Abstract:During the pandemic, we filmed our neuroscience labs, and now the videos provide a great resource to flip the lab. Our lab, however, covers a wide range of complicated topics, ranging from gross anatomy, immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining, and fluorescence imaging to cockroach microscopic surgery and measuring nerve conduction velocity on worms and human subjects, and it is challenging to get students to finish watching these complicated experiments. The biggest challenge that students face while watching these experiment demonstrations is their own emotions. When we were editing the films of the labs, we did not reduce the complexity, but we explained concepts by using concepts and objects that students are already familiar with so we do not trigger anxiety. To reduce boredom, we employed three major methods: questioning, humor, and increasing the pace. To address potential anxiety or reluctance about the in-person part of the lab, we mention at the beginning of every lab session that making mistakes is completely acceptable and, as they make mistakes, we help them understand what went wrong and how to correct it. We also introduce additional activities in some lab sessions to pique their interest. For instance, we ask students to test the effects of Red Bull on crickets and investigate whether students who play more video games have higher conduction velocities in the median nerve. Thus far, our flipped lab has been quite successful in terms of maintaining video retention rates and in-person attendance rates. A notable example of the effectiveness of improved hands-on skills is the cockroach microscopic surgery. Before implementing the flipped lab, only 10% of students were able to successfully complete the surgery and acquire nerve activity recordings. With the flipped lab, 90% of students were able to obtain a recording independently.

Abstract:Objective: The aim of this project was to convert a traditional face-to-face seminar for the teaching of experimental scientific methodology to remote teaching in a timely manner due to the COVID-19 related restrictions to teaching in presence. Methodology: The main focus of the course was on flow cytometry. Basics were developed in a virtual presence phase. Specific teaching contents were taught by an interactive presentation, which came very close to the user experience of a flow cytometer and interactively illustrated the influence of different experimental conditions on the obtained results. Video sequences of authentic sample acquisitions were integrated into Adobe Captivate®. These "virtual acquisitions" were not distinguishable from the original procedure. For interpretation of the resulting diagrams, interactions were inserted, which allowed direct comparison of the obtained results. Implementation: A presentation with interactive elements and video sequences was created and used for the virtual presence phases. After publishing on a web server in HTML 5, contents were made available to the students for post-processing of learning contents by self-paced learning with full (interactive) functionality. Conclusion: Contributions elaborated by the students during the course demonstrate a learning outcome comparable to that archieved in the last years in presence mode. While implementation of this solution represented a highly time-consuming process, narrative feedback was consistently positive. Due to the short time available for implementation, no systematic evaluation could be conducted, which represents a clear limitation of this work.

Abstract:Developing robust professional networks can help shape the trajectories of early career scientists. Yet, historical inequities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields make access to these networks highly variable across academic programmes, and senior academics often have little time for mentoring. Here, we illustrate the success of a virtual Laboratory Meeting Programme (LaMP). In this programme, we matched students (mentees) with a more experienced scientist (mentors) from a research group. The mentees then attended the mentors’ laboratory meetings during the academic year with two laboratory meetings specifically dedicated to the mentee’s professional development. Survey results indicate that mentees expanded their knowledge of the hidden curriculum as well as their professional network, while only requiring a few extra hours of their mentor’s time over eight months. In addition, host laboratories benefitted from mentees sharing new perspectives and knowledge in laboratory meetings. Diversity of the mentees was significantly higher than the mentors, suggesting that the programme increased the participation of traditionally under-represented groups. Finally, we found that providing a stipend was very important to many mentees. We conclude that virtual LaMPs can be an inclusive and cost-effective way to foster trainee development and increase diversity within STEM fields with little additional time commitment.

Abstract:Cost-effective, custom home experiment kits were developed and used for remote teaching of first-semester introductory physics labs. The kit experiments were designed to match the existing onsite lab course learning goals. A revised group project approach optimized for remote use was also developed that leverages the kits. Student survey results at the end of the summer 2020 semester indicate that the critical learning goals were met, student satisfaction with the remote course was maintained, and successful collaboration via video conferencing breakout rooms was achieved.

