Abstract:Varying ambient light may cause serious decorrelation effect in the images recorded using an ordinary optical imaging device, which prevent digital image correlation (DIC) from out-of-laboratory use. In this paper, we describe an easy-to-implement yet effective monochromatic light illuminated active imaging DIC method for obtaining high-quality images suitable for high fidelity deformation measurement. Experiments reveal that the active imaging DIC method is able to provide reliable and accurate measurements even though the ambient light has been seriously changed. The active imaging DIC method is promising for developing flexible and robust in situ deformation measurement systems for use in both laboratory and non-laboratory environment, and should therefore have more potential engineering applications.

Abstract:Application of digital image correlation (DIC) method to determination of in-situ dynamic strain is presented in this study. Firstly, an integrative software is programmed based on the DIC algorithms and point-wise least-squares fitting technique. Then, simulated speckle images are generated to study the computational accuracy of this software. The experimental setup and procedures for measuring in-situ dynamic strain through both DIC and strain gauge are proposed. The DIC results are close to those measured by strain gauge. This fact reveals that DIC is a practical and effective tool for in-situ dynamic strain measurement. Finally, the full-field in-situ dynamic strain of another specimen is measured by DIC, and the overall distribution of the strain in the measurement area is clearly shown.

Abstract:Digital Image Correlation (DIC) has been widely used as a non-contact deformation measurement technique. Nevertheless, its accuracy is greatly affected by the speckle pattern on the specimen. To systematically evaluate how speckle deformability affects the precision of DIC algorithms. In this study, a test dataset of 2D speckle patterns with various prescribed deformation fields was numerically generated, containing two categories of speckles, i.e., the deformable and the non-deformable (rigid) ones. This dataset was used to evaluate the performance of inverse compositional Gauss-Newton (ICGN)-based DIC algorithms with two types of shape function (first-order and second-order), in the different scenarios of the deformation field. The results showed that imaging noise had a significant influence on the DIC algorithm. The first-order shape function (ICGN-1) performed better when tracking the simple linear deformation field. While the second-order shape function (ICGN-2) was proved to perform better on non-linear deformations. Moreover, the deformability of the speckle was found to have an obvious impact on the performance of the DIC algorithm. ICGN-2 could effectively reduce so-called speckle rigidity induced (SRI) error. Conclusively, ICGN-2 should be chosen as priority, because of its feasibility on non-linear deformation fields and speckle rigidity. While in the linear deformation scenarios, ICGN-1 was still a robust and efficient method.

Improved Digital Image Correlation For Light Source Variation

Abstract:The Newton-Rapshon(N-R) algorithm based on sum of squared differences function used in digital image correlation(DIC) may get unreliable results in specimen deformation measurement because it does not consider the light source variation. Thus, a modified N-R algorithm based on sum of squared differences that considers the effect of light source variation to the measurement results has been presented in this paper. This proposed algorithm has been programmed into Windows application program by VC software and showed easy operation and accurate measurements. The algorithm has been validated by comparing the computer generated speckle images. The results indicate that the proposed algorithm will be more effective than former algorithm when the surrounding light source changes. At the end of this paper, the relationship between the proposed method and zero-normalized sum of squared differences (ZNSSD) function that is always used to remove the light source change effect has been analyzed; the characteristics of both methods have been presented.

Abstract:Digital image correlation (DIC) method is an effective way for full-field strain measurement. Optical flow estimation methods combined with a global searching strategy for displacement field measurement are introduced in this paper. Compared with the conventional DIC method, this strategy can lessen possible mismatching between the reference image and warped image. By minimization the energy function of displacement field, displacement continuity and displacement gradients continuity among calculation points are achieved. For detecting large displacements, a coarse-to-fine strategy is also employed. More importantly, the architecture parallelization of optical flow estimation and searching strategy can decrease the running time of this method for time-critical conditions.This proposed method is universally applicable to the images with shadows, rotation, and large deformation. Several pairs of simulated digital speckle images were used to evaluate the performance of this novel DIC method, and the experimental results clearly demonstrate its robustness and effectiveness.

Abstract:This article discusses an advanced deformation method based on digital speckle correlation method, which is substantially more robust and has greater dynamic range than other full-field imaging technologies such as ESPI and moire. The system tracks the stochastic pattern applied to the measurement surface with sub-pixel accuracy. The object under test is viewed by a pair of high resolution, digital CCD cameras. Two cameras having been mounted the locations and attitudes were calibrated prior to measurement by combining nonlinear optimization with accurate calibration points. The calibration points were formed by an infrared LED, which moved with 3-D coordinate measurement machine. By using bilinear interpolation square-gray weighted centroid location algorithm, the imaging centers of the calibration points can be accurate. The speckle images of the same measured zone from different directions for the specimen are recorded by two cameras before and after deformation. Then the deformation displacement and strain of the specimen is calculated by these images using digital speckle correlation method and geometrical relation of stereography. The performance was demonstrated with real translation test.

