Abstract:Advances in attosecond spectroscopy have enabled tracing and controlling the electron motion dynamics in matter, although they have yielded insufficient information about the electron dynamic in the space domain. Hence, ultrafast electron and x-ray imaging tools have been developed to image the ultrafast dynamics of matter in real time and space. The cutting-edge temporal resolution of these imaging tools is on the order of a few tens to a hundred femtoseconds, limiting imaging to the atomic dynamics and leaving electron motion imaging out of reach. Here, we obtained the attosecond temporal resolution in the transmission electron microscope, which we coined "attomicroscopy." We demonstrated this resolution by the attosecond diffraction measurements of the field-driven electron dynamics in graphene. This attosecond imaging tool would provide more insights into electron motion and directly connect it to the structural dynamics of matter in real-time and space domains, opening the door for long-anticipated real-life attosecond science applications in quantum physics, chemistry, and biology.

Abstract:The electron motion in atoms and molecules is at the heart of all phenomena in nature that occur outside the nucleus. Recently, ultrafast electron and X-ray imaging tools have been developed to image the ultrafast dynamics of matter in real time and space. The cutting-edge temporal resolution of these imaging tools is on the order of a few tens to a hundred femtoseconds, limiting imaging to atomic dynamics. Hence electron motion imaging remains beyond the reach. Here, we achieved attosecond electron imaging temporal resolution in a transmission electron microscope, orders of magnitude faster than the highest reported imaging resolution, to demonstrate, which we coin it as (attomicroscopy) to image the field-induced electron dynamics in neutral multilayer graphene. Our results show that the electron motion between the carbon atoms in graphene is due to the field-driven electron dynamics in the conduction band and depends on the field waveform, strength, and polarization direction. This attomicroscopy imaging provides more insights into the electron motion of neutral matter in real time and space and would have long-anticipated real-life attosecond science applications in quantum physics, chemistry, and biology.

Abstract:Attosecond science represents a new frontier in atomic, molecular, and condensed matter physics, enabling one to probe the exceedingly fast dynamics associated with purely electronic dynamics in a wide range of systems. This paper presents a brief discussion of the technology required to generate attosecond light pulses and gives representative examples of attosecond science carried out in several laboratories. Attosecond transient absorption, a very powerful method in attosecond science, is then reviewed and several examples of gas phase and condensed phase experiments that have been carried out in the Leone/Neumark laboratories are described.

Abstract:Field emission of electrons underlies great advances in science and technology, ranging from signal processing at ever higher frequencies 1 to imaging of the atomic-scale structure of matter 2 with picometre resolution. The advancing of electron microscopy techniques to enable the complete visualization of matter on the native spatial (picometre) and temporal (attosecond) scales of electron dynamics calls for techniques that can confine and examine the field emission on sub-femtosecond time intervals. Intense laser pulses have paved the way to this end 3,4 by demonstrating femtosecond confinement 5,6 and sub-optical cycle control 7,8 of the optical field emission 9 from nanostructured metals. Yet the measurement of attosecond electron pulses has remained elusive. We used intense, sub-cycle light transients to induce optical field emission of electron pulses from tungsten nanotips and a weak replica of the same transient to directly investigate the emission dynamics in real time. Access to the temporal properties of the electron pulses rescattering off the tip surface, including the duration τ = (53 as ± 5 as) and chirp, and the direct exploration of nanoscale near fields open new prospects for research and applications at the interface of attosecond physics and nano-optics.

