Abstract:The cause of changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) during the recent ice ages is yet to be fully explained. Most mechanisms for glacial-interglacial CO2 change have centred on carbon exchange with the deep ocean, owing to its large size and relatively rapid exchange with the atmosphere(1). The Southern Ocean is thought to have a key role in this exchange, as much of the deep ocean is ventilated to the atmosphere in this region(2). However, it is difficult to reconstruct changes in deep Southern Ocean carbon storage, so few direct tests of this hypothesis have been carried out. Here we present deep-sea coral boron isotope data that track the pH-and thus the CO2 chemistry-of the deep Southern Ocean over the past forty thousand years. At sites closest to the Antarctic continental margin, and most influenced by the deep southern waters that form the ocean's lower overturning cell, we find a close relationship between ocean pH and atmospheric CO2: during intervals of low CO2, ocean pH is low, reflecting enhanced ocean carbon storage; and during intervals of rising CO2, ocean pH rises, reflecting loss of carbon from the ocean to the atmosphere. Correspondingly, at shallower sites we find rapid (millennial-to centennial-scale) decreases in pH during abrupt increases in CO2, reflecting the rapid transfer of carbon from the deep ocean to the upper ocean and atmosphere. Our findings confirm the importance of the deep Southern Ocean in ice-age CO2 change, and show that deep-ocean CO2 release can occur as a dynamic feedback to rapid climate change on centennial timescales.

Abstract:The Southern Ocean plays a crucial role in regulating atmospheric CO2 on centennial to millennial time scales. However, observations of sufficient resolution to explore this have been lacking. Here, we report high-resolution, multiproxy records based on precisely dated deep-sea corals from the Southern Ocean. Paired deep (Delta C-14 and delta B-11) and surface (delta N-15) proxy data point to enhanced upwelling coupled with reduced efficiency of the biological pump at 14.6 and 11.7 thousand years (ka) ago, which would have facilitated rapid carbon release to the atmosphere. Transient periods of unusually well-ventilated waters in the deep Southern Ocean occurred at 16.3 and 12.8 ka ago. Contemporaneous atmospheric carbon records indicate that these Southern Ocean ventilation events are also important in releasing respired carbon from the deep ocean to the atmosphere. Our results thus highlight two distinct modes of Southern Ocean circulation and biogeochemistry associated with centennial-scale atmospheric CO2 jumps during the last deglaciation.
Southern Ocean drives multidecadal atmospheric CO2 rise during Heinrich Stadials

Abstract:The last glacial period was punctuated by cold intervals in the North Atlantic region that culminated in extensive iceberg discharge events. These cold intervals, known as Heinrich Stadials, are associated with abrupt climate shifts worldwide. Here, we present CO2 measurements from the West Antarctic Ice Sheet Divide ice core across Heinrich Stadials 2 to 5 at decadal-scale resolution. Our results reveal multi-decadal-scale jumps in atmospheric CO2 concentrations within each Heinrich Stadial. The largest magnitude of change (14.0 ± 0.8 ppm within 55 ± 10 y) occurred during Heinrich Stadial 4. Abrupt rises in atmospheric CO2 are concurrent with jumps in atmospheric CH4 and abrupt changes in the water isotopologs in multiple Antarctic ice cores, the latter of which suggest rapid warming of both Antarctica and Southern Ocean vapor source regions. The synchroneity of these rapid shifts points to wind-driven upwelling of relatively warm, carbon-rich waters in the Southern Ocean, likely linked to a poleward intensification of the Southern Hemisphere westerly winds. Using an isotope-enabled atmospheric circulation model, we show that observed changes in Antarctic water isotopologs can be explained by abrupt and widespread Southern Ocean warming. Our work presents evidence for a multi-decadal- to century-scale response of the Southern Ocean to changes in atmospheric circulation, demonstrating the potential for dynamic changes in Southern Ocean biogeochemistry and circulation on human timescales. Furthermore, it suggests that anthropogenic CO2 uptake in the Southern Ocean may weaken with poleward strengthening westerlies today and into the future.

