Abstract:Jupiter's moon Io hosts extensive volcanism driven by tidal heating. The isotopic composition of Io's inventory of volatile elements, including sulfur and chlorine, reflects its outgassing and mass loss history and provides an avenue for exploring its evolution. We used millimeter observations of Io's atmosphere to measure sulfur isotopes in gaseous SO2 and SO, and chlorine isotopes in gaseous NaCl and KCl. We find $^{34}$S/$^{32}$S=0.0595$\pm$0.0038 ($\delta^{34}$S=+347$\pm$86 per mille), which is highly enriched compared to average Solar System values and indicates that Io has lost 94 to 99% of its available sulfur. Our measurement of $^{37}$Cl/$^{35}$Cl=0.403$\pm$0.028 ($\delta^{37}$Cl=+263$\pm$88 per mille) shows chlorine is similarly enriched. These measurements indicate that Io has been volcanically active for most or all of its history, with potentially higher outgassing and mass-loss rates at earlier times.

Abstract:We investigated whether sulfur-bearing species are present on the icy Galilean moon Callisto by analyzing eight near-infrared reflectance spectra collected over a wide range of sub-observer longitudes. We measured the band areas and depths of a 4-micron feature in these spectra, which has been attributed to sulfur dioxide (SO2), as well as carbonates, in previously collected datasets of this moon. All eight spectra we collected display the 4-micron band. The four spectra collected over Callisto's leading hemisphere display significantly stronger 4-micron bands compared to the four trailing hemisphere spectra (> 3-sigma difference). We compared the central wavelength position and shape of Callisto's 4-micron band to laboratory spectra of various sulfur-bearing species and carbonates. Our comparison demonstrates that Callisto's 4-micron band has a spectral signature similar to thermally-altered sulfur, as well as a 4.025 micron feature attributed to disulfanide (HS2). Our analysis therefore supports the presence of S-bearing species on Callisto but is not consistent with the presence of SO2. The significantly stronger 4-micron band detected on Callisto's leading hemisphere could result from collisions with H2S-rich dust grains that originate on Jupiter's retrograde irregular satellites or implantation of magnetospheric S ions that originate from volcanic activity on Io. Alternatively, S-bearing species could be native to Callisto and are exposed by dust collisions and larger impacts that drive regolith overturn, primarily on its leading side.

Abstract:Infrared spectral images of Jupiter's volcanic moon Io, acquired during the October and November 1999 and February 2000 flybys of the Galileo spacecraft, were used to study the thermal structure and sulfur dioxide distribution of active volcanoes. Loki Patera, the solar system's most powerful known volcano, exhibits large expanses of dark, cooling lava on its caldera floor. Prometheus, the site of long-lived plume activity, has two major areas of thermal emission, which support ideas of plume migration. Sulfur dioxide deposits were mapped at local scales and show a more complex relationship to surface colors than previously thought, indicating the presence of other sulfur compounds.

Abstract:We review sulfur chemistry of the gas giant planets and their moons where sulfur compounds are observed. The major S-bearing gas in the upper atmospheres of the giant planets is H2S and is removed from their observable atmospheres by condensation into cloud layers (NH4SH on all four planets and additionally H2S ice on Uranus and Neptune). Any remaining H2S at higher altitudes is destroyed photochemically. Among the moons Io is the world dominated by sulfur. We summarize the sulfur cycle on Io and how pyrovolcanism is spreading sulfur across the Jovian system. Implantation of sulfur into icy surfaces of the other Galilean moons via magnetospheric transfer and radiolysis are major processes affecting the sulfur chemistry on their icy surfaces. On the icy worlds, we are literally looking at the top of the icebergs. Subsurface liquid salty bodies reveal themselves through cryovolcanism on Europa, Ganymede, and Enceladus, where salt deposits are indicated. Subsurface oceans are suspected on several other moons. We summarize the sulfur cycle for the icy Galilean moons. The occurrence of sulfates can be explained by salt exchange reactions of radiolytically produced H2SO4 with brine salts (carbonates and halides), or from a subsurface ocean that has become acidified by uptake of H2SO4 leaked from ice. In the primordial oceans of the moons that accreted with high ice rock ratios, sulfur is expected as sulfide and bisulfide anions and H2S in aqueous solution. Cosmochemical constraints suggest that pyrrhotite, tochilinite and green rusts could be important sulfide bearing compounds found with hydrous silicates such as serpentine, and magnetite on the sea floors. In N-C-rich worlds such as Titan, sulfides such as NH4SH and possibly thiazyl compounds could be important, and sulfates are unstable. Nothing is known about the sulfur chemistry on the Uranian and Neptunian moons.

