Abstract:The diffusiophoretic motion of a circular cylindrical particle in an electrolyte solution prescribed with a transverse concentration gradient, which is arbitrarily oriented with respect to a plane wall parallel to its axis, is analyzed at the quasi-steady state. The thickness of the electric double layers adjacent to the particle and wall surfaces is taken to be small but finite, and the relaxation effect of their diffuse ions is allowed. Through the use of cylindrical bipolar coordinates, the equations of conservation governing this problem are solved, and the translational and angular velocities of the confined cylinder are computed for various cases. The influences of the confining wall and double-layer polarization on the diffusiophoretic mobility of the particle are found to be significant and complicated. The proximity of the plane wall can enhance or reduce the diffusiophoretic velocity and even reverse its direction, because the wall effect of hydrodynamic resistance on the particle is in the competition with that of electrochemical enhancement or retardation, and the wall effect on the chemiphoresis of the particle is in the competition with that on the induced electrophoresis. The direction of the diffusiophoretic motion of a particle near a plane wall is different from that of the prescribed concentration gradient, except when it is oriented parallel or perpendicular to the wall. The effects of the plane wall on the diffusiophoresis of a cylindrical particle are more significant than those of a spherical one at the same separation because of more effective particle–wall interaction surfaces.
Diffusiophoretically induced interactions between chemically active and inert particles

Abstract:In the presence of a chemically active particle, a nearby chemically inert particle can respond to a concentration gradient and move by diffusiophoresis. The nature of the motion is studied for two cases: first, a fixed reactive sphere and a moving inert sphere, and second, freely moving reactive and inert spheres. The continuum reaction-diffusion and Stokes equations are solved analytically for these systems and microscopic simulations of the dynamics are carried out. Although the relative velocities of the spheres are very similar in the two systems, the local and global structures of streamlines and the flow velocity fields are found to be quite different. For freely moving spheres, when the two spheres approach each other the flow generated by the inert sphere through diffu- siophoresis drags the reactive sphere towards it. This leads to a self-assembled dimer motor that is able to propel itself in solution. The fluid flow field at the moment of dimer formation changes direction. The ratio of sphere sizes in the dimer influences the characteristics of the flow fields, and this feature suggests that active self-assembly of spherical colloidal particles may be manipulated by sphere-size changes in such reactive systems.

Abstract:A migration of charged particles relative to a solvent, caused by a gradient of salt concentration and termed a diffusiophoresis, is of much interest being exploited in many fields. Existing theories deal with diffusiophoresis of passive inert particles. In this paper, we extend prior models by focusing on a particle, which is both passive and catalytic, by postulating an uniform ion release over its surface. We derive an expression for a particle velocity depending on a dimensionless ion flux (Damkohler number Da) and show that a charged region is formed at distances of the order of the particle size, provided the diffusion coefficients of anions and cations are unequal. When Da becomes large enough, the contribution of this (outer) region to the particle velocity dominates. In this case the speed of catalytic passive particles augments linearly with Da and is inversely proportional to the square of electrolyte concentration. As a result, they always migrate towards a high concentration region and in dilute solutions become much faster than inert (non-catalytic) ones.

Abstract:Diffusiophoresis of nanoparticles is studied based on a modified electrokinetic model accounting the electrostatic correlation of finite sized ions and their non-electrostatic steric interactions. Hydrated ions are modeled as charged hard spheres suspended in the medium, which creates a volume exclusion due to ion–ion steric interactions and the medium viscosity to vary with the ionic volume fraction. The surface charge of the particle is considered to depend on the pH and concentration of electrolyte. We have adopted the Carnahan–Starling equation of state to model the ion steric interactions. The electrostatic correlation is incorporated by minimizing the free energy, which leads to a fourth-order modified Poisson equation for the electric field with the correlation length depending on the bulk ionic concentration, surface charge, and valence of the counterions. Due to the consideration of the ion–ion correlation, the effective screening length of the surface charge expands as the ionic concentration as well as valence of counterions is increased. The counterion saturation created by the ion steric interaction attenuates the screening of the surface charge. In addition, the ion steric interaction augments the diffusion field. Thus, the modified electrokinetic model shows a significant deviation from the standard Poisson–Nernst–Planck model. Governing equations in their full form are solved numerically through a control volume approach. A simplified model based on a linear perturbation analysis is also developed. We have considered multivalent electrolytes and demonstrated the overscreening of the surface charge and an oscillation in the charge density distribution. Through this study, we have elucidated the impact of several non-linear electrostatic phenomenon such as charge regulation, ion steric interactions, and ion–ion correlations, which has not been addressed in the context of diffusiophoresis.

