Abstract:Mogao Caves, collectively known as one of the five groups of cave shrines found in the Greater Dunhuang, were created between the 4th and 14th centuries. Among the 735 caves dug out of the cliff, the 492 caves in the south contain a collection of 45,000 square meters of murals, more than 2000 painted Buddhist statues and sculptures, and some 50,000 Buddhist scriptures and other relics. Between 1906 and 1919, many archaeologists and explorers of Central Asia visited the caves. The caves were opened to the public in 1979, and I first visited the caves in 2006. Two years later, I became a Chinese Art scholar in the Gulf. Fueled by my experience from the trip to the Mogao Caves, I injected a new dimension into the Middle East curriculum, introducing a new medium of artistic practice and a new paradigm of esthetic research. Using the Mogao Caves as a springboard, I introduced the Five-W approach to study artwork. This paper offers a relook, using this approach, at the Mogao Caves based on some of my research findings.

Abstract:Dunhuang cave is a precious heritage of the world. Cave285 was constructed about 1400 years ago. Because the fresco is protected well and there are lots of stones in the fresco, Cave285 is one of the most precious cave in Dunhuang. It is convenient to people to enjoy Dunhuang fresco using virtual reality technology, but it is not enough to explain the abundant connotation of the fresco in Cave285. This paper proposes the multimedia integrated virtual exhibit of Dunhuang Cave285. The 3D model of Cave285 is extended by adding multimedia nodes into 3DS file, and this can combine 3D model and multimedia database well. It is useful to define hotspot based on object, not on triangles. This can solve the problem aroused by LOD, which may delete the hotspot as the triangles are undergoing data reduction. Multimedia information presentation embedded in virtual environment works well in our system. This paper also introduces the 3D modeling technology of the Cave285, and also introduces the real-time rendering and reality rendering technology in our system.

Abstract:Dunhuang, known as the Land of Sand in ancient times, is located in the western part of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, bordering Qinghai and Xinjiang. Dunhuang (Mogao Grottoes) culture and art are honored as the cultural museum of the Eastern world. Among existing ancient works and documents, there are massive manuscripts in Tibetan, Uyghur, Sogdian (Yutian), Khotanese, Post Turkic (Hou Tuque), Sanskrit, Kharosthi, Sogdian (Suli), Tocharisch, Syriac, ancient Greek, and other minority languages, which are of great significance to Dunhuangology and resource development. This paper will analyze and summarize the study of Dunhuang science literature.

Abstract:The Dunhuang Caves, situated in China's Gansu Province, are renowned globally for their significant collection of murals, sculptures, architecture, and ancient Buddhist manuscripts. These caves, established along the historic Silk Road, encapsulate a rich tapestry of cultural exchange and artistic evolution spanning from the 4th to the 14th centuries. Comprising sites like the Mogao Caves and the Yulin Caves, they not only stand as reservoirs of ancient Buddhist art but also highlight intersections between Buddhism and neighboring Central Asian and Chinese cultures. The evolution of the Dunhuang Caves' art is segmented into periods mirroring Chinese dynasties, showcasing diverse influences from various regions, marking the journey from purely religious symbols to a more secularized and inclusive representation. Concurrently, the Caves mirror the secularization trajectory of Buddhism in China. Beyond their artistic merit, the Dunhuang Caves played a pivotal role socially, reflecting the intertwined relationships between Buddhism, society, and the Chinese ruling elite. As Buddhism assimilated into Chinese life, its representation in the Dunhuang Caves evolved, ultimately serving both spiritual and political purposes. This study delves into the artistic progression and the multifaceted social implications of the Dunhuang Caves' existence.

Abstract:In order to permanently preserve Dunhuang caves and their archives, it is necessary to compile a scientific, complete and comprehensive report on cave archaeology. The Archaeological Report on Mogao Caves266-275, which was edited by the Dunhuang Academy based on predecessorsu0027 research, is an epoch-making work and the largest achievement of cave archaeology since the 1970 s. The book covers eleven caves, numbered266-275, and focuses on the three earliest ones, namely caves 268, 272, and 275. As the first complete record of the Dunhuang caves, it not only records information about the cavesu0027 and reflects the latest level of grotto research, but also provides an example for other similar disciplines. The report, as a landmark of Chinese archaeology in cave temples, will exert far-reaching influence on the compilation of such archaeological research.

Abstract:Buddhist Utopian vision shaped the art of Pure Land; so did many other factors, including the actual locale. Taking Mogao Cave 172 as the main case study, this article deciphers a visual paradigm of a Pure Land painting and cave in Dunhuang (Gansu, China) from the high Tang period (710–780 CE). By analyzing the visual contents and compositions, the painting medium, the cave spaces, and the cliff site, this study investigates the ways in which the architectural images and spaces in Cave 172 helped to convey the invitation to Pure Land. A close reading of the Western Pure Land painting in Cave 172 reveals the spatial construct of the Buddhist paradise that encouraged a transformative viewing experience. A situated visual analysis of Cave 172 with its auxiliary cave and neighboring caves illustrates the historical procedure in which Pure Land imageries were further integrated with the architectural spaces of caves and cave suites. As this study demonstrates, strategies of spatial layering, self-symmetry and scaling, and plastic and multimedia practices of cave-making enhanced the situatedness of the utopian vision.

