Abstract:An analytical study is presented for the thermophoretic motion of a circular cylindrical particle in a gaseous medium with a transversely imposed temperature gradient near a large plane wall parallel to its axis in the quasisteady limit of negligible Peclet and Reynolds numbers. The Knudsen number is assumed to be small so that the fluid flow is described by a continuum model with a temperature jump, a thermal slip, and a frictional slip at the particle surface. The presence of the confining wall causes two basic effects on the particle velocity: first, the local temperature gradient on the particle surface is altered by the wall, thereby speeding up or slowing down the particle; secondly, the wall enhance the viscous retardation of the moving particle. Through the use of cylindrical bipolar coordinates, the transport equations governing this problem are solved and the wall effects on the thermophoresis of the aerosol cylinder are computed for various cases. The presence of the plane wall can reduce or enhance the particle velocity, depending upon the relative thermal conductivity and surface properties of the particle, the relative particle-wall separation distance, and the direction of the applied temperature gradient. The direction of the thermophoretic motion of a cylindrical particle near a plane wall is different from that of the prescribed thermal gradient, except when it is oriented parallel or perpendicular to the wall. The effects of the plane wall on the thermophoresis of a cylinder are found to be much more significant than those for a sphere at the same separation.
Influence of Particulate Thermophoresis on Convection Heat and Mass Transfer in a Slip Flow of a Viscoelasticity-Based Micropolar Fluid

Abstract:We focus on the intriguing particulate thermophoresis characterized by multi-dependent Soret number in a shear flow of a viscoelasticity-based micropolar fluid (VMF) over a stretching sheet in the existence of the slip condition. The multi-dependent Soret number involving the temperature field and micro-particle size factors is introduced to analyze the critical role of the particulate thermophoresis on the temperature and concentration profiles of a VMF. Such procedure being significant for convection heat and mass transfer has never yet been considered in the transport system of such non-Newtonian fluids. Theoretically, we find the larger particles more susceptible to the actuation of temperature gradient. The local Sherwood number increases linearly with the bulk temperature difference, while the thickness of the concentration boundary layer are decreased. We also find that the flow relaxation and slip behavior can give rise to the obvious reduction of local Nusselt number and Sherwood number in different ways. Moreover, these two behaviors are found to be inherently divergent in varying the local skin friction. A power law expression can fit well the dependence of the local skin friction on the slip parameter. The practical routes of heat and mass transfer in the complex fluids will be implemented by tuning the various physical parameters presented in this paper. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Influence of concentration on thermophoresis of spherical aerosol particles within a Brinkman medium

Abstract:We are examining the thermophoretic movement of a uniform mixture of spherical aerosol particles, all with the same properties, as they are situated within a porous material. These particles can have various thermal conductivity and surface characteristics. This analysis focuses on situations where the P{'e}clet and Reynolds numbers are small. The influence of particle interactions is carefully considered by using a unit cell model, a well-established method known for its accurate predictions in the context of sedimentation for monodisperse suspensions of spherical particles. The porous medium is represented as a Brinkman fluid characterized by a Darcy permeability, which can be determined directly from experimental observations. This medium is considered to be uniform and isotropic, and the solid matrix is in thermal equilibrium with the fluid flowing through the voids of the medium. The Knudsen number is assumed to be low, enabling the description of fluid flow through the porous medium using a continuum model that includes temperature jump, thermal creep, frictional slip, and thermal stress slip at the aerosol particle's surface. The conservation equations for energy and momentum are individually tackled within each cell. In this model, each cell represents a spherical particle enclosed by a concentric shell of surrounding fluid. The thermophoretic particle migration velocity is determined across different cases. We derive analytical expressions for this average particle velocity, expressing it in terms of the particle volume fraction. It is observed that different cell models yield somewhat varied results for particle velocity. Generally, with a fixed permeability parameter characterizing the porous medium, an increase in the thermal stress slip coefficient tends to decrease the normalized thermophoretic velocity across the different cell models. The results are in good agreement with the available data as documented in the existing literature. Additionally, a parallel examination of aerosol sphere sedimentation is provided.

