Abstract:As more and more companies begin to see the world as their market, brand builders look with envy upon those businesses that appear to have created global brands--brands whose positioning, advertising strategy, personality, look, and feel are in most respects the same from one country to another. Attracted by such high-profile examples of success, these companies want to globalize their own brands. But that's a risky path to follow, according to David Aaker and Erich Joachimsthaler. Why? Because creating strong global brands takes global brand leadership. It can't be done simply by edict from on high. Specifically, companies must use organizational structures, processes, and cultures to allocate brand-building resources globally, to create global synergies, and to develop a global brand strategy that coordinates and leverages country brand strategies. Aaker and Joachimsthaler offer four prescriptions for companies seeking to achieve global brand leadership. First, companies must stimulate the sharing of insights and best practices across countries--a system in which "it won't work here" attitudes can be overcome. Second, companies should support a common global brand-planning process, one that is consistent across markets and products. Third, they should assign global managerial responsibility for brands in order to create cross-country synergies and to fight local bias. And fourth, they need to execute brilliant brand-building strategies. Before stampeding blindly toward global branding, companies need to think through the systems they have in place. Otherwise, any success they achieve is likely to be random--and that's a fail-safe recipe for mediocrity.
Building brands without mass media

Abstract:Costs, market fragmentation, and new media channels that let customers bypass advertisements seem to be in league against the old ways of marketing. Relying on mass media campaigns to build strong brands may be a thing of the past. Several companies in Europe, making a virtue of necessity, have come up with alternative brand-building approaches and are blazing a trail in the post-mass-media age. In England, Nestlé's Buitoni brand grew through programs that taught the English how to cook Italian food. The Body Shop garnered loyalty with its support of environmental and social causes. Cadbury funded a theme park tied to its history in the chocolate business. Häagen-Dazs opened posh ice-cream parlors and got itself featured by name on the menus of fine restaurants. Hugo Boss and Swatch backed athletic or cultural events that became associated with their brands. The various campaigns shared characteristics that could serve as guidelines for any company hoping to build a successful brand: senior managers were closely involved with brand-building efforts; the companies recognized the importance of clarifying their core brand identity; and they made sure that all their efforts to gain visibility were tied to that core identity. Studying the methods of companies outside one's own industry and country can be instructive for managers. Pilot testing and the use of a single and continuous measure of brand equity also help managers get the most out of novel approaches in their ever more competitive world.

Abstract:Corporations must routinely ask “how should we allocate existing financial and human resources among our brands to grow shareholder value?” Firms should focus on getting the most from existing brands through better organizing and managing brands and brand inter‐relationships within the existing portfolio. “Brand architecture” is the way a company organizes, manages, and markets their brands. It must align with and support business goals and strategies. Different business strategies require different brand architectures. The two most common types are: “Branded house” architecture – employs a single (master) brand to span a series of offerings that may operate with descriptive sub‐brand names and “House of brands” architecture – each brand is stand‐alone; the sum of performance of the independent brands is greater than they would be if under a master brand. Neither type is better than the other. Some companies use a mix of both. The key is to have a well‐defined brand architecture strategy. Steps to maximize brand architecture: take stock of your brand portfolio from the perspective of customers because their view is the foundation for your strategy; do “brand relationship mapping” to identify the relationships and opportunities between brands across your portfolio. Check for these criteria: the perceived or potential credibility of the brands in that space – the perceptual license; whether or not the company currently has or can develop competencies in that space – the organizational capabilities; and whether the size and current or potential growth of the market is significant enough to merit exploitation and investment – the market opportunity. Mine the opportunities where all three criteria are met (aka, the “sweet spot”). Or use these innovative strategies if all criteria do not intersect: “pooling” and “trading,” branded partnerships’, strategic brand consolidation, brand acquisition, new brand creation. Continuously emphasize the portfolio‐wide thinking and business‐wide implications of brand‐oriented decisions. Create a brand council. When managed strategically and used as a structure to anticipate future business and brand needs, concerns, and issues, brand architecture can be the critical link to business strategy and the means to optimize growth and brand value.
What Makes Brands Elastic? The Influence of Brand Concept and Styles of Thinking on Brand Extension Evaluation

