Abstract:The purpose of the study is to review research trends of information literacy instruction by analyzing 118 journal articles published in the library and information science field in Korea. The study first categorized the literature by year, journal title, type of library, type of researcher, and topic. Then, it analyzed the contents of the literature by 8 sub-topics. The study found that in terms of types of libraries, school libraries were the most frequently studied, and in terms of topics, program development. Research about public libraries was scarce. Based on the findings, the study proposed future directions of research in the information literacy instruction area.

Abstract:Amidst the epoch of immense data, accompanied by the burgeoning prevalence of investigations into data literacy and the educational aspects thereof, various university libraries have also begun to learn from successful experiences abroad and conduct scientific research on data literacy education. In the realm of information technology, the focal point of research has shifted towards the burgeoning prominence of data literacy education, but the theoretical and practical research on data literacy is relatively weak and insufficient, and more detailed research is needed to address the existing problems. The article reviews the research on data literacy both domestically and internationally, focusing on cultivating readers' data awareness, developing reasonable teaching content, constructing a data literacy teaching system and integrating data literacy resource platforms, and building a professional and efficient data literacy teaching team. The article explores the optimization methods for reader data literacy education.
A comparative study of public libraries’ contribution to digital inclusion in Korea and the United States

Abstract:This research was designed to measure the level of contribution public libraries in Korea have made to digital inclusion in their communities. To that end, the study compared the degree of contribution to digital inclusion by Korean libraries with that by US libraries. Specifically, the following domains of digital inclusion were assessed: (1) information technologies and infrastructures that can be utilized by the users, as well as (2) digital literacy campaigns and programs that promoted digital integration (helping people to use technologies and library programs and know about other resources and events provided by libraries). Public libraries in Korea were surveyed using a questionnaire developed by the Institute of Museum and Library Service in the United States – FY2011 Public Library Survey, revised for the Korean context. From a systems perspective, Korean public library computers and Internet infrastructure surpassed those of their counterparts in the United States in terms of quality but the diversity of technologies, equipment, and technology-related services and the proportion of technology-related services provided were higher in the United States. In terms of educational content, libraries in both countries informed the public about diverse subjects but US libraries offered more, and more diverse, services than Korean. Library staff were responsible for running programs in the United States, whereas these were provided through collaboration with external organizations in Korea.

Abstract:The article is devoted to the analysis of information literacy programmes developed by libraries of higher education institutions in Hong Kong and Ukraine. The application of such theoretical and empirical methods as an analysis of sources, the method of external observation over the foreign and Ukrainian experience of the information literacy programmes developing, as well as a prognostic method for summarising, allowed to reveal similarities and differences in the content and forms of information literacy programmes implemented at Hong Kong and Ukrainian universities. Different stages of implementation of information literacy programmes by the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Library during the last two decades are highlighted. The content of information literacy programmes provided by the libraries of 4 Ukrainian universities in general and the scientific library of the Kyiv National University of Culture and Arts (KNUCaA), in particular, is reviewed. It has been found out such similar characteristics of information literacy programmes of libraries that were analysed as using of traditional forms (lectures, practical exercises, instructions, video lessons) to form the skills and abilities for the effective information search, analytical processing, organisation, evaluation, and use of this information. It has been found out that, unlike Hong Kong, the introduction of certified and online information literacy courses by Ukrainian universities libraries is isolated cases. There is also no experience in testing students’ knowledge before studies of information literacy. Testing is usually done after completing the information literacy programmes, but these tests are not mandatory and only recommended. The authors hope that the experience of the CUHK Library (Hong Kong) in the implementation of the “Immersion Programme”, the UGCIL project, and InfoLit for U will be useful for the Ukrainian scientific library community, considering that libraries of higher education institutions in Ukraine have also started to develop similar programmes and modules. In particular, the interactive online guide “Music Documents in the KNUCaA Scientific Library” is an example of a modern approach to the formation of first-year students’ information literacy, their acquaintance with the scientific library, its services, and resources, basic types of documents, an electronic search algorithm.