A pandemic-resilient open-inquiry physical science lab course which leverages the Maker movement

Abstract:Without any major changes, a pilot version of a physical science lab course was able to continue when the COVID-19 crisis necessitated the abrupt suspension of on-campus education. The 'Maker Lab' course, in which students conceive and set up their own experiments using affordable microcontrollers, required students to follow the entire arc of an empirical research cycle twice. The decision for and facilitation of such open-inquiry projects was based on and warranted by the literature on teaching the process of experimental research and methods of scientific research. The flipped classroom approach was used, where contact time is devoted to discussions and the students' actual experiments were carried out independently at home or elsewhere without the in-person supervision of an instructor. Despite the COVID-19 measures, all students were able to produce interesting and successful research projects. While there were of course difficulties encountered due to the abrupt transition to online teaching, we found several counterbalancing advantages that bear consideration for inclusion even when all teaching activities can return to campus. We believe that three components in the design of the course were vital to the resilience of the course: the choice for fully open-inquiry projects, the decision to use Arduinos as measurement tools, and the flipped aspect of the instruction methods. We also include considerations for adapting these pandemic-resilient methods in other courses and programs.

Abstract:This article discusses ‘brainstorm’ interaction in a multimodal perspective. It shows how an innovation workshop facilitator is ‘doing facilitation’ by not only organizing group activities and managing turn-taking, but also drawing each group member out to participate actively and contribute to the group process. Institutional goals are transformed to individual conversational participation. Participants are helped to express their thoughts and engage in a social process of clarifying, developing and refining ideas. In the process the facilitator is socializing the participants into a particular participation framework, letting them collaborate in shaping a local community of practice. The facilitator is separating phases of activities to afford decoupling actions, creating specific local sequential environments for participants to produce particular kinds of talk, thus engaging a group of participants in a social process of collaborative idea development. The article will show how multimodal orientation to a range of semiotic resources (whiteboard, colored cards, speed markers, re-usable adhesive putty, body posture, gestures, gazes, pauses and talk) is used to manage topical talk, elicit talk from a particular person, manage speaker transition, secure progression and shifts, perform shift in participant identity and elicit talk performing particular social actions, explanations and accounts. A process is shaped in which collaboratively produced underspecified ideas are turned into ‘noticings’ in order to create slots for them to be explained and accounted for so that individual cognitive processes are made available for treatment in a social process of idea development, and selection of ideas is prioritized over discussion/rejection.

Abstract:Doctoral students in science disciplines spend countless hours learning how to conduct cutting-edge research but very little time learning to communicate the nature and significance of their science to people outside their field. To narrow this disparity, we created an unusual course titled Communicating Science for doctoral science trainees at Rutgers University. Our goal was to help students develop an advanced ability to communicate their research clearly and accurately and to emphasize its value and significance to diverse audiences. Course design included classroom instruction supplemented with improvisation, video recordings, and ample opportunity for students to practice and receive immediate, constructive feedback in a supportive environment. A multidisciplinary faculty with expertise in science, education, communication, and theater arts taught this course. PhD students came from diverse scientific disciplines, ranging from biology and chemistry to civil engineering. Students also completed a capstone project in which they worked with a professional in the academic or private sector to explore a possible career aspiration. Assessment was in the form of feedback on students' oral and poster presentations, and written abstracts about their research. Student evaluations and comments about course format and content were mostly positive and also provided input for ways to improve the course. We discovered that the diversity of scientific backgrounds among our students enhanced their ability to learn how to communicate their science to others outside their disciplines. We are leveraging the success of our initial course offering to reach other student and faculty groups at Rutgers.

Abstract:Laboratory courses are an important part of the undergraduate physics curriculum. During physics labs, students can engage in authentic, hands-on experimental practices, which can prepare them for graduate school, research laboratories, and jobs in industry. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in spring 2020, colleges and universities across the world rapidly transitioned to teaching labs remotely. In this work, we report results from a survey of physics lab instructors on how they adapted their courses in the transition to emergency remote teaching. We found that the instructors who responded to the survey faced numerous challenges when transitioning their classes to remote instruction, particularly in providing students with a similar experience to the in-person labs. In addition, we identified common themes in the instructors' responses including changing learning goals of the courses to be more concept-focused, reducing group work due to equity and technological concerns, and using a variety simulation tools, as well as report on factors that the instructors hoped to continue once they have returned to in-person instruction.

