburner coupled to the well-known $``$A Multi-Phase Transport model" (AMPT). We focus on studying the production of light nuclei in central Au+Au collisions at different center of mass energies ($\sqrt{s_{_{\rm{NN}}}}$ = 19.6, 39, and 200 GeV) and in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm{NN}}}}$ = 2.76 TeV, at mid-rapidity. We generate events with the string melting version of AMPT, and feed the information of the nucleons with spatial and momentum conditions into the coalescence afterburner. Our study reports differential and integrated yields in transverse momentum ($p_{\rm{T}}$) of the light nuclei in different center of mass energies. We also estimate the coalescence parameters ($B_A$) as a function of $p_{\rm{T}}$ and collision energy for (anti-)deuterons, tritons and helium-3s for Au+Au and Pb+Pb collisions, which are compared to other light nuclei production studies. All results are compared with measurements from the STAR and ALICE experiments.

Abstract:Heavy quark and charmonium production as well as their space-time evolution are studied in transport simulations of heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC. In the partonic transport model Boltzmann Approach of MultiParton Scatterings (BAMPS) heavy quarks can be produced in initial hard parton scatterings or during the evolution of the quark-gluon plasma. Subsequently, they interact with the medium via binary scatterings with a running coupling and a more precise Debye screening which is derived from hard thermal loop calculations, participate in the flow and lose energy. We present results of the elliptic flow and nuclear modification factor of heavy quarks and compare them to available data. Furthermore, preliminary results on J/psi suppression at forward and mid-rapidity are reported for central and non-central collisions at RHIC. For this, we study cold nuclear matter effects and the dissociation as well as regeneration of J/psi in the quark-gluon plasma.

Abstract:The understanding of the mechanisms for the production of weakly bound clusters, such as a deuteron $d$, in heavy-ion reactions at mid-rapidity is presently one of the challenging problems which is also known as the "ice in a fire" puzzle. In this study we investigate the dynamical formation of deuterons within the Parton-Hadron-Quantum-Molecular Dynamics (PHQMD) microscopic transport approach and advance two microscopic production mechanisms to describe deuterons in heavy-ion collisions from SIS to RHIC energies: kinetic production by hadronic reactions and potential production by the attractive potential between nucleons. Differently to other studies, for the "kinetic" deuterons we employ the full isospin decomposition of the various $\pi NN\leftrightarrow \pi d$, $NNN\leftrightarrow N d$ channels and take into account the finite size properties of the deuteron by means of an excluded volume condition in coordinate space and by the projection onto the deuteron wave function in momentum space. We find that considering the quantum nature of the deuteron in coordinate and momentum space reduces substantially the kinetic deuteron production in a dense medium as encountered in heavy-ion collisions. If we add the "potential" deuterons by applying an advanced Minimum Spanning Tree (aMST) procedure, we obtain good agreement with the available experimental data from SIS energies up to the top RHIC energy.

Abstract:We show that particle species dependence of enhanced hadron production at intermediate transverse momentum (p_T) for d+Au collisions at RHIC can be understood in terms of the hadronic rescatterings in the final state. A multiphase transport model (AMPT) with two different hadronization mechanisms: string fragmentation or parton coalescence, is used in our study. When the hadrons are formed from string fragmentation, the subsequent hadronic rescatterings will result in particle mass dependence of nuclear modification factor R_CP, which is consistent with the present experimental data. On the other hand, in the framework of parton coalescence, the mass dependence disappears and the strangeness plays an important role. Both mechanisms failed to reproduce the p_T dependence of R_CP of pion, indicating that initial-state effects might be also important in such collisions.

Abstract:Nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC produce high temperature and high energy density matter which exhibits partonic degrees of freedom. We will discuss measurements of nuclear modification factors for light hadrons and non-photonic electrons from heavy quark decays, which reflect the flavor dependence of energy loss of high momentum partons traversing the dense QCD medium. The hadronization of bulk partonic matter exhibits collectivity in effective partonic degrees of freedom. Nuclear collisions at RHIC provide an intriguing environment, where many constituent quark ingredients are readily available for possible formation of exotic particles through quark coalescences or recombinations.

Abstract:With the kinetic freeze-out nucleons and antinucleons obtained from the quark combination model, we study the production of light nuclei and antinuclei in the (anti-)nucleon coalescence mechanism in relativistic heavy ion collisions. We derive analytic formulas of the momentum distributions of different light nuclei and apply them to compute transverse momentum (pT) spectra of (anti-)deuterons (d , d ̄) and (anti-)tritons (t, t ̄) in Au-Au collisions at sNN=7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 54.4 GeV . We find that the experimental data available for these pT spectra can be well reproduced. We further study the yields and yield ratios of different light (anti-)nuclei and naturally explain their interesting behaviors as a function of the collision energy. We especially point out that the multiparticle yield ratio tp/d2 should be carefully corrected from hyperon weak decays for protons to probe the production characteristics of light nuclei. Tunable Molecular Resonances of Double Quantum Dots Embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm Interferometer

Abstract:We investigate resonant tunneling through molecular states of coupled double quantum dots embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer. The conductance through the system consists of two resonances associated with the bonding and the antibonding quantum states. We predict that the two resonances are composed of a Breit-Wigner resonance and a Fano resonance, those widths and Fano factor depending on the AB phase very sensitively. Further, we point out that the bonding properties, such as the covalent and the ionic bonding, can be identified by the AB oscillations.

Abstract:The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) aims to inject oxygen ( 16 O ) ions in the next run into its experiments. This include the anticipated one-day physics run focusing on collisions at center-of-mass energy TeV . In this study, we have used recently developed version of the EPOS (EPOS4) to study the production of identified particles ( , and ) in collisions at TeV . Predictions of transverse momentum ( ) spectra, , integrated yield ( ) for different centrality classes are studied. To provide insight into the collective nature of the produced particles, we look into the -differential particle ratios ( and ) and -integrated particle ratios to ( ) as a function of charge particle multiplicity. The shape of the charge particle multiplicity ( ) and mean transverse momentum ( ) is well described by EPOS4. The predictions for the ratios of and from EPOS4 exhibit a systematic overestimation compared to the trends observed in , and systems as a function of charged-particle multiplicity. Interestingly, the results of -integrated particle ratios shows a clear final state multiplicity overlap with , and collisions. EPOS4 does not only mimics signs of collectivity, but embeds collective expansion by construction, since it relies on relativistic hydrodynamics to model the evolution of the so-called core and is one of the suitable candidates to study ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Furthermore, the foreseen data from collisions at the LHC, when available, will help to better understand the heavy-ion-like behavior in small systems as well as help to put possible constraints on the model parameters.

Abstract:We investigate proton-antiproton ($p\bar{p}$) pair production via photon-photon fusion in the ultra-peripheral collisions at RHIC, employing a joint impact parameter and transverse momentum dependent formalism. We consider proton exchange, $s$-channel resonance and hand-bag mechanisms, predicting differential distributions of $p\bar p$ production. Our theoretical predictions can be tested against future measurements at RHIC, to enhance our understanding of photon-photon interactions in strong electromagnetic fields.