Abstract:Diffusiophoresis, mediated by an imposed ionic concentration gradient, is a useful technique in directed migration of colloids. Theoretical studies on diffusiophoresis in a polymer hydrogel medium are rather limited owing to the presence of nonlinear terms in the fluid transport equations. The hydrogel creates a hydrodynamic interaction and short-range steric interaction to the dispersing particle and macromolecules. The volume exclusion due to a finite ion size consideration is important in the context of a highly charged particle. In this study, we consider the finite ion size effects on diffusiophoresis of a charged particle with ζ≥1 in a hydrogel medium. The modified ion transport equations coupled with the Brinkman equation for fluid flow and the Poisson equation for electric field are solved numerically in a coupled manner through a control volume approach. Our results based on the Brinkman model incorporating only the hydrodynamic interactions deviate from the existing experimental results. A close comparison with this experimental data is established when the computed mobility is modified to incorporate the short-range steric factor. We have considered the impact of the hindered diffusivity of ions in the gel medium. Our results show that the modification in the ionic diffusivity is significant for low porosity and high charge density situations. The impact of the finite ion size effect is found to be significant when the bulk ionic concentration is large enough to create an electric double layer thinner than the particle size. We have analyzed the size dependency of the mobility in the gel medium. A simplified expression for the mobility in a hydrogel medium is proposed.

Abstract:Diffusiophoresis is the spontaneous motion of particles under gradients of solutes. In electrolyte-driven diffusiophoresis, the zeta potential of the particles is an important surface property that characterizes diffusiophoretic mobility. However, the zeta potential is not a fixed material property and colloidal surfaces often show varying potentials depending on the physical chemistry of the surrounding fluid, e.g., solute type, ionic strength, and pH. In this article, we study experimentally and theoretically pH-dependent diffusiophoresis of polystyrene particles using a dead-end pore geometry. In particular, the influence of the isoelectric point (pI) on diffusiophoresis is demonstrated in the absence and presence of wall diffusioosmosis. Throughout the paper, we show with experiments and model calculations how the pH-dependent diffusiophoresis and diffusioosmosis influence the particle motion in dead-end pore configurations, including changes that occur when there is a sign change in the zeta potential near the pI.

Abstract:The present article deals with the theoretical development of the electrophoresis of core-shell structured soft particles in which the inner rigid core is decorated with a fluid and ion-permeable polymeric shell layer. Note that such a particle resembles several biocolloids (e.g., bacteria, virus, humic acid), functionalized nanoparticles, and environmental entities, to name a few. For such a structured particle, the conventional -potential concept loses its meaning, and an extensive theory is required to analyze the electrohydrodynamics of the particle considering the penetration of ionized liquid across the shell layer. Note that the dielectric permittivity of the shell layer is often lower than that of the bulk aqueous medium, which induces the ion partitioning effect. Besides, in several practical situations, the hydrodynamic slipping may occur along the slipping plane. In addition, the slipping plane may not always be located along the surface of the inner core due to grafting of a polymeric shell layer along its surface, and thus, it may be assumed to be located somewhere within the surface polymeric layer. The slipping plane separates two regions with different Brinkman parameters. The region outside the slipping plane the Brinkmann screening length takes a finite value, which allows fluid flow across this region. In the region inside the slipping plane, the Brinkman parameter may practically be equal to infinity, but electrolyte ions still can penetrate this region. Considering all the physical aspects indicated above, we have proposed a simple model to study the electrophoresis of soft particles within the flat-plate regime. Based on the weak charge limit, we adopt the Debye-Hückel linearization to simplify the governing equations, and the explicit form of electrophoretic mobility is derived. Several closed-form analytic expressions are further deduced from the general mobility expressions valid under various limiting situations. We have illustrated our findings graphically to highlight the impact of pertinent parameters on the electrophoretic mobility of such a particle. In addition, we have further provided an estimate of the parametric range in which the particle may attain a zero mobility. Overall, the analytical results presented in this study will be helpful to the experimentalists to analyze their findings.