Abstract:During spring of the academic year 2020-2021, the English Didactics department of the Freie Universität Berlin offered a seminar on drama pedagogy. Given the pandemic and a syllabus which promised future teachers ‘teaching through actual classroom practice’ it was decided to take the in-person sessions between university students and grade six students online. The result of these collaborative drama lab sessions were Earth Speakr messages which, after being practiced online, were recorded in person at school in the Earth Speakr app by the English teacher, a university student assistant and the course instructor. Once uploaded, these messages become part of the global Earth Speakr artwork initiated by the artist and climate activist Olafur Eliasson. This article lays out some of the parameters, contexts and challenges of the sessions. These are complemented by individual reflections as well as outstanding questions for further research. Linguistic actions used in performative teaching, such as acting during an online guessing game or using gestures to practice pronouncing a word can have transformative effects. Even during pandemic times, there is evidence that these experiences can help learners and teachers to connect and find their own place in the social worlds they move in.
Leveraging asynchronous speaking tasks to promote willingness and confidence to speak in Spanish: A qualitative study

Abstract:This study describes the experiences of students in a flipped intermediate Spanish college class who used a video discussion digital tool to develop their confidence to speak in the foreign language. Students participated in a series of 10 speaking tasks designed based on the framework on technology-mediated tasks (Gonzalez-Lloret & Ortega, 2014) and the world-readiness standards for communicative performance of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (2015). Through semi-structured interviews and reflection journals, students shared their learning accomplishments, unveiled their inner fears in speaking skills and detailed their journey in gaining confidence to speak in Spanish. Their experiences showed that willingness to communicate and self-efficacy are driving forces that, fostered in a brave learning environment, enable students to take risks and be creative with the language. The study also presents pedagogical implications regarding the design of technology-mediated tasks and the conditions of the learning environment that can foster or hinder students’ language oral communicative skills. Implications for practice or policy: Technology-mediated tasks should be designed based on a learner-centred approach and the affordances of the tool to promote communicative competence in foreign and second language learning. Technology-mediated tasks can promote the development of confidence to use the foreign and second language more spontaneously, while allowing students to fail without being judged or penalised. Technology-mediated tasks can give students some control over their own learning process, facilitating opportunities for self-monitoring to gain confidence in speaking in the foreign or second language.

Abstract:The practice of oncology continues to evolve over time. Educators find themselves in a position where they are no longer able to teach a topic in its entirety. Moreover, the rapid expansion of information available through research and discovery in the field of oncology makes it difficult for learners to process the constant barrage of new content. Lecturers continue to impart knowledge using didactic techniques, often trying to include as much material as possible in the time permitted. The question becomes: In the face of an impossibly large field, how can one assist learners in learning, and retaining, what is most important? The science of learning continues to develop, and we now recognize that there are ways to teach that optimally facilitate the retention and application of knowledge. By using these strategies, educators can make it easier for learners to absorb and retain key information. This article will touch upon several such techniques: cognitive load optimization, analogy, contrasting cases, elaboration, and just-in-time telling. By applying these methods to didactic presentations, educators can ensure that their lessons are heard, understood, and ultimately transformed into something unforgettable.
Seeing power with a flashlight: DIY thermal sensing technology in the classroom

Abstract:This paper contributes to the growing literature on 'making and doing' in Science and Technology Studies (STS) by describing and theorizing the teaching of making and doing. We describe a collaborative do-it-yourself (DIY) technology project taught simultaneously in Canada and the United States, in sociology and public health, to undergraduates with no prior electronics experience. Students built thermal flashlights - low cost digital tools for making thermal images - and employed them to research their surrounding environments. By making and using the thermal flashlights, learners investigated power in two senses: identifying social power relationships embedded within normally unquestioned infrastructures, and exploring these infrastructures' connection to industrial forms of power, such as heat and electricity. Students and instructors came to understand how the control of power, light and temperature is vital to human-made infrastructure and environmental health threats that characterize the 21st century. Through this project, students went from being passive consumers of such power to become active investigators of their socio-technical systems by producing unique knowledge that enabled them to imagine how they might make and inhabit their environments differently. Breaking down the distinction between teaching and research, this article explores the promise of 'making and doing' in university courses to create new collaborative research platforms that could spread laterally and scale to transform social and technical infrastructures.
Communicating science to the public through video: Experiences and techniques from a Breakthrough Junior Challenge winner

