Abstract:In this paper, two conjectures which were proposed in Luo et al (2010 Phys. Rev. A 82 052122) on the correlations in a bipartite state ρAB are studied. If the mutual information I(ρAB) between two quantum systems A and B before any measurement is considered as the total amount of correlations in the state ρAB, then it can be separated into two parts: classical correlations and quantum correlations. The so-called classical correlations C(ρAB) in the state ρAB are defined by the maximizing mutual information between two quantum systems A and B after von Neumann measurements on system B. We show that it is upper bounded by the von Neumann entropies of both subsystems A and B, which answered the conjecture on the classical correlation. If the quantum correlations Q(ρAB) in the state ρAB are defined by Q(ρAB) = I(ρAB) − C(ρAB), we also show that it is upper bounded by the von Neumann entropy of subsystem B. It is also found that Q(ρAB) is upper bounded by the von Neumann entropy of subsystem A for a class of states.

Abstract:We derive a strengthened monotonicity inequality for quantum relative entropy by employing properties of $\alpha$-Rényi relative entropy. We develop a unifying treatment towards the improvement of some quantum entropy inequalities. In particular, an emphasis is put on a lower bound of quantum conditional mutual information (QCMI) as it gives a Pinsker-like lower bound for the QCMI. We also give some improved entropy inequalities based on Rényi relative entropy. The inequalities obtained, thus, extends some well-known ones. We also obtain a condition under which a tripartite operator becomes a Markov state. As a by-product we provide some trace inequalities of operators, which are of independent interest.

Generalized Stein's lemma and asymptotic equipartition property for subalgebra entropies

Abstract:The quantum Stein's lemma is a fundamental result of quantum hypothesis testing in the context of distinguishing two quantum states. A recent conjecture, known as the ``generalized quantum Stein's lemma", asserts that this result is true in a general framework where one of the states is replaced by convex sets of quantum states. In this work, we show that the assertion of the generalized Stein's lemma is true for the setting where the second hypothesis is the state space of any subalgebra $\mathcal{N}$. This is obtained through a strong asymptotic equipartition property for smooth subalgebra entropies that applies for any fixed smoothing parameter $\epsilon\in (0,1)$. As an application in resource theory, we show that the relative entropy of a subalgebra is the asymptotic dilution cost under suitable operations. This provides a scope to establish a connection between different quantum resources.

Quantum Rényi Entropy Functionals for Bosonic Gaussian Systems

Abstract:In this study, the quantum Rényi entropy power inequality of order $p>1$ and power $\kappa$ is introduced as a quantum analog of the classical Rényi-$p$ entropy power inequality. To derive this inequality, we first exploit the Wehrl-$p$ entropy power inequality on bosonic Gaussian systems via the mixing operation of quantum convolution, which is a generalized beam-splitter operation. This observation directly provides a quantum Rényi-$p$ entropy power inequality over a quasi-probability distribution for $D$-mode bosonic Gaussian regimes. The proposed inequality is expected to be useful for the nontrivial computing of quantum channel capacities, particularly universal upper bounds on bosonic Gaussian quantum channels, and a Gaussian entanglement witness in the case of Gaussian amplifier via squeezing operations.

An entropic uncertainty principle for mixed states

Abstract:The entropic uncertainty principle in the form proven by Maassen and Uffink yields a fundamental inequality that is prominently used in many places all over the field of quantum information theory. In this work, we provide a family of versatile generalizations of this relation. Our proof methods build on a deep connection between entropic uncertainties and interpolation inequalities for the doubly stochastic map that links probability distributions in two measurements bases. In contrast to the original relation, our generalization also incorporates the von Neumann entropy of the underlying quantum state. These results can be directly used to bound the extractable randomness of a source independent QRNG in the presence of fully quantum attacks, to certify entanglement between trusted parties, or to bound the entanglement of a system with an untrusted environment.

Abstract:The quantum marginal problem asks, given a set of reduced quantum states of a multipartite system, whether there exists a joint quantum state consistent with these reduced states. The quantum marginal problem is known to be hard to solve in general as it is a variant of the N-representability problem. We provide entropic bounds on the number of orthogonal solutions to the quantum marginal problem.

Abstract:In this short report, we give some new entropy inequalities based on Rényi relative entropy and the observation made by Berta {\em et al} [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1403.6102" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1403.6102">arXiv:1403.6102</a>]. These inequalities obtained extends some well-known entropy inequalities. We also obtain a condition under which a tripartite operator becomes a Markov state.