Abstract:Why are some brands more elastic than others? Prior research shows that consumers are more accepting of extensions into distant product categories for brands with prestige concepts (Rolex) than for brands with functional concepts (Timex). In this article, the authors examine consumers’ style of thinking—analytic versus holistic thinking—to better understand the elasticity of prestige versus functional brands. For functional brands, the authors find that holistic thinkers provide more favorable responses to distant extensions than analytic thinkers; however, for prestige brands, holistic and analytic thinkers respond equally favorably. Thus, analytic thinkers are identified as the roadblocks for functional brands launching distant brand extensions. To meet this challenge, the authors offer several strategies, including (1) using a subbrand (Excer wallets by Toyota) instead of a direct brand (Toyota wallets) to reduce analytic thinking; (2) using elaborational communications, which address potentially problematic features of the extension, to reduce analytic thinking; and (3) matching extension information with the consumer's style of thinking, which increases the persuasiveness of ad messages.

The deep brand: Designs for a new chapter in marketing?

Abstract:No brand model has been generally accepted across the industry as adequate, nor is there a comprehensive, theoretically grounded solution to its design, population and use. While creativity and innovation are desirable, this gap diminishes company and marketing coordination, strategies and customer-focused alignment. It has adverse effects on leadership decisions, employee and team morale, projects and processes, corporate health and investor wealth, communication and customer experience. A proper solution will meet real needs, including a full set of identity dimensions, in accord with how companies conserve organisational unity of identity while enabling due diversity of practice.1 A suggested approach to both theory and practice are outlined with their supporting scientific and business logic. ‘Deep brand’ is not confined to ‘marketing’, but includes all identity aspects, including culture and business model. It connotes a way to coherent unity in action. There is special potential for marketers to play an instrumental role in orchestrating and leveraging its management. A case study of application as the IBM Brand System concludes a critical examination of brand practice and presentation of a deeply researched and tested alternative transdisciplinary methodology and its brand laws. Proposed logic and methods draw on insights that transformed and underpin the design industry. The open source novel but proven toolset is called Virtuoso.
Who will embrace upward line extension? The role of power distance belief

Abstract:Upward line extension is a significant strategy for enterprise brand management and market expansion. However, a new status product launched by a non-status brand through upward line extension inevitably forms a competitive relationship with the status product launched by a status brand. Based on the categorization theory, this study explores the influence of status product type (non-extended status product, upward-extended status product) on consumer responses and its potential psychological mechanisms. Furthermore, it examines the moderating role of power distance belief (PDB) in the relationship between status product type and consumer responses. The results indicate that consumers develop lower product evaluations and purchase intentions for upward-extended status products compared to non-extended status products (Studies 1, 2a, 2b, and 2c). Perceived fit and signaling effectiveness mediate the effect of status product type on consumer responses (Study 1). More importantly, PDB moderates the effect of status product type on consumer responses, as high-PDB consumers respond similarly to upward-extended and non-extended status products, whereas low-PDB consumers respond more negatively to upward-extended status products compared to non-extended status products (Studies 2a, 2b, and 2c). Perceived fit and signaling effectiveness mediate the interaction effect between PDB and status product type on consumer responses (Studies 2a and 2b). This study augments the literature on vertical brand extension and PDB, and provides practical guidance for marketers intending to launch upward line extension.

Abstract:The most important assets of any business are intangible: its company name, brands, symbols, and slogans, and their underlying associations, perceived quality, name awareness, customer base, and proprietary resources such as patents, trademarks, and channel relationships. These assets, which comprise brand equity, are a primary source of competitive advantage and future earnings, contends David Aaker, a national authority on branding. Yet, research shows that managers cannot identify with confidence their brand associations, levels of consumer awareness, or degree of customer loyalty. Moreover in the last decade, managers desperate for short-term financial results have often unwittingly damaged their brands through price promotions and unwise brand extensions, causing irreversible deterioration of the value of the brand name. Although several companies, such as Canada Dry and Colgate-Palmolive, have recently created an equity management position to be guardian of the value of brand names, far too few managers, Aaker concludes, really understand the concept of brand equity and how it must be implemented. Strategic brand venturing: an intersectional idea

