Abstract:In the paper we consider convex cones in infinite-dimensional real vector spaces which are endowed with no topology. The main purpose is to study an internal geometric structure of convex cones and to obtain an analytical description of those. To this end, we first introduce the notion of an open component of a convex cone and then prove that an arbitrary convex cone is the disjoint union of the partial ordered family of its open components and, moreover, as an ordered set this family is an upper semilattice. We identify the structure of this upper semilattice with the internal geometric structure of a convex cone. We demonstrate that the internal geometric structure of a convex cone is related to its facial structure but in the infinite-dimensional setting these two structures may differ each other. Further, we study the internal geometric structure of conical halfspaces (convex cones whose complements are also convex cones). We show that every conical halfspace is the disjoint union of the linear ordered family of its open components each of which is a conical halfspace in its linear hull. Using the internal geometric structure of conical halfspaces, each asymmetric conical halfspace is associated with a linearly ordered family of linear functions, which generates in turn a real-valued function, called a step-linear one, analytically describing this conical halfspace. At last, we establish that an arbitrary asymmetric convex cone admits an analytical representation by the family of step-linear functions.

Abstract:In this note we provide a full conjugacy and subdifferential calculus for convex convex-composite functions in finite-dimensional space. Our approach, based on infimal convolution and cone-convexity, is straightforward and yields the desired results under a verifiable Slater-type condition, with relaxed monotonicity and without lower semicontinuity assumptions on the functions in play. The versatility of our findings is illustrated by a series of applications in optimization and matrix analysis, including conic programming, matrix-fractional, variational Gram, and spectral functions.

Abstract:Using the convex process theory we study the convergence issues of the iterative sequences generated by the Gauss–Newton method for the convex inclusion problem defined by a cone C and a smooth function F (the derivative is denoted by F′). The restriction in our consideration is minimal and, even in the classical case (the initial point x0 is assumed to satisfy the following two conditions: F′ is Lipschitz around x0 and the convex process Tx0, defined by Tx0⋅=F′(x0)⋅−C, is surjective), our results are new in giving sufficient conditions (which are weaker than the known ones and have a remarkable property being affine-invariant) ensuring the convergence of the iterative sequence with initial point x0. The same study is also made for the so-called convex-composite optimization problem (with objective function given as the composite of a convex function with a smooth map).

Abstract:The gauge function, closely related to the atomic norm, measures the complexity of a statistical model, and has found broad applications in machine learning and statistical signal processing. In a high-dimensional learning problem, the gauge function attempts to safeguard against overfitting by promoting a sparse (concise) representation within the learning alphabet. In this work, within the context of linear inverse problems, we pinpoint the source of its success, but also argue that the applicability of the gauge function is inherently limited by its convexity, and showcase several learning problems where the classical gauge function theory fails. We then introduce a new notion of statistical complexity, gauge$_p$ function, which overcomes the limitations of the gauge function. The gauge$_p$ function is a simple generalization of the gauge function that can tightly control the sparsity of a statistical model within the learning alphabet and, perhaps surprisingly, draws further inspiration from the Burer-Monteiro factorization in computational mathematics. We also propose a new learning machine, with the building block of gauge$_p$ function, and arm this machine with a number of statistical guarantees. The potential of the proposed gauge$_p$ function theory is then studied for two stylized applications. Finally, we discuss the computational aspects and, in particular, suggest a tractable numerical algorithm for implementing the new learning machine.

Strictly convex norms and the local diameter two property

Abstract:We introduce and study a strict monotonicity property of the norm in solid Banach lattices of real functions that prevents such spaces from having the local diameter two property. Then we show that any strictly convex 1-symmetric norm on $\ell_\infty(\mathbb N)$ possesses this strict monotonicity property. In the opposite direction, we show that any Banach space which is strictly convex renormable and contains a complemented copy of $c_0,$ admits an equivalent strictly convex norm for which the space has the local diameter two property. In particular, this enables us to construct a strictly convex norm on $c_0(\Gamma),$ where $\Gamma$ is uncountable, for which the space has a 1-unconditional basis and the local diameter two property.

