Abstract:Through ethnographic research with indigenous migrant youth and their families in Guatemala, Southern Mexico, and the United States, Lauren Heidbrink's timely book demonstrates "how migration is socially constructed, practiced, and experienced" (p. 3), or what she terms "migranthood." <i>Migranthood</i> begins with the arrival of 70,000 unaccompanied children from Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras at the US-Mexico border in 2014. Heidbrink complicates the widely accepted narrative of the unprecedented humanitarian crisis by demonstrating that it was, in fact, a policy crisis long in the making and largely a result of US economic and political intervention in Central America. The effects of US and foreign intervention directly affect indigenous Guatemalan migrants, who have resorted to migration as a collective and historically rooted survival strategy against racism, historical violence, and intergenerational structural inequality in Guatemala. US immigration policy, however, classifies unaccompanied youth as economic migrants rather than as refugees, a stance the United States has long taken toward Central Americans.

Abstract:This commentary is a response to a recent article by Gómez-Villegas and Larrinaga: an article that uses some of our previously published research to argue that the [further] opening of the Latin American critical accounting research communities will lead to a renewed colonization of local knowledges. Our commentary concurs that there is a very real risk that academic publishing processes will exacerbate the colonization of academic knowledge production in the South. At the same time, we suggest that Gómez-Villegas and Larrinaga’s focus on the research activities of individual scholars is misplaced since it is the commercial activities of large, academic publishers that are driving these colonization processes. Furthermore, we propose that the authors’ analysis perpetuates a Ladino version of internal colonialism where indigenous peoples and other marginalized communities are simultaneously erased yet represented as ignorant and unable to think. We conclude by affirming Rigoberta Menchú’s statement that the only way to confront injustice and advocate for positive social change is to work collectively and to fight against all forms of neocolonial practices.

Abstract:This article focuses on Alejandro Morales’s novel The Rag Doll Plagues (1992) and explores the transhistorical dimensions of the subordination indigenous and mestiza/o identities experience against colonial and postcolonial authoritarian forces in the borderlands between Mexico and the United States. Spanish colonialism, US racism and eco-destruction, each transpiring in different moments of the New World history, are the diverse forms the borderland crises take up in the three Books comprising the novel. Mestizaje and intercultural communication, as well as the retrieval of the indigenous and Mexican cultural traditions, foster the ongoing creation of new hybrid racial, ethnic and cultural identities in all the three Books and, thus, emerge as the analeptics to the diachronically persistent plight of racism.

Abstract:Reviewing this volume edited by Fabio Perocco and published in open access version by University of Venice Ca' Foscari Editions is no easy task. What makes it hard to sum up this work is not its length (430 pages), but rather its interdisciplinary approach, the depth of observations, the richness in contents and points of view, its geographical width. Yet, these aspects make the book fundamental for anyone willing to understand migratory movements in today's world. Its main merit is having addressed, consistently and systematically, the close relation that has come to be, over the course of decades, between torture and migration. Such relation is no recent piece of news: for a long time, torture has been indicated as one of the most widespread reasons for leaving, one of the most frequent experiences lived along the migration path and, more and more often, a reality that migrants are forced to tackle in receiving countries. Nevertheless, the scientific narrative of such relation is often limited, fragmented and, sometimes, manipulated. Torture has thus far been studied systematically in relation to power (MacMaster 2004), wars and dictatorships (Hajjar 2013, Cohen 2005, Rejali 2009), it is considered as lying at the basis of modernity (Reemtsma 2012) or of the process of civilization (Linklater 2007), but never before it had been analyzed as a structured element of migration. Thus, the volume deserves to be recognized as paving the way for an innovative field of research.

Abstract:García-Lamarca offers us an ethnography of the disciplining power of mortgage debt in Spain and the political response of La PAH— a grassroot movement for the right to housing— to discriminatory banking practices in terms of race, gender and class and linked to Spain’s history of private home ownership. The book takes us from bank branches to PAH assemblies to the everyday life of indebted activists/compañerxs to show how the financialization of housing works on the ground and how people organize and fight back against financial injustice.

Abstract:This collaborative research delves into intercultural (in)justice, dignity, and the recognition of non-hegemonic knowledge. Its main objective is to investigate marginalised knowledge in immigration, gender violence, adultism, and minority groups, including indigenous communities. By diving into the significance of informal knowledge-sharing settings this research underscores how vulnerable individuals and collectives showcase their identity holistically. Lastly drawing attention to the importance of fostering safe spaces, interculturality and sharing cognitive practice to counter marginalisation, promoting reconstruction through tools such as hospitality, active listening, and assertive communication. Esta investigación colaborativa profundiza en la (in)justicia intercultural, la dignidad y el reconocimiento del conocimiento no hegemónico. Su principal objetivo es investigar el conocimiento marginado en la inmigración, la violencia de género, el adultismo y los grupos minoritarios, incluidas las comunidades indígenas. Al profundizar en la importancia de los entornos informales de intercambio de conocimientos, esta investigación subraya cómo los individuos y colectivos vulnerables muestran su identidad de forma holística. Por último, llama la atención sobre la importancia de fomentar espacios seguros, la interculturalidad y el intercambio de prácticas cognitivas para contrarrestar la marginación, promoviendo la reconstrucción a través de herramientas como la hospitalidad, la escucha activa y la comunicación asertiva.