Abstract:The boundary effect on the electrophoresis of a soft spherical particle, which comprises a rigid core and a porous layer, along the axis of a cylindrical pore is analyzed under the conditions of low surface potential and weak applied electric field. The porous layer of the particle is of charge-regulated nature where the distribution of fixed charge depends on the degree of dissociation/association reaction of the ionizable function groups contained in the porous layer. The pore might be charged, implying that the effect of electroosmotic flow can play a role. The influences of the nature of the porous layer of a particle, the thickness of the double layer, the pH of the bulk liquid, and the relative size of a pore on the electrophoretic behavior of the particle are investigated. Several unexpected and interesting results are obtained. For instance, if the pH value of the bulk liquid or the thickness of the membrane layer takes a medium large value, the electrophoretic mobility of the particle has a local maximum as the thickness of the double layer varies.

Abstract:The present article deals with the electrohydrodynamic motion of diffuse porous particles governed by an applied DC electric field. The spatial distribution of monomers as well as the charge distribution across the particle are considered to follow sigmoidal distribution involving decay length. Such a parameter measures the degree of inhomogeneity of the monomer distribution across the particle. The diffuse porous particles resemble several colloidal entities which are often seen in the environment as well as in biological and pharmaceutical industries. Considering the impact of bulk pH and ion steric effects, we modelled the electrohydrodynamics of such porous particulates based on the modified Boltzmann distribution for the spatial distribution of electrolyte ions and the Poisson equation for electric potential as well as the conservation of mass and momentum principles. We adopt regular perturbation analysis with weak field assumption and the perturbed equations are solved numerically to calculate the electrophoretic mobility and neutralization fraction of the particle charge during its motion as well as fluid collection efficiency. We further deduced the closed form relation between the drag force experienced by the charged porous particle and the fluid collection efficiency. In addition to the numerical results, we further derived the closed form analytical results for all the intrinsic parameters indicated above derived within the Debye–Hückel electrostatic framework and homogeneous distribution of monomers within the particle for which the decay length vanishes. The deduced mathematical results as indicated above will be useful to analyze several electrostatic and hydrodynamic features of a wide class of porous particulate and environmental entities.

Abstract:The sedimentation of a soft particle composed of an uncharged hard sphere core and a charged porous surface layer inside a concentric charged spherical cavity full of a symmetric electrolyte solution is analyzed in a quasi-steady state. By using a regular perturbation method with small fixed charge densities of the soft sphere and cavity wall, a set of linearized electrokinetic equations relevant to the fluid velocity field, electrical potential profile, and ionic electrochemical potential energy distributions are solved. A closed-form formula for the sedimentation velocity of the soft sphere is obtained as a function of the ratios of core-to-particle radii, particle-to-cavity radii, particle radius-to-Debye screening length, and particle radius-to-porous layer permeation length. The existence of the surface charge on the cavity wall increases the settling velocity of the charged soft sphere, principally because of the electroosmotic enhancement of fluid recirculation within the cavity induced by the sedimentation potential gradient. When the porous layer space charge and cavity wall surface charge have the same sign, the particle velocity is generally enhanced by the presence of the cavity. When these fixed charges have opposite signs, the particle velocity will be enhanced/reduced by the presence of the cavity if the wall surface charge density is sufficiently large/small relative to the porous layer space charge density in magnitude. The effect of the wall surface charge on the sedimentation of the soft sphere increases with decreases in the ratios of core-to-particle radii, particle-to-cavity radii, and particle radius-to-porous layer permeation length but is not a monotonic function of the ratio of particle radius-to-Debye length.