Diffusiophoresis of A Colloidal Cylinder in an Electrolyte Solution Near A Plane Wall

Abstract:The diffusiophoretic motion of a circular cylindrical particle in an electrolyte solution prescribed with a transverse concentration gradient, which is arbitrarily oriented with respect to a plane wall parallel to its axis, is analyzed at the quasi-steady state. The thickness of the electric double layers adjacent to the particle and wall surfaces is taken to be small but finite, and the relaxation effect of their diffuse ions is allowed. Through the use of cylindrical bipolar coordinates, the equations of conservation governing this problem are solved, and the translational and angular velocities of the confined cylinder are computed for various cases. The influences of the confining wall and double-layer polarization on the diffusiophoretic mobility of the particle are found to be significant and complicated. The proximity of the plane wall can enhance or reduce the diffusiophoretic velocity and even reverse its direction, because the wall effect of hydrodynamic resistance on the particle is in the competition with that of electrochemical enhancement or retardation, and the wall effect on the chemiphoresis of the particle is in the competition with that on the induced electrophoresis. The direction of the diffusiophoretic motion of a particle near a plane wall is different from that of the prescribed concentration gradient, except when it is oriented parallel or perpendicular to the wall. The effects of the plane wall on the diffusiophoresis of a cylindrical particle are more significant than those of a spherical one at the same separation because of more effective particle–wall interaction surfaces.

Abstract:Thermophoresis of charged colloids in aqueous media has wide applications in biology. Most existing studies of thermophoresis focused on spherical particles, but biological compounds are usually non-spherical. The present paper reports a numerical analysis of the thermophoresis of a charged spheroidal colloid in aqueous media. The model accounts for the strongly coupled temperature field, the flow field, the electric potential field, and the ion concentration field. Numerical simulations revealed that prolate spheroids move faster than spherical particles, and oblate spheroids move slower than spherical particles. For the arbitrary electric double layer (EDL) thickness, the thermodiffusion coefficient of prolate (oblate) spheroids increases (decreases) with the increasing particle’s dimension ratio between the major and minor semiaxes. For the extremely thin EDL case, the hydrodynamic effect is significant, and the thermodiffusion coefficient for prolate (oblate) spheroids converges to a fixed value with the increasing particle’s dimension ratio. For the extremely thick EDL case, the particle curvature’s effect also becomes important, and the increasing (decreasing) rate of thermodiffusion coefficient for prolate (oblate) spheroids is reduced slightly.

Abstract:We study hydrodynamic slowing-down of a particle moving in a temperature gradient perpendicular to a wall. At distances much smaller than the particle radius, $h\ll a$, lubrication approximation leads to the reduced velocity $u/u_{0}=3\frac{h}{a}\ln \frac{a}{h}$, with respect to the bulk value $u_{0}$. With Brenner's result for confined diffusion, we find that the trapping efficiency, or effective Soret coefficient, increases logarithmically as the particle gets very close to the wall. This provides a quantitative explanation for the recently observed enhancement of thermophoretic trapping at short distances. Our discussion of parallel and perpendicular thermophoresis in a capillary, reveals a very a good agreement with five recent experiments on charged polystyrene particles.

Abstract:As a key mechanism of submicron particle capture in wet deposition and wet scrubbing processes, thermophoresis is influenced by the flow and temperature fields. Three-dimensional direct numerical simulations were conducted to quantify the characteristics of the flow and temperature fields around a droplet at three droplet Reynolds numbers (Re) that correspond to three typical boundary-layer-separation flows (steady axisymmetric, steady plane-symmetric, and unsteady plane-symmetric flows). The thermophoretic motion of submicron particles was simulated in these cases. Numerical results show that the motion of submicron particles around the droplet and the deposition distribution exhibit different characteristics under three typical flow forms. The motion patterns of particles are dependent on their initial positions in the upstream and flow forms. The patterns of particle motion and deposition are diversified as Re increases. The particle motion pattern, initial position of captured particles, and capture efficiency change periodically, especially during periodic vortex shedding. The key effects of flow forms on particle motion are the shape and stability of the wake behind the droplet. The drag force of fluid and the thermophoretic force in the wake contribute jointly to the deposition of submicron particles after the boundary-layer separation around a droplet.