Abstract:During the Late Palaeogene between ~40 and 23 million years ago (Ma), Earth transitioned from a warm non-glaciated climate state and developed large dynamic ice sheets on Antarctica. This transition is largely inferred from the deep-sea oxygen isotope record because records from independent temperature proxies are sparse. Here we present a 25-million-year-long alkenone-based record of surface temperature change from the North Atlantic Ocean. Our long temperature record documents peak warmth (~29 °C) during the middle Eocene, a slow overall decline to the Eocene/Oligocene transition (EOT, ~34 Ma) and high-amplitude variability (between ~28 and 24 °C) during the Oligo–Miocene. The overall structure of the record is similar to that of the deep-sea record, but a distinct anomaly is also evident. We find no evidence of surface cooling in the North Atlantic directly coinciding with the EOT when Antarctica first became cold enough to sustain large ice sheets and subantarctic waters cooled substantially. Surface ocean cooling during the EOT was therefore strongly asymmetric between hemispheres. This transient thermal decoupling of the North Atlantic Ocean from the southern high latitudes suggests that Antarctic glaciation triggered changes in ocean circulation-driven heat transport and influenced the far-field climate response. Northern and Southern hemisphere temperatures were decoupled during the Eocene/Oligocene transition, suggests a sea surface temperature record from the North Atlantic.

Abstract:Significance The concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide ( p CO 2 ) varies by 80–100 ppm on glacial–interglacial timescales, with lower p CO 2 during the ice ages. In the modern Southern Ocean, the surface nutrients are not fully consumed by phytoplankton, resulting in leakage of deeply sequestered CO 2 to the atmosphere. It has been suggested that more complete nutrient consumption in the Southern Ocean would have caused the lower p CO 2 during the ice ages. Here, we provide the most spatially comprehensive evidence to date in support of the proposal that the entire Southern Ocean was nutrient-depleted during the last ice age relative to modern conditions. These data are consistent with the hypothesis that Southern Ocean changes contributed to the lower atmospheric p CO 2 of the ice ages.

Abstract:Antarctic ice-core data reveal that the atmosphere experienced abrupt centennial increases in CO2 concentration during the last deglaciation (~18 thousand to 11 thousand years ago). Establishing the role of ocean circulation in these changes requires high-resolution, accurately dated marine records. Here, we report radiocarbon data from uranium-thorium-dated deep-sea corals in the Equatorial Atlantic and Drake Passage over the past 25,000 years. Two major deglacial radiocarbon shifts occurred in phase with centennial atmospheric CO2 rises at 14.8 thousand and 11.7 thousand years ago. We interpret these radiocarbon-enriched signals to represent two short-lived (less than 500 years) "overshoot" events, with Atlantic meridional overturning stronger than that of the modern era. These results provide compelling evidence for a close coupling of ocean circulation and centennial climate events during the last deglaciation.

Abstract:Abstract Changes in ocean circulation and the biological carbon pump have been implicated as the drivers behind the rise in atmospheric CO 2 across the last deglaciation; however, the processes involved remain uncertain. Previous records have hinted at a partitioning of deep ocean ventilation across the two major intervals of atmospheric CO 2 rise, but the consequences of differential ventilation on the Si cycle has not been explored. Here we present three new records of silicon isotopes in diatoms and sponges from the Southern Ocean that together show increased Si supply from deep mixing during the deglaciation with a maximum during the Younger Dryas (YD). We suggest Antarctic sea ice and Atlantic overturning conditions favoured abyssal ocean ventilation at the YD and marked an interval of Si cycle reorganisation. By regulating the strength of the biological pump, the glacial–interglacial shift in the Si cycle may present an important control on Pleistocene CO 2 concentrations.

