Abstract:In this note a very simple example is given which shows that if the sum of two semigroup generators is itself a generator, the generated semigroup in general can not be rapresented by the Lie-Trotter product formula.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to give a characterization in Hilbert spaces of the generators of $C_0$-semigroups associated with closed, sectorial forms in terms of the convergence of a generalized Trotter's product formula. In the course of the proof of the main result we also present a similarity result which can be of independent interest: for any unbounded generator $A$ of a $C_0$-semigroup $e^{tA}$ it is possible to introduce an equivalent scalar product on the space, such that $e^{tA}$ becomes non-quasi-contractive with respect to the new scalar product.

Closed Form of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff Formula for the Generators of Semisimple Complex Lie Algebras

Abstract:Recently it has been introduced an algorithm Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff (BCH) formula, which extends the Van-Brunt and Visser recent results, leading to new closed forms of BCH formula. More recently, it has been shown that there are {\it 13 types} of such commutator algebras. We show, by providing the explicit solutions, that these include the generators of the semisimple complex Lie algebras. More precisely, for any pair, $X$, $Y$ of the Cartan-Weyl basis, we find $W$, linear combination of $X$, $Y$, such that $$ \exp(X) \exp(Y)=\exp(W) $$ The derivation of such closed forms follows, in part, by using the above mentioned recent results. The complete derivation is provided by considering the structure of of the root system. Furthermore, if $X$, $Y$ and $Z$ are three generators of the Cartan-Weyl basis, we find, for a wide class of cases, $W$, linear combination of $X$, $Y$ and $Z$, such that $$ \exp(X) \exp(Y) \exp(Z)=\exp(W) $$ It turns out that the relevant commutator algebras are {\it type 1c-i}, {\it type 4} and {\it type 5}. A key result concerns an iterative application of the algorithm leading to relevant extensions of the cases admitting closed forms of the BCH formula. Here we provide the main steps of such an iteration that will be developed in a forthcoming paper.

Abstract:Abstract. We produce infinitely many finite 2-groups that do not embed with index 2 in any group generated by involutions. This disproves a conjecture of Lemmermeyer and restricts the possible Galois groups of unramified 2-extensions, Galois over Q, of quadratic number fields.

On the commutator length of compact Lie groups

Abstract:In this short note we show that the path-connected component of the identity of the derived subgroup of a compact Lie group consists just of commutators. We also discuss an application of our main result to the homotopy type of the classifying space for commutativity for a compact Lie group whose path-connected component of the identity is abelian.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a group and $\alpha: G \times G \to G$ denote the commutator map. In the case of finite groups, Frobenius gave the formula to compute the cardinalities of the fibres $\alpha^{-1}(g)$ in terms of the character values $\chi(g)$ for irreducible characters $\chi$ of $G$. We generalise this formula to compact Lie groups. Further, we connect this generalised formula to the commutator probability of the concerned groups.

Abstract:We consider a Trotter-type-product formula for approximating the solution of a linear abstract Cauchy problem (given by a strongly continuous semigroup), where the underlying Banach space is a product of two spaces. In contrast to the classical Trotter-product formula, the approximation is given by freezing subsequently the components of each subspace. After deriving necessary stability estimates for the approximation, which immediately provide convergence in the natural strong topology, we investigate convergence in the operator norm. The main result shows that an almost optimal convergence rate can be established if the dominant operator generates a holomorphic semigroup and the off-diagonal coupling operators are bounded.

Abstract:Assume that $P$ and $Q$ are elements of $A_1$ satisfying $[P,Q] = 1$. The Dixmier Conjecture for $A_1$ says that they always generate $A_1$. We show that if $P$ is a sum of not more than~$4$ homogeneous elements of $A_1$ then $P$ and $Q$ generate $A_1$, which generalizes the main result in arXiv:2210.00257.

Abstract:We study in detail the operad controlling several pre-Lie algebra structures sharing the same Lie bracket. Specifically, we show that this operad admits a combinatorial description similar to that of Chapoton and Livernet for the pre-Lie operad, and that it has many of the remarkable algebraic properties of the pre-Lie operad.

Abstract:Suppose that A and B are two positive-definite matrices, then, the limit of (Ap/2BpAp/2)1/p as p tends to 0 can be obtained by the well known Lie-Trotter formula. In this article, we generalize the usual product of matrices to the Hadamard product denoted as * which is commutative, and obtain the explicit formula of the limit (Ap * Bp)1/p as p tends to 0. Furthermore, the existence of the limit of (Ap * Bp)1/p as p tends to +∞ is proved.

Abstract:We generalize a fundamental theorem on positive matrix semigroups stating that each component is either strictly positive for all times or identically zero ("Lévy's Theorem"). Our proof of this fact that does not require the matrices to be continuous at time zero. We also provide a formulation of this theorem in the terminology of positive operator semigroups on sequence spaces.