Abstract:We consider the second-order cone function (SOCF) $f: {\mathbb R}^n \to \mathbb R$ defined by $f(x)= c^T x + d -\|A x + b \|$. Every SOCF is concave. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for strict concavity of $f$. The parameters $A \in {\mathbb R}^{m \times n}$ and $b \in {\mathbb R}^m$ are not uniquely determined. We show that every SOCF can be written in the form $f(x) = c^T x + d -\sqrt{\delta^2 + (x-x_*)^TM(x-x_*)}$. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the parameters $c$, $d$, $\delta$, $M = A^T A$, and $x_*$ to be uniquely determined. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for $f$ to be bounded above.

Abstract:In this note, we study monotone dynamical systems with respect to polyhedral cones. Using the half-space representation and the vertex representation, we propose three equivalent conditions to certify monotonicity of a dynamical system with respect to a polyhedral cone. We then introduce the notion of gauge norm associated with a cone and provide closed-from formulas for computing gauge norms associated with polyhedral cones. A key feature of gauge norms is that contractivity of monotone systems with respect to them can be efficiently characterized using simple inequalities. This result generalizes the well-known criteria for Hurwitzness of Metzler matrices and provides a scalable approach to search for Lyapunov functions of monotone systems with respect to polyhedral cones. Finally, we study the applications of our results in transient stability of dynamic flow networks and in scalable control design with safety guarantees.

Abstract:The g-convexity of functions on manifolds is a generalization of the convexity of functions on Rn. It plays an essential role in both differential geometry and non-convex optimization theory. This paper is concerned with g-convex smooth functions on manifolds. We establish criteria for the existence of a Riemannian metric (or connection) with respect to which a given function is g-convex. Using these criteria, we obtain three sparseness results for g-convex functions: (1) The set of g-convex functions on a compact manifold is nowhere dense in the space of smooth functions. (2) Most polynomials on Rn that is g-convex with respect to some geodesically complete connection has at most one critical point. (3) The density of g-convex univariate (resp. quadratic, monomial, additively separable) polynomials asymptotically decreases to zero

Formal language convexity in left-orderable groups

Abstract:We propose a criterion for preserving the regularity of a formal language representation when passing from groups to subgroups. We use this criterion to show that the regularity of a positive cone language in a left-orderable group passes to its finite index subgroups, and to show that there exists no left order on a finitely generated acylindrically hyperbolic group such that the corresponding positive cone is represented by a quasi-geodesic regular language. We also answer one of Navas' questions by giving an example of an infinite family of groups which admit a positive cone that is generated by exactly $k$ generators, for every $k \geq 3$. As a special case of our construction, we obtain a finitely generated positive cone for $F_2 \times \mathbb{Z}$.

Abstract:In this paper, by using the concept of the basic (or q-) calculus and a generalized conic domain, we define two subclasses of normalized multivalent functions which map the open unit disk: U={z : z is an element of C and vertical bar z vertical bar <1} onto this generalized conic domain. We investigate a number of useful properties including (for example) the coefficient estimates and the Fekete-Szego inequalities for each of these multivalent function classes. Our results are connected with those in several earlier works which are related to this field of Geometric Function Theory of Complex Analysis.

Abstract:We show that the local Burkholder functional $\mathcal B_K$ is quasiconvex. In the limit of $p$ going to 2 we find a class of non-polyconvex functionals which are quasiconvex on the set of matrices with positive determinant. In order to prove the validity of lower semicontinuity arguments in this setting, we show that the Burkholder functionals satisfy a sharp extension of the classical function theoretic area formula. As a corollary, in addition to functionals in geometric function theory, one finds new classes of non-polyconvex functionals, degenerating as the determinant vanishes, for which there is existence of minimizers.

Abstract:It is proved that the family of measurable real functions on the product measure space satisfying (or not) the conclusion of Fubini's Theorem (along with a number of related families) is algebraically large, in the sense that it contains large convex cones or even large vector subspaces (except for zero) under rather general assumptions. Several earlier related results are improved, mainly regarding the cardinality of the generator set of the corresponding cones or subspaces.