Abstract:In this Letter, two counterexamples show that the superadditivity inequality of relative entropy is not true even for the full-ranked quantum states. Thus, an inequality of quantum channels and complementary channels is not also true. Finally, a conjecture of weak superadditivity inequality is presented.

Reversible Entanglement Beyond Quantum Operations

Abstract:We introduce a reversible theory of exact entanglement manipulation by establishing a necessary and sufficient condition for state transfer under trace-preserving transformations that completely preserve the positivity of partial transpose (PPT). Under these free transformations, we show that logarithmic negativity emerges as the pivotal entanglement measure for determining entangled states' transformations, analogous to the role of entropy in the second law of thermodynamics. Previous results have proven that entanglement is irreversible under quantum operations that completely preserve PPT and leave open the question of reversibility for quantum operations that do not generate entanglement asymptotically. However, we find that going beyond the complete positivity constraint imposed by standard quantum mechanics enables a reversible theory of exact entanglement manipulation, which may suggest a potential incompatibility between the reversibility of entanglement and the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics.

Towards Entropic Constraints on Quantum Speedups

Abstract:Some quantum algorithms have "quantum speedups": improved time complexity as compared with the best-known classical algorithms for solving the same tasks. Can we understand what fuels these speedups from an entropic perspective? Information theory gives us a multitude of metrics we might choose from to measure how fundamentally 'quantum' is the behavior of a quantum computer running an algorithm. The entanglement entropies for subsystems of a quantum state can be analyzed for subsystems of qubits in a quantum computer throughout the running of an algorithm. Here, a framework for making this entropic analysis is constructed, and performed on a selection of quantum circuits implementing known fast quantum algorithms and subroutines: Grover search, the quantum Fourier transform, and phase estimation. Our results are largely unsatisfactory: known entropy inequalities do not suffice to identify the presence or absence of quantum speedups. Although we know our algorithms must have quantum "magic", the Ingleton inequality, which holds for all entropies of subsystems of stabilizer states, is not violated in any of our examples. In some cases, however, monogamy of mutual information, which is obeyed for product states but violated for highly entangled bipartite states such as the $GHZ$ states, fails at some point in the course of our quantum circuits.

Characterization of Stabilizier States and Magic States in Terms of Tsallis and Rényi Entropies for Qubit Systems

Abstract:Uncertainty relations are fundamental in quantum mechanics, distinguishing it from classical physics by setting limits on the precision of incompatible measurements. For qubit systems, considering the three incompatible Pauli observables, we propose two entropic quantifiers of uncertainty exploiting the Tsallis entropies and Rényi entropies. We analyze the minimum and maximum uncertainty states and uncover their close connections with some important families of states in the stabilizer formalism. Explicitly, our findings show that for the two entropic quantifiers of uncertainties with suitable parameters, the stabilizer states correspond to the minimum uncertainty states, while the -type magic states correspond to the maximum uncertainty states. Additionally, we identify that the -type magic states serve as the saddle points in the Tsallis entropy framework. These results expand the recent proposed characterizations of stabilizer and magic states via the Shannon entropic uncertainty relation [Li, Luo, and Zhang, Phys. Scr. {\bf 99}, 035117 (2024)].

Asymmetry and tighter uncertainty relations for Rényi entropies via quantum-classical decompositions of resource measures

Abstract:It is known that the variance and entropy of quantum observables decompose into intrinsically quantum and classical contributions. Here a general method of constructing quantum-classical decompositions of resources such as uncertainty is discussed, with the quantum contribution specified by a measure of the noncommutativity of a given set of operators relative to the quantum state, and the classical contribution generated by the mixedness of the state. Suitable measures of noncommutativity or 'quantumness' include quantum Fisher information, and the asymmetry of a given set, group or algebra of operators, and are generalised to nonprojective observables and quantum channels. Strong entropic uncertainty relations and lower bounds for Rényi entropies are obtained, valid for arbitrary discrete observables, that take the mixedness of the state into account via a classical contribution to the lower bound. These relations can also be interpreted without reference to quantum-classical decompositions, as tradeoff relations that bound the asymmetry of one observable in terms of the entropy of another.

Continuity bounds for quantum entropies arising from a fundamental entropic inequality

Abstract:We establish a tight upper bound for the difference in von Neumann entropies between two quantum states, $\rho_1$ and $\rho_2$. This bound is expressed in terms of the von Neumann entropies of the mutually orthogonal states derived from the Jordan-Hahn decomposition of the difference operator $(\rho_1 - \rho_2)$. This yields a novel entropic inequality that implies the well-known Audenaert-Fannes (AF) inequality. In fact, it also leads to a refinement of the AF inequality. We employ this inequality to obtain a uniform continuity bound for the quantum conditional entropy of two states whose marginals on the conditioning system coincide. We additionally use it to derive a continuity bound for the quantum relative entropy in both variables. Our proofs are largely based on majorization theory and convex optimization. Interestingly, the fundamental entropic inequality is also valid in infinite dimensions.

