Abstract:We investigate optomechanical coupling between one-dimensional interacting bosons and the electromagnetic field in a high-finesse optical cavity. We show that by tuning interatomic interactions, one can realize effective optomechanics with mechanical resonators ranging from side-mode excitations of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) to particle-hole excitations of a Tonks-Girardeau (TG) gas. We propose that this unique feature can be formulated to detect the BEC-TG gas crossover and measure the sine-Gordon transition continuously and nondestructively.

Abstract:Within the framework of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics, we investigate both the radiation force and the potential of Casimir-Polder type acting on an excited cold two-level atom in a cavity made of left-handed materials and topological insulators. As the time-reversal symmetry is broken on the surface of the topological insulators, the spontaneous emission of the atom placed near the focus point(s) exhibits anisotropic properties. While the potential wells are normally shallow for topological trivial dielectric, they may be amplified in the presence of topological magnetoelectric effect. We find that when there exists only one focus point in the cavity, it is possible to boost the forces or the potential wells by up to one order of magnitude. Meanwhile, the lifetime of the atom could be prolonged owing to the focus effect of the left-handed materials, where the emitted photons can trace back to the atom and reabsorbed by itself. Our results indicate the possibility in forming long-lived potential wells, which may have potential applications in trapping and guiding cold atoms far away from the surface. Cavity Optomechanical Coupling Assisted by an Atomic Gas

Abstract:We theoretically study a cavity filled with atoms, which provides the optical-mechanical interaction between the modified cavity photonic field and a movable mirror at one end. We show that the cavity field “dresses” these atoms, producing two types of polaritons, effectively enhancing the radiation pressure of the cavity field upon the end mirror, as well as establishing an additional squeezing mode of the end mirror. This squeezing produces an adiabatic entanglement, which is absent in usual vacuum cavities, between the oscillating mirror and the rest of the system. We analyze the entanglement and quantify it using the Loschmidt echo and fidelity.

Abstract:We investigated the optomechanical dynamics and explored the quantum phase of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a ring cavity. The interaction between the atoms and the cavity field in the running wave mode induces a semiquantized spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for the atoms. We found that the evolution of the magnetic excitations of the matter field resembles that of an optomechanical oscillator moving in a viscous optical medium, with very good integrability and traceability, regardless of the atomic interaction. Moreover, the light-atom coupling induces a sign-changeable long-range interatomic interaction, which reshapes the typical energy spectrum of the system in a drastic manner. As a result, a new quantum phase featuring a high quantum degeneracy was found in the transitional area for SOC. Our scheme is immediately realizable and the results are measurable in experiments.

Abstract:A new extended Dicke model, which includes atom-atom interactions and a driving classical laser field, is established for a Bose-Einstein condensate inside an ultrahigh-finesse optical cavity. A feasible experimental setup with a strong atom-field coupling is proposed, where most parameters are easily controllable and thus the predicted second-order superradiant-normal phase transition may be detected by measuring the ground-state atomic population. More intriguingly, a novel second-order phase transition from the superradiant phase to the \textquotedblleft Mott" phase is also revealed. In addition, a rich and exotic phase diagram is presented.
Bose-Einstein Condensates in an Atom-Optomechanical System with Effective Global Nonuniform Interaction

Abstract:We consider a hybrid atom-optomechanical system consisting of a mechanical membrane inside an optical cavity and an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate outside the cavity. The condensate is confined in an optical lattice potential formed by a traveling laser beam reflected off one cavity mirror. We derive the cavity-mediated effective atom-atom interaction potential and find that it is nonuniform, site-dependent, and does not decay as the interatomic distance increases. We show that the presence of this effective interaction breaks the ${Z}_{2}$ symmetry of the system and gives rise to new quantum phases and phase transitions. When the long-range interaction dominates, the condensate breaks the translation symmetry and turns into a novel self-organized latticelike state with increasing particle densities for sites farther away from the cavity. We present the phase diagram of the system and investigate the stabilities of different phases by calculating their respective excitation spectra. The system can serve as a platform to explore various self-organized phenomena induced by the long-range interactions.

