Abstract:This paper predicting Trump victory has been submitted before the election and revised after, allowing to add a Foreword and Note Added in Revision to discuss in details the causes of the failure of the prediction. In 2016, Trump was unanimously seen as the loser in the November 8 election. In contrast, using a model of opinion dynamics I have been developing for a few decades within the framework of sociophysics, I predicted his victory against all odds. According to the model, the winning paradoxical martingale of 2016, has been Trump capability to activate frozen prejudices in many voters by provoking their real indignation. However, four year later, Trump shocking outings do not shock anymore, they became devitalized, losing their ability to generate major emotional reactions. Does this mean that this time around he will lose the 2020 election against Biden, as nearly all analysts, pundits and commentators still predict? No, because with frozen prejudices remaining frozen, the spontaneous prejudices will be activated but this time they will benefit to both Biden and Trump. The main ones are the fear of the other candidate policy and the personal stand facing a danger. In addition, Trump presidency having polarized a large part of American voters into narrow-minded anti-Trump and narrow-minded pro-Trump, those I denote in my model as inflexibles, will be driving the dynamics of choices. Both effects, prejudices and inflexibles can either compete or cooperate making their local combination within each state, decisive to determine the faith of the state election. As a result, tiny differences can make the outcome. Based on my rough estimates of associated proportions of inflexibles and prejudices, the model predicts Trump victory in the 2020 November election.

Abstract:A number of models and techniques has been proposed for predicting the outcomes of presidential elections. Some of them use information on the socio-economical status of a country, others focus on candidates' popularity measures in news media. We employ a computational social science approach, utilising public reactions in social media to real-life events that involve presidential candidates. Contrary to the popular approach, we do not analyse public emotions but ethotic references to the character of politicians which allows us to analyse how much they are (dis-)trusted by the general public, hence the name of the tool we developed: Trust Analytics (TrustAn). Similarly to major news media's polls, we observe a tight race between Harris and Trump with week to week changes in the level of trust and distrust towards the two candidates. Using the ratio between the level of trust and distrust towards them and changes of this metric in time, we predict Donald Trump as the winner of the US 2024 elections.

Abstract:In the months leading up to political elections in the United States, forecasts are widespread and take on multiple forms, including projections of what party will win the popular vote, state ratings, and predictions of vote margins at the state level. It can be challenging to evaluate how accuracy changes in the lead up to Election Day or to put probabilistic forecasts into historical context. Moreover, forecasts differ between analysts, highlighting the many choices in the forecasting process. With this as motivation, here we take a more comprehensive view and begin to unpack some of the choices involved in election forecasting. Building on a prior compartmental model of election dynamics, we present the forecasts of this model across months, years, and types of race. By gathering together monthly forecasts of presidential, senatorial, and gubernatorial races from 2004--2022, we provide a larger-scale perspective and discuss how treating polling data in different ways affects forecast accuracy. We conclude with our 2024 election forecasts (upcoming at the time of writing).

Impact of the US Presidential Race on the German Economy: Insights from Professional Forecasters

Abstract:This policy brief analyses German professional forecasters’ views on the upcoming US presidential election in November 2024 and its impact on the German economy. Our analysis is based on recent data from the ZEW's Financial Market Survey (Finanzmarkttest, FMT), a long-standing survey of financial market experts and professional forecasters in Germany. The FMT is well-known for producing the ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment, one of the most important indicators for the German economy. For our analysis, we first asked respondents to assess the likelihood of a Trump victory, conditional on several events that may affect the election outcome. Next, we elicited scenario-based forecasts for German GDP growth and inflation over the upcoming president’s tenure, depending on whether Trump or Harris wins the election. To better understand the differences in the conditional macroeconomic expectations, we asked the panellists which candidate they thought is more likely to achieve certain economic or political outcomes. Lastly, we included an open-ended question on possible measures the German government could take now to protect the German economy from potential adverse effects of the next US president’s policies.

Abstract:Despite research on the accuracy of polls as tools for forecasting presidential elections, we lack an assessment of how accurately the ANES, arguably the most used survey in political science, measures aggregate vote intention relative to the actual election results. Our ANES 1952–2020 results indicate that the reported vote from the post-election surveys accurately measures the actual vote (e.g., it is off by 2.23 percentage points, on average). Moreover, the intended vote measure from the pre-election surveys reasonably accurately predicts the actual aggregate popular vote outcome. While outliers may exist, they do not appear to come from variations in the survey mode, sample weights, time, political party, or turnout. We conclude that political scientists can confidently use the intended vote measure, keeping in mind that forecasting the popular vote may not always reveal the actual winner.