Abstract:Purpose– The purpose of this study is to examine and compare the different roles and expectations of the school librarians as information literacy (IL) instructors between Hong Kong, Japan, Shanghai, South Korea, and Taipei. School librarians are not merely managers of the school libraries nowadays; they are also expected to serve as administrators, teaching consultants, information specialists and IL teachers, etc. Unfortunately, in many countries, especially in Asia, there has always been a lack of understanding on the parts of the classroom teachers and school administration about their role as IL specialists in the public school system.Design/methodology/approach– The school librarians in Hong Kong, Japan, Shanghai, South Korea and Taipei were invited to take part in a questionnaire survey. A total number of 466 self-completed questionnaires were collected from all 5 regions.Findings– The results indicated that the school librarians in both Taipei and South Korea outperformed the other regions, in terms of the scope and extent of duties and responsibilities these school librarians undertook as IL skills instructors. The staffing and organizational structures amongst the school libraries in Taipei also tended to be far more affluent and “departmentalized” in comparison to the other four regions. Results also indicated that the amount of IL instructions carried out by the school librarians were directly proportional to the frequencies of collaborations the school librarians carried out with other subject teachers as well as the extent the librarians themselves could contribute to the curriculum as both information consultants and curriculum facilitators. Finally, the amount and level of reference duties performed by these school librarians for supporting the teaching of other subject teachers was another factor contributing to the overall success of IL instructions programmes being carried out.Originality/value– The complex interactions of global trend and local responses in education system cannot easily be understood without the use of comparative studies (Arnove and Torres, 1999). The value of comparative studies lies in its potentials in highlighting the strengths and deficiencies of the education systems being examined and thereby identifying valuable features of both foreign and local systems, as well as exposing defects for necessary improvements. Nevertheless, there has been a lack of cross-regional comparative research on IL programmes carried out via school libraries in East Asia. This study aims to provide a cross-analysis of empirical data collected in five different regions in East Asia for examining the issues of the role of the school librarians as IL skills specialists, by looking at their relationships with other colleagues as well as their role as curriculum facilitator within the school community as a whole.

Abstract:Purpose Information literacy is defined as discrete abilities that a person requires to have in order to find, assess, use and share information. As information literacy skills play a prominent role in the students' academic achievement, students and in particular international students coming to continue their postgraduate studies in other countries may face problems in finding and using library services. The purpose of this paper is to explore and investigate the information literacy skills, challenges and needs of international and domestic students at the Finnish universities. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses a mixed-methods design. Quantitative data were collected through an online survey (82 respondents) and qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 10 international and 10 domestic students. Findings Academic library services are used but in different ways. The findings indicate that international students have a relatively low level of information literacy skills compared to domestic students and faces various challenges, especially in the beginning of their studies. Research limitations/implications The study was exploratory, and data were collected from limited number of Finnish universities and may not be representative of the underlying population. Practical implications Academic libraries should provide effective courses on research methods and library services to the international students while keeping in mind the international students language and cultural barriers. Originality/value This is one of the first attempts in information literacy research that focusses on international and domestic students' information literacy skills at the higher education environment. As such, the results provided in this paper can help librarians and decision-makers at the higher education environments to plan better and become more efficient in delivering information services meeting students' information needs and expectations.

Abstract:The context of Europe and the ASEAN countries highlights a parallel growth of the concept of information literacy and the diversity of policies to solve information literacy issues. The comparative study aims to understand the influence of policies for the teaching of information literacy in universities in Italy and Thailand and was based on a theoretical framework built by international literature. The data was collected from the analysis of literature and web documentation in Italy and Thailand. The comparative analysis shows that the concept of information literacy has had a similar growth but the influence of policies for teaching information literacy in higher education is different in Italy and Thailand and still in continuous development. The results show that one element of success is the integration of information literacy into the higher education curriculum.

