Abstract:The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) represents the largest perturbation to the climate system on an inter-annual time scale, but its evolution since the end of the last ice age remains debated due to the lack of unambiguous ENSO records lasting longer than a few centuries. Changes in the concentration and hydrogen isotope ratio of lipids produced by the green alga Botryococcus braunii, which blooms during El Niño rains in the Galápagos Islands, indicate that the early Holocene (9200–5600 yr BP) was characterized by alternating extremes in the intensity and/or frequency of El Niño events that lasted a century or more. Our data from the core of the ENSO region thus calls into question earlier studies that reported a lack of El Niño activity in the early Holocene. In agreement with other proxy evidence from the tropical Pacific, the mid-Holocene (5600–3500 yr BP) was a time of consistently weak El Niño activity, as were the Early Middle Ages (∼1000–1500 yr BP). El Niño activity was moderate to high during the remainder of the last 3500 years. Periods of strong or frequent El Niño tended to occur during peaks in solar activity and during extended droughts in the United States Great Plains linked to La Niña. These changing modes of ENSO activity at millennial and multi-centennial timescales may have been caused by variations in the seasonal receipts of solar radiation associated with the precession of the equinoxes and/or changes in solar activity, respectively.

Abstract:In 2023, the development of El Niño is poised to drive a global upsurge in surface air temperatures (SAT), potentially resulting in unprecedented warming worldwide. Nevertheless, the regional patterns of SAT anomalies remain diverse, obscuring where historical warming records may be surpassed in the forthcoming year. Our study underscores the significant influence of El Niño and the persistence of climate signals on the inter-annual variability of regional SAT, both in amplitude and spatial distribution. The likelihood of global mean SAT exceeding historical records, calculated from July 2023 to June 2024, is estimated at 90%, contingent upon annual-mean sea surface temperature anomalies in the eastern equatorial Pacific exceeding 0.6 °C. Regions particularly susceptible to recording record-high SAT include coastal and adjacent areas in Asia such as the Bay of Bengal and the South China Sea, as well as Alaska, the Caribbean Sea, and the Amazon. This impending warmth heightens the risk of year-round marine heatwaves and escalates the threat of wildfires and other negative consequences in Alaska and the Amazon basin, necessitating strategic mitigation measures to minimize potential worst-case impacts.

Abstract:Global-mean surface temperature rapidly increased 0.29 ± 0.04 K from 2022 to 2023. Such a large interannual global warming spike is not unprecedented in the observational record, with a previous instance occurring in 1976–1977. However, why such large global warming spikes occur is unknown, and the rapid global warming of 2023 has led to concerns that it could have been externally driven. Here we show that climate models that are subject only to internal variability can generate such spikes, but they are an uncommon occurrence ( p = 1.6 % ± 0.1 %). However, when a prolonged La Niña immediately precedes an El Niño in the simulations, as occurred in nature in 1976–1977 and 2022–2023, such spikes become much more common ( p = 10.3 % ± 0.4 %). Furthermore, we find that nearly all simulated spikes ( p = 88.5 % ± 0.3 %) are associated with El Niño occurring that year. Thus, our results underscore the importance of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation in driving the occurrence of global warming spikes such as the one in 2023, without needing to invoke anthropogenic forcing, such as changes in atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases or aerosols, as an explanation.

Abstract:In 2023, the global mean temperature soared to 1.48K above the pre-industrial level, surpassing the previous record by 0.17K. Previous best-guess estimates of known drivers including anthropogenic warming and the El Nino onset fall short by about 0.2K in explaining the temperature rise. Utilizing satellite and reanalysis data, we identify a record-low planetary albedo as the primary factor bridging this gap. The decline is caused largely by a reduced low-cloud cover in the northern mid-latitudes and tropics, in continuation of a multi-annual trend. Understanding how much of the low-cloud trend is due to internal variability, reduced aerosol concentrations, or a possibly emerging low-cloud feedback will be crucial for assessing the current and expected future warming.