Abstract:More than ever, scientists are compelled to share relevant scientific knowledge to the public in order to address misinformation, inform decision-making, increase public support for scientific ventures, or promote widespread appreciation for science. Through accessible media production technology and social media, it is now much easier for scientists to be communicators and for the public to be receivers. In this talk, I will elaborate my experiences, strategies, and lessons in video-based science communication as the sole researcher, writer, producer, and creator of two short Physics videos: (1) Feynman's Path Integrals and (2) Relativity and the Equivalence of Reference Frames. The former was awarded the Special Prize during the 2016 Breakthrough Junior Challenge. Meanwhile, the latter video was declared the Winner of the 2017 edition of the same competition, where it bested 11,000 entries from 178 countries. This second video has accumulated over 5,000,000 views across all platforms.The talk will also detail how I created the videos, how the public received and interpreted the videos' information, as well as how scientists can use video for science communication.

Abstract:This study aims to analyze the effects of experiment models and gender on scientific communication and collaboration skills. This study employed a quasi-experimental design consisting of five groups as control classes and five groups as experimental classes. The subject of this study was 327 students (168 students used HOT Lab and 159 used Multiple Skill; 69 Male and 258 Female from 18 to 22 years old) with heterogeneous skills and learning habits from five different universities representing four regions: Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi. The control class conducted activities based on the Higher-order Thinking Laboratory model, while the experimental class conducted activities based on the Multiple Skill Laboratory Activity Model. The data were collected by employing a validated instrument and were analyzed by employing a Multivariate test. This study shows that the experimental model has more significant influences on improving students' skills than gender. Specifically, the Multiple Skill Laboratory Activity Model (MSLAM) improves students’ collaboration skills better than communication skills. MSLAM explores more activities to practice collaboration skills, e.g., brainstorming, exploration, and measurement, while the activities for practicing communication skills is depended on analysis and presentation only. This study also reveals that the experiment model and gender are not suitable for concurrent analysis. This study is expected to provide methods for further researchers to optimize students’ scientific communication and collaboration skills. Furthermore, this study provides an overview for teachers to practice several thinking skills at one time.
Effects of Reducing Scaffolding in an Undergraduate Electronics Lab

Abstract:Design and scientific investigation are recognized as key components of undergraduate physics laboratory curricula. In light of this, many successful lab programs have been developed to train students to develop these abilities, and students in these programs have been shown to exhibit a higher transfer rate of scientific abilities to new situations. In this paper, I use data from an electronics class for physics majors to investigate how giving students the opportunity to design circuits --- by removing steps from traditional cookbook lab guides --- affects the students' ability to determine the function of circuits they haven't seen before. I compared post-lab quiz results from students who were given explicit procedures to those of students who were given incomplete procedures, and I found no statistically significant difference in the results of the two groups. I explore possible explanations for the null effect and recommend future research directions.

Abstract:ObjectiveThe authors sought to demonstrate the feasibility of integrating small private online course (SPOC) technology with flipped classroom techniques in order to improve neuroscience education across diverse training sites.MethodsPost-graduate medical educators used SPOC web conferencing software and video technology to implement an integrated case conference and in-depth neuroscience discussion.ResultsTen psychiatry training programs from across the USA and from two international sites took part in the conference. Feedback from participants was largely positive.ConclusionThis pilot demonstrated the feasibility of such a program and provided a diverse audience with the opportunity to engage in an interactive learning experience with expert faculty discussants. This may be a useful model for programs with limited local expertise to expand their teaching efforts in a wide range of topics.

Abstract:RELC Journal, Ahead of Print. The COVID-19 pandemic ushered in a new era of technological tools that were used by language teachers to develop their students' English language skills. As a result of the sudden shift to online instruction, teachers at the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics Academy middle school had little time to prepare and had limited resources to deliver an innovative curriculum. However, when schools returned to in-person learning and when COVID-19 relief funds were allocated to the school site to purchase new technology, these teachers gained access to more technology in their classrooms than ever before. This paper describes how teachers at this site leveraged the technological tools to achieve two goals: making the curriculum comprehensible and engaging for English learners to raise assessment scores; and using the technology to connect with their students. To achieve these goals, teachers were taught how to coalesce their tools in three ways: translating texts; digitizing their paper-based lessons; and "mirroring" input from their tablet computers to a larger screen. During an eight-week training, teachers implemented these innovations in their classrooms, reported their successes and reflected on their practice. This paper describes how four teachers used these tools inside their classrooms for innovative English language instruction.