Abstract:Driven by tidal heating, Io’s extreme volcanism has created a young, impact crater–free surface dominated by hundreds of active volcanic centres. From these volcanoes erupt voluminous, low-viscosity, high-temperature silicate lavas. Volcanic plumes, from venting gas and mobilised surface ices (primarily SO2 and S), contribute to Io’s thin atmosphere. Away from volcanoes, SO2 ice on the surface alternately sublimes during the daytime and condenses during eclipses and at night, resulting in a strong day/night atmospheric dichotomy. Sunlight and radiation bombardment at high altitude breaks the gas molecules apart, leading to the formation of SO, O, O2, S, K, Na, and Cl. These atoms reside as both neutral and charged particles in clouds that are found along Io’s orbit around Jupiter.

Abstract:Io is the most volcanically-active object in the solar system. The moon ejects a tonne per second of sulphur-rich gases that fill the vast magnetosphere of Jupiter and drives million-amp electrical currents that excite strong auroral emissions. We present the case for including a detailed study of Io within Voyage 2050 either as a standalone mission or as a contribution to a NASA New Frontiers mission, possibly within a Solar System theme centred around current evolutionary or dynamical processes. A comprehensive investigation will provide answers to many outstanding questions and will simultaneously provide information on processes that have formed the landscapes of several other objects in the past. A mission investigating Io will also study processes that have shaped the Earth, Moon, terrestrial planets, outer planet moons, and potentially extrasolar planets. The aim would be simple - tracing the mass and energy flows in the Io-Jupiter system.

Abstract:We report the first results of a program to determine the longitudinal distribution of volcanic activity on Jupiter's satellite Io. Infrared measurements at 8.7, 10, and 20 micrometers have been taken at a variety of orbital longitudes: strong variation in the 8.7- and 10-micrometer flux with longitude demonstrates that infrared emission arising from volcanic hotspots on Io is strongly concentrated in a few locations. Analysis of these data suggests that the active volcanic regions observed by the Voyager experimenters are still active, particularly the region around the feature known as Loki. Another source of flux, although of somewhat smaller magnitude, is indicated on the opposite hemisphere. If these sources are the only major volcanic centers on Io, then current global heat flow estimates must be revised downward. However, heat flow from as yet unobserved longitudes, hotspots at high latitudes, and conducted heat flow must still be measured.

Abstract:Stable isotope fractionation of sulfur offers a window into Io's tidal heating history, which is difficult to constrain because Io's dynamic atmosphere and high resurfacing rates leave it with a young surface. We constructed a numerical model to describe the fluxes in Io's sulfur cycle using literature constraints on rates and isotopic fractionations of relevant processes. Combining our numerical model with measurements of the 34S/32S ratio in Io's atmosphere, we constrain the rates for the processes that move sulfur between reservoirs and model the evolution of sulfur isotopes over time. Gravitational stratification of SO2 in the upper atmosphere, leading to a decrease in 34S/32S with increasing altitude, is the main cause of sulfur isotopic fractionation associated with loss to space. Efficient recycling of the atmospheric escape residue into the interior is required to explain the 34S/32S enrichment magnitude measured in the modern atmosphere. We hypothesize this recycling occurs by SO2 surface frost burial and SO2 reaction with crustal rocks, which founder into the mantle and/or mix with mantle‐derived magmas as they ascend. Therefore, we predict that magmatic SO2 plumes vented from the mantle to the atmosphere will have lower 34S/32S than the ambient atmosphere, yet are still significantly enriched compared to solar‐system average sulfur. Observations of atmospheric variations in 34S/32S with time and/or location could reveal the average mantle melting rate and hence whether the current tidal heating rate is anomalous compared to Io's long‐term average. Our modeling suggests that tides have heated Io for >1.6 Gyr if Io today is representative of past Io.

Abstract:The extremely thin atmosphere of Jupiter's volcanic moon Io primarily consists of sulfur (S), sodium (Na), and oxygen (O) molecules that are controlled by the combination of the sublimation and volcanic outgasses. We present the first spectroscopic detection of the two rotational emission lines of acetone (CH$_{3}$COCH$_{3}$) and a single emission line of disulfur monoxide (S$_{2}$O), and carbon monoxide (CO) at frequency $\nu$ = 346.539, 346.667, 346.543, and 345.795 GHz respectively using the archival data of high-resolution Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) interferometer with band 7 observation. All molecular species are detected with $\ge$5$\sigma$ statistical significance. Jupiter's moon Io is the most volcanically active body in the solar system with a very thin and spatially variable atmosphere. The volcanic gas CH$_{3}$COCH$_{3}$, S$_{2}$O, and CO are mainly coming from volcanic plumes. The statistical column density of CH$_{3}$COCH$_{3}$ line is N(CH$_{3}$COCH$_{3}$) = 3.18$\times$10$^{15}$ cm$^{-2}$ but for the cases of S$_{2}$O and CO, the column densities are N(S$_{2}$O) = 2.63$\times$10$^{16}$ cm$^{-2}$ and N(CO) = 5.27$\times$10$^{15}$ cm$^{-2}$ respectively. The carbon monoxide gas is mainly formed by the photolysis of the volcanic gas acetone.