Abstract:The notion of conditional coproduct of a family of abelian pro-Lie groups in the category of abelian pro-Lie groups is introduced. It is shown that the cartesian product of an arbitrary family of abelian pro-Lie groups can be characterized by the universal property of the conditional coproduct.

Abstract:We give a simple recursion for the minimal generators $G=\{g_i\}$ of the generic value set $\Lambda_{gen}$ of a plane curve germ $C$ with a two-generator semigroup $\Gamma \langle p, m \rangle$. The recursion provides for explicit calculation of all $g_i$ and shows that they are in fact minimal generators. Explicit formulas for the cardinality of the minimal generators $|G|$ and for the conductor $c(\Lambda_{gen})$ of $\Lambda_{gen}$ are given. The recursion can be used to compute the generic Tjurina number $\tau_{gen}$ in this case, a method we compare to that given by Alberich-Carrami\~nana, Almir\'on, Blanco, and Melle-Hern\'andez (arXiv:1904.02652). The main result is based on the non-explicit algorithm and ideas of Delorme.
Suzuki Type Estimates for Exponentiated Sums and Generalized Lie-Trotter Formulas in Banach Algebras

Abstract:In this note, we employ Jordan product within Banach algebras to present two error estimates of Lie-Trotter product formulas. Additionally, we introduce two generalized Lie-Trotter formula and provide two explicit estimation formulas. Consequently, the renowned Suzuki symmetrized approximation for the exponentiated sums follows directly from our Theorem 2.3. To conclude our paper, we offer a partial answer to a question concerning the Suzuki type estimations in Jordan-Banach algebras.

Writing finite simple groups of Lie type as products of subset conjugates

Abstract:The Liebeck-Nikolov-Shalev conjecture [LNS12] asserts that, for any finite simple non-abelian group $G$ and any set $A\subseteq G$ with $|A|\geq 2$, $G$ is the product of at most $N\frac{\log|G|}{\log|A|}$ conjugates of $A$, for some absolute constant $N$. For $G$ of Lie type, we prove that for any $\varepsilon>0$ there is some $N_{\varepsilon}$ for which $G$ is the product of at most $N_{\varepsilon}\left(\frac{\log|G|}{\log|A|}\right)^{1+\varepsilon}$ conjugates of either $A$ or $A^{-1}$. For symmetric sets, this improves on results of Liebeck, Nikolov, and Shalev [LNS12] and Gill, Pyber, Short, and Szabó [GPSS13]. During the preparation of this paper, the proof of the Liebeck-Nikolov-Shalev conjecture was completed by Lifshitz [Lif24]. Both papers use [GLPS24] as a starting point. Lifshitz's argument uses heavy machinery from representation theory to complete the conjecture, whereas this paper achieves a more modest result by rather elementary combinatorial arguments.

Abstract:Write $P_k:= \mathbb F_2[x_1,x_2,\ldots ,x_k]$ for the polynomial algebra over the prime field $\mathbb F_2$ with two elements, in $k$ generators $x_1, x_2, \ldots , x_k$, each of degree 1. The polynomial algebra $P_k$ is considered as a module over the mod-2 Steenrod algebra, $\mathcal A$. Let $GL_k$ be the general linear group over the field $\mathbb F_2$. This group acts naturally on $P_k$ by matrix substitution. Since the two actions of $\mathcal A$ and $GL_k$ upon $P_k$ commute with each other, there is an inherit action of $GL_k$ on $\mathbb F_2{\otimes}_{\mathcal A}P_k$. Denote by $(\mathbb F_2{\otimes}_{\mathcal A}P_k)_n^{GL_k}$ the subspace of $\mathbb F_2{\otimes}_{\mathcal A}P_k$ consisting of all the $GL_k$-invariant classes of degree $n$. In 1989, Singer [24] defined the homological algebraic transfer $$\varphi_k :\mbox{Tor}^{\mathcal A}_{k,k+n}(\mathbb F_2,\mathbb F_2) \longrightarrow (\mathbb F_2{\otimes}_{\mathcal A}P_k)_n^{GL_k},$$ where $\mbox{Tor}^{\mathcal{A}}_{k, k+n}(\mathbb{F}_2, \mathbb{F}_2)$ is the dual of Ext$_{\mathcal{A}}^{k,k+n}(\mathbb F_2,\mathbb F_2)$, the $E_2$ term of the Adams spectral sequence of spheres. In general, the transfer $\varphi_k$ is not a monomorphism and Singer made a conjecture that $\varphi_k$ is an epimorphism for any $k \geqslant 0$. The conjecture is studied by many authors. It is true for $k \leqslant 3$ but unknown for $k \geqslant 4$. In this paper, by using a technique of the Peterson hit problem we prove that Singer's conjecture is not true for $k=5$ and the internal degree $n = 108$. This result also refutes a one of Phúc in [19].
