Abstract:Abstract New generation thin, lightweight and damage-resistant glass, having impressively impact resistance and ability to be bent up to small radii, appears to be the optimal material for extremely deformable structural elements. Its structural use and design require an accurate evaluation of its mechanical properties. However, standard methods to test the glass strength, as the Four-Point Bending and the Coaxial Double Ring test, cannot be used for thin glass, due to its high deformability. Here, an innovative test is proposed, consisting into deforming a thin element into a costant-curvature shape, by prescribing a rotation on two opposite edges of a rectangular plate, while allowing the adjustment of the distance between the supporting hinges. This produces a deformation into an arch of a circle and to a constant stress distribution, allowing to determine the thin glass strength with very simple formulas. An innovative experimental setup, recently proposed for twisting tests on thin glass, has been adapted for constant-curvature bending tests, based on the results of both analytical modelling and numerical analyses. This has been used to perform an experimental campaign, comprising 15 destructive tests on chemically tempered thin glass.

Abstract:The estimation of various methods of determining of strong characteristics of glass samples is carried out. The method of the research of glass samples with the orientation of the widerside of the cross-section of the sample, in contrastto the different research methods based on thevertical orientation of the wider side of the crosssection of the sample. The main physical and mechanical characteristics of ordinary sheet glass when tested for bending, and the bending strength itself is determined. Statistical analysis of theobtained results was performed using the twoparametric Weibull distribution.The object of the study was to determine the strength characteristics, which by standard methods complicates the process of making standard samples and leads to a large welcome material. For the research, the optimal technologies of manufacturing and consumption of materials of research samples were developed.The method of studying the strength of glass at three-point bends was used, and to determine the modulus of elasticity used methods to determine its relative deformations using strain gauges and deflections. The statistical method for estimating strength was the two parametric Weibulldistribution.The result confirms the feasibility of using the recommended approach for the manufacture and testing of test specimens to determine their strength, which is an additional reduction in costs as a material. The use of the Weibull statisticaldistribution allowed the characteristic values of strength that developed for individual series of samples with sufficient accuracy.The study confirmed the feasibility of further research on the stability of flat glass elements and the use of accurate methods for determining the modulus of elasticity of glass. The result of the evaluation of the influence of the orientation of the samples on the experimental stand and the influence of the flat form of deformation of the value of strength and modulus of elasticity in vertically oriented samples is obtained.

Abstract:Abstract Flexible glass is an interesting substrate for a variety of displays, especially bendable or foldable ones, as it shows excellent surface properties and appealing haptics. With the necessary skill, flexible glass can be coated with thin films of different functionality, such as electrical or optical thin films, using plasma processes. In displays, thin film coatings such as transparent conductive electrodes and/or antireflective layer stacks are of major importance. Despite its attractive surface properties, however, flexible glass is still brittle, and its strength must be examined and monitored during any functionalization process, especially with regard to the fatigue behaviour. Currently, specific setups for cyclic fatigue testing of coated flexible glass are not available. Therefore, a new test method is presented herein for easy-to-handle rapid strength and fatigue testing using an endurance testing machine. This method overcomes two issues with the commonly used two-point bending test: the correct insertion of specimens is much easier, and both strength and fatigue testing using the same setup are now possible. Finite element method (FEM) simulation outcomes and first experimental simple fracture tests show that results comparable to those with a two-point bending test setup can be achieved with less effort. This makes it possible to analyze the fracture behaviour of flexible glass under cyclic loading and to evaluate the influence of thin film stress and other coating properties on its performance. Phase-Field Fracture Modelling of Thin Monolithic and Laminated Glass Plates under Quasi-Static Bending

Abstract:A phase-field description of brittle fracture is employed in the reported four-point bending analyses of monolithic and laminated glass plates. Our aims are: (i) to compare different phase-field fracture formulations applied to thin glass plates, (ii) to assess the consequences of the dimensional reduction of the problem and mesh density and refinement, and (iii) to validate for quasi-static loading the time-/temperature-dependent material properties we derived recently for two commonly used polymer foils made of polyvinyl butyral or ethylene-vinyl acetate. As the nonlinear response prior to fracture, typical of the widely used Bourdin–Francfort–Marigo model, can lead to a significant overestimation of the response of thin plates under bending, the numerical study investigates two additional phase-field fracture models providing the linear elastic phase of the stress-strain diagram. The typical values of the critical fracture energy and tensile strength of glass lead to a phase-field length-scale parameter that is challenging to resolve in the numerical simulations. Therefore, we show how to determine the fracture energy concerning the applied dimensional reduction and the value of the length-scale parameter relative to the thickness of the plate. The comparison shows that the phase-field models provide very good agreement with the measured stresses and resistance of laminated glass, despite the fact that only one/two cracks are localised using the quasi-static analysis, whereas multiple cracks evolve during the experiment. It was also observed that the stiffness and resistance of the partially fractured laminated glass can be well approximated using a 2D plane-stress model with initially predefined cracks, which provides a better estimation than the one-glass-layer limit.

