Abstract:Described is an experiment in which a smartphone was caused to move at steady state in a vertical plane, on a path that was nearly circular. During a time interval of data acquisition that encompassed multiple orbits, the acceleration of the phone was measured by means of its internal accelerometer. A subsequent analysis of the data that was collected shows reasonable agreement between experiment and a simple theory of the motion.

Abstract:Modern mobile phones contain a three-axis microelectromechanical system (MEMS) gyroscope, capable of taking accurate measurements of the angular velocity along the three principal axes of the phone with a sampling rate of 100 Hz or better. If the phone is tossed in the air, then, neglecting air resistance, it is in free rotation (rotation in the absence of a torque) with respect to its centre of mass, and the phone's gyroscope can be used to record the rotational dynamics. This enables experimental investigation of free rotation. In this paper, we use a mobile phone to demonstrate the steady states for rotation of the phone about two of its principal axes, and the instability in rotation about the third corresponding to the intermediate moment of inertia. We also show the approximate conservation of angular momentum and rotational kinetic energy during motion in the air, and compare the data with numerical solution of Euler's equations for free rotation. Our results demonstrate the capability of smartphones for investigating free rotation, and should be of interest to college and university teachers developing "at home" physics labs for remote learning.

Abstract:Vibration energy harvesting is a promising approach to provide wireless sensors and portable electronics with sustainable power by converting ambient kinetic energy into expected electrical energy. As one of the most fundamental mechanical oscillators, pendulums are restored by gravity rather than elastic elements and have drawn a number of research interests in developing vibration energy harvesters in recent years due to their simple and reliable structures. This paper comprehensively reviews the state-of-the-art progress of the pendulumbased energy harvesting. The pendulum mechanisms for energy harvesting such as single-pendulum configurations, multi-pendulum configurations, and pendulums with modulation mechanisms are elaborated and discussed. The integrations of electromagnetic, piezoelectric, triboelectric, and hybrid transducers are characterized and compared. The applications of the pendulums in harvesting energy from ocean wave, vehicle motion, human motion, structural vibration, and flow-induced vibration are reviewed. Finally, the challenging issues and future trends of this technology are summarized based on the progress to date.
WindCompass: Determine Wind Direction Using Smartphones.

Abstract:Because of the rich set of sensors, smartphones have demonstrated their versatility in environmental awareness. Already a smartphone can act as a compass, a barometer, and a pedometer, but cannot behave as an anemoscope to measure the wind direction yet, which is useful to many outdoor activities. In this paper, we propose a creative approach to identify the wind direction purely using on-board sensors of a smartphone, i.e., a microphone and an orientation sensor. Our approach relies on the observation that the strength of the noises generated by wind blowing towards the microphone is symmetric to the incident angle of wind, and the symmetrical axis represents the wind direction. Thus, we built an app (called WindCompass) that lets user rotate a phone while recording acoustic signals to determine the wind direction. Granted that rotation velocities and background noises will affect the accuracy, we utilize noise filtering and symmetric restoring schemes to process the recording and propose a circular auto- convolution algorithm to identify the symmetrical axis. The algorithm is light enough to be implemented in smartphones and robust to modest measurement errors. Our experiments show that WindCompass achieves an average error less than 3o in a well-controlled motion, less than 10o for free motion, and less than 18o at a lake side, which is smaller than the range of sixteen principal bearings of wind direction commonly used in meterological observations.
AccelPrint: Imperfections of Accelerometers Make Smartphones Trackable

Abstract:As mobile begins to overtake the fixed Internet access, ad networks have aggressively sought methods to track users on their mobile devices. While existing countermeasures and regulation focus on thwarting cookies and various device IDs, this paper submits a hypothesis that smartphone/tablet accelerometers possess unique fingerprints, which can be exploited for tracking users. We believe that the fingerprints arise from hardware imperfections during the sensor manufacturing process, causing every sensor chip to respond differently to the same motion stimulus. The differences in responses are subtle enough that they do not affect most of the higher level functions computed on them. Nonetheless, upon close inspection, these fingerprints emerge with consistency, and can even be somewhat independent of the stimulus that generates them. Measurements and classification on 80 standalone accelerometer chips, 25 Android phones, and 2 tablets, show precision and recall upward of 96%, along with good robustness to realworld conditions. Utilizing accelerometer fingerprints, a crowdsourcing application running in the cloud could segregate sensor data for each device, making it easy to track a user over space and time. Such attacks are almost trivial to launch, while simple solutions may not be adequate to counteract them.

