Abstract:We report on the use of magnetic sedimentation as a means to determine the size distribution of dispersed magnetic particles. The particles investigated here are (i) single anionic and cationic nanoparticles of diameter D approximately 7 nm and (ii) nanoparticle clusters resulting from electrostatic complexation with polyelectrolytes and polyelectrolyte-neutral copolymers. A theoretical expression of the sedimentation concentration profiles at the steady state is proposed, and it is found to accurately describe the experimental data. When compared to dynamic light scattering, vibrating sample magnetometry, and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy, magnetic sedimentation exhibits a unique property: it provides the core size and core size distribution of nanoparticle aggregates.

Abstract:Magnetorheological fluids (MRFs) are primarily composed of magnetic particles suspended in carrier liquids, exhibiting a remarkable capacity to respond dynamically to external magnetic fields. However, the phenomenon of solid–liquid phase separation, attributable to particle sedimentation, represents a formidable barrier to the real-world application of MRFs in engineering contexts. As a result, it becomes critically imperative to conduct a thorough investigation into the sedimentation behavior of MRFs under static conditions, to significantly enhance their practical utility. In the study, computational analysis through COMSOL was utilized to elucidate the sedimentation dynamics of MRFs. The findings indicated that particle sedimentation harbored the potential to induce localized turbulence within the flow field, thereby significantly impacting the sedimentation dynamics of MRFs. The motion of particles consistently followed a pattern where sedimentation rates decreased as the viscosity of the carrier liquids increased. Moreover, the elucidation of the settling behavior of MRFs was facilitated by the introduction of two dimensionless numbers. These dimensionless numbers were employed to systematically characterize the temporal evolution of the supernatant height throughout the settling process. This investigation further explored the intricate interdependence between these dimensionless parameters via a comprehensive series of settling experiments. The outcomes of this research uncovered a unique pattern in the solid–liquid separation process of MRFs, marked by a phase of gradual initiation, followed by acceleration, and culminating in deceleration. However, as the viscosity of the carrier liquids increased, this pattern became less pronounced, gradually shifting toward a more uniform settling trajectory.

Application of atomic magnetometry in magnetic particle detection

Abstract:We demonstrate the detection of magnetic particles carried by water in a continuous flow using an atomic magnetic gradiometer. Studies on three types of magnetic particles are presented: a single cobalt particle (diameter ~150 um, multi-domain), a suspension of superparamagnetic magnetite particles (diameter \~1 um), and ferromagnetic cobalt nanoparticles (diameter ~10 nm, 120 kA/m magnetization). Estimated detection limits are 20 um diameter for a single cobalt particle at a water flow rate 30 ml/min, 5x10^3 magnetite particles at 160 ml/min, and 50 pl for the specific ferromagnetic fluid at 130 ml/min. Possible applications of our method are discussed.

Abstract:In the present paper, the sedimentation stability and characterization method of the dense magnetic suspension system with mechanics-electricity coupling effect are discussed by means of chemical analysis. The experiments showed that the sedimentation stability of the suspension system dispersed with micron magnetic particles could be greatly improved by adding proper amounts of nano-scale particles. This result is the same as the sedimentation stability of other dense micron particle suspension systems with electrorheological effect. Meanwhile, the shear stress of magnetic dense suspensions varied evidently with the added amounts of nano-scale particles.

Abstract:A magnetic field is generated to modify the effective gravity acting on settling particles in a laboratory experiment. When applied to a magnetized spherical particle settling in water-glycerol mixtures, the magnetic field produces a vertical force that counteracts the gravitational field, hence allowing for the magnetic tuning of the settling properties of the particle. While doing so, the spin of the particle around the direction perpendicular to the applied magnetic field is blocked, thus allowing spin solely around the direction of the magnetic field. This method of magnetic modification of the effective gravity is tested on the settling of spherical magnets in quiescent fluids over Galileo numbers in the range [100, 300] and a fixed particle density of 8200 kg/m . The results obtained by varying the Galileo number via the magnetic modification of effective gravity are compared to those obtained with non-magnetic spheres when the Galileo number is modified by varying the fluid's viscosity. We show that the same taxonomy of settling regimes with nearly identical geometrical properties (in terms of planarity and obliqueness) of the trajectories is recovered. In addition to proving that it is possible to magnetically tame the settling of particles in fluids preserving the features of the non-magnetic case, this also reveals that blocking the spin of the particles does not produce any significant effect on its settling properties in a quiescent fluid. This novel experimental methodology opens new possibilities to experimentally explore many other subtle aspects of the coupling between settling particles and fluids (for instance, to disentangle the effects of rotation, inertia, and/or anisotropy of the particles) in more complex situations including the case of turbulent flows.

