Abstract:This article reviews our view on how chiral symmetry, its pattern of breaking and restoration under extreme conditions manifest themselves in the nucleon, nuclei, nuclear matter and dense hadronic matter. We discuss how first-principle (QCD) calculations of the properties of finite nuclei can be effectuated by embedding the “standard nuclear physics approach (SNPA)” into the framework of effective field theories of nuclei that incorporate chiral dynamics and then exploit the predictive power of the theory to accurately compute such solar neutrino processes as the proton–proton fusion and the “hep” process and such cosmological nucleosynthesis process as thermal neutron–proton capture etc. The Brown–Rho (BR) scaling that implements chiral symmetry property of baryon-rich medium is re-interpreted in terms of “vector manifestation” of hidden local symmetry à la Harada–Yamawaki. We present a clear direct evidence and a variety of indirect evidences for BR scaling in nuclear processes at normal nuclear matter density probed by weak and electromagnetic fields and at higher density probed by heavy-ion collisions and compact-star observables. We develop the notion of “broadband equilibration” in heavy-ion processes and sharpen the role of strangeness in the formation of compact stars and their collapse into black-holes. We revisit the Cheshire Cat phenomenon first discovered in the skyrmion structure of baryons and more recently revived in the form of “quark–hadron continuity” in mapping low-density structure of hadrons to high-density structure of quarks and gluons and argue once more for the usefulness and power of effective field theories based on chiral symmetry under extreme conditions. It is shown how color–flavor locking in terms of QCD variables and hidden local symmetry in terms of hadronic variables can be connected and how BR scaling fits into this “continuity” scheme exhibiting a novel aspect of the Cheshire Cat phenomenon.

The long and winding road from chiral effective Lagrangians to nuclear structure

Abstract:I review the chiral dynamics of nuclear physics. In the first part, I discuss the new developments in the construction of the forces between two, three and four nucleons which have been partly carried out to fifth order in the chiral expansion. It is also shown that based on these forces in conjunction with the estimation of the corresponding theoretical uncertainties, the need for three-nucleon forces in few nucleon systems can be unambiguously established. I also introduce the lattice formulation of these forces, which allow for truly ab initio calculations of nuclear structure and reactions. I present some pertinent results of the nuclear lattice approach. Finally, I discuss how few-nucleon systems and nuclei can be used to explore symmetries and physics within and beyond the Standard Model.

Recent advances in chiral EFT based nuclear forces and their applications

Abstract:During the past two decades, chiral effective field theory has evolved into a powerful tool to derive nuclear forces from first principles. Nearly all two-nucleon interactions have been worked out up to sixth order of chiral perturbation theory, while, with few exceptions, three-nucleon forces, which play a subtle, but crucial role in microscopic nuclear structure calculations, have been derived up to fifth order. We review the current status of these forces as well as their applications in nuclear many-body systems. While the ab initio description of light nuclei is generally very successful, we point out and analyze problems encountered with medium-mass nuclei. We also survey the construction of equations of state for symmetric nuclear matter and neutron-rich matter based on chiral forces. A focal point is the symmetry energy and its impact on neutron skins and systems of astrophysical relevance. The physics of neutron-rich systems, from nuclei to compact stars, is essentially determined by the density dependence of the symmetry energy. We review the status of predictions in comparison with latest empirical constraints, with particular attention to those extracted from parity violating electron scattering.

Abstract:We discuss the relevance of the scalar modes appearing in chiral theories with spontaneous symmetry breaking such as the NJL model for nuclear matter studies. We show that it depends on the relative role of chiral symmetry breaking and confinement in the nucleon mass origin. It is only in the case of a mixed origin that nuclear matter can be stable and reach saturation. We describe models of nucleon structure where this balance is achieved. We show how chiral constarints and confinement modify the QCD sum rules for the mass evolution in nuclear matter.

Abstract:During the past two decades, chiral effective field theory has become a popular tool to derive nuclear forces from first principles. Two-nucleon interactions have been worked out up to sixth order of chiral perturbation theory and three-nucleon forces up to fifth order. Applications of some of these forces have been conducted in nuclear few- and many-body systems---with a certain degree of success. But in spite of these achievements, we are still faced with great challenges. Among them is the issue of a proper uncertainty quantification of predictions obtained when applying these forces in {\it ab initio} calculations of nuclear structure and reactions. A related problem is the order by order convergence of the chiral expansion. We start this review with a pedagogical introduction and then present the current status of the field of chiral nuclear forces. This is followed by a discussion of representative examples for the application of chiral two- and three-body forces in the nuclear many-body system including convergence issues.

Abstract:Color confinement and chiral symmetry specify some important territory for the study of hadronic physics. Any hadron can be defined as a color-singlet composite system of qurks and gluons, the fundamental fields of qcd, while the landscape of the hadronic spectrum is dominated by the fact that two quark flavors, u and d, are characterized by masses small compared to the fundamental scale of this theory. Measurements sensitive to the orbital angular momenta of the color constituents of the nucleon display the interplay of chiral dynamics and confinement in a unique manner. This pageant can be explored by an evaluation, within the context of the Georgi-Manohar chiral quark model, of the normalization of the orbital structure functions and the normalization of the Boer-Mulders functions for different quark flavors. The resolution structures in the chiral quark model represent an evaluation of Collins functions for a confined system defined by the quantum numbers of the nucleon in the constituent quark model. The orbital structure functions for antiquarks can also be specified within the basic framework of this approach while the normalization of the gluon orbital structure function requires some additional assumptions.