Abstract:Diffusiophoresis, the movement of particles under a solute concentration gradient, has practical implications in a number of applications, such as particle sorting, focusing, and sensing. For diffusiophoresis in an electrolyte solution, the particle velocity is described by the electrolyte relative concentration gradient and the diffusiophoretic mobility of the particle. The electrolyte concentration, which typically varies throughout the system in space and time, can also influence the zeta potential of particles in space and time. This variation affects the diffusiophoretic behavior, especially when the zeta potential is highly dependent on the electrolyte concentration. In this work, we show that adsorbing a single bilayer (or 4 bilayers) of a polyelectrolyte pair (PDADMAC/PSS) on the surface of microparticles resulted in effectively constant zeta potential values with respect to salt concentration throughout the experimental range of salt concentrations. This allowed a constant potential model for diffusiophoretic transport to describe the experimental observations, which was not the case for uncoated particles in the same electrolyte system. This work highlights the use of simple polyelectrolyte pairs to tune the zeta potential and maintain constant values for precise control of diffusiophoretic transport.

Abstract:A unit cell model is employed to analyze the electrophoresis and electric conduction in a concentrated suspension of spherical charged soft particles (each is a hard core coated with a porous polyelectrolyte layer) in a salt-free medium. The linearized Poisson–Boltzmann equation applicable to a unit cell is solved for the equilibrium electrostatic potential distribution in the liquid solution containing the counterions only surrounding a soft particle. The counterionic continuity equation and modified Stokes/Brinkman equations are solved for the ionic electrochemical potential energy and fluid velocity distributions, respectively. Closed-form formulas for the electrophoretic mobility of the soft particles and effective electric conductivity of the suspension are derived, and the effect of particle interactions on these transport characteristics is interesting and significant. Same as the case in a suspension containing added electrolytes under the Debye–Hückel approximation, the scaled electrophoretic mobility in a salt-free suspension is an increasing function of the fixed charge density of the soft particles and decreases with increases in the core-to-particle radius ratio, ratio of the particle radius to the permeation length in the porous layer, and particle volume fraction, keeping the other parameters unchanged. The normalized effective electric conductivity of the salt-free suspension also increases with an increase in the fixed charge density and with a decrease in the core-to-particle radius ratio, but is not a monotonic function of the particle volume fraction.

Abstract:We consider phoretic self-propulsion of a chemically active colloid where solute is produced on the colloid surface (with a spatially varying rate) and consumed in the bulk solution (or vice versa). Assuming first-order kinetics, the dimensionless transport problem is governed by the surface Damköhler number S and the bulk Damköhler number B . The dimensionless colloid velocity U , normalized by a self-phoretic scale, is a nonlinear function of these two parameters. In the limit of small S , the solute flux is effectively prescribed by the surface activity distribution, resulting in an explicit expression for U that is proportional to S . In the limit of large B , the deviations of solute concentration from the equilibrium value are restricted to a narrow layer about the active portion of the colloid boundary. The associated boundary-layer analysis yields another explicit expression for U . Both asymptotic predictions are corroborated by an eigenfunction expansion solution of the exact problem for the cases when all physical parameters are held fixed except for a varying colloid size (resulting in S∝B1/2 ) or a varying solute diffusivity (resulting in S∝B ). The boundary-layer structure breaks down near the transition between the active and inactive portions of the boundary. Abstract:The diffusion of nonspherical particles has not been well understood due to the complexity of their contact mechanics and self-organization of their orientations. We perform discrete element method simulations of monodisperse ellipsoids in a shear flow with Lees-Edwards boundary conditions to quantify the relation between the diffusion coefficient and the flow parameters. The results indicate that the particle aspect ratio strongly affects the diffusion coefficient by influencing the particle orientation and alignment. We develop a scaling law for the diffusion coefficient perpendicular to the flow direction, Dyy, which combines the influences of the shear rate _., the solids fraction f, the effective particle diameter deff and the particle aspect ratio Z. We show that D-yy = k(dx) (f,Z)gamma d(2)eff, where k(d) is a dimensionless pre-factor, and a fit is obtained for the functional form of x(f, Z). This scaling law will be useful in developing continuum transport models for applications.
Self-chemophoresis in the thin diffuse interface approximation

