Abstract:We report the synthesis of a graphene-sulfur composite material by wrapping polyethyleneglycol (PEG) coated submicron sulfur particles with mildly oxidized graphene oxide sheets decorated by carbon black nanoparticles. The PEG and graphene coating layers are important to accommodating volume expansion of the coated sulfur particles during discharge, trapping soluble polysulfide intermediates and rendering the sulfur particles electrically conducting. The resulting graphene-sulfur composite showed high and stable specific capacities up to ~600mAh/g over more than 100 cycles, representing a promising cathode material for rechargeable lithium batteries with high energy density.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem this paper attempts to address is the development of a high-performance cathode material for lithium-sulfur batteries to improve the energy density and cycling stability of the batteries. Specifically, the paper focuses on the following points: 1. **Improving the conductivity of sulfur cathode material**: Sulfur itself has relatively low conductivity, which limits its application in batteries. The paper enhances the conductivity of sulfur by encapsulating sulfur particles in graphene and carbon black nanoparticles. 2. **Inhibiting the dissolution and diffusion of polysulfides**: During the charge and discharge process of lithium-sulfur batteries, sulfur forms polysulfides, which easily dissolve in the electrolyte, leading to capacity decay and poor cycling performance. The paper effectively limits the dissolution and diffusion of polysulfides by coating the sulfur particles with a polyethylene glycol (PEG) layer. 3. **Accommodating the volume expansion of sulfur particles**: Sulfur undergoes significant volume expansion during discharge, which can lead to the destruction of the electrode structure. The paper provides a flexible buffer layer by using PEG and graphene to encapsulate sulfur particles, effectively coping with the volume changes. 4. **Achieving high specific capacity and long cycle life**: Through the aforementioned methods, the graphene-sulfur composite material prepared in the paper exhibits a stable specific capacity of up to approximately 600mAh/g and maintains good cycling stability even after more than 100 cycles. In summary, this paper aims to solve the issues of low conductivity, polysulfide dissolution, and volume expansion of sulfur cathode materials in lithium-sulfur batteries by designing and synthesizing a novel graphene-sulfur composite material, thereby achieving high energy density and long cycle life for lithium-sulfur batteries.
