Historical Perspective on Dunhuang and the Mogao Caves

Abstract:Based on study of the mural of Zhang Qian’s exploration of the Western Region depicted in Mo-gao Cave 323, an Eastern Han dynasty bamboo slip which records a Buddhist pagoda in Dunhuang, and other relevant historical documents,this paper discusses the Buddhist history in Dunhuang and demonstrates the evolu-tion of Buddhist art styles of Mogao and the importance of this art in the history of Chinese Buddhism.