Abstract:<p>Information literacy is an essential proficiency for success in academic studies, yet many first-year students find it hard to use information sources efficiently and to develop academic information literacy. This study reports findings from first-year students' self-estimation of their information skills according to two information literacy models (Shapiro & Hughes, 1996; Ng, 2012) and presents interesting insights on the differences between the multicultural and multilingual student groups in the study's population. The researchers found that Hebrew-native speaking students preferred digital sources while Hebrew as second language (Arabic-speaking) students preferred printed sources, and both groups ranked their technological and information literacy skills as above average. The study supports previous research on Arabic-speaking students' need for more mediation in the dimensions of information literacy examined compared to Hebrew-speaking students, despite no significant difference in access to the internet at home and self-assessment of their general computing skills.</p>

Abstract:In the context of the digital transformation of education, the cultivation of students' information technology ability and literacy has become a key topic of attention in educational reform. Information awareness requires students to have a certain ability to obtain information and information resolution, which is a necessary key ability for students in the "Internet plus" era. In order to explore the current development status of information awareness literacy in China and grasp its future development trends, the scientific knowledge graph analysis method was adopted to sort out the research results of Chinese researchers in the field of student information awareness literacy in the past decade. Through visual analysis and literature reading, it was found that research on information awareness literacy focuses on the cultivation of core literacy and the study of cultivation strategies, and there is relatively little research on its own. The demand for student information sensitivity and resolution will become increasingly high in the future, so research on information awareness literacy should receive more attention from people.

Abstract:While acknowledging that efforts in information literacy are a global, the paper concentrates on information literacy efforts in the USA. The American Library Association (ALA) issued in year 2000 a set of standards that provided a framework for assessing the information literate individual. By 2013 it was realized that many changes require an update and even new approaches to information literacy. At the start of 2014 ALA proposed an initial draft of a new framework for information literacy for higher education. A new definition of information literacy was offered, together with a new framework based on threshold concepts– critically reviewed in the paper. During 2014 several public debates were conducted; the new framework is scheduled to be finalized in 2015. The paper summarizes these debates, with particular emphasis of description and critiques of threshold concept, which is at the core of the new framework.

Abstract:This study investigated the influence of information literacy (IL) skills on students' information seeking behaviour and lifelong learning skills in Higher Educational institutions in Ghana, with particular reference to the University of Cape Coast (UCC). Using a mixed method approach, 278 students from the College of Education Studies, UCC were sampled for the study. The components of the American College and Research Library (ACRL) model was used to measure the information literacy competence level of the students. A content and bibliographic evaluation of students' research projects were conducted using document analysis. Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient was used to determine the association between information literacy skills and information seeking behaviour of students from data collected through questionnaires, interviews and document analysis. The results revealed that respondents had developed substantial skills in information literacy and lifelong learning skills and thus adopted positive attitudes in information seeking. The paper concludes that majority of the students were confident users of information. The study recommends that academic libraries should make available a wide array of information sources and deliberately run programmes to introduce students to those information sources as a way of building their competency levels in information literacy.

Abstract:Although the perceptions of library user education of academic libraries has been studied in a general context, specific studies on perspective of library and information science students are relatively few, especially in the context of Asia. Filling this research gap is particularly important because it affects the experiential learning of these pre-professionals, and shapes future library user education directions. As such, this study aims at understanding and comparing the views and perceptions of library user education programs in Greater China from the perspective of library and information science students. A total number 305 questionnaire survey responses were collected from three different universities in Greater China, namely: The University of Hong Kong (HKU), National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), and Peking University (PKU). Results from this survey study reveal high evaluations of library user education programs and library user education librarians as a whole, as well as possible ways for librarians to better promote such programs. Such ratings are attributed to findings from previous studies on why students choose librarianship as a career, as well as the importance of experiential learning embedded in the Library and Information Science programs at each university. Findings of this study also suggest that as pre-professionals (soon-to-be professional librarians), these student respondents recognize the values behind library user education as an important part of their overall learning practices. Results from this study will be useful in identifying how future library professionals in Greater China perceive library user education programs, and librarians – therefore potentially helping librarians improve the delivery of these services.