Abstract:Global ocean temperature has been rising since the late 1970s at a speed unprecedented during the past century of recordkeeping. This accelerated warming has profound impacts not only on the marine ecosystem and oceanic carbon uptake but also on the global water cycle and climate. During this rapid warming period, the tropical Pacific displays a pronounced La Niña-like trend, characterized by an intensification of westeast SST gradient and of atmospheric zonal overturning circulation, namely the Walker circulation. This La Niña-like trend differs from the El Niño-like trend in warm climate projected by most climate models, and cannot be explained by responses of the global water cycle to warm climate. The results of this study indicate that the intensification of the zonal SST gradient and the Walker circulation are associated with recent strengthening of the upper-ocean meridional overturning circulation.

Abstract:Closely following the hiatus warming period, two astonishing high temperature records reached in 2014 and 2015 consecutively. To investigate the occurrence features of record-breaking high temperatures in recent years, a new index focusing the frequency of the top 10 high annual mean temperatures was defined in this study. Analyses based on this index shown that record-breaking high temperatures occurred over most regions of the globe with a salient increasing trend after 1960 s, even during the so-called hiatus period. Overlapped on the ongoing background warming trend and the interdecadal climate variabilities, the El Niño events, particularly the strong ones, can make a significant contribution to the occurrence of high temperatures on interannual timescale. High temperatures associated with El Niño events mainly occurred during the winter annual period. As the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) struggled back to its positive phase since 2014, the global warming returned back to a new accelerated warming period, marked by the record-breaking high temperatures in 2014. Intensified by the super strong El Niño, successive high records occurred in 2015 and 2016. Higher frequencies of record high temperatures would occur in the near future because the PDO tends to maintain a continuously positive phase.

Abstract:Abstract The global physical and biogeochemical environment has been substantially altered in response to increased atmospheric greenhouse gases from human activities. In 2023, the sea surface temperature (SST) and upper 2000 m ocean heat content (OHC) reached record highs. The 0–2000 m OHC in 2023 exceeded that of 2022 by 15 ± 10 ZJ (1 Zetta Joules = 10 21 Joules) (updated IAP/CAS data); 9 ± 5 ZJ (NCEI/NOAA data). The Tropical Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, and southern oceans recorded their highest OHC observed since the 1950s. Associated with the onset of a strong El Niño, the global SST reached its record high in 2023 with an annual mean of ∼0.23°C higher than 2022 and an astounding > 0.3°C above 2022 values for the second half of 2023. The density stratification and spatial temperature inhomogeneity indexes reached their highest values in 2023.

Abstract:Global temperatures were exceptionally high in 2023/24. Every month from June 2023 to June 2024 set a new record, and September shattered the previous record by 0.5 °C. The 2023 annual average approached 1.5 °C above pre‐industrial levels. This results from both long‐term warming and internal variability, with the occurrence of an El Niño episode. However the amplitude of the 2023/24 anomalies was remarkable and surprised the scientific community. Here we analyze the rarity of 2023/24 global temperatures from a climate perspective. We show that a 'normal' year 2023 would have roughly equaled the previous annual record, and that the most extreme events of 2023/24 rank among the most extreme since 1940. Our analysis suggests that the 2023/24 event can be reconciled with the long‐term trend and an intense, but not implausible, peak of internal variability.

Abstract:The 2020–2023 La Niña event, the third triple-dip occurrence since 1950, stands out for its unique characteristics when compared to the preceding events in 1973–1976 and 1998–2001. Unlike its predecessors, the latest event emerged without a preceding strong El Niño episode, starting from a state of weak discharge. Moreover, the resurgence of cold sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies during 2020–2023 showed a loose link to ocean-atmosphere variability in the northern subtropical Pacific. The spatial pattern of anomalous conditions in this recent event featured persistent SST cooling in the southeast tropical Pacific, accompanied by pronounced meridional southerly wind anomalies. Our comprehensive investigation indicates a minimal role of subsurface ocean dynamics, underscoring the exceptional strength of cross-equatorial meridional southerly wind anomalies as a primary driver of sustained negative sea surface temperature anomalies. By considering the influences of intra-basin and inter-basin factors, we propose that the observed patterns may be the combined outcome of interannual variability within the tropical Pacific and decadal variations beyond the tropics. Noteworthy contributions from the low-frequency components of the South Pacific Meridional Mode and the Atlantic Warm Pool further shape the dynamics of this event. Our findings underline the increasing importance of meridional winds in shaping the evolution of ENSO in recent decades.

