Abstract:The article presents an improved version of soil assessment method proposed by V.D. Ivanov (1986) and based on an equivalent score of different factors of fertility calculated as the arithmetic mean of all individual scores. The existing rating schemes s have been revised and adapted to take into account specific conditions of soil formation in intermontane depressions in the Baikal region: the complexity of hydrothermal conditions, heterogeneity of parent material, erosion hazard, shallow soil profiles, and specific features of soil organic matter. Additional evaluation criteria are introduced based on the classifications well-known in Russian soil science. The results of soil fertility assessment by this methodology tested by the example of natural and agrogenically transformed soils of the Tunka Depression (southwestern Cis-Baikalia) were acceptable, and it enabled us to identify factors limiting the land use. Disposition of croplands and the choice of crops for the study area should be performed with the account for frost hazard and insufficient atmospheric moisture at the beginning of the growing season, intensive water erosion on slopes more than 2° steep, thin humus horizons, abundance of stones in soils of piedmont plains, and salinization of hydromorphic soils on the depression bottom. It is necessary to limit the use of highly sensitive soils of sand massifs, as well as of mucky and peat soils of low moors to avoid their degradation. It seems reasonable to return to agricultural use of soils more than 50 cm thick formed on gentle slopes of lower piedmont plains and river terraces on loamy or sandy loamy parent material. Natural dark-humus and gray-humus soils and their agrogenically transformed analogs are characterized by the highest scores. The analyzed parameters should be chosen in accordance with the correlation coefficient, characterizing the relationship of soils with the crop yield in each particular area, to increase the reliability of the assessment results. This will enable the account of contribution of each diagnostic feature in the harvest.