Abstract:Laminated glass fins are often used in glass curtain wall system where they are subjected to in-plane bending. Due to a relatively low edge strength of glass, strengthening of the edge of glass fin becomes necessary. In-pane bending experiments were conducted on the unstrengthened laminated glass fins and the strengthened ones by means of glass plates or stainless steel strips. It was found that the load-carrying capacity was improved (25.6%) similarly for both strengthening approaches while strengthening at only the edges of glass fin appears to be more efficient. Parametric investigations based on the validated finite element models further indicated that such an improvement depends on the composite action between glass fin and strengthening components. It was demonstrated that the composite action was enhanced by increasing the length or deceasing the height of the glass fin, or by decreasing the width or height of the strengthening component. The results obtained are expected to provide valuable information for the design of all-glass curtain wall structures with variable geometries and the improvement of their load carrying capacity.

Abstract:A series of bending tests of thin-walled concrete-filled steel tubes (CFST) were presented in this study. A total of 4 specimens were tested, two square specimens and two rectangular specimens, with width to wall thickness ratio ranging from 50 to 100. The load–displacement curves, failure mode and ultimate capacity of test specimens were obtained. An analytical model was developed for the thin-walled CFSTs subjected to bending. Material properties of confined concrete, corner strength enhancement of cold-formed steel sections, residual stresses and plate local buckling were considered in the developed model. The proposed model was able to predict the behavior and strengths of test specimens with reasonable accuracy. In addition, the suitability of current AISC standard, Eurocode 4 and Han's model for thin-walled CFSTs subjected to bending was also evaluated.
Flexural Behavior of In-Plane Bending Glass Structures for Design Method

Abstract:Experimental study was carried out on the in-plane bending behavior of glass plates without lateral supports, and the effects of the factors, such as height-to-span ratio, on the stability of glass panels were studied. Results show that the in-plane bending glass plates with both ends simply supported and their upper edge free lose overall stability under loads, which belongs to the limit-point type of instability. It is found that the buckling load increases linearly with the increase of height-to-span ratio of the glass plates. The lateral stress of in-plane bending glass plates without lateral supports increases linearly under loads; while the large-area stress increases nonlinearly and the lateral stress is not the controlling factor of instability. In finite element analysis, the first buckling mode is regarded as the initial imperfection and imposed on the model as 1/1000 of the span of the components. The numerical buckling load according to the theory of large deflection is less than the experiment result, which is more conservative and can provide some reference for design. For the design method, when the in-plane load is imposed on the glass plate, its lateral strength and the deflection should be verified. Considering the stability of the in-plane bending glass plate without reliable lateral support, buckling is another possible failure mode and calls for verification.

Abstract:Limited research has been conducted on laser glass bending, with only a few studies to date. In 2008, a CO 2 continuous-wave (CW) laser experiment achieved a maximum bending angle of 24° for a 10 mm wide and 150 μm thick glass sheet. However, challenges persisted in bending thicker and wider glass sheets while reducing permanent material accumulation along the bending axis. In this study, we present a novel approach using a near-infrared CW laser operating at a wavelength of 1070 nm and with a maximum power of 500 W, successfully bending glass with varying thicknesses and widths. Notably, we achieved bending angles of 30°, 60°, and even 90° on soda-lime glass (550 μm thick) and borosilicate glass (1000 μm thick). By integrating an inventive laser bending configuration alongside a complementary scanning strategy, we effectively overcame the challenge of persistent material accumulation during plastic deformation along the bending axis. This advancement enabled us to directly bend 1 mm thick, 13 mm wide borosilicate glass, resulting in a minimal thickness increase of approximately 10 % at a 30-degree bending angle. Furthermore, this approach optimally utilizes laser energy, requiring less than one-third of the laser power typically utilized by existing configurations. Remarkably, we achieved an impressive expansion in the bendable glass width, reaching 25 mm, by implementing a configuration with dual-beam mix processing. This study advances the potential applicability of laser glass bending technology, increasing its possibilities for industries such as manufacturing, optics, and electronics that require curved glass applications.