Abstract:Political polarisation in the United States offers opportunities to explore how beliefs about candidates – that they could save or destroy American society – impact people's thoughts, feelings, and behaviour. Participants forecast their future emotional responses to the contentious 2020 U.S. presidential election, and reported their actual responses after the election outcome. Stronger beliefs about candidates were associated with forecasts of greater emotion in response to the election, but the strength of this relationship differed based on candidate preference. Trump supporters' forecast happiness more strongly related to beliefs that their candidate would save society than for Biden supporters. Biden supporters' forecast anger and fear were more strongly related to beliefs that Trump would destroy society than vice versa. These forecasts mattered: predictions of lower happiness and greater anger if the non-preferred candidate won predicted voting, with Biden supporters voting more than Trump supporters. Generally, participants forecast more emotion than they experienced, but beliefs altered this tendency. Stronger beliefs predicted experiencing more happiness or more anger and fear about the election outcome than had been forecast. These findings have implications for understanding the mechanisms through which political polarisation and rhetoric can influence voting behaviour.

Abstract:<p>Forecasting election results has been a highly attractive activity among political and social scientists. Different forecasting methods have been proposed, but those based on public opinion polls are the most common. However, there are challenges to using opinion polls, especially because they neglect undecided voters. Due to the significant number of undecided participants and their impact on voting outcomes, we analyze the potential behavior of undecided voters by considering opinion polls and sentiment based on voter expectation from the perspective of the bandwagon effect and the spiral of silence. We establish a hierarchical Bayesian forecasting model to predict voting results, and apply it to the 2016 United States presidential election and the 2016 Brexit referendum. The results of our model suggest that voting outcomes are more predictable when fully utilizing the impact of undecided voters. The results indicate that integrating aggregated polls into the hierarchical Bayesian framework is a strong predictor for forecasting outcomes, and they provide evidence for the influence of sentiment based on voter expectation in forecasting election results.</p>

Minute-by-Minute: Financial Markets' Reaction to the 2020 U.S. Election

Abstract:We find striking correlations between the presidential election outcome probability and major financial indicators, including USD currency pairs, bond prices, stock index futures, and a market volatility measure. The correlations are consistent with 'risk-on' behavior in markets, a term which describes investors moving toward riskier asset classes, as the election results became clearer. Further, we decompose the market reaction into a 'reduction in uncertainty' component and a 'probability of a Democratic party presidency' component. This decomposition reveals how markets reacted to the increasing certainty of the outcome as election results came in. Finally, we analyze the differing market reactions to the presidential election and the Senate election, including data from the unique Georgia runoffs, and demonstrate that bond prices were particularly sensitive to the probability of a combined Democratic Senate and Presidency.

Abstract:There certainly is little or no doubt that politicians, sometimes consciously and sometimes not, exert a significant impact on stock markets. The evolving volatility over the Republican Donald Trump's surprise victory in the US presidential election is a perfect example when politicians, through announced policies, send signals to financial markets. The present paper seeks to address whether BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) stock markets equally vulnerable to Trump's plans. For this purpose, two methods were adopted. The first presents an event-study methodology based on regression estimation of abnormal returns. The second is based on vote intentions by integrating data from social media (Twitter), search queries (Google Trends) and public opinion polls. Our results robustly reveal that although some markets emerged losers, others took the opposite route. China took the biggest hit with Brazil, while the damage was much more limited for India and South Africa. These adverse responses can be explained by the Trump's neo-mercantilist attitude revolving around tearing up trade deals, instituting tariffs, and labeling China a "currency manipulator". However, Russia looks to be benefiting due to Trump's sympathetic attitude towards Vladimir Putin and expectations about the scaling down of sanctions imposed on Russia over its role in the conflict in Ukraine.

Abstract:The study of US-China relations has always been a crucial topic in our economic development [4][5][7], and the US presidential election plays an integral role in shaping these relations. The presidential election is held every four years, and it is crucial to assess the impact of the 2020 election on China to prepare for the potential effects of the 2024 US presidential election on the Chinese economy [8][16][20]. To achieve this, we have gathered statistical data from nearly 70 years and analyzed data related to the US economy. We have classified the collected data and utilized the analytic hierarchy process [1][2][3] to evaluate the President's policy implementation.This approach allowed us to obtain a comprehensive ranking of the indicators [6][9][11][33]. We then quantified the index data and employed the entropy weight method to calculate the weight of each index data. Finally, we used the weighted total score calculation to evaluate the economic status of the United States in a hierarchical manner after the election of Presidents Trump and Biden [15][18]. We optimized the index system by incorporating additional dimension indexes such as "foreign policy". We then crawled China's specific development data from 1990-2020 and substituted it into the model for analysis and evaluation. This enabled us to obtain detailed quantitative index data of the degree of influence [10][12][14]. To address China's shortcomings in science and technology innovation, we recommend strengthening economic cooperation with developed countries, diversifying market development, and actively expanding the domestic market through feasible solutions [13][16][23][36].