Entropic Quantum Central Limit Theorem and Quantum Inverse Sumset Theorem

Abstract:We establish an entropic, quantum central limit theorem and quantum inverse sumset theorem in discrete-variable quantum systems describing qudits or qubits. Both results are enabled by using our recently-discovered quantum convolution. We show that the exponential rate of convergence of the entropic central limit theorem is bounded by the magic gap. We also establish an ``quantum, entropic inverse sumset theorem,'' by introducing a quantum doubling constant. Furthermore, we introduce a ``quantum Ruzsa divergence'', and we pose a conjecture called ``convolutional strong subaddivity,'' which leads to the triangle inequality for the quantum Ruzsa divergence. A byproduct of this work is a magic measure to quantify the nonstabilizer nature of a state, based on the quantum Ruzsa divergence.

Generalized Rényi entropy accumulation theorem and generalized quantum probability estimation

Abstract:The entropy accumulation theorem, and its subsequent generalized version, is a powerful tool in the security analysis of many device-dependent and device-independent cryptography protocols. However, it has the drawback that the finite-size bounds it yields are not necessarily optimal, and furthermore it relies on the construction of an affine min-tradeoff function, which can often be challenging to construct optimally in practice. In this work, we address both of these challenges simultaneously by deriving a new entropy accumulation bound. Our bound yields significantly better finite-size performance, and can be computed as an intuitively interpretable convex optimization, without any specification of affine min-tradeoff functions. Furthermore, it can be applied directly at the level of Rényi entropies if desired, yielding fully-Rényi security proofs. Our proof techniques are based on elaborating on a connection between entropy accumulation and the frameworks of quantum probability estimation or $f$-weighted Rényi entropies, and in the process we obtain some new results with respect to those frameworks as well. In particular, those findings imply that our bounds apply to prepare-and-measure protocols without the virtual tomography procedures or repetition-rate restrictions previously required for entropy accumulation.

Abstract:Resource theory of imaginarity provides a useful framework to understand the role of complex numbers, which are essential in the formulation of quantum mechanics, in a mathematically rigorous way. In the first part of this article, we study the properties of ``real'' (quantum) operations both in single-party and bipartite settings. As a consequence, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for state transformations under real operations and show the existence of ``real entanglement'' monotones. In the second part of this article, we focus on the problem of single copy state transformation via real quantum operations. When starting from pure initial states, we completely solve this problem by finding an analytical expression for the optimal fidelity of transformation, for a given probability of transformation and vice versa. Moreover, for state transformations involving arbitrary initial states and pure final states, we provide a semidefinite program to compute the optimal achievable fidelity, for a given probability of transformation.

Amortized Stabilizer Rényi Entropy of Quantum Dynamics

Abstract:Unraveling the secrets of how much nonstabilizerness a quantum dynamic can generate is crucial for harnessing the power of magic states, the essential resources for achieving quantum advantage and realizing fault-tolerant quantum computation. In this work, we introduce the amortized $\alpha$-stabilizer Rényi entropy, a magic monotone for unitary operations that quantifies the nonstabilizerness generation capability of quantum dynamics. Amortization is key in quantifying the magic of quantum dynamics, as we reveal that nonstabilizerness generation can be enhanced by prior nonstabilizerness in input states when considering the $\alpha$-stabilizer Rényi entropy, while this is not the case for robustness of magic or stabilizer extent. We demonstrate the versatility of the amortized $\alpha$-stabilizer Rényi entropy in investigating the nonstabilizerness resources of quantum dynamics of computational and fundamental interest. In particular, we establish improved lower bounds on the $T$-count of quantum Fourier transforms and the quantum evolutions of one-dimensional Heisenberg Hamiltonians, showcasing the power of this tool in studying quantum advantages and the corresponding cost in fault-tolerant quantum computation.

Abstract:We introduce a measure called reduced entropy of sublattice to quantify entanglement in spin, electron, and boson systems. By analyzing this quantity, we reveal an intriguing connection between quantum entanglement and quantum phase transitions in various strongly correlated systems: the local extremes of reduced entropy and its first derivative as functions of the coupling constant coincide, respectively, with the first and second order transition points. Exact numerical studies merely for small lattices reproduce several well-known results, demonstrating that our scenario is quite promising for exploring quantum phase transitions.