Abstract:Acceleration sensors built into smartphones, i-pads or tablets can conveniently be used in the physics laboratory. By virtue of the equivalence principle, a sensor fixed in a non-inertial reference frame cannot discern between a gravitational field and an accelerated system. Accordingly, acceleration values read by these sensors must be corrected for the gravitational component. A physical pendulum was studied by way of example, and absolute acceleration and rotation angle values were derived from the measurements made by the accelerometer and gyroscope. Results were corroborated by comparison with those obtained by video analysis. The limitations of different smartphone sensors are discussed.

Abstract:The Wilberforce pendulum is a great experience for illustrating important properties of coupled oscillatory systems, such as normal modes and beat phenomena, in physics courses. A helical spring attached to a mass comprises this simple but colorful device that features longitudinal and torsional oscillations, catching the eye of students and teachers, and offering a fantastic environment to study coupled oscillations at qualitative and quantitative levels. However, the experimental setups that are commonly used to simultaneously acquire both oscillation types can be cumbersome and/or costly, often requiring two synchronised cameras, or motion sensors and photo-gates integrated by an expensive analog-to-digital converter. Here, we show that a smartphone can be the perfect device for recording the oscillations of a Wilberforce pendulum composed of just an educational helical spring and a can. Our setup employs a smartphone's accelerator and gyroscope to acquire data from the longitudinal and torsional oscillations, respectively. This setup can successfully record both normal modes and beats. Furthermore, we show that our experimentally obtained time-series and power spectra are in great agreement with simulations of the motion equations. In addition, we critically analyse how to set the initial conditions to observe both normal modes and beats. We believe our study contributes to bring the striking physics of the Wilberforce pendulum closer to undergraduate classrooms with low-cost, highly-accessible materials.

Abstract:This study presents an innovative methodology to augment the accuracy of gravitational acceleration (g) measurements in free fall experiments. Employing smartphones and integrating mechanical switches, our approach utilizes a built-in microphone for precise time measurements during the initiation of free fall. A meticulously designed mechanical switch controls the release of a steel sphere, triggering the timer upon the initiation of descent. Our experimental outcomes showcase a commendable congruence between the calculated g value and the locally accepted reference value, pinpointing g at 9.8274 ± 0.01 m/s2. A salient feature of our method is the utilization of the smartphone’s onboard microphone sensor, offering superior convenience to conventional sensor-based methodologies that require additional equipment. Additionally, our study introduces the seamless integration of open-source software on smartphones, facilitating the direct display and analysis of sound parameters. This integration streamlines the experimental process, contributing to the ongoing endeavors aimed at enhancing accuracy in free fall experiments. Our findings underscore the potential of smartphones and mechanical switches as accessible and effective tools in advancing physics education and scientific investigations.

Abstract:Over the past couple of decades, mobile devices have become ubiquitous items in our daily lives. Companies continuously add innovative features that make them more affordable and easy to use. This success in mobile technology has prompted educators and instructors to utilize these gadgets to boost the teaching-learning process by changing the traditional classroom to one that is interactive and engaging. For instance, there is strong potential for using mobile technology in physics education due to the different kinds of sensors that these devices have that make them unique and well-suited for experimentation in places where learning occurs naturally; a simple pendulum is a good example as it can be set up easily and with minimum material. Despite the remarkable number of apps available, only a handful of them have been developed for undergraduate physics education, the majority are virtual labs, and others acquire data in real time but need to be exported to a computer for analysis. By this token, we set out to build an app with matlab for reading the acceleration sensor of a mobile phone in real time when it is used as a pendulum's bob, and to obtain paramount physical parameters such as position, velocity, acceleration, and damping constant. The app empowers instructors and learners with graphical visualizations and with an immersive experience on how the experimental data and the theoretical models of oscillatory motion interact, and keeps teachers and students away from the hassle of using rarely available laboratory equipment and virtual simulations.

