Abstract:The purpose of this research paper is devoted to the still little-studied problem of identifying the relations between the vocal and instrumental factors in Haydn’s music. The ideas of the domestic and foreign scholars about Haydn’s creative work are being expanded and enriched with new data. In the paper the historical meaning of Haydn’s creative work in the ХХI century is defined not only by his innovative sonata-symphonic forms and the formation of the major classical genres of symphony, concert for a solo instrument with orchestra, quartet and sonata but Haydn’s significant contribution to the development of instrumental trio, opera, the Austro-German Lied. This rationale of this phenomenon is the scientific novelty of the study. As a result, it is concluded that the renewed interest of modern researchers towards the little-studied pages of the composer’s art heritage shows the reconsideration of the role of these genres in the evolution of the world musical art as the undeservingly neglected works of the great composer according to their depth of expression and originality of composition means are not inferior and even compete with the composer’s well-recognized compositions.

Abstract:This book presents a systematic discussion of hypermeter and phrase structure in eighteenth-century music. It combines perspectives from historical and modern music theory with insights from the cognitive study of music and introduces a dynamic model of hypermeter that allows the analyst to trace the effect of hypermetric manipulations in real time. This model is applied in analyses of string chamber music by Haydn and Mozart. The analyses shed a new light upon this celebrated musical repertory, but the aim of this book goes far beyond an analytical survey of specific compositions. Rather, it is to give a comprehensive account of the ways in which phrase structure and hypermeter were described by eighteenth-century music theorists, conceived by eighteenth-century composers, and perceived by eighteenth-century listeners.

Abstract:had not fully explored all the textural possibilities of the relationship between the two instruments, and could do so only in a composing score where the whole texture was visible, rather than in single-stave sketches such as he normally used in his preparatory material. Lockwood’s account builds on his earlier one of 1970, and inevitably there is some duplication of ideas. He suggests that there were many more such composing scores from Beethoven’s middle period, which is plausible if rather lacking in firm evidence. He also notes that his aims are slightly different from those of Brandenburg, who created an ‘earliest version’ of each bar of the movement, regardless of whether these versions were necessarily intended to fit together at any one time. Lockwood instead focuses on the development section, where the revisions are most extensive. He had already described these in his earlier article, and so the present one addresses two main questions – the significance of the changes to the development section, andwhat compositional problems they solve. His ingenious analysis of register by means of labelling five different octaves that are available for both instruments enables some important new insights about these revisions, which create within the development a sense of ‘registral climax’ not present in the early version (page 43). Lockwood’s excellent parallel transcriptions of the earliest and final versions of this section, from bar 99 to bar 154, are enormously helpful here. This part of his discussion complements that in his 1970 article, where he compared the earliest version to the latest one in the manuscript, which differs considerably from both the earliest version and the published one. It is perhaps a little surprising that he does not draw attention to this, or put all three versions side by side. The text here gives no hint that the latest version in the manuscript shows any differences from the final one, and so his claim that the development ‘shows only one basic layer of corrections’ (p. 44) is liable to be misinterpreted. The volume as a whole, then, is of considerable use, especially for those who do not have the facsimile edited by Brandenburg (now out of print). It would, however, have benefited from a more careful study of the passages addressed by Dufner; a more detailed account of the middle of the development section, with a transcription of the intermediate version as well as the earliest and latest; and ideally a reproduction of the copyist’s score used for the first edition.

Abstract:Recently, I participated in the thesis defense on an eminently local subject, political economic writing in the eighteenth century in the cantons of Vaud (where I live and teach) and Berne (which at the time had occupied the Canton of Vaud) in Switzerland. I will spare you the details of this 700-pages-thick thesis, with an appendix of another 200 pages, which was not even about political economic writing in all of the Swiss Federation, but only in these two small regions in one of the most beautiful spots of Europe. But I became mesmerized by the profoundness of the political economic thinking of a group of now largely forgotten administrators and members of the Swiss socio-economic elite that grappled with questions of how to position their economic doings against a Europe that was plagued by the early eighteenth-century War of Succession, questions about the economic consequences not of population growth but of population decline, and the consequences of what David Hume has characterized so well as the "Jealousy of Trade" between the emerging European colonial empires. More in particular, these local men of politics and power were concerned with if and how they could preserve the agricultural system of common pastures—that were to figure prominently in Elinor Ostrom's early studies of the "commons"—or whether they should copy the English model of enclosures that seemed to promise agricultural innovation and economic growth. How would this pan out for the means of existence of the local population? And, of course, what would this mean for their own economic and political interests and standing? All these concerns brought them in conversation with the work of such writers as François Forbonnais, Richard Cantillon, the Physiocrats, and Scottish philosophers such as Hume, James Steuart, and Adam Smith, with some of whom they were also in correspondence. The measures the local elites implemented on the basis of these discussions were consequential for such important issues as land use, manufacture and commerce, and poor relief. Unsurprisingly perhaps, the thesis was supervised by one of Istvan Hont's students, Béla Kapossy, a professor in the history department of the University of Lausanne.