Abstract:Objectives This study looks at the university information disclosure system between Korea and the United States, and secure the possibility of using individual variants from the viewpoint of Institutional Research(IR). Methods As a representative university information disclosure system for this purpose, This study uses Korean University Alert and the US Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System(IPEDS) and examines individual university variables. It examines the disclosed pre-classification criteria and visualizes data centered on key performance indicators on the websites. Results University Alert has students, faculty/research, educational conditions, university management, industry-university cooperation, and budgeting/closing as standards. IPEDS has Institutional Characteristics and Student Charges, Admissions and Test Scores, Fall enrollment, Completions, Outcome Measures, Student Financial Aid, Human Resource, and Academic Library as standards. detailed university variables are provided. In addition, while university alert has the cahracteristics of government-centered perspectives on data collection, provision, and print, However, IPEDs has more student-towarded approach such as educational cost, backgrounds, and retention information. Based on this, the results of Korea-US comparative analysis of key university information presented in 13 major fields in 4 areas, including students, faculty/research, finance, and educational conditions, were presented. Conclusions TThe results of the study show that efforts for integrated data collection and visualization are necessary for analyzing the effectiveness of university education. This can be used as a reference not only for related researchers but also for future students and parents who are consumers of the university. It implies that those website will be used as a major resource for data-based decision-making by policy makers.

Abstract:This study assesses the information literacy skills of a sample of undergraduate teacher education students, as measured by the iSkills assessment, and aims to determine student demographic and academic characteristics that may predict success on this assessment. The study repeats the methodology of a study of first-year students at the same institution two years before in order to provide insight into the information literacy proficiency of future teachers. Using hierarchical multiple regression analysis, transfer credits were found to be a statistically significant predictor of higher iSkills performance. Results are also discussed in the context of the recent adoption of the ACRL Framework for Literacy for Higher Education.

Abstract:Digital inequality is one of the most critical issues in the “information age”, few studies have examined the social inequality in information resources and digital use patterns. In the rural areas, such information communication technology (ICT) facilities could not guarantee that users can easily access information technology and overcome the so-called “digital divide.” This research aims to discover the psychological factors that influence information and communication technology (ICT) adoption behavior, as well as confirm whether “information literacy” and “digital skills” have moderator effects in the research model. Using a survey of 875 participants and a structural equation modeling approach, we find that task characteristics and social interaction improve media richness, media experience, and media technostress, which in turn enhance ICT adoption behavior. The proposed theoretical model shows that the impact of ICT adoption behavior is moderated by information literacy and digital skills. The findings of this research can offer guidelines for policy makers and educators who evaluate a community's ICT adoption behavior so as to provide proper access to ICT and promote its visibility by incorporating ICT in educational activities.

Abstract:With the continuous development of information technology, the Internet has become an important way for college students to obtain information and make interpersonal communication, especially in today's era of high human rights and comprehensive informatisation, what is the information literacy level of college students, and how to effectively improve the information literacy of college students is a problem that needs to be solved in the digital era of the present time. Of course, this also puts forward higher requirements for college students' information literacy education, and also highlights the importance of information literacy. Based on the above background, this paper analyses the current evaluation index system related to information literacy through the literature research method, and designs and develops a suitable information literacy assessment system for college students based on the evaluation index system, so as to provide scientific and accurate assessment for college students' information literacy ability, which is more conducive to the enhancement of college students' information literacy ability.

Abstract:Information literacy skills (ILS) have increasingly become indispensable in the higher education landscape largely due to the explosion of information which is generated by the Internet and a myriad of information communication technologies (ICTs). Known differently as bibliographic instruction, user education, user instruction, library instruction, instruction services, and libraries and learning, ILS boasts of an impressive history spanning more than ten decades during which a considerable body of multidisciplinary literature has been generated. However, although the impressive contributions of ILS are self-evident, bibliometric studies focusing exclusively on Sub-Saharan African contexts are scarce. Consequently, there is a limited understanding of how ILS are taught in the broader African institutions of higher learning landscape. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine how this core skill is taught in the African context. The study employed bibliometric analysis and review methods to explore the profile and research trends in information literacy skills in African universities and higher education institutions. Data were collected from the Web of Science database‟s core collection from 1990-2021 (31 years) using a variety of search strategies. Data were analysed through Web of Science‟s Clarivate Analytics and some data were exported to Microsoft Excel to produce images and graphs. The findings of the study revealed: the year 2020 with the most publications; the University of South Africa the most productive research institution; E. E. Baro, the most prolific author in writing on IL; the most research productive country Nigeria; the most dominant publishing outlet journals and the most citations were received in the year 2020.
