Abstract:The ability of particles to "tunnel" through potential energy barriers is a purely quantum phenomenon. A classical particle in a symmetric double-well potential, with energy below the potential barrier, will be trapped on one side of the potential well. A quantum particle, however, can sit on both sides, in either a symmetric state or an antisymmetric state. An analogous phenomenon occurs in conservative classical systems with two degrees of freedom and no potential barriers. If only the energy is conserved, the phase space will be a mixture of regular "islands" embedded in a sea of chaos. Classically, a particle sitting in one regular island cannot reach another symmetrically located regular island when the islands are separated by chaos. However, a quantum particle can sit on both regular islands, in symmetric and antisymmetric states, due to chaos-assisted tunneling. Here, we give an overview of the theory and recent experimental observations of this phenomenon.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: **To understand the theoretical basis of the chaos - assisted tunneling (CAT) phenomenon in quantum systems and its experimental observations in different physical systems**. Specifically, the paper explores the following issues: 1. **Differences between classical and quantum systems**: - In a symmetric double - well potential, a classical particle will be confined to one side if its energy is lower than the barrier height. - A quantum particle can exist on both sides of the double - well potential simultaneously, forming symmetric and antisymmetric states. This phenomenon can also be observed in classical systems without an obvious barrier, which is called chaos - assisted tunneling. 2. **Mechanisms of chaos - assisted tunneling**: - In a conservative classical system with two degrees of freedom, when only energy is conserved, the phase space will present a mixed state with regular regions (islands) embedded in a sea of chaos. - A classical particle cannot reach a regular region at a symmetric position from another regular region, while a quantum particle can achieve this through chaos - assisted tunneling. 3. **Theoretical and experimental progress**: - The paper reviews the theoretical development of chaos - assisted tunneling and introduces the experimental observation results in systems such as cold atoms and micro - lasers in recent years. - Through these experiments, the existence of chaos - assisted tunneling has been verified, and its application potential in different physical systems has been demonstrated. 4. **Analysis of specific physical systems**: - **Two - dimensional systems**: For example, in anharmonic oscillator systems, systems without barriers but with triangular energy profiles are studied. - **Time - periodically - driven 1D systems**: For example, double - well potential systems driven by periodic forces. - **Billiard systems**: For example, asymmetric annular billiards, and the performance of chaos - assisted tunneling in wave systems is studied. - **Optical cavities and micro - lasers**: The influence of chaos - assisted tunneling on the light - emission mode in deformed optical cavities is studied. - **Cold - atom systems**: The existence of chaos - assisted tunneling has been verified by atomic - optical experiments, and the complexity under experimental conditions has been discussed. In summary, this paper aims to comprehensively summarize and explain the theoretical basis of the chaos - assisted tunneling quantum phenomenon and its experimental observation results in various physical systems, providing theoretical guidance and experimental basis for future research.