Abstract:This book is an economic analysis of plagiarism in music, focusing on social efficiency and questions of inequity in the revenue of authors/artists. The organisation into central chapters on the traditional literary aspect of composition and the technocratic problem of ‘sampling’ will help clarify disputes about social efficiency and equity. It will also be extremely helpful as an expository method where the text is used in courses on the music business. These issues have been explored to a great extent in other areas of musical content—notably piracy, copying and streaming. Therefore it is extremely helpful to exclude consumer use of musical content from the discussion to focus solely on the production side. This book also looks at the policy options in terms of the welfare economics of policy analysis.

Abstract:Abstract Haydn's ‘recomposition’ of the recapitulation is well known, but this article proposes, against received wisdom, that Haydn composed as though following a rule in the recapitulations of fast sonata-form movements from the 1770s onwards. The article extends William E. Caplin's functional theory to the Haydn recapitulation in order to revive the ‘sonata principle’, restated and limited to fast movements in Haydn's instrumental cycles. It then lays out a typology of Haydn's recapitulatory strategies that unfold within the constraints of the sonata principle.

Abstract:Historically, scholarly editions of music have identified a managing editor and individual volume editors. Other contributors might receive an acknowledgement with a vague description of activities, with institutional support often appearing in the printed metadata. This model's emphasis on single scholars perpetuates a myth, relying heretofore upon predominantly invisible labour. Digital editions require interdisciplinary collaboration combining musicological skills, technical skills, and infrastructural resources, thus challenging this model's ability to endure. Moreover, digital editions proffer opportunities for reconsidering the roles, workflows, and knowledge structures involved in critical musical scholarship. Situated at the intersection of currently running and recently completed digital projects, continuously emergent tools, sociology, and philosophy, this essay reflects on the role of the editor in the digital age. Beginning with Howard Becker's art worlds model of creative communities, it suggests a model based on FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) and CARE (Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, and Ethics) principles and the Music Encoding Initiative (MEI). MEI affords expansive metadata recording for contributors – composers, librettists, performers, editors, researchers, funders, etc. – to a work and its embodiments, which in turn enables broader visibility and empowers greater acknowledgement of the labour involved in such projects. Alongside other digital projects, this essay pays particular attention to how these technological and team-focused concepts are at- and in-play in the Reger-Werkausgabe Online .

Abstract:I consider the nature of music as a cognitive and cultural construct and discuss the relationship between mathematical systems and musical ones. I propose that mathematical modelling of certain kinds may be appropriate to model certain musical relationships, but this is so because of underlying cognitive principles. The conclusion is that to model music mathematically is essentially to model (parts of) cognition mathematically, which means that to model music in the abstract, as though it were itself a mathematical construct, divorced from its source in the human mind, is misleading. For a true understanding, the power of mathematics should be applied to the process of musical behaviour, not merely to its product. That process lies in the embodied human mind.

Abstract:After presenting the general framework of 'mathemusical' dynamics, we focus on one music-theoretical problem concerning a special case of homometry theory applied to music composition, namely Milton Babbitt's hexachordal theorem. We briefly discuss some historical aspects of homometric structures and their ramifications in crystallography, spectral analysis and music composition via the construction of rhythmic canons tiling the integer line. We then present the probabilistic generalization of Babbitt's result we recently introduced in a paper entitled ''New hexachordal theorems in metric spaces with probability measure'' and illustrate the new approach with original constructions and examples.

That the digital humanities has significantly influenced musicology is evidenced by the number of leading journals, including the Journal of the American Musicological Society, Notes, Journal of the Society of American Music and Nineteenth Century Music Review, that regularly review digital resources and by the increasing use of the tag 'digital musicology'. This special issue of Nineteenth Century Music Review (NCMR) and this introduction reflect a broad definition of the digital humanities; they embrace digital archives, born-digital projects, and studies employing computational methodologies and tools.

