Abstract:A hypernucleus, a subatomic bound system with at least one hyperon, is a great test ground to investigate nuclear forces and general baryonic interactions with up, down and strange quarks. Hypernuclei have been extensively studied for almost seven decades in reactions involving cosmic rays and with accelerator beams. In recent years, experimental studies of hypernuclei have entered a new stage using energetic collisions of heavy-ion beams. However, these investigations have revealed two puzzling results related to the lightest three-body hypernuclear system, the so-called hypertriton, and the unexpected existence of a bound state of two neutrons with a Λ hyperon. Solving these puzzles will not only impact our understanding of the fundamental baryonic interactions with strange quarks but also of the nature of the deep interior of neutron stars. In this Perspective, we discuss approaches to solving these puzzles, including experiments with heavy-ion beams and the analysis of nuclear emulsions using state-of-the-art technologies. We summarize ongoing projects and experiments at various facilities worldwide and outline future perspectives.

Hyperon-Nucleon Interaction Constrained by Light Hypernuclei

Abstract:Ab initio structure calculations for p-shell hypernuclei have recently become accessible through extensions of nuclear many-body methods, such as the no-core shell model, in combination with hyperon-nucleon interactions from chiral effective field theory. However, the low-energy constants in these hyperon-nucleon interactions are poorly constraint due to the very limited amount of experimental scattering data available. We present a hyperon-nucleon interaction that is additionally constrained by experimental ground-state and spectroscopic data for selected p-shell hypernuclei and, thus, optimized for hypernuclear structure calculations. We show that the previous overestimation of the hyperon separation energies in the p-shell is remedied and discuss the significantly improved description of the $_\Lambda$He isotopic chain. We further discuss the uncertainty quantification for hypernuclear observables on the many-body level, obtained through a novel machine-learning tool.

Abstract:Understanding the strong interactions within baryonic systems beyond the up and down quark sector is pivotal for a comprehensive description of nuclear forces. This study explores the interactions involving hyperons, particularly the particle, within the framework of nuclear lattice effective field theory (NLEFT). By incorporating hyperons into the NLEFT framework, we extend our investigation into the sector, allowing us to probe the third dimension of the nuclear chart. We calculate the separation energies ( ) of hypernuclei up to the medium-mass region, providing valuable insights into hyperon–nucleon ( YN ) and hyperon–nucleon–nucleon ( YNN ) interactions. Our calculations employ high-fidelity chiral interactions at N LO for nucleons and extend it to hyperons with leading-order S-wave YN interactions as well as YNN forces constrained only by the systems. Our results contribute to a deeper understanding of the SU(3) symmetry breaking and establish a foundation for future improvements in hypernuclear calculations.

Abstract:Utilizing the large quantity of hyperons and antihyperons produced by the decay of 10 billion $J/\psi$ and 2.7 billion $\psi(3686)$ collected at BESIII, the cross sections of several specific elastic or inelastic (anti-)hyperon-nucleus/nucleon rections have been measured via the scattering between the (anti-)hyperons and the nucleus in the dense objects of BESIII detector. The novel method developed in these works extends the research field and opens a new era for the experiments at $e^+ e^-$ colliders. The results of such measurements will definitely benefit a lot the precise probe of the (anti-)hyperon-nucleus/nucleon interactions and provide constraints for the studies of the potential of strong interaction, the origin of color confinement, the unified model for baryon-baryon interactions, and the internal structure of neutron stars. The desirable prospects of corresponding studies in the future Super Tau-Charm Factory (STCF) are also discussed in this report.

Abstract:Interests on few-body hypernuclei have been increased by recent results of experiments employing relativistic heavy ion beams. Some of the experiments have revealed that the lifetime of the lightest hypernucleus, hypertriton, is significantly shorter than 263 ps which is expected by considering the hypertriton to be a weakly-bound system. The STAR collaboration has also measured the hypertriton binding energy, and the deduced value is contradicting to its formerly known small binding energy. These measurements have indicated that the fundamental physics quantities of the hypertriton such as its lifetime and binding energy have not been understood, therefore, they have to be measured very precisely. Furthermore, an unprecedented Λnn bound state observed by the HypHI collaboration has to be studied in order to draw a conclusion whether or not such a bound state exists. These three-body hypernuclear states are studied by the heavy-ion beam data in the WASA-FRS experiment and by analysing J-PARC E07 nuclear emulsion data with machine learning.