Abstract:Smartphone is a powerful internet connected computer packed with internal sensors that measure sound, light, acceleration and magnetic field strength. Physics teachers can use them as measurement devices to demonstrate science concepts and promote the joy of learning. Some research has also shown the benefits of using smartphones for teaching and learning physics. This article aims to extend mobile phone research with our open source apps and low-cost experimental design. The three experiments that we designed include radioactivity, line spectrum, standing sound wave and polarization of light. Students are able to conduct experiments and collect data easily without using bulky data loggers or laptops. Substituting a data logger with a smartphone will mean that every student can possess his/her own measuring tool inside and outside the classroom, instead of having to share with a large group of students in a scheduled lab. By empowering the students to conduct their own experiments and collect data, the use of the smartphone as a tool aims to support student learning anytime and anywhere, igniting greater joy of learning

Abstract:Based on the principle of "Measurement of Rigid Body Rotational Inertia Experiment",we conducted the calculations and measurements of the moment of inertia of mobile phone and Coriolis acceleration and simulate the motion trajectory of the mobile,by utilizing the built-in Bosch acceleration sensor and gyroscopes of iPhone as the measurement tools.By taking advantages of Python programming language,we painted the change relationships beteen the mobile's three-dimensional acceleration and the time.Then,we imported its internal data to the Matlab to proceed the median filtering and Kanman filtering performance,for the purpose of filtering the noise caused by the shake and wobble of the phone.At last,we compared the experimental data results with the theoretical values.Results show the superiority of this kind of experimental method.In summary,built-in sensors in mobile phones was used instead of the traditional lab equipments in university physics experiments,which could be a kind of supplementary methods to the modern teaching.

Abstract:Nowadays, smartphones play an important role in the physics laboratory as well as in Arduino-based sensors. Some recent examples include the analysis of acoustic experiments with mobile devices, mechanics experiments such as those on linear and circular motion as well as simple/damped harmonic motion. Smart phones can accurately record experimental data using internal sensors (e.g., accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer) via appropriate applications (apps), such as phyphox, SensorLog, and SensorKineticsPro. Moreover, students are familiar with using smartphones and these apps, making these experiments interesting and easy for them to perform. The coefficient of static/kinetic friction can be measured using smartphone sensors, as seen in previous reports. Typically, the coefficient of kinetic friction can be determined by measuring the acceleration of a sliding object (smartphone) on an inclined or horizontal plane. In this paper, we propose alternative methods to measure the coefficient of kinetic friction between a smartphone and paper in linear and circular motions using the smartphone's sensors. In the experiment, the acceleration of the sliding object (smartphone) is measured using the linear motion method, while its angular speed is measured using the circular motion method. The experimental data are then sent to the user for analysis to determine the coefficient of kinetic friction. The results obtained from the linear motion method are in good agreement with those obtained from the circular motion method.

Abstract:Smartphone integration for high school students has significant potential in physics learning. This research aims to analyze smartphone sensor data in the context of physics experiments carried out at traveling carnivals. This research uses experimental methods to compare smartphone sensor data collected via the Phyphox application with video analysis data obtained using Tracker software. The research results show the effectiveness of smartphone sensors in several carnival games, including simple leg swings, bicycle spins, kora-kora vehicles, and merry-go-rounds. Smartphone sensors can show graphs of simple harmonic motion, angular velocity, and centripetal acceleration on the game vehicle. However, limitations arise in the case of Ferris wheels and mini Ferris wheels, where smartphone sensors show reduced effectiveness caused by the instability of passenger seats during the ride. This research suggests avenues for further exploration by computing physical quantity values derived from smartphone sensor data, offering insights into potential improvements and applications in dynamic environments such as theme parks.

