Abstract:Silicon monoxide (SiO) is a promising anode material for thenext-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its higher capacity thangraphite and better cycle life than pure silicon. However, the issues ofvolume changes, low mass loading, and poor conductivity still exist. In thisstudy, an economic battery manufacturing technique is developed topromote the performance of commercial SiO/C-based batteries. A noveltriblock copolymer binder was synthesized and used to relieve the volumechanges and improve ion transportation. Copper nanowires were adopted inthe anode material to improve electrical conductivity. A high mass loadinganode with a laminated conductive structure was fabricated by spraying alayer upon layer. The synthesized SiO/C exhibits a high specific capacityretention of 606 mA h g-1after 200 cycles at a high areal mass loading of10.26 mg cm-2. Furthermore, under a current density of 1 C (1255 mA g-1),it delivers a reversible rate capacity of 620 mA h g-1. This novel design pavesa new way to fabricate high-performance SiO-based anodes for commercial LIB applications.
Phytic-Acid-Modified Copper Foil as a Current Collector for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Electrolytic copper foil is ideal for use in the anode current collectors of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of its abundant reserves, good electrical conductivity, and soft texture. However, electrolytic copper foil is prone to corrosion in electrolytes and weak bonding to the anode substance. Surface modification of copper foil is considered an effective method of improving the overall electrochemical performance of LIBs. In this study, a 5 nm thickness phytic acid (PA)-based film is constructed on electrolytic copper foil using a fast electrodeposition process (about 10 s). PA-treated copper foil (PA-Cu) displays an improved corrosion resistance in electrolytes because of a strong complexation between the PA and copper. It is found that PA-treated copper foil also bonds better with graphite particles compared with pristine copper foil. LIBs with PA-Cu foils as their current collectors exhibit enhanced cycling stability, improved capacity retention, and superior rate performance at both low and high current densities. Our study offers a novel avenue for the development of high-performance electrode current collector materials for LIBs.

Abstract:The current collector is a critical component of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, copper-coated polymer films (P@Cu) with through-hole arrays are developed lightweight and flexible current collectors. The through-hole arrays are created by laser drilling the polyimide film substrate. P@Cu composite current collectors are fabricated by electroless Cu deposition on polyimide films with through-hole arrays, which form three-dimensional conductive paths. As the anode current collector for LIBs, P@Cu exhibit a total electrode mass-specific capacity that is 54.58 % higher than that of the commercial Cu foil. Due to the polyimide substrate, the tensile deformation of P@Cu is 6.69 % higher than that of the commercial Cu foil. After 30,000 bending cycles, the conductivity of P@Cu is only reduced by 3.39 %, while the commercial Cu foil current collectors have broken by this point. The P@Cu composite foils with through-hole arrays are high-performance lightweight and flexible current collectors for LIBs.

Abstract:Large inactive component mass ratio and internal resistance are two critical challenges in further realizing high energy and power density lithium-ion batteries. Herein, lightweight copper coated polyimide (PI@Cu) current collectors with a high electrical conductivity (2.25 × 105 S cm−1) and low area density (1.99 mg cm−2) are fabricated via a facile electroless copper deposition method. Compared with the commercial Cu foil current collector, lithium titanate anodes equipped with PI@Cu current collectors decrease the inactive component mass ratio and improve the gravimetric capacity based on the whole mass of the electrode. Meanwhile, the rough surface morphology of deposited Cu layers reduces the electrode layer/current collector interfacial resistance, resulting in a lower internal resistance and better rate capability. PI@Cu composite films are promising alternatives to the traditional copper foil current collectors for high energy density and power density lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Tin-based materials have obtained much attention in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to high specific capacity. However, the large volume change and poor electroconductivity hinder their further practical application. Herein, a C18N12 (CN)-wired amorphous carbon coated pyrophosphate tin (SnP2O7@C) ultrafine nanoparticles composite (SnP2O7@C/CN) is prepared by solvothermal-calcination with phytic acid (PA) as phosphorus and carbon sources simultaneously. Ultrafine-nanocrystallization and dual-carbon doping enhances the pseudocapacitance of SnP2O7@C/CN and thus, exhibit good electrochemical performance and high lithium/sodium storage efficiency. As anode of LIBs, the SnP2O7@C/CN exhibits a superior reversible capacity of 557.3 mAh/g after 100 cycles at a current density of 0.2 A/g and a conspicuous cyclability of 352.3 mAh/g after 800 cycles at 1 A/g. For sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), the stable discharge capacity of SnP2O7@C/CN electrode is 91.5 mAh/g after 800 cycles at a high current density of 2 A/g. This strategy can increase active sites, provide large electrolyte/electrode contact area, and improve electroconductivity. Moreover, SnP2O7@C/CN electrode provides a buffer space for structural strains caused by volume changes during charging and discharging.