Abstract:Recent high-resolution experiments at JLab give the energy spectra of the hypernuclei 7He<i, 9Li<i, 10Be12B<i. However, their spins and parities of the excited states have not been known experimentally. In the present paper, we make a systematical theoretical investigation for the p-shell hypernuclei, within the shell model based on the nucleonnucleon (NN) and hyperonnucleon interactions. The effective NN interaction takes the finite-range density-dependent Gogny force, and the hyperonnucleon interaction takes an empirical N interaction which includes the NN and NN coupling effects. The shell model with the Gogny force without parameters being refitted can reasonably describe both spectra and binding energies of the p-shell nuclei, which gives a confidence for the further calculations of hypernuclei. We compare our results with experimental data as well as various theoretical calculations, and explain the recent experimental hypernuclear spectra observed at JLab.

Abstract:Encouraged by the success of the first hypernuclear spectroscopy through the (e,e′K+) reaction (JLab E89-009), a new improved experiment with a newly developed High resolution Kaon Spectrometer (HKS) and a new configuration of the electron spectrometer is planned at the JLab Hall C. The introduction of the HKS will improve by a factor of two, the energy resolution which was limited by the previous kaon spectrometer. The hypernuclear yield and the signal to noise ratio will be also improved by a factor of 50 and 10, respectively.

Abstract:Since the 1st generation experiment, E89-009, which was successfully carried out as a pilot experiment of (e,e'K+) hypernuclear spectroscopy at JLab Hall C in 2000, precision hypernuclear spectroscopy by the (e,e'K+) reactions made considerable progress. It has evolved to the 2nd generation experiment, E01-011, in which a newly constructed high resolution kaon spectrometer (HKS) was installed and the "Tilt method" was adopted in order to suppress large electromagnetic background and to run with high luminosity. Preliminary high-resolution spectra of (7)(Lambda)He and (28)(Lambda)Al together with that of (12)(Lambda)B that achieved resolution better than 500 keV(FWHM) were obtained. The third generation experiment, E05-115, has completed data taking with an experimental setup combining a new splitter magnet, high resolution electron spectrometer (HES) and the HKS used in the 2nd generation experiment. The data were accumulated with targets of (7)Li, (9)Be, (10)B, (12)C and (52)Cr as well as with those of CH(2) and H(2)O for calibration. The analysis is under way with particular emphasis of determining precision absolute hypernuclear masses.In this article, hypernuclear spectroscopy program in the wide mass range at JLab Hall C that has undergone three generation is described.

Abstract:C. N. Yang: We have just heard three speakers describing to us various problems which arise in theoretical and experimental high-energy physics, and in the designs of high-energy accelerators. The problem of the aims, prospects, and the impact of the whole enterprise is a very complex subject. I shall confine myself to a few remarks concerning the historical aspect of the subject. High-energy physics is a natural continuation of the traditional efforts by physicists to study the structure of matter. By all standards of comparison, I think we are not exaggerating when we say that achievements in this line of research have been most spectacular in the past sixty years. At the turn of the century, physicists, as we recall, were just looking at the structure of atoms. Thirty years later, the subject of studies progressed to atomic nuclei, and today we are looking at subnuclear constituents. The increase in energy is equally impressive; in fact, perhaps even more so. We have progressed from a few electron volts to millions of electron volts to today's multibillion electron volts. Reviewing the progress of the experimental techniques that have made possible these investigations, one is deeply impressed by the power and the ingenuity that were brought to bear at each stage of this development. With the greatly awakened interest in science in all nations, with the rapid progress of technology, there seems to be little doubt that new experimental techniques will be developed to meet every new challenge encountered in this enterprise. The impact of these developments on technology, on human affairs, and on other sciences has been important beyond description.

Abstract:The BESIII detector on the BEPCII collider collected the world's largest dataset at the peaks of $J/\psi$, $\psi(3686)$ and $\psi(3770)$. The use of polarization and entanglement states in multidimensional angular distribution analysis can provide new probes to the production and decay characteristics of hyperon anti hyperon pairs. In a recent series of studies, significant transverse polarization in hyperon decay has been observed in $J/\psi$, $\psi(3686)$ decaying into the $\Lambda\bar\Lambda$, $\Sigma^+\bar\Sigma^{-}$, $\Xi^0\bar\Xi^0$ and $\Xi^-\bar\Xi^{+}$ final states. The weak decay parameters of hyperons and antihyperons are also independently determined for the first time. The most accurate testing for direct $CP$ violation has been achieved based on the measured weak decay parameters.