Abstract:The 2023/24 El Niño ranks as the second strongest event in the twenty-first century thus far. The event exhibited a two-step warming tendency and two warming centers, which could not be explained by the heat content buildup. Here, by conducting observational analysis and model experiments, we show that the record-breaking pantropical warming in 2023 mitigated this El Niño and confined the warming to the eastern basin, and that a series of westerly wind bursts induced another warming center in the central equatorial Pacific toward the end of 2023. Yet the effects of pantropical forcing and wind bursts coincidentally offset each other, leaving the heat content buildup appearing as the primary cause of the 2023/24 El Niño. Our results not only confirm the essential role of equatorial ocean heat recharge for El Niño development, but also demonstrate the necessity of accounting for multi-scale interactions from a global perspective to predict El Niño. The strong 2023/24 El Niño was affected by heat content buildup, westerly wind bursts, and record-breaking sea surface temperature warming over the tropics, with heat content buildup being the primary cause, according to analysis of observational evidence and model forecast simulations.

Abstract:In the boreal spring of 2023, an extreme coastal El Niño struck the coastal regions of Peru and Ecuador, causing devastating rainfalls, flooding, and record dengue outbreaks. Observations and ocean model experiments reveal that northerly alongshore winds and westerly wind anomalies in the eastern equatorial Pacific, initially associated with a record-strong Madden-Julian Oscillation and cyclonic disturbance off Peru in March, drove the coastal warming through suppressed coastal upwelling and downwelling Kelvin waves. Atmospheric model simulations indicate that the coastal warming in turn favors the observed wind anomalies over the far eastern tropical Pacific by triggering atmospheric deep convection. This implies a positive feedback between the coastal warming and the winds, which further amplifies the coastal warming. In May, the seasonal background cooling precludes deep convection and the coastal Bjerknes feedback, leading to the weakening of the coastal El Niño. This coastal El Niño is rare but predictable at 1 month lead, which is useful to protect lives and properties.

Abstract:The deep ocean, a vast thermal reservoir, absorbs excess heat under greenhouse warming, which ultimately regulates the Earth's surface climate. Even if CO2 emissions are successfully reduced, the stored heat will gradually be released, resulting in a particular pattern of ocean warming. Here, we show that deep ocean warming will lead to El Niño-like ocean warming and resultant increased precipitation in the tropical eastern Pacific with southward shift of the intertropical convergence zone. Consequently, the El Niño-Southern Oscillation shifts eastward, intensifying Eastern Pacific El Niño events. In particular, the deep ocean warming could increase convective extreme El Niño events by 40 to 80% relative to the current climate. Our findings suggest that anthropogenic greenhouse warming will have a prolonged impact on El Niño variability through delayed deep ocean warming, even if CO2 stabilization is achieved.

Abstract:Observations revealed notable discrepancies in the 2023/24 El Niño compared to earlier events, despite registering moderate Niño3.4 index magnitudes. Essential indicators such as the westerly wind burst, thermocline zonal tilting, and eastward propagation of oceanic Kelvin waves were conspicuously weak, indicating a weak air‐sea coupled in contrast to past occurrences, the 2023/24 El Niño coincided with unusually high North Atlantic Tripole and extratropical North Pacific sea surface temperatures (SSTs). The elevated North Atlantic Tripole SST triggered a strong negative Pacific meridional mode and easterly anomalies in the equatorial western‐central Pacific. At the same time, the extratropical North Pacific SST induced a negative Pacific Decadal Oscillation‐like pattern. These anomalies potentially dampened SST‐wind coupling during the developmental stages of El Niño. The negative Pacific meridional mode distinguished the 2023/24 El Niño from previous events and substantially altered its local and remote influences.

Abstract:Including an exceptionally warm Northern Hemisphere (NH) summer 1 ,2 , 2023 has been reported as the hottest year on record 3-5 . Contextualizing recent anthropogenic warming against past natural variability is nontrivial, however, because the sparse 19 th century meteorological records tend to be too warm 6 . Here, we combine observed and reconstructed June-August (JJA) surface air temperatures to show that 2023 was the warmest NH extra-tropical summer over the past 2000 years exceeding the 95% confidence range of natural climate variability by more than half a degree Celsius. Comparison of the 2023 JJA warming against the coldest reconstructed summer in 536 CE reveals a maximum range of pre-Anthropocene-to-2023 temperatures of 3.93°C. Although 2023 is consistent with a greenhouse gases-induced warming trend 7 that is amplified by an unfolding El Niño event 8 , this extreme emphasizes the urgency to implement international agreements for carbon emission reduction.

