Abstract:We give necessary and sufficient conditions for Riemannian maps to be biharmonic. We also define pseudo umbilical Riemannian maps as a generalization of pseudo-umbilical submanifolds and show that such Riemannian maps put some restrictions on the base manifolds.

Abstract:f-biharmonic maps are generalizations of harmonic maps and biharmonic maps. In this paper, we give some descriptions of f-biharmonic curves in a space form. We also obtain a complete classification of proper f-biharmonic isometric immersions of a developable surface in R3 by proving that a proper f-biharmonic developable surface exists only in the case where the surface is a cylinder. Based on this, we show that a proper biharmonic conformal immersion of a developable surface into R3 exists only in the case when the surface is a cylinder. Riemannian submersions can be viewed as a dual notion of isometric immersions (i.e., submanifolds). We also study f-biharmonicity of Riemannian submersions from 3-manifolds by using the integrability data. Examples are given of proper f-biharmonic Riemannian submersions and f-biharmonic surfaces and curves.

Abstract:Inspired by the all-important conformal invariance of harmonic maps on two-dimensional domains, this article studies the relationship between biharmonicity and conformality. We first give a characterization of biharmonic morphisms, analogues of harmonic morphisms investigated by Fuglede and Ishihara, which, in particular, explicits the conditions required for a conformal map in dimension four to preserve biharmonicity and helps producing the first example of a biharmonic morphism which is not a special type of harmonic morphism. Then, we compute the bitension field of horizontally weakly conformal maps, which include conformal mappings. This leads to several examples of proper (i.e., non-harmonic) biharmonic conformal maps, in which dimension four plays a pivotal role. We also construct a family of Riemannian submersions which are proper biharmonic maps.

Abstract:In this paper, we study biharmonic Riemannian submersions from a product manifold onto a surface and obtain some local characterizations of such biharmonic maps. Our results show that when the target surface is flat, a proper biharmonic Riemannian submersion is locally a projection of a special twisted product, and when the target surface is non-flat, is locally a special map between two warped product spaces with a warping function that solves a single ODE. As a by-product, we also prove that there is a unique proper biharmonic Riemannian submersion given by the projection of a warped product onto the Euclidean plane.

Abstract:Biharmonic maps between surfaces are studied in this paper. We compute the bitension field of a map between surfaces with conformal metrics in complex coordinates. As applications, we show that a linear map from Euclidean plane into $(\mathbb{R}^2, \sigma^2dwd\bar w)$ is always biharmonic if the conformal factor $\sigma$ is bi-analytic; we construct a family of such $ \sigma$, and we give a classification of linear biharmonic maps between $2$-spheres. We also study biharmonic maps between surfaces with warped product metrics. This includes a classification of linear biharmonic maps between hyperbolic planes and some constructions of many proper biharmonic maps into a circular cone or a helicoid.

Abstract:In this paper, we study biharmonic isometric immersions of a surface into and biharmonic Riemannian submersion from 3-dimensional Berger spheres. We obtain a classification of proper biharmonic isometric immersions of a surface with constant mean curvature into Berger 3-spheres. We also give a complete classification of proper biharmonic Hopf tori in Berger 3-sphere. For Riemannian submersions, we prove that a Riemannian submersion from Berger 3-spheres into a surface is biharmonic if and only if it is harmonic.

Abstract:Inspired by the work of Ou [12,17], we study biharmonic conformal immersions of surfaces into a conformally flat 3-space. We first give a characterization of biharmonic conformal immersions of totally umbilical surfaces into a generic 3-manifold. As an application, we give a method to produce biharmonic conformal immersions into a conformally flat 3-space. We then use the method to obtain a classification of biharmonic maps in a family of conformal immersions and construct many examples of biharmonic conformal immersions from a 2-sphere into a conformal 3-sphere. Our examples include proper biharmonic conformal immersions of a 2-sphere minus a point into a conformal 3-sphere with nonconstant conformal factor and the biharmonic isometric immersion $S^2(\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}})\to S^3$ which was found in [2]. Finally, we study biharmonic conformal immersions of Hopf cylinders of a Riemannian submersion.

Abstract:BCV spaces are a family of 3-dimensional Riemannian manifolds which include six of Thurston's eight geometries. In this paper, we give a complete classification of proper biharmonic Riemannian submersions from a 3-dimensional BCV space by proving that such biharmonic maps exist only in the cases of , or . In each of these two cases, we are able to construct a family of infinitely many proper biharmonic Riemannian submersions. Our results, on one hand, extend a previous result of the authors which gave a complete classification of proper biharmonic Riemannian submersions from a 3-dimensional space form, and, on the other hand, they can be viewed as the dual study of biharmonic surfaces (i.e., biharmonic isometric immersions) in a BCV space studied in some recent literature.

