Abstract:We construct variations for the classes of regular solutions to degenerate Beltrami equations with restrictions of the set-theoretic type for the complex coefficient. On this basis, we prove the variational maximum principle and other necessary conditions of extremum.

Abstract:In this article we study convex non-autonomous variational problems with differential forms and corresponding function spaces. We introduce a general framework for constructing counterexamples to the Lavrentiev gap, which we apply to several models, including the double phase, borderline case of double phase potential, and variable exponent. The results for the borderline case of double phase potential provide new insights even for the scalar case, i.e., variational problems with 0-forms.

Abstract:On an abstract Wiener space, assume that T is the solution of the quadratic Monge problem associated to the Wiener measure and a second one with a Radon-Nikodym derivative of exponential type. Under the finite information hypothesis, using a variational method, we prove that T minimizes a certain functional originating from the large deviations theory. Applying a variational method a la Euler, we obtain the Sobolev regularity of the backward Monge-Brenier map. A similar result also holds for the forward Monge-Brenier map.

Abstract:We establish the existence and uniqueness results for variational inequality problems on Riemannian manifolds and solve completely the open problem proposed in [S.Z. Németh, Variational inequalities on Hadamard manifolds, Nonlinear Anal. 52 (2003) 1491–1498]. Also the relationships between the constrained optimization problem and the variational inequality problems as well as the projections on Riemannian manifolds are studied.

Abstract:We study quasilinear Beltrami equations, the complex coefficients of which depend on the unknown function. In terms of the so-called tangential dilatation, we have found conditions under which these equations have homeomorphic $ACL$-solutions. Sepa\-ra\-tely, we have found some conditions that ensure the existence of the corresponding con\-ti\-nuous $ACL$-solutions.

Abstract:We construct infinitely many real-valued, time-periodic breather solutions of power-type nonlinear wave equations. These solutions are obtained from critical points of a dual functional and they are weakly localized in space. Our abstract framework allows to find similar existence results for the Klein-Gordon equation or biharmonic wave equations.

We study a natural derived enhancement of the de Rham complex of a non-linear PDE via algebro-geometric techniques and examine its consequences for the functional differential calculus on the space of solutions. Applications to the BV-formalism with and without boundary conditions are discussed.

Abstract:We consider viscosity solutions of a class of nonlinear degenerate elliptic equations on bounded domains. We prove comparison principles and a priori supremum bounds for the solutions. We also address the eigenvalue problem and, in many instances, show the existence of a first eigenvalue and a first positive eigenfunction.

Abstract:We study integral equations with discontinuous nonlinearities in Lebesgue spaces. Using the variational method, based on the concept of a quasipotential operator, we establish a theorem on the existence of semi-regular solutions. For equations with a parameter, a theorem on the existence of nontrivial semi-regular solutions for sufficiently large parameter values is obtained. An example of an applied problem for which the conditions of these theorems are satisfied is given.

Abstract:The objective of this paper is to introduce and study a complicated nonlinear system, called coupled variational-hemivariational inequalities, which is described by a highly nonlinear coupled system of inequalities on Banach spaces. We establish the nonemptiness and compactness of the solution set to the system. We apply a new method of proof based on a multivalued version of the Tychonoff fixed point principle in a Banach space combined with the generalized monotonicity arguments, and elements of the nonsmooth analysis. Our results improve and generalize some earlier theorems obtained for a very particular form of the system.

Variational and numerical aspects of a system of ODEs with concave-convex nonlinerities

Abstract:In this work we discuss a Hamiltonian system of ordinary differential equations under Dirichlet boundary conditions. The system of equations in consideration features a mixed (concave-convex) power nonlinearity depending on a positive parameter $\lambda$. We show multiplicity of nonnegative solutions of the system for a certain range of the parameter $\lambda$ and we also discuss regularity and symmetry of nonnegative solutions of the system. Besides, we present a numerical strategy aiming at the exploration of the optimal range of $\lambda$ for which multiplicity of solutions holds. The numerical experiments are based on the Poincaré-Miranda theorem and the shooting method, which have been lesser explored for systems of ODEs. Our work is motivated by the works of Ambrosetti et al., 1994 and Moreira dos Santos, 2009.

On finding bifurcations for non-variational elliptic systems by the extended quotients method

Abstract:We develop a novel method for finding bifurcations for nonlinear systems of equations based on directly finding bifurcations through saddle points of extended quotients. The method is applied to find the saddle-node bifurcation point for elliptic equations with the nonlinearity of the general convex-concave type. The main result justifies the variational formula for the detection of the maximum saddle-node type bifurcation point of stable positive solutions. As a consequence, a precise threshold value separating the interval of the existence of stable positive solutions is established.

Abstract:New classes of evolution differential equations with the Liouville derivative in Banach spaces are studied. Equations are considered on the whole real line and are not endowed by the initial conditions. Using the methods of the Fourier transform theory, we prove the unique solvability in the sense of classical solutions for the equation solved with respect to the Liouville fractional derivative with a bounded operator at the unknown function. This allows us to obtain the analogous result for the equation with a linear degenerate operator at the fractional derivative and with a spectrally bounded pair of operators. results are applied to obtain new results on the unique solvability of systems of ordinary differential equations, boundary problems to partial differential equations, and systems of equations.

Abstract:We consider an abstract Cauchy problem for a doubly nonlinear evolution equation of the form (d/dt) A(u) + B(u) (sic) f(t) in V', t epsilon (0, T], where T is a real reflexive Banach space, A and B are maximal monotone operators (possibly multivalued) from A to its dual V'. In view of some practical applications, we assume that A and B are subdifferentials. By using the back difference approximation, existence is established, and our proof relies on the continuity of A and the coerciveness of B. As an application, we give the existence for a nonlinear degenerate parabolic equation.

Abstract:A geometric setup for constrained variational calculus is presented. The analysis deals with the study of the extremals of an action functional defined on piecewise differentiable curves, subject to differentiable, non-holonomic constraints. Special attention is paid to the tensorial aspects of the theory. As far as the kinematical foundations are concerned, a fully covariant scheme is developed through the introduction of the concept of infinitesimal control. The standard classification of the extremals into normal and abnormal ones is discussed, pointing out the existence of an algebraic algorithm assigning to each admissible curve a corresponding abnormality index, related to the co-rank of a suitable linear map. Attention is then shifted to the study of the first variation of the action functional. The analysis includes a revisitation of Pontryagin's equations and of the Lagrange multipliers method, as well as a reformulation of Pontryagin's algorithm in hamiltonian terms. The analysis is completed by a general result, concerning the existence of finite deformations with fixed endpoints.

Abstract:We study the solvability of the second boundary value problem of the Lagrangian mean curvature equation arising from special Lagrangian geometry. By the parabolic method, we obtain the existence and uniqueness of the smooth uniformly convex solution, which generalizes the Brendle–Warren's theorem about minimal Lagrangian diffeomorphism in Euclidean metric space.

Abstract:In the half-plane, a solution to a two-dimensional hyperbolic equation with a translation operator in the lowest derivative with respect to a spatial variable varying along the entire real axis is constructed in an explicit form. It is proven that the solutions obtained are classical if the real part of the symbol of a differential-difference operator in the equation is positive.