Abstract:Weighted cone-volume functionals are introduced for the convex polytopes in $\mathbb{R}^n$. For these functionals, geometric inequalities are proved and the equality conditions are characterized. A variety of corollaries are derived, including extremal properties of the regular polytopes involving the $L_p$ surface area. Some applications to crystallography and quantum theory are also presented.

Nonlinear Strict Cone Separation Theorems in Real Normed Spaces

Abstract:In this paper, we derive some new results for the separation of two not necessarily convex cones by a (convex) cone / conical surface in real (reflexive) normed spaces. In essence, we follow the nonlinear and nonsymmetric separation approach developed by Kasimbeyli (2010, SIAM J. Optim. 20), which is based on augmented dual cones and Bishop-Phelps type (normlinear) separating functions. Compared to Kasimbeyli's separation theorem, we formulate our theorems for the separation of two cones under weaker conditions (concerning convexity and closedness requirements) with respect to the involved cones. By a new characterization of the algebraic interior of augmented dual cones in real normed spaces, we are able to establish relationships between our cone separation results and the results derived by Kasimbeyli (2010, SIAM J. Optim. 20) and by Garcia-Castano, Melguizo-Padial and Parzanese (2023, Math. Meth. Oper. Res. 97).

Abstract:In this paper we first extend from normed spaces to locally convex spaces some characterizations of denting points in convex sets. On the other hand, we also prove that in an infrabarreled locally convex space a point in a convex set is denting if and only if it is a point of continuity and an extreme point of the closure of such a convex set under the strong topology in the second dual. The version for normed spaces of the former equivalence is new and contains, as particular cases, some known and remarkable results. We also extend from normed spaces to locally convex spaces some known characterizations of the weak property ($\pi$) of cones. Besides, we provide some new results regarding the angle property of cones and related. We also state that the class of cones in normed spaces having a pointed completion is the largest one for which the vertex is a denting point if and only if it is a point of continuity. Finally we analyse and answer several problems in the literature concerning geometric properties of cones which are related with density problems into vector optimization.

Abstract:We investigate a class of polyhedral convex cones, with $R^k_+$ (the nonegative orthant in $\mathbb{R}^k$) as a special case. We start with the observation that for convex cones contained in $\mathbb{R}^k$, the respective cone efficiency is inconsistent with the Pareto efficiency, the latter being deeply rooted in economics, the decision theory, and the multiobjective optimization theory. Despite that, we argue that convex cones contained in $\mathbb{R}^k$ and the respective cone efficiency are also relevant to these domains.

Abstract:We consider feasibility and constrained optimization problems defined over smooth and/or strongly convex sets. These notions mirror their popular function counterparts but are much less explored in the first-order optimization literature. We propose new scalable, projection-free, accelerated first-order methods in these settings. Our methods avoid linear optimization or projection oracles, only using cheap one-dimensional linesearches and normal vector computations. Despite this, we derive optimal accelerated convergence guarantees of $O(1/T)$ for strongly convex problems, $O(1/T^2)$ for smooth problems, and accelerated linear convergence given both. Our algorithms and analysis are based on novel characterizations of the Minkowski gauge of smooth and/or strongly convex sets, which may be of independent interest: although the gauge is neither smooth nor strongly convex, we show the gauge squared inherits any structure present in the set.

Abstract:Given a compact and H-convex subset $K$ of the Heisenberg group ${\mathbb H}$, with the origin $e$ in its interior, we are interested in finding a homogeneous H-convex function $f$ such that $f(e)=0$ and $f\bigl|_{\partial K}=1$; we will call this function $f$ the ${\mathbb H}$-cone-function of vertex $e$ and base $\partial K$. While the equivalent version of this problem in the Euclidean framework has an easy solution, in our context this investigation turns out to be quite entangled, and the problem can be unsolvable. The approach we follow makes use of an extension of the notion of convex family introduced by Fenchel. We provide the precise, even if awkward, condition required to $K$ so that $\partial K$ is the base of an ${\mathbb H}$-cone-function of vertex $e.$ Via a suitable employment of this condition, we prove two interesting binding constraints on the shape of the set $K,$ together with several examples.