Abstract:Magnetorheological fluids (MRFs) is composed of carbonyl iron (CI) powder distributed in carrier fluid. This paper studied the sedimentation behavior of MRFs in a cylindrical column by using direct visual observation (VO). In order to obtain the settlement law of MRFs with respect to particle concentration and surfactant contents, MRF samples with different particles volume fractions (i.e., 4, 10, 20 and 28 vol%) and with different surfactant mass fractions (i.e., none, 2, 4 and 5 wt%) were prepared, separately. And the commercial MRFs with the same magnetic particles volume fraction was used as the control group. In addition, the morphology of bare CI and surface modified CI particles samples were measured, experimentally, by light microscope. At last, three different settling velocity models (Vesilind model, Dick model, and Richardson and Zaki model) were considered to acquire the sedimentation velocity of magnetic particle concentration of MRF samples. Results present Dick model is more suited to the sedimentation rule of MRF sample in our study. The propagation velocity formula of the volumetric concentration of particles was also established on the basis of sedimentation velocity of particles and the particle setting velocity equation with the variational surfactant contents was also obtained.

Abstract:We have developed a rapid method of characterizing the fine‐scale variation (sub‐micron to hundreds of microns, µm) in the grain size of magnetite in long sediment cores. This method is a new rock magnetic tool and can be readily applied to the following disciplines: (1) environmental studies; (2) hydrology; (3) petrology; and (4) geomagnetism. The method consists of a comparative plot of the depth variation of two magnetic parameters. The first parameter, low field (less than 0.1 millitesla, mT, or 1 Oe) susceptibility in a steady field is plotted on the abscissa. The second parameter, anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM) imparted by a smoothly decreasing AF of peak value 100 mT (1,000 Oe) in the presence of a weak steady field (0.01‐0.1 mT, or 0.1‐1 Oe) is plotted on the ordinate. For a sediment column in which the magnetic mineral is magnetite, a plot of the two magnetic parameters shows transitions in the average magnetic grain size with depth as clearly discernible changes in the slope of a regression line fit to the individual points (χ, ARM).

Abstract:The behaviours of non-magnetic particles inside a ferrofluid have a significant effect on the performance of ferrofluid-based biosensors, such as antibody detection. The present work numerically investigates the sedimentation process of two non-magnetic spherical particles inside a ferrofluid under a uniform external magnetic field. A three-dimensional lattice Boltzmann model coupled with the bounce-back schemes is employed to simulate the corresponding flows. The present work particularly focuses on the effects of the magnetic field orientation and intensity on the sedimentation behaviours. The results show that the two particles are accelerated in a vertical magnetic field due to the reduction of drag, but decelerated in the magnetic field with the orientation of 30∘≤θ≤90∘ . The inter-particle collision is encouraged by the attractive dipole force for 0∘≤θ≤45∘ , resulting in an earlier occurrence of the 'kissing' stage, but is suppressed by the repulsive dipole force for 60∘≤θ≤90∘ , leading to a postponement or even the absence of the 'kissing' stage. Meanwhile, it is found that the time duration of the 'drafting' stage decreases with the increasing of the magnetic field intensity. When the magnetic field intensity is beyond a critical value, the two particles self-assemble into a 'dumbbell-like' structure and the 'tumbling' stage will disappear during the sedimentation process. The present work demonstrates that the sedimentation behaviour of non-magnetic particles immersed in a ferrofluid can be controlled by varying the orientation and intensity of the external magnetic field, which can provide a valuable technical guidance for the industrial applications of ferrofluids.

Abstract:This paper reported an efficient method to sizeselective separate magnetic nanospheres using a self-focusing microfluidic channel equipped with a permanent magnet. Under external magnetic field, the magnetophoresis force exerted on particles leads to size-dependent deflections from their laminar flow paths and results in effective particles separation. By adjusting the distance between magnet and main path of channel, we obtained two monodisperse nanosphere samples (Ca. 90 nm, Ca. 160 nm) from polydispersing particles solution whose diameters varied from 40 to 280 nm. Based on the magnetostatic and laminar flow models, numerical simulations were also used to predict and optimize the nanospheres migrations. Two thresholds of particles diameters were obtained by the simulations and diverse at each position of magnet. Therefore, appropriate position of the magnet could be determined at a certain particle sizes' range when the flow rate of the two inlets remains unchanged.

Abstract:Concentrating particles to a detectable level is often necessary in many applications. Although magnetic force has long been used to enrich magnetic (or magnetically tagged) particles in suspensions, magnetic concentration of diamagnetic particles is relatively new and little reported. We demonstrate in this work a simple magnetic technique to concentrate polystyrene particles and live yeast cells in ferrofluid flow through a straight rectangular microchannel using negative magnetophoresis. The magnetic field gradient is created by two attracting permanent magnets that are placed on the top and bottom of the planar microfluidic device and held in position by their natural attractive force. The magnet–magnet distance is mainly controlled by the thickness of the device substrate and can be made small, allowing for the use of a dilute ferrofluid in the developed magnetic concentration technique. This advantage not only enables a magnetic/fluorescent label-free handling of diamagnetic particles, but also renders such handling biocompatible.

