An Explanation on the Chinese Way of Crossing the Road from the Perspective of Hall's High-context and Low-context Culture Theory

Abstract:Currently,the phenomenon of the Chinese way of crossing the road has triggered the widespread response among the whole society.This kind of group behavior is typically viewed as one of the immoral behaviors.However,given that almost all members of the society display the same universal behavior,it should not be only understood from the perspective of people's literacy,but also reviewed further from the culture perspective.Based on the definitions of culture provided by some anthropologists,people's common behavior pattern is an indispensible part of culture.Social members who situate the same culture context tend to acquire the same behaviors.Culture plays an important role in shaping people's behaviors.Therefore,based on the high-context and low-context culture theory,the underlying social cultural mechanism that contributes to the phenomenon of"the Chinese way of crossing the road"is figured out.