Abstract:The compatibility of current collectors with reactive Li is key to inducing stable Li cycling and prolonged cycle life of lean Li-metal batteries. Herein, a thin and uniform layer of Ni-P complex was built on the surface of a Cu current collector (NiP@Cu) via an efficient, controllable, and cost-effective electroless plating method. The thickness, morphology, composition, and roughness of the Ni-P deposition were successfully regulated. Lithiophilicity of the current collector was greatly improved by Ni-P deposition, which effectively reduced the Li nucleation overpotential and suppressed the Li dendrite growth. In addition, NiP@Cu promoted an inorganic LiF/Li3P-rich solid electrolyte interphase to facilitate interfacial charge transfer and eliminate excessive side reactions between Li and the electrolyte. As a result, the Coulombic efficiency of half-cells remained above 98.5% for more than 400 cycles at 0.5 mA/cm2 and 98.2% for more than 250 cycles at 1 mA/cm2. Full cells with NiP@Cu also showed superior performance compared to those with bare Cu. This work proposes a promising surface modification method to develop a stable, dendrite-free, and cost-effective anode current collector for high-energy-density lean Li-metal batteries.

Abstract:3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (3,4,9,10-PTCDA) is electrospun as carbon source onto the Cu foil surface, then carbonizes at high temperature to obtain an organic carbon membrane (2.8 μm) covered on Cu foil. The obtained organic carbonized Cu foil display larger electrolyte contact angle, and can effectively enhance the corrosion resistance of electrolyte. Moreover, this organic carbon layer can effectively increase the adhesion between graphite and Cu foil, reduce the interface impedance, and significantly improve the conductivity and lithium storage behaviors of graphite electrode. The initial charge capacity of organic carbonized Cu-graphite/Li battery is as high as 355.9 mAh g-1, which is higher than the pristine Cu-graphite/Li battery (300.9 mAh g-1). After 454 cycles, the charging capacity remains at 345.9 mAh g-1 with capacity retentions of 97.2%, which is also much larger than the battery based on pristine Cu foil (236.9 mAh g-1 with retentions of 78.7% after 300 cycles). After a carbon film formed on the surface of Cu foil, the conductivity, capacity, cycling and rate capabilities of both half battery based on Cu-graphite/Li electrode and full battery based on the organic carbonized Cu-graphite/LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 electrode are greatly improved, which provides novel ideas for the development of high performance collector in lithium ion batteries (LIBs).

Abstract:As an indispensable component of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the application of porous copper (Cu) foil current collector is an effective method to improve the performance and energy density of LIBs. In this work, a porous Cu (PCu) foil was fabricated by acid washing the Cu-Fe3O4 foil prepared by the electro-codeposition in a stirred CuSO4 solution containing the magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The effect of the stirring speed on the properties of PCu foils and the battery performance of PCu foil as current collectors were investigated. The surface roughness of the PCu foil increases, while its volume density decreases as the stirring speed rises. The volume density of PCu foil (6.63 g cm-3) prepared at 400 rpm (PCu400) is reduced by 22.4% than that of the commercial Cu foil (8.55 g cm-3). The specific capacity (241.2 mAh g-1) of the cell with PCu400 current collector is 31.3% higher than that of the cell with commercial Cu current collector (183.7 mAh g-1) after 300 charge-discharge cycles at 2 C. The electro-codeposition of porous Cu foil current collectors offers a promising method for high-performance lightweight LIBs.