Abstract:We reveal the cooperative effect of coherent and dissipative magnon-photon couplings in an open cavity magnonic system, which leads to nonreciprocity with a considerably large isolation ratio and flexible controllability. Furthermore, we discover unidirectional invisibility for microwave propagation, which appears at the zero-damping condition for hybrid magnon-photon modes. A simple model is developed to capture the generic physics of the interference between coherent and dissipative couplings, which accurately reproduces the observations over a broad range of parameters. This general scheme could inspire methods to achieve nonreciprocity in other systems.

Abstract:Radiation pressure forces in cavity optomechanics allow for efficient cooling of vibrational modes of macroscopic mechanical resonators, the manipulation of their quantum states, as well as generation of optomechanical entanglement. The standard mechanism relies on the cavity photons directly modifying the state of the mechanical resonator. Hybrid cavity optomechanics provides an alternative approach by coupling mechanical objects to quantum emitters, either directly or indirectly via the common interaction with a cavity field mode. While many approaches exist, they typically share a simple effective description in terms of a single force acting on the mechanical resonator. More generally, one can study the interplay between various forces acting on the mechanical resonator in such hybrid mechanical devices. This interplay can lead to interference effects that may, for instance, improve cooling of the mechanical motion or lead to generation of entanglement between various parts of the hybrid device. Here, we provide such an example of a hybrid optomechanical system where an ensemble of quantum emitters is embedded into the mechanical resonator formed by a vibrating membrane. The interference between the radiation pressure force and the mechanically modulated Tavis--Cummings interaction leads to enhanced cooling dynamics in regimes in which neither force is efficient by itself. Our results pave the way towards engineering novel optomechanical interactions in hybrid optomechanical systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that the dynamical Casimir effect can be observed in a hybrid cavity optomechanical system. By introducing a two-level atom into the cavity, the atomic transition from an excited state to the ground state can evoke a two-photon process. Our proposal does not require a driving field to induce the dynamical Casimir effect, which is very alternative to previous schemes. Furthermore, we show that when the atom is replaced by an identical atomic ensemble, the system not only can simulate the similar dynamic Casimir effect, but also exist more plentiful physical phenomena, i.e., higher-order resonance. Numerical simulation confirms the validity of our derivation.

Cavity-Induced Quantum Interference and Collective Interactions in van der Waals Systems

Abstract:The central topic of this letter is to show that light-matter hybridization not only gives rise to novel dynamic responses but can also modify intermolecular interactions and induce new structural order. Using the van der Waals (vdW) system in an optical cavity as an example, we predict the effects of interference and collectivity in cavity-induced many-body dispersion interactions. Specifically, the leading order correction due to cavity-induced quantum fluctuations leads to 3-body and 4-body vdW interactions, which can align intermolecular vectors and are not pairwise additive. In addition, the cavity-induced dipole leads to a single-molecule energy shift that aligns individual molecules, and a pair-wise interaction that scales as $R^{-3}$ instead of the standard $R^{-6}$ distance scaling. The coefficients of all these cavity-induced corrections depend on the cavity frequency and are renormalized by the effective Rabi frequency, which in turn depends on the particle density. Finally, we study the interaction of the vdW system in a cavity with an external object and find a significant enhancement in the interaction range due to modified distance scaling laws. These theoretical predictions suggest the possibility of cavity-induced nematic or smectic order and may provide an essential clue to understanding intriguing phenomena observed in optical cavities, such as strongly-modified ground-state reactivity, ion transport and solvent polarity.