Abstract:Carbon release from the deep ocean at glacial terminations is a critical component of past climate change, but the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. We present a 28,000-year high-resolution record of carbonate ion concentration, a key parameter of the global carbon cycle, at 5-km water depth in the South Atlantic. We observe similar carbonate ion concentrations between the Last Glacial Maximum and the late Holocene, despite elevated concentrations in the glacial surface ocean. This strongly supports the importance of respiratory carbon accumulation in a stratified deep ocean for atmospheric CO2 reduction during the last ice age. After similar to 9 mu mol/kg decline during Heinrich Stadial 1, deep South Atlantic carbonate ion concentration rose by similar to 24 mu mol/kg from the onset of Bolling to Preboreal, likely caused by strengthening North Atlantic Deep Water formation (Bolling) or increased ventilation in the Southern Ocean (Younger Drays) or both (Pre-boreal). The similar to 15 mu mol/kg decline in deep water carbonate ion since similar to 10 ka is consistent with extraction of alkalinity from seawater by deepsea CaCO3 compensation and coral reef growth on continental shelves during the Holocene.Between 16,600 and 15,000 years ago, deep South Atlantic carbonate ion values converged with those at 3.4-km water depth in the western equatorial Pacific, as did carbon isotope and radiocarbon values. These observations suggest a period of enhanced lateral exchange of carbon between the deep South Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, probably due to an increased transfer of momentum from southern westerlies to the Southern Ocean. By spreading carbon-rich deep Pacific waters around Antarctica for up-welling, invigorated interocean deep water exchange would lead to more efficient CO2 degassing from the Southern Ocean, and thus to an atmospheric CO2 rise, during the early deglaciation. Abstract:Ocean circulation critically affects the global climate and atmospheric carbon dioxide through redistribution of heat and carbon in the Earth system. Despite intensive research, the nature of past ocean circulation changes remains elusive. Here we present deep-water carbonate ion concentration reconstructions for widely distributed locations in the Atlantic Ocean, where low carbonate ion concentrations indicate carbon-rich waters. These data show a low-carbonate-ion water mass that extended northward up to about 20° S in the South Atlantic at 3–4 km depth during the Last Glacial Maximum. In combination with radiocarbon ages, neodymium isotopes and carbon isotopes, we conclude that this low-carbonate-ion signal reflects a widespread expansion of carbon-rich Pacific deep waters into the South Atlantic, revealing a glacial deep Atlantic circulation scheme different than commonly considered. Comparison of high-resolution carbonate ion records from different water depths in the South Atlantic indicates that this Pacific deep-water expansion developed from approximately 38,000 to 28,000 years ago. We infer that its associated carbon sequestration may have contributed critically to the contemporaneous decline in atmospheric carbon dioxide, thereby helping to initiate the glacial maximum. Carbon-rich Pacific deep water extended into the South Atlantic some 38,000 to 28,000 years ago, potentially contributing to a reduction in atmospheric carbon dioxide and the onset of the Last Glacial Maximum, according to deep-water carbonate chemistry reconstructions.

Abstract:Using new and published marine fossil radiocarbon ( 14 C/C) measurements, a tracer uniquely sensitive to circulation and air-sea gas exchange, we establish several benchmarks for Atlantic, Southern, and Pacific deep-sea circulation and ventilation since the last ice age. We find the most 14 C-depleted water in glacial Pacific bottom depths, rather than the mid-depths as they are today, which is best explained by a slowdown in glacial deep-sea overturning in addition to a "flipped" glacial Pacific overturning configuration. These observations cannot be produced by changes in air-sea gas exchange alone, and they underscore the major role for changes in the overturning circulation for glacial deep-sea carbon storage in the vast Pacific abyss and the concomitant drawdown of atmospheric CO 2 .

Abstract:Proxy records show that before the onset of modern anthropogenic warming, globally coherent cooling occurred from the Medieval Warm Period to the Little Ice Age. The long memory of the ocean suggests that these historical surface anomalies are associated with ongoing deep-ocean temperature adjustments. Combining an ocean model with modern and paleoceanographic data leads to a prediction that the deep Pacific is still adjusting to the cooling going into the Little Ice Age, whereas temperature trends in the surface ocean and deep Atlantic reflect modern warming. This prediction is corroborated by temperature changes identified between the HMS Challenger expedition of the 1870s and modern hydrography. The implied heat loss in the deep ocean since 1750 CE offsets one-fourth of the global heat gain in the upper ocean.

Abstract:Abstract Enhanced ocean carbon storage during the Pleistocene ice ages lowered atmospheric CO 2 concentrations by 80 to 100 ppm relative to interglacial levels. Leading hypotheses to explain this phenomenon invoke a greater efficiency of the ocean's biological pump, in which case carbon storage in the deep sea would have been accompanied by a corresponding reduction in dissolved oxygen. We exploit the sensitivity of organic matter preservation in marine sediments to bottom water oxygen concentration to constrain the level of dissolved oxygen in the deep central equatorial Pacific Ocean during the last glacial period (18,000 – 28,000 years BP) to have been within the range of 20‐50 μmol/kg, much less than modern value of ca. 168 μmol/kg. We further demonstrate that reduced oxygen levels characterized the water column below a depth of ~1000 m. Converting the ice‐age oxygen level to an equivalent concentration of respiratory CO 2 , and extrapolating globally, we estimate that deep‐sea CO 2 storage during the last ice age exceeded modern values by as much as 850 PgC, sufficient to balance the loss of carbon from the atmosphere (ca. 200 PgC) and from the terrestrial biosphere (ca. 300‐600 PgC). In addition, recognizing the enhanced preservation of organic matter in ice‐age sediments of the deep Pacific Ocean helps reconcile previously unexplained inconsistencies among different geochemical and micropaleontological proxy records used to assess past changes in biological productivity of the ocean.