Abstract:A droplet under a thermal gradient is known to migrate in a preferential direction, as governed by the variation of its interfacial tension with temperature. Contradicting the outcome of reported asymptotic analysis, here we show that the calculation of the droplet migration by considering the variation of interfacial tension with the imposed thermal field alone may be fundamentally incorrect. This error is attributed to the dynamically evolving interfacial temperature field due to a two-way coupling between the thermal field and the flow field, mediated by the droplet deformation and thermal diffusion. By directly capturing an inherent nonlinear coupling between the thermal field and the flow field using explicit interface tracking in a three-dimensional space, our boundary integral based analysis reveals that a linearly decreasing temperature profile imposed along the direction of a plane Poiseuille flow enhances the migration speed of the droplet in both the axial and cross-stream directions. This is in sharp contrast to a prediction of decelerated motion of the droplet under the same imposed thermal field, as obtained from asymptotic theory. We attribute this discrepancy to an alteration of the surface tension mediated interfacial stress due to the locally evolving temperature field, and a consequent concomitant alteration in the interfacial viscous stress to realize a tangential force balance at the interface. From scaling arguments, we show that the resulting change in the viscous drag force may occur over an order of magnitude, disrupting the outcome as compared to that obtained from asymptotic analysis. These results are likely to bear significant implications in controllable separation and sorting of deformable entities in confined fluidic media.
Thermophoretic motion of a charged single colloidal particle

Abstract:We calculate the thermophoretic drift of a charged single colloidal particle with hydrodynamically slipping surface immersed in an electrolyte solution in response to a small temperature gradient. Here, we rely on a linearized hydrodynamic approach for the fluid flow and the motion of the electrolyte ions while keeping the full nonlinearity of the Poisson-Boltzmann equation of the unperturbed system to account for possible large surface charging. The partial differential equations are transformed into a coupled set of ordinary differential equations in linear response. Numerical solutions are elaborated for parameter regimes of small and large Debye shielding and different hydrodynamic boundary conditions encoded in a varying slip length. Our results are in good agreement with predictions from recent theoretical work and successfully describe experimental observations on thermophoresis of DNA. We also compare our numerical results with experimental data on polystyrene beads.

Creeping thermocapillary motion of a Newtonian droplet suspended in a viscoelastic fluid

Abstract:In this work we consider theoretically the problem of a Newtonian droplet moving in an otherwise quiescent infinite viscoelastic fluid under the influence of an externally applied temperature gradient. The outer fluid is modelled by the Oldroyd-B equation, and the problem is solved for small Weissenberg and Capillary numbers in terms of a double perturbation expansion. We assume microgravity conditions and neglect the convective transport of energy and momentum. We derive expressions for the droplet migration speed and its shape in terms of the properties of both fluids. In the absence of shape deformation, the droplet speed decreases monotonically for sufficiently viscous inner fluids, while for fluids with a smaller inner-to-outer viscosity ratio, the droplet speed first increases and then decreases as a function of the Weissenberg number. For small but finite values of the Capillary number, the droplet speed behaves monotonically as a function of the applied temperature gradient for a fixed ratio of the Capillary and Weissenberg numbers. We demonstrate that this behaviour is related to the polymeric stresses deforming the droplet in the direction of its migration, while the associated changes in its speed are Newtonian in nature, being related to a change in the droplet's hydrodynamic resistance and its internal temperature distribution. When compared to the results of numerical simulations, our theory exhibits a good predictive power for sufficiently small values of the Capillary and Weissenberg numbers.

Abstract:We analyze the low-Reynolds-number translation of a sphere towards or away from a rigid plane in an Oldroyd-B fluid under two scenarios: prescribing the sphere's translational velocity, and prescribing the force on the sphere. Leveraging the lubrication approximation and a perturbation expansion in powers of the Deborah number, we develop a comprehensive theoretical analysis that yields analytical approximations for velocity fields, pressures, and forces acting on the sphere. Our framework aids in understanding temporal microstructural changes as the particle-wall gap evolves over time. In particular, we show that alterations in the polymer conformation tensor in response to geometric changes induce additional forces on the sphere. For cases with prescribed velocity, we present a theoretical approach for calculating resistive forces at any order in the Deborah number and utilize a reciprocal theorem to obtain higher-order corrections based on velocity fields in the previous orders. When the sphere translates with a constant velocity, the fluid viscoelasticity decreases the resistive force at the first order. However, at the second-order correction, the direction of the sphere's movement determines whether viscoelasticity increases or decreases the resistive force. For cases with prescribed force, we show that understanding the influence of viscoelasticity on the sphere's translational velocity necessitates a more intricate analysis even at low Deborah numbers. Specifically, we introduce an ansatz for constant force scenarios, and we derive solution forms for general prescribed forces using the method of multiple scales. Steering a thermally activated micromotor with a nearby isothermal wall