Abstract:Given the low accuracy of the traditional digital image correlation (DIC) method in complex deformation measurement, a color DIC method is proposed using a prism camera. Compared to the Bayer camera, the Prism camera can capture color images with three channels of real information. In this paper, a prism camera is used to collect color images. Relying on the rich information of three channels, the classic gray image matching algorithm is improved based on the color speckle image. Considering the change of light intensity of three channels before and after deformation, the matching algorithm merging subsets on three channels of a color image is deduced, including integer-pixel matching, sub-pixel matching, and initial value estimation of light intensity. The advantage of this method in measuring nonlinear deformation is verified by numerical simulation. Finally, it is applied to the cylinder compression experiment. This method can also be combined with stereo vision to measure complex shapes by projecting color speckle patterns.

Abstract:Photomechanics Laboratory in the University of Science and Technology of China has concentrated on principles and applications of digital image correlation (DIC) recent years. Photomechanics Laboratory not only has improved the accuracy and efficiency of DIC but also has achieved research findings on speckle pattern standardization, compensation method for 2D DIC, biomedical engineering, and serrated yielding phenomenon. This paper provides a review: (1) a theoretical model and an estimation algorithm were presented for shape function error in local deformations, and a subset size chosen criterion was presented to ensure the measurement performance; inverse compositional Gauss-Newton method using second order shape function was presented, which is two-times faster than the traditional method. (2) The inherent nature of interpolation bias was revealed, an experimental approach was developed to measure the interpolation bias, a speckle pattern assessment that considering the effects of both the systematic error and random error was presented, and a theoretical model for the speckle pattern optimization was built. (3) Compensation methods for 2D DIC based on pre-calibration were presented. (4) A system for orthognathic surgery navigation was built; full-field pulse vibration measurement system was developed. (5) The emergence and evolution of PLC band was observed, and the phenomenon of out-of-band shrink is found. The strain localization in the width-wise direction was observed using two 2D DIC systems. (6) The vibration and strain were dynamically measurement using the speckle correlation method.
Single-camera microscopic stereo digital image correlation using a diffraction grating

Abstract:A simple, cost-effective but practical microscopic 3D-DIC method using a single camera and a transmission diffraction grating is proposed for surface profile and deformation measurement of small-scale objects. By illuminating a test sample with quasi-monochromatic source, the transmission diffraction grating placed in front of the camera can produce two laterally spaced first-order diffraction views of the sample surface into the two halves of the camera target. The single image comprising negative and positive first-order diffraction views can be used to reconstruct the profile of the test sample, while the two single images acquired before and after deformation can be employed to determine the 3D displacements and strains of the sample surface. The basic principles and implementation procedures of the proposed technique for microscopic 3D profile and deformation measurement are described in detail. The effectiveness and accuracy of the presented microscopic 3D-DIC method is verified by measuring the profile and 3D displacements of a regular cylinder surface.

Abstract:The digital image correlation (DIC) method is widely used in deformation measurement due to the advantages of being non-contact, high precision, full field measurement, and requiring simple experimental equipment. Traditionally, the grayscale speckle patterns captured by a monochromatic camera are used in the DIC method. With the growing development of consumer color cameras, there is a great potential for developing color information in the DIC method. This paper proposes a scaling- and rotation-invariant DIC (SRI-DIC) method based on the color speckle patterns. For the integer-pixel matching stage, the scaling- and rotation-invariant color histogram feature is used to estimate the initial value of the deformation parameters. For the sub-pixel matching stage, a new error function using the three-channel information of color camera is proposed to avoid the influence of illumination changes. In addition, this paper proposes a reverse retrieve strategy instead of the forward search to reduce the search time. Experiments show that the proposed SRI-DIC algorithm not only has scaling and rotation invariance, robustness, and high efficiency, but also that the average accuracy of the strain result can reach 0.1%.

Abstract:Digital image correlation (DIC) method using iterative least squares algorithm (ILS) for displacement field measurement and pointwise least squares algorithm (PLS) for strain field measurement is proposed in this paper. A more general and practical intensity change model is employed with consideration of the linear intensity change of the deformed image, followed by an iterative least squares algorithm for calculating displacement field with sub-pixel accuracy. The concept of correlation function is not used in the ILS method, even though we prove that the algorithm is actually equivalent to the optimization of the sum of squared difference correlation function using improved Newton–Raphson method. Besides, different from the conventional strain estimation approaches based on smoothing the displacement fields first and followed by differentiation of the smoothed displacement fields, a simple yet effective PLS algorithm is proposed for extracting strain fields from the computed displacement fields. The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed techniques is verified through numerical simulation experiments. A practical application of the algorithms to residual plastic deformation field measurement of GH4169 alloy subjected to tensile fatigue is also presented.