Abstract:As a major reservoir of heat and CO2, the Pacific Ocean is an important component of the global climate system, but the nature of its circulation under different climatic conditions remains poorly understood. We present sedimentary records of surface water hydrography and nutrient dynamics from the subarctic Pacific Ocean, with the aim of investigating changes in sea-ice coverage, biological productivity, and sea surface temperature in the subarctic Northwest Pacific since 32 kyr. Our records indicate an enhanced North Pacific surface water stratification from the last glacial to Heinrich Stadial 1, which generally limited the siliceous productivity supply to the surface water. A productivity peak during the Bølling/Allerød warm interval was associated with an increase in the atmospheric pCO2, and it was driven by the increased supply of nutrient- and CO2-rich waters. This process can be attributed to the collapse of the North Pacific Intermediate Water formation at the onset of the Bølling/Allerød interstadial. Moreover, a northward shift of the westerly winds and the gyre boundary could have modulated the expansion of the subpolar gyre, driving changes in poleward heat transport, biogeochemistry, and the hydroclimate of the North Pacific. Our results are consistent with modern evidence for a northward shift of the westerlies in response to global warming, which will likely result in CO2 outgassing from the subarctic Pacific Ocean in the future.

Abstract:Ice cores have revolutionized our views of the Earth system. They record past climatic and environmental parameters that range on time scales from synoptic events to hundreds of thousands of years. For instance, the Vostok ice core reached an age of 420 ka (thousand years) (Figure 1), revealing a close linkage between climate and greenhouse gas concentrations over the last four glacial-interglacial cycles (Petit et al., 1999). Up to now, the longest ice core record is dated back to 800 ka from the Antarctic EPICA Dome C ice core (Jouzel et al., 2007). One of the most important findings from this record is that the present concentrations of primary greenhouse gases (i.e., CO2, CH4 and N2O) are at higher levels than any time during the past 800 ka, leading to a wide concern about greenhouse gas emissions from human activities and their roles in recent global warming.

Abstract:In recent years, the Southern Ocean has experienced extremely low sea ice cover in multiple summers. These low events were preceded by a multidecadal positive trend that culminated in record high ice coverage in 2014. This abrupt transition has led some authors to suggest that Antarctic sea ice has undergone a regime shift. In this study we analyze the satellite sea ice record since 1979 and atmospheric reanalyses to assess the evidence for such a shift. We find that the standard deviation of the summer sea ice record has doubled from 0.31 million km2 in 1979-2006 to 0.76 million km2 for 2007-2022. This increased variance is accompanied by a longer season-to-season sea ice memory. The atmosphere is the primary driver of Antarctic sea ice variability, but using a linear predictive model we show that sea ice changes cannot be explained by the atmosphere alone. Identifying whether a regime shift has occurred is difficult without a complete understanding of the physical mechanism of change. However, the statistical changes that we demonstrate (i.e., increased variance and autocorrelation, and a changed response to atmospheric forcing), as well as the increased spatial coherence noted by previous research, are indicators based on dynamical systems theory of an abrupt critical transition. Thus our analysis is further evidence in support of a changed Antarctic sea ice system.