Abstract:Selective heating of a microparticle surface had been observed to cause its autonomous movement in a fluid medium due to self-generated temperature gradients. In this work, we theoretically investigate the response of such an auto-thermophoretic particle near a planar wall which is held isothermal. We derive an exact solution of the energy equation and employ the Reynolds reciprocal theorem to obtain the translational and rotational swimming velocities in the creeping flow limit. Subsequently, we analyse the trajectories of the micromotor for different thermo-physical and configurational parameters. Results show that the micromotor trajectories can be switched either from wall-bound sliding or stationary state to escape from the near-wall zone by suitably choosing the particle and the surrounding fluid pair having selective thermal conductivity contrasts. Further, we discuss the dependency of this swimming-state transition on the launching orientation and the coverage of the metallic cap. Our results reveal that the scenario addressed here holds several exclusive distinguishing features from the otherwise extensively studied self-diffusiophoresis phenomenon near an inert wall, despite obvious analogies in the respective constitutive laws relating the fluxes with the gradients of the concerned forcing parameters. The most contrasting locomotion behaviour here turns out to be the ability of a self-thermophoretic micromotor to migrate towards the wall with large heated cap even if it is initially directed away from the wall. Besides, during the stationary state of swimming, the cold portion on the micromotor surface faces away from the wall, under all conditions. Such unique aspects of locomotion hold the potential of being harnessed in practice towards achieving intricate control over autonomous motion of microparticles in thermally-regulated fluidic environments.

Abstract:The migration and deposition processes of fine particles under the influence of temperature gradients and fluid flow are widely prevalent. Investigating the mechanisms of particle interactions in these processes contributes to the development of efficient dust removal techniques. In this work, experimental and numerical studies of particle motion in temperature gradient fields are conducted. The research encompasses both qualitative and quantitative analyses of particle motion influenced by thermophoresis and particle diameter. Qualitative analysis reveals that the motion characteristics of particles are jointly determined by gravity, drag force, and thermophoretic force, and the diameter range that exhibiting a notable influence of the thermophoretic force is 20–30 μm. Quantitative analysis shows that the manifestations of deposition and diffusion become more evident with an increasing temperature gradient. For instance, in comparison to the working condition with Δ T = 0 K and d p = 20 μm, the deposition mass increases by approximately 23% when Δ T = -15 K; conversely, it diminishes by about 11% when Δ T = 15 K. Additionally, the Discrete Phase Model (DPM) is employed to simulate the motion of gas-solid flow. This study presents a novel visualization system to observe particle motion in gas-solid systems to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the thermophoretic effect and establish a robust theoretical foundation for thermophoretic dust removal technology.

Abstract:This article focuses on the effects of Brownian motion and thermophoresis convection in the stagnation point flow of a Maxwell upper-convected fluid over a non-Darcian porous surface with slip conditions and a magnetic inclination effect. The Maxwell dissipative fluid accounts for Joule heating due to an imposed magnetic field and porous medium resistance. At the same time, the Cattaneo-Christov heat flux model represents thermal relaxation in contrast to the conventional Fourier law. The resulting nonlinear partial differential equations are transformed into ordinary differential equations (ODEs) using similarity variables. The analysis revealed the influence of dimensionless numbers, including Deborah, Eckert, Prandtl, chemical reaction, thermal relaxation, inclination and slip parameters. The findings were presented using graphs and tables. An increase in the thermophoresis parameter notably led to higher concentration and temperature profiles. In contrast, increasing Brownian motion (Nb) decreased the solutal boundary layer thickness but enhanced the thermal boundary layer.