Abstract:The strongly polarizing political discourse in the U. S. implies that a small minority of the population, determining the outcome of the presidential elections in a few so called battleground-states, also determines the outcome of the overall election. Given the almost equal distributions of the electoral college members in the so-called blue and red states, the members elected from these battleground states would determine the election results. We build a kinetic exchange opinion model that takes into account the dynamical nature of the opinions of the individuals in the battleground states and the already determined core voters of the non-battleground states. In a fully connected graph, we consider the interaction among the population in the battleground states while the agents in the non-battleground states are assumed to have fixed opinions. We provide the analytical results and numerical simulations using realistic parameters from the opinion poll of the previous election's data. Counter-intuitively, a more noisy environment predicts a higher chance of the Democrats' win.

Abstract:One major sub-domain in the subject of polling public opinion with social media data is electoral prediction. Electoral prediction utilizing social media data potentially would significantly affect campaign strategies, complementing traditional polling methods and providing cheaper polling in real-time. First, this paper explores past successful methods from research for analysis and prediction of the 2020 US Presidential Election using Twitter data. Then, this research proposes a new method for electoral prediction which combines sentiment, from NLP on the text of tweets, and structural data with aggregate polling, a time series analysis, and a special focus on Twitter users critical to the election. Though this method performed worse than its baseline of polling predictions, it is inconclusive whether this is an accurate method for predicting elections due to scarcity of data. More research and more data are needed to accurately measure this method's overall effectiveness.

Abstract:Using stock market and economic data from 1900 to 2008 from 27 separate presidential administrations in the United States (U.S.), including 15 Republican and 12 Democratic, this paper examines the relationships between the market return after each Election Day and economic performance during the presidential term. Using the theoretical framework of political economy, the authors examine how Wall Streets reaction to a presidential election acts as a predictive measure of future economic performance. The analysis shows that the after-election market movement has progressively been more accurate in predicting the future Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth but not the future unemployment rates. Given that the results show a higher correlation over time, the model appears to provide a good starting point for judging the economic potential of future presidential administrations.

Abstract:U.S. Presidential Election forecasting has been a research interest for several decades. Currently, election prediction consists of two main approaches: traditional models that incorporate economic data and poll surveys, and models that leverage Twitter (or X) and other social media platforms due to their increasing popularity in the past decade. However, traditional approaches have predominantly focused on national-level predictions, while social media-based approaches often oversimplify the nuanced differences between online discourse and the broader voting population's political landscape. In this work, we perform a hybrid method of both the machine learning algorithm and the sentiment analysis on the state level with various independent variables including census data, economic indicators, polling averages, and the newly defined average sentiment scores from Twitter. Our prediction for the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election yielded promising results. Most of our models successfully predicted a victory for the Democratic candidate with 96% accuracy using Gradient Boosting Trees and Multi-Layer Perceptron algorithms. This novel prediction framework addresses the limitations of existing U.S. Presidential Election forecasting approaches, particularly in terms of state-level predictions. It provides a valuable foundation for future research in this field and contributes to advancing our understanding of election dynamics.

Abstract:The article discusses in details the first stage of the US 2024 election campaign. The organization and the process of primaries is analyzed. The present election campaign became special since two presidents – the present (Joe Biden) and his predecessor (Donald Trump) play the key roles in the fight for the White House. By mid-March, many months before the party conventions, they gained the support of the majority of the delegates. The article recognizes ethnic, racial, gender and religious differences between the two parties. It also deals with potential influence of third candidates, in particular Robert Kennedy junior. The prospects for Congressional elections are discussed. The conclusion is that in a widely divided American society the elections may result in a huge political confrontation.

Abstract:During the 2016 election, Donald Trump was characterized by his simple, pompous and repetitive language. However, studies have shown that sometimes he does not speak the way he used to. Critical discourse analysis suggests that political discourse analysis should include both the characterization of the text and the systematic description of the context. Thus, this study intends to evaluate stylistic features of Donald Trump’s political discourse based on the evolution over time as well as the genre variation by employing a comparison between Obama, Clinton and Trump. Results show that in debates, Trump uses less diverse vocabulary and simpler sentences. In campaign speeches, nonetheless, along with the change of circumstances, he sometimes employed a richer vocabulary and well-edited sentences. In addition, Trump’s speeches contain relatively more central themes in his campaign speeches. His concentration on political themes may meet key interests of a large proportion of electorates.