Abstract:Digital image correlation (DIC) is nowadays widely applied to many engineering areas as an effective optical displacement measurement technique. To minimize the potential effect of spatial sampling locations on full-field displacement measurement, this paper develops a self-adaptive sampling DIC algorithm for accurate and reliable displacement computation over entire specimen surfaces. Depending on local deformation states, the algorithm can automatically optimize spatial distribution of sampling points over specimen surfaces in a self-adaptive manner in combination with the well-developed DIC algorithm with Gaussian windows. Both a series of well-designed computer-simulated speckle images and actual cell-substrate deformation ones are employed to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, which demonstrates that the set of self-adaptive sampling algorithm is capable of recovering more accurate and precise full-field displacements compared to the conventional DIC algorithm with equidistant sampling.

Abstract:A method is presented for obtaining good images of a sprayed speckle pattern on specimen surfaces at high temperatures, suitable for strain measurement, by digital image correlation (DIC) using plasma spray for speckle preparation in which a bandpass filter, neutral density filters, and a linear polarizing filter are used to reduce intensity and noise in images. This is accomplished by speckle preparation through the use of plasma spray and suppression of black-body radiation through the use of filters. By using plasma spray for speckle preparation and the filters for image acquisition, the method was demonstrated to be capable of providing accurate DIC measurements up to 2600 degrees C. The full-field stretching deformation of the specimen was determined using the DIC technique. Experimental results indicate that the proposed high-temperature DIC method is easy to implement and can be applied to practical, full-field, high-temperature deformation measurements with high accuracy. Abstract:It is a rising non-contact measuring method to detect minor distortions and displacements using digital laser speckle images.To improve the speed of this measurement method,a new speckle tracking method—digital speckle marginal correlation(DSMC) method is presented after the research of digital speckle correlation measurement(DSCM) method and speckle images′ characteristic.The speckle images′ pixel sum of every line and column is computed to make the light energy accumulated to the margin,and then uses only the two sequences to find the displacement of speckle images by correlation and interpolation method.And the displacement of speckle image reflects the distortion or displacement of objects.The theory and experiment proves that this method is feasible and it reduces computing time greatly without damaging the computing precision,because the precision of the measurement is mainly determined by the number of interpolation points and the synthesis noise of the digital speckle images themselves.

Abstract:In large deformation measurement, digital image correlation (DIC 1 ) using functional forms can no longer describe the complex changes in grayscale information and morphology of sub-regions. To address this issue, particle filtering (PF) can be combined with color DIC (PFDIC 2 ) to establish a color distribution model to describe sub-regions, but PFDIC has poor performance. Therefore, this paper proposes an integrated adaptive particle filtering-based color digital image correlation (APF-DIC 3 ). This method first constructs a dynamic color distribution model based on ACFEF 4 to describe the sub-region. It then introduces the SSKL 5 correlation coefficient to measure the similarity between sub-regions, and establishes TAR 6 to adaptively adjust the number of particles, ultimately achieving adaptive matching of sub-regions under complex deformations. Performance evaluation and simulation results show that APF-DIC significantly improves the accuracy, robustness, and computational efficiency of the algorithm. Real experimental results further verify the effectiveness of APF-DIC, demonstrating its excellent illumination invariance.

Abstract:A technique of full field deformation measuring,i.e.Digital Speckle Correlation (DSC) is introduced in this paper.DSC is utilized to investigate the mechanical failure behaviors of plastic bonded explosive (PBX) with preset crack subjected to compressive load.Also,DSC is employed to obtain the thermal deformation field of the assembly structures of flip chip on ceramic substrate,especially for the strain concentrating area around the solder joints.These two applications show that DSC is promising in using for full field deformation measure of materials and structures.

Abstract:Digital image correlation (DIC) technique has been increasingly employed to implement surface deformation measurements in many engineering fields. Practically, it has been demonstrated that the choice of subset sizes exerts a strong influence on measurement results of DIC, especially when there exists locally larger deformation over the subsets involved. This paper proposes a novel subpixel registration algorithm with Gaussian windows to implicitly optimize the subset sizes by adjusting the shape of Gaussian windows in a self-adaptive fashion with the aid of a so-called weighted zero-normalized sum-of-squared difference correlation criterion. The feasibility and effectiveness of the self-adaptive algorithm are carefully verified through a set of well-designed synthetic speckle images, which indicates that the presented algorithm is able to greatly enhance the accuracy and precision of displacement measurements as compared with the traditional subpixel registration methods.

Abstract:The three-dimensional digital image correlation (3D-DIC) method is rapidly developing and is being widely applied to engineering and manufacturing. Despite its extensive use, the error caused by different image matching algorithms is seldom discussed. An algorithm for 3D speckle image generation is proposed, and the performances of different subpixel correlation algorithms are studied. The advantage is that there is no interpolation bias of texture in the simulation before and after deformation, and the error from the interpolation of speckle can be omitted in this algorithm. An error criterion for 3D reconstruction is proposed. 3D speckle images were simulated, and the performance of four subpixel algorithms is addressed. Based on the research results of different subpixel algorithms, a first-order Newton-Raphson iteration method and gradient-based method are recommended for 3D-DIC measurement.