Abstract:In many energy and combustion applications,particles experience large temperature gradients,which can affect the coagulation process due to thermophoresis.This study presents a rigorous theory of thermophoretically modified Brownian coagulation in the entire particle size regime.The theoretical derivations are based on the kinetic theory for the free-molecular regime and the harmonic mean method for the transition regime.The coagulation kernels in different size regimes can be expressed as the basic Brownian coagulation kernel times an enhancement factor.The enhancement factor represents the coagulation rate enhancement induced by thermophoresis and is a function of specific dimensionless numbers.Based on the enhancement factor,the thermophoretic enhancement effects on particle coag-ulation are further analyzed under a wide range of gas and particle conditions.The results show that thermophoretic enhancement effects are ignorable in the free-molecular regime,but need to be consid-ered in the continuum regime and the transition regime.In addition,the enhancement effects increase significantly with increase of gas temperature and temperature gradient while decrease with increase of gas pressure.The present study can improve understanding of thermophoretic effects on Brownian coag-ulation in the entire size regime and provide a useful tool to calculate the coagulation rates in presence of thermophoresis.

Abstract:<p>Aerosol particles suspended in a diluted gas with non-uniform temperature distribution are expected to experience a thermophoretic force. In theoretical treatment of thermophoresis, it is usually assumed that the particle temperature is equal to the surrounding gas temperature. However, this might not always be the case. In some particular applications, the particle temperature can significantly differ from the gas temperature. In the present paper, we theoretically investigate the effect of the particle temperature on the thermophoresis of nanoparticles in the free molecule regime. Theoretical formulas for the thermophoretic force and thermophoretic velocity are obtained based on the gas kinetic theory. As examples, a spherical Ag nanoparticle suspended in a dilute He gas is considered, and the Rudyak–Krasnolutski potential is employed to model the gas–particle interaction. It is found that the influence of the particle temperature on the thermophoresis of nanoparticles can be significant. With increasing particle size, the error due to the equal gas–particle temperature assumption can be neglected.</p>

Numerical Heat Transfer Part A Applications

Abstract:Non-Newtonian nanofluids are attracting the attention of researchers and academics due to the high heat transmission rates that they possess. To improve thermal devices and exchangers, the researchers come up with innovative and expense-effective methods. One of the advanced technological approaches that can be utilized to enhance the thermal performance of devices is the utilization of nanofluids. This non- Newtonian nanofluid possesses the advanced properties of increasing heat transfer and destroying harmful bacteria. For this purpose, the present theoretical work is to explore the heat and thermophoretic particle deposition analysis on the tangent hyperbolic nanofluid flow over the rotating porous disk with presence of non-Fourier heat flux model and nanoparticle aggregation effect. Darcy-Forchheimer fluid model is adopted to develop the fluid flow system. Furthermore, the nanofluid's viscosity and thermal conductivity are expressed through advanced modeling, employing the modified Krieger-Dougherty model for viscosity and the Maxwell-Bruggeman model for thermal conductivity. The nanoparticles and base fluid involved in this context are Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and Water/carboxyl-methyl cellulose (CMC) respectively. The mathematical representation of the fluid flow and energy propagation involves a system of coupled partial differential equations (PDEs). The system of partial differential equations (PDEs) is transformed into non-dimensional ordinary differential equations (ODEs), which are then solved both analytically and numerically using the Homotopy Analysis Method(HAM) and Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg (RKF) method along with shooting technique. Exploring the graphical representation reveals a comprehensive analysis of key factors influencing velocity, temperature, and concentration. Through innovative visualization, these parameters take center stage, providing insights into their intricate interplay and dynamic relationships. The heat transfer rate is enhanced 0.24% and 1.4% by rising the values of thermal relaxation parameter and Weissenberg number. Also, the mass transfer rate is accelerated 0.8% and 0.14% due to enhancing the values of thermophoretic coefficient and thermophoresis parameter.

Abstract:In this work, the thermocapillary migration of liquid bridges and air bubbles between parallel plates is studied. The factors influencing the thermocapillary migration are discussed, especially the magnitudes of the thermal gradient, the liquid or gas volume and the tilt angle of the parallel plates against gravity. The experimental trends are explained based on scaling models. It is found that a critical tilt angle exists at which the thermocapillary migration of liquid bridges is suspended. A simple two-dimensional theoretical model for the migration of liquid bridges is formulated. The model is able to predict the critical tilt angles in an approximate manner. An application perspective of this work lies in tribological systems in which liquid lubricant is replenished using applied thermal gradients.
