Such extensions are the best possible in the same sense as that of the Iyengar inequality. Abstract:We present some sufficient conditions ensuring the upper semicontinuity and the continuity of the Bregman projection operator ΠCg and the relative projection operator PCg in terms of the D-approximate (weak) compactness for a nonempty closed set C in a Banach space X. We next present certain sufficient conditions as well as equivalent conditions for the convexity of a Chebyshev subset of a Banach space X. Our results extend the corresponding results of [H.H. Bauschke, X.F. Wang, J. Ye and X. M. Yuan, Bregman distances and Chebyshev sets, J. Approx. Theory 159 (2009) 3–25] to infinite dimensional spaces.
The error of Chebyshev approximations on shrinking domains

Abstract:Previous works show convergence of rational Chebyshev approximants to the Padé approximant as the underlying domain of approximation shrinks to the origin. In the present work, the asymptotic error and interpolation properties of rational Chebyshev approximants are studied in such settings. Namely, the point-wise error of Chebyshev approximants is shown to approach a Chebyshev polynomial multiplied by the asymptotically leading order term of the error of the Padé approximant, and similar results hold true for the uniform error and Chebyshev constants. Moreover, rational Chebyshev approximants are shown to attain interpolation nodes which approach scaled Chebyshev nodes in the limit. Main results are formulated for interpolatory best approximations and apply for complex Chebyshev approximation as well as real Chebyshev approximation to real functions and unitary best approximation to the exponential function.

Abstract:We present a simple proof of some interpolation inequalities between Hölder and Lebesgue's spaces. As an example, to demonstrate the simplicity of their applications to nonlinear PDE, we give also a simple proof of an a-priory estimate in a smooth Hölder class for a solution to some quasilinear parabolic initial boundary value problem.

Abstract:Chebyshev interpolation is a highly effective, intensively studied method and enjoys excellent numerical properties which provides tremendous application potential in mathematical finance. The interpolation nodes are known beforehand, implementation is straightforward and the method is numerically stable. For efficiency, a sharp error bound is essential, in particular for high-dimensional applications. For tensorized Chebyshev interpolation, we present an error bound that improves existing results significantly.

Abstract:The idea of the restricted mean has been used to establish a significantly improved version of Markov's inequality that does not require any new assumptions. The result immediately extends on Chebyshev's inequalities and Chernoff's bound. The improved Markov inequality yields a bound that is hundreds or thousands of times more accurate than the original Markov bound for high quantiles in the most prevalent and diverse situations. The Markov inequality benefits from being model-independent, and the long-standing issue of its imprecision is solved. Practically speaking, avoidance of model risk is decisive when multiple competing models are present in a real-world situation.

Abstract:We consider conic inequality systems of the type$F(x)\ge_K 0$, with approximate solution $x_0$ associated to a parameter $\tau$,where $F$ is a twice Fréchet differentiable function between Hilbert spaces $X$ and $Y$, and$\ge_K$ is the partial order in $Y$ defined by anonempty convex (not necessarily closed) cone $K\subseteq Y$.We prove that, under the suitable conditions,the system $F(x)\ge_K 0$is solvable, and the ratio of the distance from $x_0$ to the solution set $S$ over the distance from $F(x_0)$ to the cone $K$ has anupper bound given explicitlyin terms of $\tau$ and $x_0$. We show that the upper bound is sharp.Applications to analytic function inequality/equality systems on Euclidean spaces are given,and the corresponding results of Dedieu [ SIAM J. Optim. , 11 (2000), pp. 411--425] are extended and significantly improved.

Abstract:Using the result of the error estimate of the simple extended Newton method established in the present paper for solving abstract inequality systems, we study the error bound property of approximate solutions of abstract inequality systems on Banach spaces with the involved function F being Fréchet differentiable and its derivative F^' satisfying the center-Lipschitz condition (not necessarily the Lipschitz condition) around a point x 0 . Under some mild conditions, we establish results on the existence of the solutions, and the error bound properties for approximate solutions of abstract inequality systems. Applications of these results to finite/infinite systems of inequalities/equalities on Banach spaces are presented and the error bound properties of approximate solutions of finite/infinite systems of inequalities/equalities are also established. Our results extend the corresponding results in [ 3 , 18 , 19 ].

Abstract:Using the error bound results established in the present paper for approximate solutions, we study the stability issues when perturbed by possibly nonaffine smooth maps E for the abstract inequality system F >=(K) 0 defined by a (possible nonclosed) convex cone K and a Frechet differentiable function F satisfying the (extended) weak gamma-condition. We provide some sufficient conditions, in terms of the information at a solution x(0), for ensuring the lower semicontinuity and/or the Lipschitz-like continuity at x(0) of the solution mapping for the perturbed system F + E >=(K) 0 with smooth perturbation E. Explicit upper bounds of the Lipschitz-like moduli are also provided.
Cylindrical estimates for the Cheeger constant and applications

Abstract:We prove a lower bound for the Cheeger constant of a cylinder $\Omega\times (0,L)$, where $\Omega$ is an open and bounded set. As a consequence, we obtain existence of minimizers for the shape functional defined as the ratio between the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian and the $p$-th power of the Cheeger constant, within the class of bounded convex sets in any $\mathbb{R}^N$. This positively solves open conjectures raised by Parini (J. Convex Anal. (2017)) and by Briani-Buttazzo-Prinari (Ann. Mat. Pura Appl. (2023)).