Abstract:During the Late Palaeogene between ~40 and 23 million years ago (Ma), Earth transitioned from a warm non-glaciated climate state and developed large dynamic ice sheets on Antarctica. This transition is largely inferred from the deep-sea oxygen isotope record because records from independent temperature proxies are sparse. Here we present a 25-million-year-long alkenone-based record of surface temperature change from the North Atlantic Ocean. Our long temperature record documents peak warmth (~29 °C) during the middle Eocene, a slow overall decline to the Eocene/Oligocene transition (EOT, ~34 Ma) and high-amplitude variability (between ~28 and 24 °C) during the Oligo–Miocene. The overall structure of the record is similar to that of the deep-sea record, but a distinct anomaly is also evident. We find no evidence of surface cooling in the North Atlantic directly coinciding with the EOT when Antarctica first became cold enough to sustain large ice sheets and subantarctic waters cooled substantially. Surface ocean cooling during the EOT was therefore strongly asymmetric between hemispheres. This transient thermal decoupling of the North Atlantic Ocean from the southern high latitudes suggests that Antarctic glaciation triggered changes in ocean circulation-driven heat transport and influenced the far-field climate response. Northern and Southern hemisphere temperatures were decoupled during the Eocene/Oligocene transition, suggests a sea surface temperature record from the North Atlantic.

Abstract:The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the strongest driver of year-to-year variations of the global climate and can lead to extreme weather conditions and disasters in various regions around the world. Here, we review two different approaches for the early forecast of El Niño that we have developed recently: the climate network-based approach allows forecasting the onset of an El Niño event about 1 year ahead, while the complexity-based approach allows additionally to estimate the magnitude of an upcoming El Niño event in the calendar year before. For 2023, both approaches predict the onset of an El Niño event, with a combined onset probability of about 89%. The complexity-based approach predicts a moderate-to-strong El Niño with a magnitude of $1.49\pm0.37$°C. Since El Niño events temporarily increase the global temperature, we expect that the coming El Niño will increase the global temperature by about +0.2°C, likely making 2024 the hottest year since the beginning of instrumental observations. It is possible that as a consequence of this El Niño, the +1.5°C target (compared to pre-industrial levels) will be temporarily breached already in 2024.

Deciphering Super El Niño: Development of a Novel Predictive Model Integrating Local and Global Climatic Signals

Abstract:In recent years, extreme weather events have surged, highlighting the urgent need for action on the climate emergency. The year 2023 saw record-breaking global temperatures, unprecedented heatwaves in Europe, devastating floods in Asia, and severe wildfires in North America and Australia. Super El Niño events, known for their profound impact on global weather, play a critical role in these changes, causing severe economic and environmental damage. This study presents a novel predictive model that integrates systematically local and global climatic signals to forecast Super El Niño events, introducing the Super El Niño Index (SEI), which value of 80 or higher defines a Super El Niño event. Our analysis shows that the SEI accurately reflects past Super El Niño events, including those from 1982-83, 1997-98, and 2015-16, with SEI values for these periods containing 80 within the 2-sigma standard deviation. Using data up to 2022, our model predicted an SEI of around 80 for 2023, indicating a Super El Niño for the 2023-24 period. Recent observations confirm that the 2023-24 El Niño is among the five strongest recorded Super El Niño events in history. An analysis of SEI trends from 1982 to 2023 reveals a gradual increase, with recent El Niño events consistently exceeding SEI values of 70. This trend suggests that El Niño events are increasingly approaching Super El Niño intensity, potentially due to more favorable conditions in the equatorial Pacific. This increase in SEI values and the frequency of stronger El Niño events may be attributed to the ongoing effects of global warming. These findings emphasize the need for heightened preparedness and strategic planning to mitigate the impacts of future Super El Niño events, which are likely to become more frequent in the coming decades.