Abstract:Self-chemophoresis is an appealing and quite successful interpretation of the motility exhibited by certain chemically active colloidal particles suspended in a solution of their "fuel": the particle has a phoretic response to self-generated, rather than externally imposed, inhomogeneities in the chemical composition of the solution. The postulated mechanism of chemophoresis is the interaction of the particle (via an adsorption potential) with the chemical inhomogeneities in the surrounding medium. When the range of this interaction is much smaller than any other relevant scale in the system, the (translational and rotational) phoretic velocities can be described in terms of a phoretic coefficient and a slip fluid velocity at the surface of the particle. Using the case of a spherical particle as a simple and physically insightful example, here we exploit an integral representation of the rigid-body motion to critically re-examine this framework. The systematic analysis highlights two steps in the approximation: first the thin-layer approximation (very large particle size), and subsequently a lubrication approximation (slow variation of the adsorption potential along the tangential direction). We also discuss how these approximations could be relaxed and the effect of this on the particle's motion.

Abstract:Thermophoresis of charged colloids in aqueous media has wide applications in biology. Most existing studies of thermophoresis focused on spherical particles, but biological compounds are usually non-spherical. The present paper reports a numerical analysis of the thermophoresis of a charged spheroidal colloid in aqueous media. The model accounts for the strongly coupled temperature field, the flow field, the electric potential field, and the ion concentration field. Numerical simulations revealed that prolate spheroids move faster than spherical particles, and oblate spheroids move slower than spherical particles. For the arbitrary electric double layer (EDL) thickness, the thermodiffusion coefficient of prolate (oblate) spheroids increases (decreases) with the increasing particle’s dimension ratio between the major and minor semiaxes. For the extremely thin EDL case, the hydrodynamic effect is significant, and the thermodiffusion coefficient for prolate (oblate) spheroids converges to a fixed value with the increasing particle’s dimension ratio. For the extremely thick EDL case, the particle curvature’s effect also becomes important, and the increasing (decreasing) rate of thermodiffusion coefficient for prolate (oblate) spheroids is reduced slightly.

Abstract:Electrophoresis of a soft particle along the centerline of a cylindrical pore is investigated theoretically in this study. The soft particle consists of an inner hard sphere covered by a concentric porous layer with fixed charge uniformly distributed in it. The polarization effect, the deformation of ion clouds surrounding the particle due to convection flow, is taken into account properly by adopting the full nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann equation. The study reveals that recent investigation in the literature without consideration of the polarization effect could severely overestimate the particle mobility up to nearly two times if the fixed charge in the porous layer is high. The boundary effect in terms of the reduction of particle mobility is very significant when the double layer is thick and diminishes as it gets very thin. The effect of the highly charged cylindrical wall is analyzed, in particular, among other factors of electrokinetic interest. The presence of the cylindrical wall retards the particle motion in general, as compared with an isolated particle. With the generation of an electroosmotic flow, however, the charged wall can either enhance the particle motion or deter it, depending on the surface potential on the wall and the double-layer thickness. The thinner the double layer, the more significant the influence of the osmotic flow on the particle motion in general. The direction of particle motion may even change twice as the reciprocal of the double-layer thickness increases when both the wall and the particle are highly charged. This is due to the competition between the electric driving force of the charged particle and the hydrodynamic retarding force from the background electroosmotic flow. This has direct impact in practical applications of nanofluidics when a weak electric field is applied. Conducting operations near these critical double-layer thicknesses should be avoided in practice.