Abstract:Cold bending is a characteristic of significance for the beautiful curved glass curtain walls, because it affects them in terms of energy-efficiency and cost-efficiency. The increasing engineering projects call for more special studies on the mechanical properties of cold-bent glass panels, especially when the walls are built by insulating glass that is currently widely used while its relevant research is very scarce. This paper is devoted to studying the mechanical properties of anticlastic cold-bent insulating glass while taking different factors into consideration, including glass thickness, cold-bent torsion rate and cavity thickness. 9 pieces of insulating glass were manufactured for anticlastic cold-bending test and their coupled effect with identical load is also studied, and numerical finite element analysis sessions were carried out to simulate the experimental results for each one of them. Further, we analyzed the stress distribution performance of the sample pieces under cold bending and a uniform load, followed by discussions about stress transfer controls in glass plates. The results showed that the cold-bent control stress is on the surface with direct loads from cold bending and close to the cold-bent corner on the short edge, and it is transferred from the parts around the corner to the center when the uniform load plays a leading role in generating stress. This transfer could occur under a relatively small load with a small cold-bent torsion rate. A higher cold-bent torsion rate in cold bending contributed mostly to greater center stress in the glass, and as the glass thickness grows, stress and deflection at the plate center would significantly drop. However, the effect of cavity thickness on the anticlastic mechanical response of insulating glass was found to be trivial.
Enhancing bending performance of ultrathin flexible glass through chemical strengthening

Abstract:Compressive stress, depth of layer and center tensile of UTG with different thickness: (a) CS and DOL; (b) CT. Flexible glass with high bending strength is a remarkable component of flexible electronic displays. However, as a brittle material, its bending properties often do not meet requirements of application. To address this challenge, the application of chemical strengthening stands out as a viable approach to significantly bolster scratch resistance and bending strength in flexible glass. This study focuses on a conventional one‐step chemical strengthening method, employing molten potassium nitrate, to reinforce ultrathin aluminosilicate glass produced through the secondary down‐drawing thermoforming process. Effects of ion‐exchange temperature and time on mechanical properties of strengthened 110 μm flexible glass were investigated, and moreover, properties of strengthened ultrathin flexible glass with various thicknesses were compared. The results indicate that, after chemical strengthening at 380°C for 1 h, the compressive stress (CS) of 110 μm glass reaches 864.60 MPa, and the depth of layer is 15.86 μm, at which time the glass has the best bending performance and scratch resistance, and half of the faceplate spacing during glass breakage can be enhanced from 38.02 ± 2.7 to 8.40 ± 0.62 mm. For ultrathin flexible glass from 40 to 110 μm, after treatment at 380°C for 1 h, the CS of thick glass is higher than that of thin glass, and the enhancement of bending performance is better.

Abstract:Glass is in general brittle and therefore usually cannot sustain large deformation. Recent advances in glass material development as well as micro-mechanical designs, however, are set to defy the conventional wisdom through the demonstration of flexible integrated photonics that can be bent, twisted, and even stretched without compromising its structural integrity and optical performance. In this paper, we review the latest progress in this emerging field, and discuss the rational material and mechanical engineering principles underlying the extraordinary flexibility of these photonic structures. Leveraging these design strategies, we demonstrated bendable chalcogenide glass waveguide circuits, flexible glass waveguide-integrated nanomembrane photodetectors, and stretchable glass photonics.

Abstract:A study on the bending strength of design of thin-walled centrifugal concrete-filled steel tubes was conducted in this study.An accurate finite element model of centrifugal concrete-filled steel tubes was developed using the finite element program ABAQUS.Centrifugal concrete-filled steel tubes different cross sections and material properties were simulated in this study.The nonlinear finite element model was verified against the experimental results.Generally the finite element model could accurately simulate the bending strength of centrifugal concrete-filled steel tubes.Parametric study was conducted to investigate specimens having concrete tubes of different grades.Current AISC standard was used to predict the bending strength of thin-walled centrifugal concrete-filled steel tubes and empirical design equations are also proposed for simplicity.It is shown that the proposed method predicted the bending strength of thin-walled centrifugal concrete-filled steel tubes well.
An Experimental Study on the Structural Behaviour of Laminated Glass Members under Combined Axial Compression and In-Plane Bending

Abstract:Laminated glass (LG) is increasingly being used as load carrying components in modern buildings thanks to its relatively good safety performance and aesthetic benefits. This paper presents an experimental study into the applicational scenario of structural LG beam-columns subjected to combined axial compression and in-plane bending, such as LG fins supporting glass facade. The investigated LG specimens consisted of annealed float glass plies bonded together by SentryGlas interlayer. A total of 17 tests were carried out, from which the structural behaviour in terms of load carrying capacity, failure mode, post-breakage strength and deformability of the LG beam-columns were investigated in detail. Through the tests, the failure modes and corresponding mechanisms were identified; the influence of axial compression, laminate number and slenderness ratio on the structural behaviour were assessed; and the major stress components resulting in fracture of glass were analyzed. Based on the test and analytical results, a design N–M interaction domain was proposed to facilitate strength checking of LG beam-columns, and recommendations were made to improve the post-breakage performance. The results obtained are expected to provide supplementary information that is currently lacking in existing literature.
Enhancing the design bending strength of new and aged glass with a functional coating