Abstract:Infrared observations of Io during the 1986 apparition of Jupiter indicate that a large eruptive event occurred on the leading side of Io on 7 August 1986, Universal Time. Measurements made at 4.8, 8.7, and 20 micrometers suggest that the source of the event was about 15 kilometers in radius with a model temperature of approximately 900 Kelvin. Together with previously reported events, these measurements indicate that high-temperature volcanic activity on the leading side of Io may be more frequent than previously thought. The inferred temperature is significantly above the boiling point of sulfur in a vacuum(715 Kelvin) and thus constitutes strong evidence for active silicate volcanism on the surface of Io.

Abstract:The Jovian Infrared Auroral Mapper (JIRAM) instrument aboard Juno has allowed clear, high-resolution imaging of Io's polar volcanoes. We have used data from JIRAM's M-band (4.78 micron) imager from eleven Juno orbits to construct a global map of volcanic flux. This map provides insight into the spatial distribution of volcanoes and the ways in which high- and low-latitude volcanoes differ. Using spherical harmonic analysis, we have quantitatively compared our volcanic flux map to the surface heat flow distribution expected by modeling data of Io's tidal heat deposition (de Kleer et al. 2019). Systems of bright volcanoes were confirmed at high latitudes. Our study finds that both poles are more active than previous studies have suggested, although the south pole was viewed too infrequently to establish reliable long-term trends. While none of the tidal heat flow models match well, the asthenospheric heating model agrees best with the observed volcanic flux.

Abstract:Surface modification on Jupiter's volcanically active moon, Io, has to date been attributed almost exclusively to lava emplacement and volcanic plume deposits. Here we demonstrate that wind-blown transport of sediment may also be altering the Ionian surface. Specifically, shallow subsurface interactions between lava and Io's widespread sulfur dioxide (SO$_2$) frost can produce localized sublimation vapor flows with sufficient gas densities to enable particle saltation. We calculate anticipated outgassing velocities from lava-SO$_2$ frost interactions, and compare these to the saltation thresholds predicted when accounting for the tenuous nature of the sublimated vapor. We find that saltation may occur if frost temperatures surpass 155 K. Finally we make the first measurements of the dimensions of linear features in images from the Galileo probe, previously termed "ridges", which demonstrate certain similarities to dunes on other planetary bodies. Io joins a growing list of bodies with tenuous and transient atmospheres where aeolian sediment transport may be an important control on the landscape.

Abstract:Extensive volcanism and high-temperature lavas hint at a global magma reservoir in Io, but no direct evidence has been available. We exploited Jupiter's rotating magnetic field as a sounding signal and show that the magnetometer data collected by the Galileo spacecraft near Io provide evidence of electromagnetic induction from a global conducting layer. We demonstrate that a completely solid mantle provides insufficient response to explain the magnetometer observations, but a global subsurface magma layer with a thickness of over 50 kilometers and a rock melt fraction of 20% or more is fully consistent with the observations. We also place a stronger upper limit of about 110 nanoteslas (surface equatorial field) on the dynamo dipolar field generated inside Io.
Io's polar volcanic thermal emission indicative of magma ocean and shallow tidal heating models

Abstract:The distribution of Io's volcanic activity likely reflects the position and magnitude of internal tidal heating. We use new observations of Io's polar regions by the Juno spacecraft Jovian Infrared Auroral Mapper (JIRAM) to complete near-infrared global coverage, revealing the global distribution and magnitude of thermal emission from Io's currently erupting volcanoes. We show that the distribution of volcanic heat flow from 266 active hot spots is consistent with the presence of a global magma ocean, and/or shallow asthenospheric heating. We find that Io's polar volcanoes are less energetic but about the same in number per unit area than at lower latitudes. We also find that volcanic heat flow in the north polar cap is greater than that in the south. The low volcanic advection seen at Io's poles is therefore at odds with measurements of background temperature showing Io's poles are anomalously warm. We suggest that the differences in volcanic thermal emission from Io's poles compared to that at lower latitudes is indicative of lithospheric dichotomies that inhibit volcanic advection towards Io's poles, particularly in the south polar region.