Abstract:Abstract Since the first demonstration of the generation of attosecond pulses (1 as = 10-18s) in the extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) spectral region, several measurement techniques have been introduced, at the beginning for the temporal characterization of the pulses, and immediately after for the investigation of electronic and nuclear ultrafast dynamics in atoms, molecules and solids with unprecedented temporal resolution. The attosecond spectroscopic tools established in the last two decades, together with the development of sophisticated theoretical methods for the interpretation of the experimental outcomes, allowed to unravel and investigate physical processes never observed before, such as the delay in photoemission from atoms and solids, the motion of electrons in molecules after prompt ionization which precede any notable nuclear motion, the temporal evolution of the tunneling process in dielectrics, and many others. This review focused on applications of attosecond techniques to the investigation of ultrafast processes in atoms, molecules and solids. Thanks to the introduction and ongoing developments of new spectroscopic techniques, the attosecond science is rapidly moving towards the investigation, understanding and control of coupled electron-nuclear dynamics in increasingly complex systems, with ever more accurate and complete investigation techniques. Here we will review the most common techniques presenting the latest results in atoms, molecules and solids.

Abstract:Scientists have been developing sources of light with ever-shorter pulse durations, in order to study motion in systems ranging from a golfer’s swing to the motion of atoms within molecules. The shortest pulses produced to date are under 60 attoseconds, i.e. s. One attosecond is to one second as one second is to the age of the universe. For comparison, the classical orbital period of an electron in a hydrogen atom is 150 attoseconds. Attosecond pulses were first produced in 2001. This article describes how attosecond pulses are generated and how they are measured. Some applications of attosecond pulses are described, such as measuring the delay in photoionisation, or observing molecular dissociation dynamics.

Abstract:The quest for how quantum systems evolve, and eventually, how to induce such quantum systems to behave as desired has been growing during the last two decades in a new paradigm, “Control Age” of the 21st century science. The past two decades have witnessed the remarkable advance in the new metrology for ultrafast electron dynamics, which allows one to control material processes at electron level and study dynamics far away from equilibrium, to which the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded. This article reviews recent progress in the generation of isolated attosecond pulses and their applications for characterization and real-time measurement and manipulation of electron dynamics in atoms, and condensed matters, providing the audience with the new insights and perspective that these tools can provide in aspects of both fundamental science and future technology.

Abstract:Ultrafast electron and X-ray imaging and spectroscopy are the basis for an ongoing revolution in the understanding of dynamical atomic-scale processes in matter. The underlying technology relies heavily on laser science for the generation and characterization of ever shorter pulses. Recent findings suggest that ultrafast electron microscopy with attosecond-structured wavefunctions may be feasible. However, such future technologies call for means to both prepare and fully analyse the corresponding free-electron quantum states. Here, we introduce a framework for the preparation, coherent manipulation and characterization of free-electron quantum states, experimentally demonstrating attosecond electron pulse trains. Phase-locked optical fields coherently control the electron wavefunction along the beam direction. We establish a new variant of quantum state tomography—‘SQUIRRELS’—for free-electron ensembles. The ability to tailor and quantitatively map electron quantum states will promote the nanoscale study of electron–matter entanglement and new forms of ultrafast electron microscopy down to the attosecond regime.

Abstract:With the fast development of intense laser technologies, a lot of new phenomena in la- ser-matter interactions have been experimentally observed and successfully explained by various theories and simulations. One of the specular processes is high-order harmonic generation (HHG), in which atoms and molecules can emit photons with energies equal to multiple of the fundamental laser photon energy. By synthesizing several neighboring orders of HHG spectra near its cutoff, experimentalists have been able to generate laser pulses of duration in the attosecond time scale (1 as = 10~(-18) s). The availability of attosecond pulses has opened a drastically new regime of ultrafast sciences, where it is possible for scientists to trace and control the motion of electrons on its natural scale. After the fruitful developments of femtosciences in the last two decades, the newly opened attosecond science is another big jump of human being to understand and control the internal dynamics of atoms and molecules. In this paper, we will give a brief review of what we have done in recent years, especially about tracing and controlling the electronic motion of atoms and molecules by attosecond pulses.