Abstract:Music is the background of life, representing an international language that connects different cultures. It is also significant with respect to economies, markets, and businesses. The literature in the music field has identified several issues related to the role of digitalization in the revolution of music, the distribution of music products, the management and organization of music events, music marketing strategies, and the position of musicians as entrepreneurs. This paper comprises a systematic literature review of the most recent articles discussing the numerous connections between music, business, and management (2017–2022). Through a rigorous protocol, this research discusses the effects of the digital revolution on the music industry, with particular reference to the persisting oligopoly of major labels and the new business models that integrate music streaming and social networks. The findings show the renaissance and relevance of live music events, the fundamental role of segmentation strategies for managing festivals, and the limited presence of sustainability as a priority during festivals and events management. Furthermore, the literature highlights the relevance of discussions concerning musicians' identity, especially in light of the complex relationship between the bohemian and the entrepreneurial nature of their profession. This is followed by numerous reflections on future research opportunities, recommending theoretical and empirical in-depth studies of music industry competition, futuristic management philosophies and business models, and the roles of technology, sustainability, and financial elements in fostering artists' success in the digital era. Finally, the paper discusses business models and strategies for musicians, festivals management, stores, and sustainability.
Abundance and scarcity : classical theories of money, bank balance sheets and business models, and the British restriction of 1797-1818

Abstract:The thesis looks through the lens of bank balance sheet accounting to investigate the structural change in the British banking system between 1780 and 1832, and how classical quantity theorists of money attempted to respond to the ensuing financialisation of the wartime economy with its growing reliance on credit funded with paper-based instruments (the ‘Vansittart system’ of war finance). The thesis combines contributions to three separate fields to construct a holistic historical example of the challenges faced by monetary economists when ‘modelling’ financial innovation, credit growth, ‘fringe’ banking, and agent incentives – at a time of radical experimentation: the suspension of the 80-year-old gold standard (“the Restriction”). First, critical text analysis of the history of economics argues that the 1809-10 debate between Ricardo and Bosanquet at the peak of the credit boom, bifurcated classical theory into two timeless competing policy paradigms advocating the ‘Scarcity’ or ‘Abundance’ of money relative to exchange transactions. The competing hypotheses regarding the role of money and credit are identified and the rest of the thesis examines the archival evidence for each. Second, the core of the thesis contributes to the historical literature on banking in relation to money by reconstructing a taxonomy of bank business models, their relationships with the London inter-bank settlement system, and their responses to the Restriction - drawing on some 17,000 mostly new data points collected from the financial records of London and Country banks. The final section contributes to the economic history of money by constructing aggregated views of total bank liabilities from the firm-level data, scaled to recently available British GDP estimates. These are examined to establish (with hindsight) the relative merits and lacuna of the competing theoretical hypotheses postulated by political economists. It was the period of deleveraging after 1810 that revealed the lacuna of both paradigms.

Abstract:The young Hermann Helmholtz, in an 1838 letter home, declared that he always appreciated music much more when he played it for himself. Though a frequent concert-goer, and celebrated for his highly influential 1863 work on the physiological basis of music theory, Die Lehre von den Tonempfindungen, it is likely that Helmholtz's enduring engagement with music began with his initial, personal experience of playing music for himself. I develop this idea, shifting the discussion of Helmholtz's work on sound sensation back to its origins, and examine the role of his material interaction with musical instruments and music itself. In his sound sensation studies, Helmholtz understood sound as an external, physical object. But Helmholtz also conceived of sound in musical terms. Further, Helmholtz's particular musical tastes as well as his deeply personal interaction with musical instruments allowed him to reconcile his conception of sound as physical object with his conception of sound as music. Helmholtz's physiological theory of sound sensation was both the product of and constitutive of how he heard and created sound. I argue that Helmholtz himself was the embodied reconciliation of his physiological theory of sound sensation and his belief that musical aesthetics were historically and culturally contingent.

Abstract:Jane Austen was a practising musician, and my intention in this paper is to investigate the significance of that fact for her writing practice. Beginning with the comparison between Elizabeth and Mary Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, I will consider contemporary attitudes to virtuosity and aesthetics in an attempt to understand the implications in Austen’s fiction of the distinction between ‘playing well’ and ‘being listened to with pleasure’. My recently completed project of cataloguing in detail each piece of playable music in the Austen Family Music Books facilitates the study of Austen’s personal musical taste in the context of her extended family and, more broadly, of English musical culture in the late Georgian era. I attempt to bring together Austen the musician with Austen the writer, both in her knowledge of the musical repertoire of the time and the language of music more generally.