Abstract:Dunhuang Study are initiated by the Western Regions＇ exploitation during the reign of Emperor Qianlong.At that time,the literati in exile,XU Song was one of them,began to pay attention to Dunhuang,a city they had to go through as trudging to the Western Regions.From the descriptions of Dunhuang＇s location in Qianlong Era to the time that Dunhuang Manuscripts possessed by Zailan was exhibited to P.Pelliot were last for over 150 years,it could be considered the early period of Dunhuang Study.Dunhuang Study embodied in XU Song work known as Xiyu Shuidaoji（or Waterways of the Western Regions）.By academic study of historical records and archaeological investigation reports and stele inscriptions,XU Song had offered us an excellent example of Method of Tri-Proof.

Abstract:Dunhuang Mogao Grottos,a world cultural heritage,faces a crisis due to its over-burdened tourism and its protection also faces the challenges of its "environmental fatigue","physical deterioration",the "urbanization" within the scenic spot and the "isolation" from its surroundings.Thus,some Chinese and American experts have its cultural relics made into digitalized archives with the help of advanced science and technology,which offers digital photos and a virtual tour.This approach provides not only a reliable way for a permanent and accurate preservation of the grotto art but also a good means for the storage of other ancient ruins in danger and an opportunity for their preservation.

Abstract:Grotto art is one of the most important artistic expressions in Buddhist art, it is a comprehensive art that integrates architectural art, statue art and mural art. Dunhuang Grottoes group is one of the four largest grottoes groups in China, and it is also the largest and most abundant grottoes group in the world. This paper selects the early architectural art and statue art of the Dunhuang Grottoes as the research object with describing its artistic characteristics. Furthermore, this paper also attempts to explore the connotation of the multicultural art of the Dunhuang Grottoes based on factors such as the geographical location and historical background of the Dunhuang Grottoes, and ask an expert.

Abstract:Dunhuang patterns are an important component of Dunhuang grotto art. Dunhuang patterns are decorated on murals, statues, grotto bodies, and wooden eaves, with exquisite craftsmanship, rich shapes, huge scale, unique layout, and precious artistic value. The character shapes, line sketches, and coloring of Dunhuang patterns express people's desire for beauty and goodness. Through analysis and research on the inheritance and evolution of artistic styles in different periods of Dunhuang patterns, the use of sustainable design concepts for creative transformation and innovative design not only enhances the influence and appeal of excellent traditional Chinese culture represented by Dunhuang culture, but also reveals the cultural spirit contained in Dunhuang patterns. This article explores the application of Dunhuang pattern elements in sustainable design.

Images and Gestures from the Ancient Silk Road: The Dunhuang Mural Music and Dance

Abstract:This presentation introduces the speaker’s ethnomusicological research on the Dunhuang Mural Music and Dance, a multifaceted genre of music, dance, and dramatic performances that was created in the twentieth century and based primarily on images and gestures from the artifacts excavated from the Mogao Caves, one of the UNESCO world heritage sites in Dunhuang, China’s northwestern Gansu Province. The speaker has been conducting multisite fieldwork on the performative images in the Dunhuang arts since 2002. Represented through the performative images in the Dunhuang Mogao wall paintings were dancers and musicians with characteristics of non-Han ethnicities entertaining foreign gods of Buddhism, transmitted from India along the Silk Road. The 492 caves at the Mogao cliff near the modern town of Dunhuang have served as temples, sites for performative events, and an archive that consisted of medieval Chinese paintings and Buddhist sutras. These materials embody a history of negotiation and contestation between monolithic and pluralistic value systems in China. As a number of scholars have demonstrated, choreographers often utilize historical imageries in their performances to construct connections between the past and the present. The sources of Dunhuang Mural Music and Dance consist mainly of images, narratives, and musical tunes depicted in the historical wall paintings and/or documents discovered in the Mogao Caves. The creators of the genre tend to draw primarily from the artistic creations of the Sui and Tang dynasties. Primary research questions include: what stylistic choices do choreographers make and why? Which images among the archaeological materials from the past that they choose, according to specific aesthetic principles or laws, in the process of staging? The speaker addresses these questions by investigating the processes through which images and staged embodiment bring diverse historical, cultural, and religious elements into one performance genre.

Abstract:This article focuses on the relationship between body, scale, and space, as revealed in Mogao Cave 254 in Gansu Province. Three topics, namely, body scale, pilgrim behavior, and time–space perception, are discussed. A space model based on mapping and measurement by former scholars is created to facilitate and visualize the analysis of the body scale of the cave space; the restriction of body scale suggests certain pilgrim behavior in the cave, whereas the occurrence of body behavior results in perception in the dimension of time. How time and space are related must be understood to comprehend the motif of Buddhist expression. This study is an architectural approach to spatial analysis that integrates the design, construction, and use phases through the scale, behavior, and perception dimensions. It is dedicated to broadening and enriching the cognitive dimensions of the space value of Mogao caves to reveal the original value of caves as religious spaces and completely preserve their material and invisible cultural heritage.

Abstract:This article uncovers the Buddhist cultural relations between Chang’an and Dunhuang in the High Tang Era through the study of a Dunhuang document preserved in the Russian Collections. The Da Anguo Si (Great Anguo Monastery) was once the residence of Prince Anguo Xiangwang (later Ruizong Emperor), who gave up the purple to his son Xunzong in 712 A.D. During the Kaiyuan Era (713-741), The Great Anguo Monastery accommodated every kind of Buddhist scholars and thus became one of the most important royal monasteries. This certificate shows that Daojian, a monk from the Great Anguo Monastery, was authorized to preside over the ritual held in Shazhou (Dunhuang) in 741. At the same time, he preached the imperial commentary on the Diamond Sutra, and the Lotus Sutra as well as the Fanwangjing (Brahmajāla-sūtra). This indicates that a culture bridge was set up between Chang’an and Dunhuang, through which the newly published sutra, paintings, and articles could transported to the border city.