Abstract:Rechargeable lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries hold great potential for next-generation high-performance energy storage systems because of their high theoretical specific energy, low materials cost, and environmental safety. One of the major obstacles for its commercialization is the rapid capacity fading due to polysulfide dissolution and uncontrolled redeposition. Various porous carbon structures have been used to improve the performance of Li–S batteries, as polysulfides could be trapped inside the carbon matrix. However, polysulfides still diffuse out for a prolonged time if there is no effective capping layer surrounding the carbon/sulfur particles. Here we explore the application of conducting polymer to minimize the diffusion of polysulfides out of the mesoporous carbon matrix by coating poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) onto mesoporous carbon/sulfur particles. After surface coating, coulomb efficiency of the sulfur electrode was improved from 93% to 97%, and capacity decay was reduced from 40%/100 cycles to 15%/100 cycles. Moreover, the discharge capacity with the polymer coating was ∼10% higher than the bare counterpart, with an initial discharge capacity of 1140 mAh/g and a stable discharge capacity of >600 mAh/g after 150 cycles at C/5 rate. We believe that this conductive polymer coating method represents an exciting direction for enhancing the device performance of Li–S batteries and can be applicable to other electrode materials in lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:Ceramic/polymer composite solid electrolytes are emerging as a good strategy to improve the safety and the power density of next-generation battery technologies. This battery technology is, however, limited by the high interfacial resistance across the ceramic/polymer interface at room temperature. Herein, an efficient strategy was proposed to lower the interfacial resistance via building a “bridge” between polymer phase and ceramic phase in the prepared composite solid electrolyte (CSE) and increase its electrochemical window. The prepared composite solid electrolyte possessed a high ionic conductivity of 3.1 × 10−3 S cm−1 at room temperature via forming an extra high-speed Li-ion pathway between poly(vinyl ethylene carbonate) (PVEC) polymer phase and ceramic phase (LLZTO) by the aid of the formed chemical bonds and hydrogen bonds. Lithium symmetrical batteries based on CSE exhibit a reduced charge voltage polarization and cycled almost 1000 h at 0.1 mA/cm2 without the occurrence of short circuits. This “bridge” strategy provides an effective way to resolve the problem of high interfacial resistance and interface compatibility.

So far, however, very little is known about the key process directly involved with the improvement of cell performance and stability. The present study examines how a conducting polymer can contribute to charge capacity enhancement, employing poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene‐sulfonate) coating on the lithium‐layered transition metal oxide cathode. The property of the electrode interface layer is studied on the basis of the local atomic environments. The conducting polymer not only hinders the formation of LiF, carbonates, and semicarbonates compounds but also renders the nature of the solid‐electrolyte interphase layer formed during electrochemical cycles. Furthermore, it inhibits the dissolution of the active material into the electrolyte and preserves the initial atomic states including the active material bulk. The coating enables good consistency in the local atomic environment with depth at the electrode interface, which in turn impedes the phase mismatch resulting from the surface reconstruction on the layered oxide electrode. This further mitigates the phase transformation of the active material, resulting in a lower voltage decay on charge–discharge.</p>

Abstract:A novel polymer is designed to serve as the conductive binder for high-capacity silicon anodes in lithium ion batteries (LIBs), aiming to address fast capacity fade and poor cycle life of silicon anodes caused by large volume change during repeated cycles. Abundant carboxyl groups in the polymer chain can effectively enhance the binding force to Si nanoparticles (NPs) and the n-type polyfluorene backbones of the polymer significantly promote the electronic conductivity under the reducing environment for anodes, dual-features of which can maintain electronic integrity during lithiation/delithiation cycles. Notably, the polymer can react with the polar groups on the surface of Si NPs to form strong chemical bonds, thus truly maintaining the electrode mechanical integrity and good electronic conductivity after repeated charge/discharge process. The as-assembled batteries based on the polymer without any conductive additive exhibit a high reversible capacity (2806mAhg−1 at 420mAg−1) and good cycle stability (85.2% retention of the initial capacity) after 100 cycles.

Abstract:Metallic copper is widely used as current collector (CC) for graphite anode of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high electrical conductivity and electrochemical stability. However, the large volume density of commercial copper foil (∼8.9 g·cm−3) limits the increase of energy density of battery. Here, copper-coated porous polyimide (Cu@PPI) was prepared by vacuum evaporation as collector for the graphite anode. The sandwich structure connects the copper metal on both sides of the collector with excellent electrical conductivity. Compared to commercial Cu foil, Cu@PPI has lighter mass (≤3.9 mg for disc of 12 mm diameter versus 9.9 mg of ∼10 µm Cu foil) and lower volume density (≤3.3 g·cm−3). In addition, the porous structure allows of better adhesion of reactive substances and electrochemical properties than pure Cu foils. It is estimated that the energy density of Cu@PPI should be much higher than that of Cu foil. This strategy should be applicable for other current collectors.
An All-in-one Free-Standing Single-Ion Conducting Semi-Solid Polymer Electrolyte for High-Performance Practical Li Metal Batteries