Abstract:This article examines the role of gender as an embodied site of political control and resistance within Mapuche-Capuchin relations in the early period of Bavarian Capuchin mission-building in Chile (1897-1922). The study frames agricultural science education as a civilizing method employed in the Capuchin mission schools, targeting Mapuche children. The aim was to educate Mapuche children in Christian and Western gender roles, moral behavior, and rural economic occupations. Amid the overarching conflict over land rights and privatization between Mapuche communities and the Chilean government, the state's support for the Capuchin order's evangelizing mission was perceived as a long-term strategy to appropriate Indigenous lands and assimilate the Mapuche into the rural and urban workforce. The article illustrates how the conflict over embodied gender roles disrupted Mapuche socioeconomic relations.

Abstract:Abstract: This article places colonial Cuzco’s Nombre de Jesús confraternity within early modern global history. The Nombre de Jesús served as a focal point for collaboration between Indigenous elites and Jesuit proselytizers in the old Inca capital. An ambiguous archive and forgeries related to the confraternity have led to sensationalist narratives about the confraternity. While compelling from the perspective of archival and forgery studies, this discussion ultimately distracts from a more thoroughly-grounded history of a mixed European and Indigenous institution. This article draws on evidence outside the forgeries to show how Indigenous mission history was globally connective and collaborative rather than European-dominated.

Abstract:Summarising the new orphan works law of Italy, we show how it makes the public interest prevail and allows libraries and other beneficiaries to improve their services. We then argue that such services are part of their mission towards the public domain and are a first step for its complete accomplishment, by the work of each and a reform of european copyright. Narratives of Italian Transatlantic (re)migration, 1897-1936

Abstract:Remigration is typically envisioned as the final stage of the migration experience, a one-way movement from the host country to the country of origin. This article offers a novel, intimate view of historical return migration as a more complex and discursive process. The case study is Italian American migrants at the turn of the twentieth century, one of the groups which - according to historical statistics - was most actively engaged in Transatlantic remigration; more recent readings, however, show that many of these returnees eventually re-emigrated to the US. Using for the first time immigrant newspapers against the baseline of the Italian public discourse, the article analyzes Italian migrants' own accounts of remigration as a way to access the more subjective dimension of migration. The integration of text mining and Critical Discourse Analysis will show that migrants were experiencing migration as a sense of identity crisis manifested through feelings of being misunderstood, rejected and unappreciated. These results indicate a less material reading of (re)migration, that is beyond economic reasons, and that for many individuals remigration was a bi-directional movement, only fully concluded when they were no longer experiencing a sense of identity crisis, be it in their homeland or the host society. The article will argue that this was the visible outward sign of a much more profound issue: the Italian Government's view of (r)emigration -mainly through the lens of domestic economic advantage -deeply underestimated the complexity of migration as a social phenomenon and as a profoundly changing psychological experience. In the long run, this error of judgment deeply damaged Italy as many of those ritornati felt misunderstood and disillusioned and crossed the Atlantic again, this time never to return.

Abstract:Since the arrival of colonialism in America, it aimed to impose a new identity on the native inhabitants, a fact that affected all areas of life of the indigenous peoples. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that the system of relationships developed in this struggle of the native peoples maintains a legacy that continues to influence the cultural identity of the Latin American peoples to this day. This is a documentary-type study, taking as an example the existence in Venezuela of a Psychopathic load, as a possible result of that inheritance imposed since colonial times. The theoretical review of several authors makes reference to this inherited psychopathic burden, which is expressed in events such as: homicides and other types of violence, in addition to some problems evident in daily social life. The results of the shared documentary analysis assume that this load of aggressiveness could have been inherited from conflicts generated from the first Spanish conquerors. However, other authors point out that the wars of independence broke with the continuity of our Identity. Finally, we reflect on initiating a change of attitude from the colonial/modernity relationship and strengthening the attitude towards the decolonial, which warrants abandoning and moving away from that social catastrophe that delves into non-human behavior and precisely taking a turn towards restoration of the subjective and material human nature.

Abstract:The lack of diversity in the archaeological community is worsened by the sense of exclusivity created at the meeting of archaeological practice and descendant communities. The authors' work, carried out in partnership with Indo-Hispano/a communities in New Mexico, attempts to counteract this steep gradient of inclusion through the incorporation, professionalization, and leadership of our research collaborators. Our work confronts historical paradigms denying the significance of late colonial and Mexican period community-making in the Southwest, bringing to light the problematic nature of prior historical silences for their propagation of essentialist notions of indigeneity. The dehistoricization of the Indo-Hispano/a political, social, and economic present can be combated by archaeologies that emphasize community priorities for the direction of research. Central to such commitments is an archaeological praxis which not only fully recognizes the political nature of the work, but translates that potential through a cooperative program of action and inclusion.

Abstract:Drawing on primary sources gathered from repositories in Abruzzo, Bologna and Rome, this study – underpinned by the framework of governmentality – analyses the accounting, financial and governmental practices deployed as a consequence of the Reclamation Consortia in Fascist Italy. In a scenario stimulated by the ascent of the Fascist discourse on the Agricultural Corporative Economy, this analysis seeks to show the new technologies of government deployed by the State and local communities through the Reclamation Consortia Reform. The study also unveils the leading role in the change process played by Arrigo Serpieri who, besides acting as Under Secretary of State at the Ministry of Agriculture in Mussolini’s government, was considered at the time Italy’s most important agricultural expert.