Theoretical exploration of competing phases of lattice Bose gases in a cavity

Abstract:We consider bosonic atoms loaded into optical lattices with cavity-mediated infinite-range interactions. Competing short- and global-range interactions cultivates a rich phase diagram. With a systematic field-theoretical perspective, we present an $\emph{analytical}$ construction of global ground-state phase diagram. We find that the infinite-range interaction enhances the fluctuation of the number density. In the strong coupling regime, we find four branches of elementary excitations with two being "partilce-like" and two being "hole-like", and that the excitation gap becomes soft at the phase boundary between compressible phases and incompressible phases. We derive an effective theory describing compressible superfluid and supersolid states. To complement this perturbative study, we construct a self-consistent mean-field theory and find numerical results consistent with our theoretical analysis. We map out the phase diagram and find that a charge density wave may undergo a structure phase transition to a different charge density wave before it finally enters into the supersolid phase driven by increasing the hopping amplitude.

Theory of Quantum Light-Matter Interaction in Cavities: Extended Systems and the Long Wavelength Approximation

Abstract:When light and matter interact strongly, the coupled system inherits properties from both constituents. It is consequently possible to alter the properties of either by engineering the other. This intriguing possibility has lead to the emergence of the cavity-materials-engineering paradigm which seeks to tailor material properties by engineering the fluctuations of a dark electromagnetic environment. The theoretical description of hybrid light-matter systems is complicated by the combined complexity of a realistic description of the extended electronic and quantum electromagnetic fields. Here we derive an effective, non-perturbative theory for low dimensional crystals embedded in a paradigmatic Fabry-Pérot resonator in the long-wavelength limit. The theory encodes the multi-mode nature of the electromagnetic field into an effective single-mode scheme and it naturally follows from requiring a negligible momentum transfer from the photonic system to the matter. Crucially, in the effective theory the single light mode is characterized by a finite effective mode volume even in the limit of bulk cavity-matter systems and can be directly determined by realistic cavity parameters. As a consequence, the coupling of the effective mode to matter remains finite for bulk materials. By leveraging on the realistic description of the cavity system we make our effective theory free from the double counting of the coupling of matter to the electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations of free space. Our results provide a substantial step towards the realistic description of interacting cavity-matter systems at the level of the fundamental Hamiltonian, by effectively including the electromagnetic environment and going beyond the perfect mirrors approximation.

Abstract:We present a scheme to realize the (extended) Bose-Hubbard model in an N-coupled optomechanical system. By treating the cavities as intermediary and eliminating them adiabatically with the condition of large detuning or fast decay, we can obtain the effective Hamiltonian for the N oscillators, with the regular terms in the Bose-Hubbard model, i. e., the pair tunnelings and the density-density interactions. Then we verify and provide the condition for our approximation with numerical results. Due to the existence of the pair tunnelings and the density-density interactions, we can investigate the density wave and supersolid phases in our model. Moreover, we also discuss the competition between the regular tunneling and the pair tunneling.

Abstract:Motional ground-state cooling and quantum-coherent manipulation of mesoscopic mechanical systems are crucial goals in both fundamental physics and applied science. We demonstrate that the motional ground state can be achieved in the highly unresolved sideband regime, through coherent auxiliary cavity interferences. We further illustrate coherent strong Rabi coupling between indirectly coupled and individually optimized mechanical resonators and optical cavities through effective dark-mode interaction. The proposed approach provides a platform for quantum manipulation of mesoscopic mechanical devices beyond the resolved sideband limit.

Abstract:In this work, a theoretical scheme is proposed for improving the performance of cooling and entanglement. The physical model is based on a double cavity optomechanical system assisted by the field‐mediated coherent feedback. This scheme can go beyond the resolved sideband and may provide a new path for the optomechanical manipulation involving the low‐frequency mechanical resonator. The cooling performance is evaluated by calculating the final mean phonon number. The steady‐state bipartite entanglement between the optical mode and mechanical mode is measured by the logarithmic negativity. The result manifests that with assistance of the quantum coherent feedback, the mechanical resonator (MR) can be cooled close to its quantum ground state and the steady‐state optomechanical entanglement is simultaneously created, all of which are obtained under the condition beyond the resolved sideband. The presented feedback strategy is measurement‐independent, which can effectively preserve the quantum coherence of system. The scheme is conducive to relaxing the current experimental condition and it may provide a new path for the optomechanical manipulation involving the low‐frequency MR.