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to outline a growth strategy and a conceptual model for large consumer packaged goods (CPG) firms that involves venturing with brand entrepreneurs to access innovative or disruptive new brands called “strategic brand venturing” (SBV). It aims to ground the model conceptually using the intersection of three domains: entrepreneurship, strategic management, and marketing. Design/methodology/approach An emerging development among large CPG firms known for their branding and marketing prowess has been to create dedicated brand/consumer venturing units (e.g. Coca‐Cola, P&G, Nestle, Clorox, General Mills, Unilever) as a means of creating new growth horizons. The paper notes this recent development and opportunity. It offers a conceptual explanation of how to think about this using domain intersection literature and a practice‐based description of the dimensions involved in executing such a strategy. Findings The paper is conceptual and practice‐oriented. No fieldwork was conducted. However, the work is based on industry practice and a longitudinal participant observation within a Fortune 100 firm over a five‐year period. Research limitations/implications Researchers are encouraged to empirically examine this new option in further depth. Practical implications The capability dimensions needed to execute are outlined. Originality/value External corporate venturing in technology‐intensive industries is an established and growing practice. However, equity investments by large CPG corporations in entrepreneurial brand firms represents a corporate entrepreneurship opportunity that has hitherto received scant/no attention in the literature. A conceptual model is proposed based on industry practice but grounded in a novel use of domain intersection literature to encourage further action and research.

Abstract:One popular strategy for brands to grow outside of their home markets is to use line extensions. Although extensive research has examined how factors such as culture influence product acceptance across markets, far less is known regarding how such factors influence parent brand perceptions in response to an extension. This article investigates the role of one aspect of culture, consumers' thinking styles, in terms of postextension parent brand spillover effects, and considers potential implications for firms' global brand strategies, including the extension's direction (upward or downward) and parent brand concept (functional or prestige). Through two studies, one using consumer panels in the United States and India and the other set in the United States, the authors examine consumer-level differences by measuring thinking styles. Results based on both studies indicate that vertical line extension type affects analytic thinkers' reactions more than those of holistic thinkers, and parent brand image benefits (suffers) when a vertical line extension is for a functional (prestige) brand, regardless of consumers' thinking style. The authors find interesting differences in the role of thinking styles based on the particular dimension examined.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Plain language summary</h3><p>Suppliers from emerging economies have been particularly active in acquiring brands from advanced economies. We analyze changes in the global value chain of the sports shoe industry and show how hollowing out the asset bases of brand‐holding firms through increasing outsourcing has enabled the emergence of rising power firms, as well as a new brand game and a market for brands. These developments in the GVC might be a future challenge for traditional brand‐holding lead firms. We show that managers focused on branding and distribution issues were myopic toward the strategic initiatives of suppliers. Managers need to pay attention to the potential long‐term consequences of outsourcing and offshoring activities, as suppliers could become competitors or acquirers of their order‐giving firms, leading to the question: Are we approaching a state of dual GVC leadership, or do lead firms risk being kicked out by their suppliers?</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Technical summary</h3><p>We explore the emergence of rising power firms from the peripheries of global value chains. An increasing number of major brand‐holding companies from traditionally industrialized economies have been acquired by suppliers from newly industrialized economies due to some fundamental changes. First, the emergence of a market for brands makes brands more volatile. Second, continuous outsourcing and hollowing‐out of the lead firm's asset base has reduced their ability to control the GVC. Through a longitudinal case study analysis, by adopting an attention‐based view, we investigate the behaviour of the traditional lead firms. Lead firms were not only myopic to the activities of their suppliers, but their focus on downstream activities created increasing opportunity spaces upstream for rising power firms while weakening the defense capacity of brands.</p></section>

