Abstract:For an asymmetric double-well potential system, it is shown that, if the potential is quadratic until it reaches several times of the zero-point energies from the bottoms in each well, the energy eigenvalues of the low lying excited states of the double-well system must be close to the eigenvalues of the quadratic potentials. These eigenvalue structures suggest a method for the coherent control of the tunneling as well as realizing almost complete localization of the wave packet in one of the wells, by handling the double-well asymmetry. Numerical examples are included to indicate that the method could be useful also in a more general potential, and to propose experimental confirmations.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: **How to achieve almost complete localization of a wave packet in one of the wells by controlling the tunneling phenomenon in an asymmetric double - well potential system**. Specifically, the author studied the energy eigenvalues of the low - excited states in the asymmetric double - well potential system and proposed a method to achieve coherent control of the tunneling phenomenon by adjusting the asymmetry of the double wells. ### Main problem decomposition: 1. **Calculation of energy eigenvalues**: - The author derived the energy eigenvalues of the low - excited states in the asymmetric double - well potential system by means of the WKB approximation and the parabolic cylinder function method. These eigenvalues are close to the energy eigenvalues of the quadratic potential near the bottom of each well. 2. **Definition and calculation of tunneling visibility**: - In order to quantify the degree of tunneling, the author defined the tunneling visibility \( V \) and gave its calculation formula: \[ V=\frac{P_{\text{max}} - P_{\text{min}}}{P_{\text{max}}+P_{\text{min}}} \] where \( P_{\text{max}} \) and \( P_{\text{min}} \) represent the maximum and minimum probability densities of the wave function at a certain position (such as the right well) during the time evolution process, respectively. 3. **Localization of wave packets**: - By adjusting the asymmetry of the double - well potential, the wave packet can be almost completely localized in one of the wells. In particular, when the two wells can be considered to be separated, coherent destruction of tunneling (CDT), that is, complete cessation of tunneling, can be achieved. 4. **Numerical verification**: - The author verified the effectiveness of the above - mentioned theoretical methods through numerical simulation, indicating that these methods are applicable not only to exact quadratic potential wells but also to more general asymmetric double - well potential systems. ### Application prospects: - This research provides a theoretical basis for experimentally achieving precise control of the quantum tunneling phenomenon, especially in cold - atom systems in optical lattices, where the tunneling dynamics can be controlled by adjusting an external force field (such as gravity). In summary, the core problem of this paper is to explore how to use the characteristics of the asymmetric double - well potential system to achieve controllable adjustment of the quantum tunneling phenomenon through theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, and a new method for achieving wave - packet localization is proposed.