Abstract:The intensification of Northern Hemisphere glaciation (iNHG) at 2.73 Ma is associated with a reorganization of the subarctic Pacific Ocean and abrupt drop in opal mass accumulation rates. Uncertainty, however, remains around the extent to which these changes altered carbon dynamics and contributed to a reduction in atmospheric pCO2 and global temperatures. These issues are addressed here using the boron isotope (δ11B) proxy in diatom frustules to reconstruct past changes in the pH and pCO2 of ambient seawater. Diatom δ11B and [B] indicate a subarctic Pacific surface water increase of 0.3–0.5 pH units over the iNHG. This confirms that delivery of carbon and nutrients into surface waters was reduced at this time, explaining the drop in opal productivity and limiting CO2 outgassing from the ocean interior. We consider two hypotheses to explain this based on potential changes in circulation from the late Pliocene to early Pleistocene: "ventilation to stratification" or "stratification to ventilation." The ventilation to stratification hypothesis, which posits a switch from vigorous Pacific Meridional Overturning Circulation in the Pliocene to stratification over iNHG, has received more attention in the literature. The stratification to ventilation hypothesis, which posits a modest increase in ventilation, is more consistent with modern and late Pleistocene analogs, the majority of models and δ13C data. These late Pliocene changes in the subarctic Pacific, in conjunction with other external and internal processes including those in the Southern Ocean, would have contributed to a lowering of atmospheric pCO2 and the long‐term expansion of ice‐sheets across the Northern Hemisphere.

Abstract:Global cooling with the onset of Antarctic glaciation ca. 34 Ma across the Eocene–Oligocene transition (EOT) terminated the early Cenozoic greenhouse climate state and marked the beginning of icehouse conditions. Although a pCO2 decline is considered to have been a major cause of this climate shift, the associated carbon-sequestration mechanism remains unclear. Here, we assessed ocean production and circulation changes across the EOT using numerical simulations combined with a novel proxy, namely, bacterial magnetofossils, the abundance and morphology of which are sensitive to sedimentary organic matter accumulation and oxygenation. We detected production and oxygenation declines in the equatorial Pacific Ocean coeval with increased biological production in the Southern Ocean after the EOT. Corroborated by simulation results and evidence from the Subantarctic region, we interpret this counterintuitive combination as a result of enhanced bottom-water formation and biological pump efficiency in the Southern Ocean due to Antarctic glacial buildup across the EOT. These results provide key evidence for deep Pacific Ocean deoxygenation and increased respired carbon concentrations, which amplified CO2 decline across the EOT.

Abstract:Global climate and the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) are correlated over recent glacial cycles. The combination of processes responsible for a rise in atmospheric CO2 at the last glacial termination (23,000 to 9,000 years ago), however, remains uncertain. Establishing the timing and rate of CO2 changes in the past provides critical insight into the mechanisms that influence the carbon cycle and helps put present and future anthropogenic emissions in context. Here we present CO2 and methane (CH4) records of the last deglaciation from a new high-accumulation West Antarctic ice core with unprecedented temporal resolution and precise chronology. We show that although low-frequency CO2 variations parallel changes in Antarctic temperature, abrupt CO2 changes occur that have a clear relationship with abrupt climate changes in the Northern Hemisphere. A significant proportion of the direct radiative forcing associated with the rise in atmospheric CO2 occurred in three sudden steps, each of 10 to 15 parts per million. Every step took place in less than two centuries and was followed by no notable change in atmospheric CO2 for about 1,000 to 1,500 years. Slow, millennial-scale ventilation of Southern Ocean CO2-rich, deep-ocean water masses is thought to have been fundamental to the rise in atmospheric CO2 associated with the glacial termination, given the strong covariance of CO2 levels and Antarctic temperatures. Our data establish a contribution from an abrupt, centennial-scale mode of CO2 variability that is not directly related to Antarctic temperature. We suggest that processes operating on centennial timescales, probably involving the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation, seem to be influencing global carbon-cycle dynamics and are at present not widely considered in Earth system models.

Abstract:The global climate has been gradually cooling over the Cenozoic and is punctuated by the intensification of Northern Hemisphere Glaciation (NHG) from the latest Pliocene to earliest Pleistocene (∼3.1–2.5 millions of years ago, Ma). A decline of atmospheric CO2 is supposed as a prerequisite for the NHG, but the associated carbon-cycle processes remain elusive. Here we combine foraminiferal records of neodymium isotope and boron-calcium ratio, and simulations of an Earth system model, to investigate changes in the water-mass composition and carbonate-ion concentration of the deep Pacific Ocean during the NHG. Our proxy records have revealed a significant expansion of southern-sourced waters with increased respired carbon storage into the deep Pacific during the NHG. These changes may be explained by strengthened deep-water formation and biological-pump efficiency in the Southern Ocean due to Antarctic sea-ice growth, as suggested by our model experiments and evidence from the Sub-Antarctic region. These results provide key clues for quantifying the role of the dissolved inorganic carbon content of deep Pacific waters in modulating atmospheric CO2 during the NHG.