Abstract:Abstract The density of magnetic fluid is important for some applications such as mineral processing. Magnetic fluid is a nano-sized magnetic material which has superparamagnetism. The density of magnetic fluid with no magnetic field was introduced. The measuring method was studied and the calculating formula was deduced. Since magnetic fluid could be magnetized, it could be controlled by magnetic field. The density of magnetic fluid could be changed by magnetic field. The buoyancy of magnetic fluid in magnetic field was researched and it was concluded that the buoyancy force of magnetic fluid in magnetic field is related to the mass, the volume, the permeability, the magnetization of magnetic fluid and the gradient of magnetic field. For a certain magnetic fluid, the parameters of itself are fixed. Then the gradient of magnetic field is the mainly factor influencing the magnetic force. A density measuring method for magnetic fluid in magnetic field was introduced. A mineral separation device based on magnetic fluid was introduced. And the principle of the mineral separation device with magnetic fluid was studied. More kinds of magnetic fluid and applications could be explored by researching magnetic fluid.

In this review, experimental results and fundamental theoretical approaches are systematized to predict the micro- and macroscopic behavior of magnetic fluid systems under different external influences. The article serves as working material for both experienced scientists in the field of magnetic fluids and novice specialists who are just beginning to investigate this topic.

Abstract:This paper, as the title indicates, deals with the depositing mechanism of the particles under the magnetic field in the lubricant for on-line ferrograph or oil analysis. Lubricant, containing ferromagnetic particles, is taken as the multiphasic ferromagnetic fluid in ferrograph detecting. By measuring and regressing, the distribution formulas of magnetic density and magnetic density gradient of an electromagnet are gained. The variance law of viscosity of lubricant in the non-uniform magnetic field is studied and a viscosity formula is put forward. The motion law of ferromagnetic particles in the non-uniform magnetic field is studied and a standpoint is put forward, which is that the ferromagnetic particles cannot achieve a constant sinking velocity in a non-uniform magnetic field. The factors influencing particles motion, such as particle diameter, ratio of particles volume and air bubbles, are also studied. Some results are obtained and discussed, which are of practical significance in the research and design of on-line ferrograph and other methods of on-line oil monitoring.

Abstract:We present a falling-sphere viscometer with a magnetized sphere and fluxgate magnetometers continuously measuring the magnetic field produced at the sensor positions by the falling sphere. With a fluid volume of 15 ml and within a few seconds, we directly measure dynamical viscosities in a range between 200 cP and 3000 cP with a precision of 3\%.

Abstract:Magnetic microsphere comprises a magnetically responsive metal or metal oxide core surrounded by a polymer shell with active groups. Nowadays, methods of directly coating polymer, monomer polymerazation, impregnation, extrusion and biological synthesis are generally used to prepare magnetic particles. This kind of superparamagnetic microspheres can be attached to chemical, biochemical and biological substances by their active groups, then applying a magnetic field to separate from the media. Preparation and utilization of magnetic microspheres in immunoassay, nucleic acid hybrization assay, gene sequencing, cell isolation, enzyme immoblization, receptor isolation and other Gelds are reviewed with 44 references in this paper. Also, the further development is outlooked.

Abstract:The influence of the particle size on the rheological property of magnetic fluid was studied both by the experimental and computer simulation methods. Firstly, the magnetic fluids were prepared by dispersing Fe3O4 nanospheres with size varied from 40nm to 100nm and 200nm in the solution. Then, the rheological properties were investigated and it was found that the relative magnetorheological effects increased with increasing the particle size. Finally, the molecular dynamic simulation was used to analyze the mechanical characteristics of the magnetic fluid and the chain-like model agreed well with the experimental result. The authentic chain-like structure observed by a microscope agreed with the simulation results. The three particles composed of the similar cluster nanostructure, thus they exhibited similar magnetic property. To this end, the unique assembling microstructures was the origination of the mechanical difference. And it was found that the higher MR (magnetorheological) effects of the large particle based magnetic fluid was originated from the stronger assembling microstructure under the applying magnetic field.

Abstract:Nonlinear second-harmonic magnetic response (M2) was used to characterize an aqueous colloidal solution of dextran-coated magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles. Data analysis with the formalism based on Gilbert-Landau-Lifshitz equation for stochastic dynamics of superparamagnetic (SP) particles ensured extensive quantifying of the system via a set of magnetic and magnetodynamic parameters, such as the mean magnetic moment, the damping constant, the longitudinal relaxation time, the magnetic anisotropy field and energy, and others. Combined with transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering, M2 technique allowed obtaining additional parameters, viz., the dextran-coating thickness and the interparticle magnetic dipolar energy. Aggregated colloidal nanoparticles were shown to be magnetically correlated inside the aggregate due to magnetic dipole-dipole (d-d) coupling within the correlation radius ~50 nm. With the d-d coupling account, the volume distribution of the aggregates recovered from M2 measurements is well consistent with electron microscopy results. From electron magnetic resonance, abrupt change of SP dynamics with increasing external magnetic field was observed and explained. The presented study exemplifies a novel M2-based procedure of comprehensive quantitative characterization applicable for a wide variety of SP systems.