Strategies to crack well-guarded markets

Abstract:How can companies break into attractive markets, where incumbents erect many barriers to entry? To answer this question, the authors studied organizations that successfully entered the most profitable industries in the United States between 1990 and 2000. When they dissected the strategies that worked best, one common theme stood out: indirect assault. Smart newcomers don't duplicate existing business models, compete for crowded distribution channels, or go after mainstream customers right away. Instead, they attack the enemy at its weakest points; then gain competitive advantage; and later, if doing so meets their objectives, go after its strongholds. Recent battles in the soft drink industry--where brands, bottling and distribution capabilities, and shelf space are incumbents' main advantages--are a case in point. When Virgin Drinks entered the U.S. cola market in 1998, it advertised heavily and immediately tried to get into the retail outlets that stock the leading brands. Virgin has never garnered more than a 1% share of the market. Red Bull, by contrast, came on the scene in 1997 with a niche product: a carbonated energy drink. The company started by selling the drink at bars and nightclubs. After gaining a loyal following through these outlets, Red Bull elbowed its way into the corner store. In 2005 it enjoyed a 65% share of the $650 million energy drink market. Successful entrants use three basic approaches in their indirect attacks. They leverage their existing assets and resources, reconfigure their value chains, and create niches. These approaches may appear to be simple, but their magic lies in their combination. By mixing and matching them, Bryce and Dyer say, enterprises can defy half a century of economic logic and make money entering highly profitable industries. The authors use Skype, Costco, Skechers, and many other companies to illustrate their argument.

Abstract:Two studies were conducted to obtain insights on how consumers form attitudes toward brand extensions, (i.e., use of an established brand name to enter a new product category). In one study, reactions to 20 brand extension concepts involving six well-known brand names were examined. Attitude toward the extension was higher when (1) there was both a perception of “fit” between the two product classes along one of three dimensions and a perception of high quality for the original brand or (2) the extension was not regarded as too easy to make. A second study examined the effectiveness of different positioning strategies for extensions. The experimental findings show that potentially negative associations can be neutralized more effectively by elaborating on the attributes of the brand extension than by reminding consumers of the positive associations with the original brand.

Abstract:Consumers today are more likely to develop their own perceptions about brands instead of passively accepting brand-crafted messages. More than ever, these perceptions are developed through product experiences, placing them firmly at the centre of the brand experience (Sterling, G. [May 2018] ‘Survey surprise: 90% of consumers report being brand-loyal’, available at: https://marketingland.com/survey-surprise-90-of-consumers-report-being-brand-loyal-248401 [accessed July, 2020]). For a product company, a visionary brand strategy needs to anticipate shifting consumer behaviour to build a differentiated and durable product experience. But instead of taking the consumer into account as they plan for future innovation, too many brands find themselves reacting to different futures. Instead, companies can harness the methods and techniques of design and innovation strategy, a discipline that combines business strategy with consumer insights to anticipate and create robust strategies based on meaningful, future-driven product experiences. Megatrends, high-level trends that reflect evolving customer expectations, articulate what consumers are looking for in a brand experience — and what they will continue to look for over the next five to ten years. Analysis of these trends, combined with an understanding of emerging technologies and how they are simultaneously changing the way consumers experience products, are important drivers of a consumer-centric, future-driven approach that leverages tools such as forecasting, scenarios of the future, backcasting and visions of the future. This paper provides practical steps which brands can take to rethink their product strategy in support of a more powerful, more durable brand experience. But underlying all of these steps is a shift in mindset.

Abstract:Building strong brands has become a marketing priority for many organisations. The presumption is that building a strong brand yields a number of marketing advantages. In this paper, a comprehensive summary of empirical findings is provided from some of the major marketing journals that reveal how brand strength, operationalised in various ways, can create differential responses by consumers to various marketing activities — a well-accepted view of brand equity. Additionally, some underlying theoretical mechanisms on which these findings are based are identified and organised. Lastly, some current gaps in the literature are identified, and an agenda put forth for future research on the marketing advantages of strong brands.

Abstract:Research methodology The authors analyzed data and information mainly from the company's annual reports and the books written by the CEO. Case overview/synopsis How and when can a "value" brand upscale its brand image? In the wake of the financial crisis of 2007–2008, UNIQLO – Japan's street fashion brand – considered introducing a new brand collaboration. They needed to capture the attention of younger, more fashionable consumers. However, people were tightening their spending as they faced uncertainties related to their jobs and wealth. Even though UNIQLO had had a steady growth in sales for the previous 24 years, it was questionable whether it was strategically a good time to launch a premium brand collaboration. And if so, who was the right partner? High-end designer Jil Sander, fashionable New York-based Theory or emerging French "casual luxury" brand Comptoir des Cotonniers? Complexity academic level This case is about the challenges faced by a low-priced brand to collaborate with a high-end brand to enhance the brand image. It explores the important elements to take into consideration when evaluating launching collaboration using the high-end brand's name. The students will learn how to examine the risks and benefits of creating a new image for the core brand. If the students had learnt branding or brand extension before, this case can be used to teach how consumer's perception affects brand extension and the target market's impact on pricing and distribution strategies. It can be used for a marketing course at the MBA level to explore the concepts in a growing company's brand image or an undergraduate specialized course in brand management or marketing management. The students also learn how the fashion industry's supply chain management works to adapt to rapidly changing fashion trends.