Abstract:We review recent advances in attosecond science; particular attention is devoted to the generation, temporal characterization and applications of isolated attosecond pulses. After a brief overview of the physical mechanisms at the basis of attosecond pulse generation, the experimental methods used for the production of isolated sub-femtosecond pulses are discussed, with particular emphasis on the polarization gating method, which is based on the use of driving pulses with a time-dependent polarization state. The recent emergence of attosecond metrology is described and various techniques for temporal characterization of extreme ultraviolet pulses in the sub-femtosecond regime are analyzed. The streak-camera approach turned out to be an extremely powerful method: all applications of isolated attosecond pulses reported so far are essentially based on such experimental approach. We furthermore discuss recently proposed applications of isolated attosecond pulses in various research fields. Particularly interesting will be the application of attosecond pulses to the investigation of multielectron systems. The collective electronic motion in complex systems and the electron correlation mechanisms represent fundamental problems in atomic and molecular physics, both from a theoretical and an experimental point of view: the application of attosecond pulses promises to offer a formidable tool for the experimental investigation of such fundamental physical processes. Moreover the possibility to directly measure and control the ultrafast charge migration process in complex molecules, which is at the basis of fundamental processes in nature, can open the way to the emergence of attochemistry, with important consequences both for fundamental research and technology.

Abstract:Attosecond science offers formidable tools for the investigation of electronic processes at the heart of important physical processes in atomic, molecular and solid-state physics. In the last 15 years impressive advances have been obtained from both the experimental and theoretical points of view. Attosecond pulses, in the form of isolated pulses or of trains of pulses, are now routinely available in various laboratories. In this review recent advances in attosecond science are reported and important applications are discussed. After a brief presentation of various techniques that can be employed for the generation and diagnosis of sub-femtosecond pulses, various applications are reported in atomic, molecular and condensed-matter physics.

Abstract:Since 2001 and the first demonstrations of the feasibility of generating and measuring attosecond light pulses, attosecond science has developed into a very active and quickly evolving research field. Its ultimate goal is the real-time tracking of electron dynamics in all forms of matter, ranging from atoms and large molecules to the condensed phase and plasmas. The accomplishment of this goal has required and still calls for developments in ultrafast laser technology, ultrafast metrology, extreme ultra-violet (XUV) optics, pump–probe measurement schemes and non-linear laser-matter interaction. Moreover, the interpretation of the experimental results in attosecond experiments has stimulated and guided major developments in theoretical descriptions of ultrafast electronic processes in matter. Motivated by these two decades of development, several large-scale facilities, including extreme light infrastructure—attosecond light pulse source (ELI-ALPS) and several free electron laser facilities (the linac coherent light source (LCLS) at Stanford and the European XFEL in Hamburg) are now pushing the development of a new generation of attosecond sources. This considerable technological effort opens new and important perspectives in the field of ultrafast science with potential applications in photochemistry, photobiology and advanced electronics. In this context, the joint focus issue on Attosecond technology(/ies) and science of <i>J. Phys. Photon.</i> and <i>J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys.</i> aims to provide an overview of the state-of-the-art in attosecond science, from the basic science involved in the generation and in applications of attosecond pulses to the technologies that are required.

Abstract:Ultrashort electron pulses are crucial for time-resolved electron diffraction and microscopy of fundamental light-matter interaction. In this work, we study experimentally and theoretically the generation and characterization of attosecond electron pulses by optical-field-driven compression and streaking at dielectric or absorbing interaction elements. The achievable acceleration and deflection gradient depends on the laser-electron angle, the laser's electric and magnetic field directions and the foil orientation. Electric and magnetic fields have similar contributions to the final effect and both need to be considered. Experiments and theory agree well and reveal the optimum conditions for highly efficient, velocity-matched electron-field interactions in longitudinal or transverse direction. We find that metallic membranes are optimum for light-electron control at mid-infrared or terahertz wavelengths, but dielectric membranes are excel in the visible/near-infrared regimes and are therefore ideal for the formation of attosecond electron pulses.