Abstract:We theoretically study the transmission spectrums of the cavity field in a double-cavity optomechanical system with Cross-Kerr (CK) effect. The system consists of two tunneling coupling optomechanical cavities with a mechanical resonator as a coupling interface. By doping CK medium into the mechanical resonator, CK couplings between the cavity fields and the mechanical resonator are introduced. We investigate the effects of CK coupling strength on the transmission spectrum of the cavity field including the transmission rate, nonreciprocity and four-wave mixing (FWM). We find that the transmission spectrum of the probe field can show two obvious transparent windows, which can be widened by increasing the CK coupling strength. For the transmission between the two cavity fields, the perfect nonreciprocity and reciprocity present and modulated by CK coupling and phase difference between two effective optomechanical coupling. In addition, the effects of the optomechanical and CK couplings on FWM show that the single peak of FWM is split into three symmetrical peaks due to the introduction of the CK effect.

Abstract:In this letter, we investigate the ground state properties of an optomechanical system consisting of a coupled cavity and mechanical modes. An exact solution is given when the ratio $\eta$ between the cavity and mechanical frequencies tends to infinity. This solution reveals a coherent photon occupation in the ground state by breaking continuous or discrete symmetries, exhibiting an equilibrium quantum phase transition (QPT). In the $U(1)$-broken phase, an unstable Goldstone mode can be excited. In the model featuring $Z_2$ symmetry, we discover the mutually (in the finite $\eta$) or unidirectionally (in $\eta \rightarrow \infty$) dependent relation between the squeezed vacuum of the cavity and mechanical modes. In particular, when the cavity is driven by a squeezed field along the required squeezing parameter, it enables modifying the region of $Z_2$-broken phase and significantly reducing the coupling strength to reach QPTs. Furthermore, by coupling atoms to the cavity mode, the hybrid system can undergo a QPT at a hybrid critical point, which is cooperatively determined by the optomechanical and light-atom systems. These results suggest that this optomechanical system complements other phase transition models for exploring novel critical phenomena.

Exploring entanglement dynamics in an optomechanical cavity with a type- V qutrit and quantized two-mode field

Abstract:In this work, the main objective is to measure the degree of interaction of a type- V qutrit with a two-mode quantized field in an optomechanical cavity. To achieve this objective, we first deduce the Hamiltonian in the interaction picture to identify the oscillatory terms. Using the Coarse-Grained Method (CGM), we obtain the effective Hamiltonian analytically. By selecting initial conditions for the atom, the two-mode field, and the moving mirror, we can determine the state vector of the entire system through a first-order approximation of the effective Hamiltonian. With this information, we proceed to solve the Schrödinger equation, generating a coupled set of differential equations that is solved numerically based on the initial conditions. In this context, the atomic von Neumann entropy allows us to obtain the temporal evolution of the degree of entanglement of the qutrit in the cavity and the atomic population inversion. The results indicate that entanglement in this tripartite system, composed of the qutrit and the mirror-field subsystems, as well as the population inversion, can be manipulated by the initial state conditions of the system, the qutrit-field and mirror-field coupling coefficients, the pump field, and the dissipation rates of the two-mode field and the movable mirror, respectively.

Optomechanical Response of a Strongly Interacting Fermi Gas

Abstract:We study a Fermi gas with strong, tunable interactions dispersively coupled to a high-finesse cavity. Upon probing the system along the cavity axis, we observe a strong optomechanical Kerr nonlinearity originating from the density response of the gas to the intracavity field and measure it as a function of interaction strength. We find that the zero-frequency density response function of the Fermi gas increases by a factor of two from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer to the Bose-Einstein condensate regime. The results are in quantitative agreement with a theory based on operator-product expansion, expressing the density response in terms of universal functions of the interactions, the contact and the internal energy of the gas. This provides an example of a driven-dissipative, strongly correlated system with a strong nonlinear response, opening up perspectives for the sensing of weak perturbations or inducing long-range interactions in Fermi gases.