Abstract:Recent achievements in nuclear forces theory open new perspectives for the next decade of low energy nuclear physics, bringing together people from very different communities. Although many developments remain to be done, the possibility to directly use QCD to describe nuclear system is a major challenge that is within reach. In this introduction to the 2009 International Joliot-Curie School (EJC2009), new trends in the strong nuclear interaction are summarized starting from quarks and ending with finite or infinite nuclear systems. At different energy scales, selected new concepts and ideas have been discussed in a rather simple way. Recent advances in the theory of nuclear forces, thanks to chiral perturbation and effective field theories, have led to a new generation of strong nuclear interaction particularly suited to low energy nuclear physics. The interesting aspects of new interactions compared to conventional forces are underlined. Recent achievements in ab initio theories that directly start from the bare nucleon-nucleon interaction and their key role to understand the three-body force are illustrated. Finally, future perspectives for standard nuclear physics theories, namely Shell Model and Energy Density Functional, are discussed.

Abstract:In the past few years the field of hadron spectroscopy has seen renewed interest due to the pubblication, initially mostly from B-Factories, of evidences of states that do not match regular spectroscopy, but are rather candidates for bound states with additional quarks or gluons. A huge effort in understanding the nature of this new states and in building a new spectroscopy is ongoing. This report reviews the experimental and theoretical state of the art on heavy quarkonium exotic spectroscopy, with particular attention on the steps towards a global picture.

Abstract:We study the ground state properties of light hypernuclei theoretically using the relativistic mean-field theory with TM1 and NL-SH force parameters. It is found that these new parameters can satisfactorily reproduce the ground-state properties of the light hypernuclei even near the neutron drip-line. The parameter sets TM1 and NL-SH give a very similar description of hypernuclei. The properties of hypernuclei in baryon-hyperon systems are insensitive to the force parameters of effective nucleon-nucleon interactions. We also take into account the influence of pairing forces on the Lambda hyperon and find that it leads to an even-odd effect in light hypernuclei.

Abstract:Hyperon nonleptonic decays that change strangeness by two units, such as Ξ→Nπ and Ω−→nK−,Λπ−,Σ(*)π , are highly suppressed in the standard model. Only a few of them have been searched for to date, leading to experimental upper bounds that are many orders of magnitude above the expectations of the standard model. This leaves ample opportunity to look for indications of new physics in these processes. At the same time, most, but not all, ΔS=2 interactions beyond the standard model are severely constrained by kaon-mixing data. We present two scenarios where new physics satisfying the kaon-mixing constraints can enhance the hyperon decay rates to levels that can be probed in future searches by BESIII and LHCb and at the proposed Super Tau-Charm Factory. Abstract:Elucidating the role of strange baryons (hyperons) in neutron stars requires detailed knowledge of hyperon–nucleon interactions in the light (u,d,s) quark sector. The structure of the hyperons and their excitation spectra also directly impact, and are an input to, models of big-bang nucleosynthesis. The upcoming K-long Facility will provide a much-needed intense and clean neutral strange meson beam, from which hyperons can be produced at rates where hyperon structure, hyperon–nucleon interactions and higher-order interactions can be studied with a new level of accuracy and for hitherto unreachable measurements. The new facility has the potential to address long-standing questions surrounding the strange sector of the strong force and its relevance to the structure of atomic nuclei, neutron stars and the cosmos at large. Abstract:I will review recent progress in our understanding of the nuclear force. In the course of the 1990's, so-called high-precision, charge-dependent nucleon-nucleon potentials have been constructed which are, essentially, phenomenological models. These potentials are now commonly used as input for exact few-body calculations and microscopic nuclear many-body theory. I will critically analyses those models and point out their strenghts and weaknesses. Particular emphasis will be on charge dependence. Other recent research was conducted on a more basic level: understanding the nuclear force in terms of the fundamental theory of strong interactions, QCD. Predictions from this sector are typically qualitative in nature. Thus, the main problem of the current status in the field is that quantitative models for the nuclear force have a poor theoretical background, while theory based models yield poor results. The chief challenge for the new millenium is to overcome this discrepancy. Chiral effective field theory may be a suitable tool to solve the problem.