Abstract:The 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics spotlights the techniques to generate attosecond light pulses. The generation of attosecond pulses heralds a new era in understanding electron dynamics. This perspective traces the evolution of ultrafast science, from early microwave electronics to the recent breakthroughs in attosecond pulse generation and measurement. Key milestones, such as high harmonic generation, the RABBITT method, attosecond streaking camera, etc, illuminate our journey toward capturing the transient electron motions in atoms. Recent discoveries, including zeptosecond delays in H2 single-photon double ionization and the potential of attosecond “electron” pulses despite challenges, etc., hint at an exciting future for ultrafast studies.

Abstract:Time-resolved electron microscopy aims to track nanoscale excitations and dynamic states of matter at a temporal resolution ultimately reaching the attosecond regime. Periodically time-varying fields in an illuminated specimen cause free-electron inelastic scattering, which enables the spectroscopic imaging of near-field intensities. However, access to the evolution of nanoscale fields and structures within the cycle of light requires sensitivity to the optical phase. Here we introduce free-electron homodyne detection as a universally applicable approach to electron microscopy of phase-resolved optical responses at high spatiotemporal resolution. In this scheme, a phase-controlled reference interaction serves as the local oscillator to extract arbitrary sample-induced modulations of a free-electron wavefunction. We demonstrate this principle through the phase-resolved imaging of plasmonic fields with few-nanometre spatial and sub-cycle temporal resolutions. Due to its sensitivity to both phase- and amplitude-modulated electron beams, free-electron homodyne detection measurements will be able to detect and amplify weak signals stemming from a wide variety of microscopic origins, including linear and nonlinear optical polarizations, atomic and molecular resonances, and attosecond-modulated structure factors.

Abstract:We review the first ten years of attosecond science with a selection of recent highlights and trends and give an outlook on future directions. After introducing the main spectroscopic tools, we give recent examples of representative experiments employing them. Some of the most fundamental processes in nature have been studied with some results initiating controversial discussions. Experiments on the dynamics of single-photon ionization illustrate the importance of subtle effects on such extreme timescales and lead us to question some of the well-established assumptions in this field. Attosecond transient absorption, as the first all-optical approach to resolve attosecond dynamics, has been used to study electron wave packet interferences in helium. The attoclock, a recent method providing attosecond time resolution without the explicit need for attosecond pulses, has been used to investigate electron tunneling dynamics and geometry. Pushing the frontiers in attosecond quantum mechanics with increasing temporal and spatial resolution and often limited theoretical models results in unexpected observations. At the same time, attosecond science continues to expand into more complex solid-state and molecular systems, where it starts to have impact beyond its traditional grounds.

Abstract:Ultrafast electron microscopy provides a movie-like access to structural dynamics of materials in space and time, but fundamental atomic motions or electron dynamics are, so far, too quick to be resolved. Here, we report the all-optical control, compression, and characterization of electron pulses in a transmission electron microscope by the single optical cycles of laser-generated terahertz light. This concept provides isolated electron pulses and merges the spatial resolution of a transmission electron microscope with the temporal resolution that is offered by a single cycle of laser light. We also report the all-optical control of multi-electron states and find a substantial two-electron and three-electron anticorrelation in the time domain. These results open up the possibility to visualize atomic and electronic motions together with their quantum correlations on fundamental dimensions in space and time.

Abstract:Visualizing ultrafast dynamics at the atomic scale requires time-resolved characterization with femtosecond temporal resolution. For fully relativistic electron bunch probes, existing techniques for single-shot ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) are limited by the achievable electron probe bunch length, charge, and timing jitter. We present the first experimental demonstration of dual-fed THz-driven compression and time-stamping that enables electron probes with improved temporal resolution. This technique utilizes two counter-propagating quasi-single-cycle THz pulses generated from two OH-1 organic crystals coupled into an optimized THz compressor structure. We demonstrate electron bunch compression and time-of-arrival jitter suppression by a factor of 3 paving the way toward unique opportunities for UED time-resolved measurements.