Abstract:Abstract Experimenting is a basic skill that science students must have. Experimental activities are generally carried out in the laboratory. But by using a smartphone, many experiments can be done outside the laboratory. This research is an example of an experiment using a smartphone that can be carried out outside the laboratory. This study aims to measure the coefficient of marbles restitution through a simple experiment assisted by a smartphone. Marbles are dropped from a certain height, the Phyphox application on a smartphone will record experimental data through a sound sensor. Experimental data recorded through a smartphone is used to analyze the coefficient of restitution and mechanical energy of marble during a collision with the floor. The experimental results show that smartphones can be used to determine the coefficient of restitution and mechanical energy as an experimental tool. We hope that this experiment will be an alternative method for lecturers or physics teachers to demonstrate bouncing objects to determine the coefficient of restitution and mechanical energy loss.
A purely geometrical method of determining the location of a smartphone accelerometer

Abstract:In a paper ( posthumously ) co-authored by Isaac Newton himself, the primacy of geometric notions in pedagogical expositions of centripetal acceleration has been clearly asserted. In the present paper we demonstrate how this pedagogical prerogative can inform the design of an experiment involving an accelerometer-equipped smartphone rotating uniformly in a horizontal plane. Specifically, the location of the sensor itself within the body of the smartphone will be determined using a technique that is purely geometrical in nature, relying on nothing more than the notion that centripetal accelerations are centrally-pointing. The complete absence of algebraic manipulations obliges students to focus exclusively on the development of their geometrical reasoning abilities. In particular, it provides a healthy challenge for those algebraically-accomplished students for whom equations, calculations and data tables represent a means of avoiding a direct confrontation with the imposing spectre of material that is otherwise purely conceptual in nature.

Toward Structural Health Monitoring with the MyShake Smartphone Network

Abstract:The field of structural health monitoring (SHM) faces a fundamental challenge related to accessibility. While analytical and empirical models and laboratory tests can provide engineers with an estimate of a structure's expected behavior under various loads, measurements of actual buildings require the installation and maintenance of sensors to collect observations. This is costly in terms of power and resources. MyShake, the free seismology smartphone app, aims to advance SHM by leveraging the presence of accelerometers in all smartphones and the wide usage of smartphones globally. MyShake records acceleration waveforms during earthquakes. Because phones are most typically located in buildings, a waveform recorded by MyShake contains response information from the structure in which the phone is located. This represents a free, potentially ubiquitous method of conducting critical structural measurements. In this work, we present preliminary findings that demonstrate the efficacy of smartphones for extracting the fundamental frequency of buildings, benchmarked against traditional accelerometers in a shake table test. Additionally, we present seven proof-of-concept examples of data collected by anonymous and privately owned smartphones running the MyShake app in real buildings, and assess the fundamental frequencies we measure. In all cases, the measured fundamental frequency is found to be reasonable and within an expected range in comparison with several commonly used empirical equations. For one irregularly shaped building, three separate measurements made over the course of four months fall within 7% of each other, validating the accuracy of MyShake measurements and illustrating how repeat observations can improve the robustness of the structural health catalog we aim to build.

Abstract:Smartphones and tablets are an integral part of our daily lives, and their capabilities extend well beyond communication and entertainment. With a broad choice of built-in sensors, using these mobile devices as experimental tools (MDETs) allows for a many different measurements, covering several fields of physics (mechanics, acoustics and waves, magnetism, optics, etc.). Building on this development, the present contribution is about exploring the potential of MDETs in physics undergraduate research. Two examples related to acoustics (bottle Helmholtz resonator, singing glasses) will be discussed in detail, and four further possibilities are referred to as perspectives. Results of these student research projects are encouraging throughout (accuracy, agreement with theory), in many cases providing a basis for further improvements and insight. Additionally, it is argued that these examples provide a "proof of concept" that the use of smartphones for experimental projects can mobilize and stimulate among students the educational potential of "higher order thinking skills" (HOTs) widely discussed in the literature on undergraduate research, such as autonomy, curiosity, creativity, and others.