Some results on existence are established, in addition to characterization conditions of Kolmogorov type and also of alternation type. Lower Bounds for Weighted Chebyshev and Orthogonal Polynomials

Abstract:We derive optimal asymptotic and non-asymptotic lower bounds on the Widom factors for weighted Chebyshev and orthogonal polynomials on compact subsets of the real line. In the Chebyshev case we extend the optimal non-asymptotic lower bound previously known only in a handful of examples to regular compact sets and a large class weights. Using the non-asymptotic lower bound, we extend Widom's asymptotic lower bound for weights bounded away from zero to a large class of weights with zeros including weights with strong zeros and infinitely many zeros. As an application of the asymptotic lower bound we extend Bernstein's 1931 asymptotics result for weighted Chebyshev polynomials on an interval to arbitrary Riemann integrable weights with finitely many zeros and to some continuous weights with infinitely many zeros. In the case of orthogonal polynomials, we derive optimal asymptotic and non-asymptotic lower bound on arbitrary regular compact sets for a large class of weights in the non-asymptotic case and for arbitrary Szegő class weights in the asymptotic case, extending previously known bounds on finite gap and Parreau--Widom sets.

Constrained mock-Chebyshev least squares approximation for Hermite interpolation

Abstract:This paper addresses the challenge of function approximation using Hermite interpolation on equally spaced nodes. In this setting, standard polynomial interpolation suffers from the Runge phenomenon. To mitigate this issue, we propose an extension of the constrained mock-Chebyshev least squares approximation technique to Hermite interpolation. This approach leverages both function and derivative evaluations, resulting in more accurate approximations. Numerical experiments are implemented in order to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper has two parts. In the first one we study the maximum number of zeros of a function of the form f (k)K (k) + g (k) E (k), where k is an element of (-1,1), f and g are polynomials, and K (k) = integral(0)(pi/ 2) dtheta/root1-k(2) sin(2) theta and E(k) = integral(0)(pi/2) root1-k(2) sin(2) thetadtheta are the complete normal elliptic integrals of the first and second kinds, respectively. In the second part we apply the first one to obtain an upper bound for the number of limit cycles which appear from a small polynomial perturbation of the planar isochronous differential equation (z)over dot = iz + z(3), where z = x + iy is an element of C.
Exploring Chebyshev Polynomial Approximations: Error Estimates for Functions of Bounded Variation

Abstract:Approximation theory plays a central role in numerical analysis, undergoing continuous evolution through a spectrum of methodologies. Notably, Lebesgue, Weierstrass, Fourier, and Chebyshev approximations stand out among these methods. However, each technique possesses inherent limitations, underscoring the critical importance of selecting an appropriate approximation method tailored to specific problem domains. This article delves into the utilization of Chebyshev polynomials at Chebyshev nodes for approximation. For sufficiently smooth functions, the partial sum of Chebyshev series expansion offers optimal polynomial approximation, rendering it a preferred choice in various applications such as digital signal processing and graph filters due to its computational efficiency. In this article, we focus on functions of bounded variation, which find numerous applications across mathematical physics, hyperbolic conservations, and optimization. We present two optimal error estimations associated with Chebyshev polynomial approximations tailored for such functions. To validate our theoretical assertions, we conduct numerical experiments. Additionally, we delineate promising future avenues aligned with this research, particularly within the realms of machine learning and related fields.

Abstract:Given a compact subset of a Banach space, the Chebyshev center problem consists of finding a minimal circumscribing ball containing the set. In this article we establish a numerically tractable algorithm for solving the Chebyshev center problem in the context of optimal learning from a finite set of data points. For a hypothesis space realized as a compact but not necessarily convex subset of a finite-dimensional subspace of some underlying Banach space, this algorithm computes the Chebyshev radius and the Chebyshev center of the hypothesis space, thereby solving the problem of optimal recovery of functions from data. The algorithm itself is based on, and significantly extends, recent results for near-optimal solutions of convex semi-infinite problems by means of targeted sampling, and it is of independent interest. Several examples of numerical computations of Chebyshev centers are included in order to illustrate the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a centered random vector in a finite dimensional real inner product space $\mathcal{E}$. For a subset $C$ of the ambient vector space $V$ of $\mathcal{E}$ and $x,\,y\in V$, write $x\preceq_C y$ if $y-x\in C$. When $C$ is a closed convex cone in $\mathcal{E}$, then $\preceq_C$ is a pre-order on $V$, whereas if $C$ is a proper cone in $\mathcal{E}$, then $\preceq_C$ is actually a partial order on $V$. In this paper we give sharp Cantelli's type inequalities for generalized tail probabilities like $\text{Pr}\{X\succeq_C b\}$ for $b\in V$. These inequalities are obtained by ``scalarizing'' $X\succeq_C b$ via cone duality and then by minimizing the classical univariate Cantelli's bound over the scalarized inequalities.

On the Cheeger inequality in Carnot-Carathéodory spaces

Abstract:We generalize the Cheeger inequality, a lower bound on the first nontrivial eigenvalue of a Laplacian, to the case of geometric sub-Laplacians on rank-varying Carnot-Carathéodory spaces and we describe a concrete method to lower bound the Cheeger constant. The proof is geometric, and works for Dirichlet, Neumann and mixed boundary conditions. One of the main technical tools in the proof is a generalization of Courant's nodal domain theorem, which is proven from scratch for Neumann and mixed boundary conditions. Carnot groups and the Baouendi-Grushin cylinder are treated as examples.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, Volume 62, Issue 1, Page 229-247, February 2024. We propose two novel unbiased estimators of the integral [math] for a function [math], which depend on a smoothness parameter [math]. The first estimator integrates exactly the polynomials of degrees [math] and achieves the optimal error [math] (where [math] is the number of evaluations of [math]) when [math] is [math] times continuously differentiable. The second estimator is also optimal in terms of convergence rate and has the advantage of being computationally cheaper, but it is restricted to functions that vanish on the boundary of [math]. The construction of the two estimators relies on a combination of cubic stratification and control variates based on numerical derivatives. We provide numerical evidence that they show good performance even for moderate values of [math].