Abstract:Single-ion conducting polymer electrolytes, characterized by effective Li+ transport and dendrite mitigation, are emerging as promising candidates for the highly demanded lithium metal batteries. However, despite the promise, their current ionic conductivity and Li+ transference number fall short of application requirements. Herein, we have developed a free-standing single-ion conducting semi-solid polymer electrolyte (PBSIL), engineered through the synergistic interaction between anion acceptors and solvated ionic liquids. This innovative chemical synergy significantly enhances the complete dissociation of lithium salts while immobilizing anions, thus facilitating rapid Li+ transport. As a result, the PBSIL electrolyte exhibits enhanced ionic conductivity of 8.0×10-4 S cm-1, and an improved Li+ transference number of 0.75. These features effectively mitigate concentration polarization and dendrite growth, ensuring long-term cell stability. Moreover, Li|PBSIL|LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cells demonstrate an ultra-long cycle life of 1300 cycles, with a high discharge capacity of 183 mAh g−1 and excellent capacity retention of 75%. Additionally, PBSIL has been successfully integrated for the first time into the production of winding-processed semi-solid state cylindrical and Z-stacked pouch lithium metal batteries. Through the synergistic regulation of Li+ transport and anion immobilization, PBSIL provides an effective design strategy for free-standing semi-solid polymer electrolytes, showcasing superior electrochemical performance and contributing to the development and industrialization of long-cycling lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:Herein, a synthetic strategy for growing trimetallic zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) polyhedrons on copper foam (CF) and interweaving with copper nanowires (CNWs) is proposed. Subsequently, in situ annealing under N2 atmosphere leads to the formation of multi-doped CNWs/Cu0.39Zn0.14Co2.47O4-ZnO/CF (CNWs/CZCOZ/CF). The unique structural characteristics of CNWs/CZCOZ/CF allow it to be directly assembled as a working electrode, without additional conductive additives or binders. When it's used as the lithium-ion battery (LIB) anode, this electrode exhibits a significantly high capacity of 2305 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 after 500 cycles. More importantly, kinetic analysis on the basis of cyclic voltammograms (CVs) indicates that the pseudocapacitive effect is the primary contributor to the high lithium storage capacity and also accounts for the exceptionally high rate capacity of 713 mAh g-1 even if the current density is at a maximum of 10 A g-1. Moreover, the superior battery performance originates from their advantageous structural diversity and unique compositional features, including synergistic effects among polymetallic components and two highly conductive substrates (CNWs and CF), forming unhindered paths for fast charge transfer.

Abstract:The current collector typically plays a critical role in Li nucleation/growth and Li‐ion flux distribution. This work introduces a hybrid SiO2‐Cu2O lithiophilic film designed to coat a 3D copper foam current collector. This composite current collector facilitates dense deposition of Li metal while ensuring a stable interface for the anode by exhibiting high Li+ affinity and selectivity toward electrolyte composition. Lithium (Li) metal batteries have attracted considerable research attention due to their exceptionally high theoretical capacity. However, the commercialization of Li metal batteries faces challenges, primarily attributed to uncontrolled growth of Li dendrites, which raises safety concerns and lowers coulombic efficiency. To mitigate Li dendrites growth and attain dense Li deposition, the hybrid SiO2‐Cu2O lithiophilic film applied to a 3D copper foam current collector is developed to regulate the interfacial properties for achieving even and dense Li deposition. The SiO2‐Cu2O possesses strong Li+ trapping capability through strong lithiophilicity from Cu2O. Additionally, the SiO2‐Cu2O enables uniform ion diffusion through the domain‐limiting effect of the holes in the SiO2 layer, inducing an even and dense Li plating/stripping behavior at a large capacity. Furthermore, the SiO2 layer promotes the formation of an initial high inorganic content Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) through selective preferential binding with anion and solvent molecules. When the SiO2‐Cu2O@Li anode is coupled with a LiFePO4 (LFP) cathode, the resulting full cell exhibits superior cycling stability and rate performance. These results provide a facile approach to construct a lithiophilic current collector for practical Li metal anodes.

Abstract:Single-ion conducting polymers have been widely reported in the literature as solid polymer electrolytes, but their low ionic conductivity has limited industrial applications at ambient temperature. Here, we employed a perfluoroalkyl sulfonamide-based single-ion conducting polymer-lithiated poly(perfluoroalkylsulfonyl)imide (LiPFSI) to promote the migration of free Li-ions and diminish cell polarization in lithium-ion batteries. After blending with Al2O3 powder, the LiPFSI/Al2O3 composite was coated on a commercial polyethylene separator. Adding the high surface energy of Al2O3 particles and the exceptional ionic conductivity of LiPFSI resulted in a LiPFSI/Al2O3 composite-coated separator with excellent wettability and low impedance. A LiFePO4/Li half-cell with this separator showed a highly improved charge–discharge cyclability up to 130 mAh/g that maintained 98% retention of the original reversible capacity after 220 charge–discharge cycles at a high current rate of 2 C (1 C = 170 mAh/g). Even at a high rate of 5 C, the cell capacity could be maintained above 100 mAh/g. Herein, we present a simple and effective method to optimize the separator with the LiPFSI/Al2O3 composite and thus improve the high rate charge–discharge performance of Li-ion batteries.