Abstract:Annealed glass is susceptible to stress corrosion. This stress corrosion phenomenon, also known as static fatigue, embodies a reduction of the tensile strength due to the combined presence of applied tension stress and humidity. As a consequence, the effective strength of annealed glass members in building construction is limited. According to the classical theory developed to account for this phenomenology and to previous experiences published in the literature, stress corrosion can be prevented by avoiding the interaction between water molecules and the silica network. In the present work an innovative polymeric coating cured by UV radiation is applied to the surface of glass specimens to prevent stress corrosion. This coating is suitable to constitute a barrier between humidity and glass surface, thus increasing the reliability of new glass structures and their resistance to long-term loads, due to a compositional profile that maximizes hydrophobicity and water vapor barrier on the air side and adhesive properties on the substrate side. Coating effectiveness is assessed experimentally in terms of load-carrying capacity of coated plates tested under equibiaxial bending conditions with the coaxial double ring setup. New and naturally aged glasses are analyzed. The results evidence an increase of the design bending strength between 60 and 90% with respect to the strength of un-coated glass.
Simulation of the Crack Resistance of Ion-Exchange Strengthened Silicate Glass Subject to Bending Strain

Abstract:The crack resistance of ion-exchange strengthened sheet silicate glass under bending strains is analyzed numerically using finite-element software for studying the thermal stress state of structures. The results show that the fracture of real sheet glass under tensile stresses during bending depends on crack-like surface defects. If the depth of the zone of compressive stresses from ion-exchange strengthening is much less than the depth of the surface crack, the glass strength slightly depends on the maximum compressive stresses on the surface. The ion-exchange strengthening effect becomes much stronger with decrease in the surface crack depth. The proposed method allows solving important practical problems of the destruction of multilayer aircraft glassworks with internal defects and selecting optimal methods for eliminating such defects.

Abstract:Abstract Laminated glass beams without metallic or polymeric reinforcements generally lack post-breakage strength and ductility. This paper aims to perform a comparative study by testing five different fully transparent laminated glass beam designs in order to see how parameters such as the number and thickness of glass sheets (3 x 10 mm or 5 x 6 mm), the interlayer material (PVB Clear or SentryGlas), and the thermal treatment of glass (annealed or heat-strengthened) affect the pre-breakage performance and post-breakage safety. A buckling analysis is also performed using a numerical model with ABAQUS CAE. The study includes a comparison between the results of different experimental mechanical tests on laminated glass beams, including the tests presented in this paper, as well as other tests found in the literature. All designs presented a linear elastic behaviour until initial breakage. The interlayer material mainly affected the crack shape of laminated glass beams. Beams with five sheets of annealed glass had a more progressive breakage, and therefore a safer behaviour, than beams with three sheets of annealed or heat-strengthened glass.

Abstract:Since the slenderness ratio of the laminated glass columns is generally high, they are vulnerable to flexural buckling under compression. The laminated glass column with elastic lateral restraint is a feasible way to improve the stability of the column, which is widely used in engineering, such as glass fins laterally restrained by glass panels via adhesive. However, existing research on the behavior of this type of glass columns is still lacking. This paper presents a study on the buckling behavior of laminated glass columns with elastic lateral restraint under axial compression. Based on the experimental and analytical studies, the influences of adhesive and glass column size on the buckling resistance of the glass columns were studied in detail. In addition, the shear modulus and strength of structural silicone adhesive were obtained based on the test results. Finally, considering glass crack and adhesive failure, the practical engineering design methods were proposed for the laminated glass columns carrying axial loads. By comparison with test results, the reliability of the proposed design methods is validated.

Abstract:Bending tests were carried out on 4-point-supported laminated glass units with various layerthickness, and the stresses and displacements during loading were measured. A long period test lasting for 100-hour helped to study the development of displacement. This paper also used finite element method to simulate and verify the test results. The study demonstrates that neglecting the PVB layer's shear-resisting effect will lead to conservative design. PVB interlayer's shearing modulus changes with load duration and temperature, and the shearing deformation should be accounted for in design. Economic design could be made based on the laminate unit's shearing modulus' value.
Indentation fracture and toughness assessment for thin optical coatings on glass

Abstract:The different indentation fracture mechanisms of coated glass caused by a sharp tip ( cube corner) at low loads (< 4 mN) and a blunt tip ( Berkovich) at high loads ( up to 500 mN) have been analysed in this study. Existing indentation methods to estimate fracture toughness are unsuitable for very thin coatings (< 500 nm). An alternative energy-based method can successfully be applied in the assessment of the ultra-small cracks produced in coated glass based on excursions in the load-displacement curve caused by indentation with a sharp tip. However, it was found that no excursions were observed associated with picture-frame cracks produced by a blunt tip in the same coatings; this is not unusual in other coated systems and makes the existing energy-based models invalid. Therefore, a new energy-based model is developed here to solve this problem and good results have been obtained.