Abstract:Io's atmosphere is predominately SO2 sustained by a combination of volcanic outgassing and sublimation. The loss from the atmosphere is the main mass source for Jupiter's large magnetosphere. Previous studies attributed various transient phenomena in Io's environment and Jupiter's magnetosphere to a sudden change in the mass loss from the atmosphere supposedly triggered by a change in volcanic activity. Since the gas in volcanic plumes does not escape directly, such causal correlation would require a transient volcano-induced change in atmospheric abundance, which has never been observed so far. Here we report four observations of atmospheric SO2 and NaCl obtained with the IRAM NOEMA interferometer. These observations are compared to measurements of volcanic hot spots and Io's neutral and plasma environment. We find a stable NaCl column density in Io's atmosphere. The SO2 column density derived for December 2016 is about 30% lower compared to the period of March to April 2017. This increase in SO2 from December 2016 to March 2017 might be related to increasing volcanic activity observed at several sites in spring 2017, but the stability of the volcanic trace gas NaCl and resulting decrease in NaCl/SO2 ratio do not support this interpretation. Observed dimmings in both the sulfur ion torus and Na neutral cloud suggest rather a decrease in mass loading in the period of increasing SO2 abundance. The dimming Na brightness and stable atmospheric NaCl furthermore dispute an earlier suggested positive correlation of the sodium cloud and the hot spot activity at Loki Patara, which considerably increased in this period. The environment of Io overall appears to be in a quiescent state, preventing further conclusions. Only Jupiter's aurora morphology underwent several short-term changes, which are apparently unrelated to Io's quiescent environment or the relatively stable atmosphere.
Seasonal and longitudinal variability in Io's SO2 atmosphere from 22 years of IRTF/TEXES observations

Abstract:Between 2001 and 2023, we obtained high spectral resolution mid-infrared observations of Io using the TEXES instrument at NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility. These observations were centered at 529.8 cm-1 (18.88 {\mu}m) and include several SO2 absorption lines. By modeling the shapes and strengths of these absorption lines, we are able to determine how Io's SO2 atmospheric density varies over the 22-year time period, covering nearly two Jovian years. Previous analysis has shown that the density of Io's atmosphere on the anti-Jovian hemisphere exhibits clear seasonal temporal variability, which can be modeled as the sum of a seasonally-varying frost sublimation component and a constant component, assumed to be volcanic. The new data show that the seasonal pattern repeats during the second Jovian year, confirming the importance of sublimation support. The considerable longitudinal variability in Io's atmospheric density found in previous work is also stable over the second Jovian year with the SO2 column density on the Jupiter-facing hemisphere being 5--8 times lower than the anti-Jovian hemisphere. For the first time, we detect seasonal variability on the Jupiter-facing hemisphere as well. This can also be modeled as a combination of sublimation and a small constant source. The lower atmospheric density on the Jupiter-facing hemisphere can plausibly be explained by the daily Jupiter eclipses, which decrease the surface temperature and therefore reduce the sublimation-driven component of the atmosphere, combined with a lower level of volcanic activity directly emitting SO2 into the atmosphere.

Abstract:The composition of Io's tenuous atmosphere is poorly constrained. Only the major species SO2 and a handful of minor species have been positively identified, but a variety of other molecular species should be present, based on thermochemical equilibrium models of volcanic gas chemistry and the composition of Io's environment. This paper focuses on the spectral search for expected yet undetected molecular species (KCl, SiO, S2O) and isotopes (34SO2). We analyze a disk-averaged spectrum of a potentially line-rich spectral window around 345 GHz, obtained in 2010 at the APEX-12m antenna (Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment). Using different models assuming either extended atmospheric distributions or a purely volcanically-sustained atmosphere, we tentatively measure the KCl relative abundance with respect to SO2 and derive a range of 4x10^{-4}-8x10^{-3}. We do not detect SiO or S2O and present new upper limits on their abundances. We also present the first measurement of the 34S/32S isotopic ratio in gas phase on Io, which appears to be twice as high as the Earth and ISM reference values. Strong lines of SO2 and SO are also analyzed to check for longitudinal variations of column density and relative abundance. Our models show that, based on their predicted relative abundance with respect to SO2 in volcanic plumes, both the tentative KCl detection and SiO upper limit are compatible with a purely volcanic origin for these species.

Abstract:Jupiter's moon Io is known to host active volcanoes. In February and March 2007, the New Horizons spacecraft obtained a global snapshot of Io's volcanism. A 350-kilometer-high volcanic plume was seen to emanate from the Tvashtar volcano (62 degrees N, 122 degrees W), and its motion was observed. The plume's morphology and dynamics support nonballistic models of large Io plumes and also suggest that most visible plume particles condensed within the plume rather than being ejected from the source. In images taken in Jupiter eclipse, nonthermal visible-wavelength emission was seen from individual volcanoes near Io's sub-Jupiter and anti-Jupiter points. Near-infrared emission from the brightest volcanoes indicates minimum magma temperatures in the 1150- to 1335-kelvin range, consistent with basaltic composition.