Without awareness, target audiences will not be able to determine if you and your messages, products, and services are relevant to them. And without relevance, they may be aware of you and respond with “so what.” The central theme of the article is a seven-step process for creating effective brands that includes: identifying essential qualities that your audiences desire; assessing how well your audience perceives you deliver on those qualities; identifying which performance and perception gaps you want to fill; responding strategically; revising and prioritizing your vivid descriptors; developing and executing a brand communications strategy; and testing and refine your brand strategies.

Abstract:This research explored the extent to which entry order (the decision to enter a market early as a “pioneer,” or to wait and follow) determines not only market share, but other competitive factors such as position and promotion that late entrants might hope to employ to overcome a pioneer's advantages. The study analyzed data on 119 nonservice new corporate ventures (consumer and industrial) from the Profit Impact of Marketing Strategy (PIMS) research data base, STR4. Based on a review of the strategic management and marketing literatures, three hypotheses on the effects of entry order were generated and subsequently tested.The first hypothesis states that pioneers achieve higher market shares than followers. Since, a priori, the market share for the pioneer has to be larger than the market share split among later entrants, the issue is the rate at which the early entrant's market share will decrease as additional businesses enter, what we term the “degree of lateness effect.” Later entrants have the choice of being an early follower, that is entering the industry soon after the pioneers, or waiting until the industry matures (late entrants). A high degree of lateness effect would indicate that early followers would gain higher market shares than late entrants. An analysis of the data indicated that pioneers have significantly higher market shares than followers and that little degree of lateness effect existed between early and late entrants.The second hypothesis states that pioneers will achieve differentiation advantages (in such areas as product and service quality, promotion, and technological positioning) greater than followers. There is considerable theoretical and empirical evidence that pioneers are able to generate competitive advantages through name recognition, image leadership, the establishment of technical standards which make switching to other products difficult, and superior consumer information advantages due to market lead times. An analysis of the data indicated that pioneers have significant competitive advantages in product/service quality and technology over followers. The one area where pioneers did not have a competitive advantage over followers was in advertising and promotion.The third hypothesis states that followers will achieve cost advantages greater than pioneers. While learning curve theory suggests that pioneers will enjoy cost/price advantages, contrasting arguments can be made that followers can enjoy lower costs by “coattailing” on the pioneer's efforts to educate consumers, develop a dominant design, and create an infrastructure to span the gap from raw material suppliers to finished good deliveries. We suggest that because pioneers are likely to have attained differentiation advantages, followers will have only one alternative left: compete on the basis of price and become the lowest-cost producer. An analysis of the data indicates that while followers do appear to have lower prices than pioneers, followers do not have significantly lower cost structures. This result implies a lower level of profitability for a follower strategy.Overall, the results of this study advance the notion that new corporate ventures should enter as pioneers, rather than as followers. Pioneers had higher market shares and stronger competitive positions (higher quality, more differentiated products, and better service) than followers. Followers appear to have few successful competitive options available outside of promotion for gaining market share.

Abstract:This paper discusses launching an entrepreneurial venture by acquiring a once popular brand name and reviving it. Interviews were conducted with 10 executives who acquired dormant brands and successfully relaunched them into the market. Their comments suggest that, with proper planning, an entrepreneur may be able to substantially increase his or her chances of success by reviving brands, rather than spending the enormous amount of capital required to build new brand image. Conclusions suggest that nostalgia targeting is not enough; the revived brand must be repositioned to satisfy today's customer values. Evidence also suggests licensing a revived brand name to unrelated industries may prove very profitable for the entrepreneur.