Abstract:In this paper, we study Riemannian maps whose base manifolds admit a Ricci soliton and give a non-trivial example of such a Riemannian map. First, we find Riemannian curvature tensor for the base manifolds of Riemannian map $F$. Further, we obtain the Ricci tensor and calculate the scalar curvature of the base manifold. Moreover, we obtain necessary conditions for the leaves of $rangeF_\ast$ to be Ricci soliton, almost Ricci soliton, and Einstein. We also obtain necessary conditions for the leaves of $(rangeF_\ast)^\bot$ to be Ricci soliton and Einstein. Also, we calculate the scalar curvatures of $rangeF_\ast$ and $(rangeF_\ast)^\bot$ by using Ricci soliton. Finally, we study the harmonicity and biharmonicity of such a Riemannian map. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for such a Riemannian map between Riemannian manifolds to be harmonic. We also obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for a Riemannian map from a Riemannian manifold to a space form that admits Ricci soliton to be harmonic and biharmonic.

Biharmonic Hypersurfaces in Euclidean Spaces

Abstract:An isometric immersion $X: \Sigma^n \longrightarrow \mathbb{E}^{n+1}$ is biharmonic if $\Delta^2 X = 0$, i.e. if $\Delta H =0$, where $\Delta$ and $H$ are the metric Laplacian and the mean curvature vector field of $\Sigma^n$ respectively. More generally, biconservative hypersurfaces (BCH) are isometric immersions for which only the tangential part of the biharmonic equation vanishes. We study and construct BCH that are holonomic, i.e. for which the principal curvature directions define an integrable net, and we deduce that $\Sigma^n$ is a holonomic biharmonic hypersurface iff it is minimal.

Abstract:Motivated by the beautiful theory and the rich applications of harmonic conformal immersions and conformal immersions of constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces, we study biharmonic conformal immersions of surfaces into a generic 3-manifold. We first derive an invariant equation for such immersions, we then try to answer the question, "what surfaces can be biharmonically conformally immersed into Euclidean 3-space?" We prove that a circular cylinder is the only CMC surface that can be biharmonically conformally immersed into a Euclidean 3-space; We obtain a classification of biharmonic conformal immersions of complete CMC surfaces into a Euclidean 3-space and a hyperbolic 3-spaces. We also study rotational surfaces that can be biharmonically conformally immersed into a Euclidean 3-space and prove that a circular cone can never such an immersion.

Abstract:A submanifold $\phi:M\to \mathbb E^{m}$ is called {\it biharmonic} if it satisfies $\Delta^{2}\phi=0$ identically, according to the author. On the other hand, G.-Y. Jiang studied biharmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds as critical points of the bienergy functional, and proved that biharmonic maps $\varphi$ are characterized by vanishing of bitension $\tau_{2}$ of $\varphi$. During last three decades there has been a growing interest in the theory of biharmonic submanifolds and biharmonic maps.

$f$-Biharmonic hypersurfaces into a conformally flat space

Abstract:We first study $f$-biharmonicity of totally umbilical hypersurfaces in a generic Riemannian manifold and then prove that any totally umbilical proper $f$-biharmonic hypersurface in a nonpositively curved manifold has to be noncompact. We also explore $f$-biharmonicity of totally umbilical hyperplanes in a conformally flat space. Secondly, we construct $f$-biharmonic surfaces and biharmonic conformal immersions of the associated surfaces into a conformall flat 3-space and also give a complete classification of $f$-biharmonic surfaces of nonzero constant mean curvature in 3-space forms. Finally, we especially investigate $f$-biharmonicity of hypersurfaces into a conformally flat space of negative sectional curvature. We show that any totally umbilical $f$-biharmonic surface of a 3-manifold with nonpositve sectional curvature is minimal whilst there are proper $f$-biharmonic $m$-dimensional submanifolds with $m\geq3$ and $m\neq4$ into nonpositvely curved manifolds.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce bi-slant Riemannian maps from Riemannian manifolds to Kenmotsu manifolds, which are the natural generalizations of invariant, anti-invariant, semi-invariant, slant, semi-slant and hemi-slant Riemannian maps, with nontrivial examples. We study these maps and give some curvature relations for $(rangeF_*)^\perp$. We construct Chen-Ricci inequalities, DDVV inequalities, and further some optimal inequalities involving Casorati curvatures from bi-slant Riemannian manifolds to Kenmotsu space forms.