Abstract:This paper deals with the symmetries of elementary fermions and their derivation from fundamental physical principles such as the Lorentz invariance and from the spinor-helicity formalism employed to three-vectors. The generators of the Lorentz group are discussed, and the physics of the associated chiral spins is used to establish the chiral symmetry SU (2). The helicity of spin is defined which, when being applied to the hadronic isospin, yields the symmetry group SU (4). The Kronecker product of these two basic symmetries defines a unified symmetry of the basic light fermions, namely the chiral doublets of the single lepton and triple quarks of the first family. Breaking this symmetry, according to mechanisms that are used in the electroweak interactions of the Standard Model (SM) of quantum field theory, yields quantum electrodynamics (QED) with symmetry group U (1), weak interactions with symmetry group SU (2), and what we like to name quantum hadrodynamics (QHD, akin to quantum chromodynamics QCD of the SM) with symmetry group SU (3). The gauge bosons associated with QED and QHD remain massless, but the weak bosons and the V bosons, related to the transformation of the quarks into a lepton and vice versa, become massive by the Higgs mechanism. Their masses are defined by the Higgs vacuum and the two coupling constants involved in the unified model. The V -boson mass is predicted to be 35.4 GeV. Furthermore, a possible explanation of hadron confinement is given in terms of the two hadronic charge operators. Moreover, the concept of hypercharge as used in the SM is not needed. Various versions of the extended Dirac equation that include the above symmetry groups are derived.

Abstract:Symmetry and its breaking are basic scientific problems.Chiral symmetries are common in nature,for example,the macroscopic spiral arms of galaxies and the rotation of planets;the microscopic spirals of the mineral crystalline,the organic molecules and the elementary particles.The concept of chirality in atomic nuclei was first proposed in 1997.Since then many efforts have been made to understand chiral symmetry and its spontaneous breaking in atomic nuclei.Up to now,more than 30 candidates of chiral nuclei have been reported in the 80,100,130,and 190 mass regions.The concept of the chirality in atomic nuclei,the prediction,the signal,and the experimental verification of the chiral nuclei are briefly introduced;the recent theoretical and experimental progress are reviewed,in particular the existence of multiple chiral doublets (MxD),i.e.,more than one pair of chiral doublet bands in one single nucleus;the simultaneous spontaneous breaking of chiral and reflection symmetry in the newly observed atomic nuclei is introduced,together with a prospect on the future study on nuclear chiral symmetry.

Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics

Abstract:This presentation starts with a brief review of our current picture of QCD phases, derived from lattice QCD thermodynamics and from models based on the symmetries and symmetry breaking patterns of QCD. Typical approaches widely used in this context are the PNJL and chiral quark-meson models. It is pointed out, however, that the modeling of the phase diagram in terms of quarks as quasiparticles misses important and well known nuclear physics constraints. In the hadronic phase of QCD governed by confinement and spontaneously broken chiral symmetry, in-medium chiral effective field theory is the appropriate framework, with pions and nucleons as active degrees of freedom. Nuclear chiral thermodynamics is outlined and the liquid–gas phase transition is described. The density and temperature dependence of the chiral condensate is deduced. As a consequence of two- and three-body correlations in the nuclear medium, no tendency towards a first-order chiral phase transition is found at least up to twice the baryon density of normal nuclear matter and up to temperatures of about 100 MeV. Isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter and neutron matter are also discussed. An outlook is given on new tightened constraints for the equation-of-state of cold and highly compressed matter as implied by a recently observed two-solar-mass neutron star.

I shall outline the main ideas of these developments and discuss prospects for the future. The focus will be on the basic concepts enciphered in a new jargon consisting of terms like ``infinite number of fermions'', ``domain wall fermions'', ``the overlap'', ``the Ginsparg-Wilson relation''. Abstract:The solution of the axial U(1) problem, the role of the topology of the gauge group in forcing the breaking of axial symmetry in any irreducible representation of the observable algebra and the theta vacua structure are revisited in the temporal gauge with attention to the mathematical consistency of the derivations. Both realizations with strong and weak Gauss law are discussed; the control of the general mechanisms and structures is obtained on the basis of the localization of the (large) gauge transformations and the local generation of the chiral symmetry. The Schwinger model in the temporal gauge exactly reproduces the general results.

Towards consistent nuclear interactions from chiral Lagrangians I: The path-integral approach

Abstract:Low-energy nuclear interactions have been extensively studied in the framework of chiral effective field theory. The corresponding potentials have been worked out using dimensional regularization to evaluate ultraviolet divergent loop integrals. An additional cutoff is then introduced in the nuclear Schrödinger equation to calculate observables. Recently, we have shown that such a mixture of two regularization schemes violates chiral symmetry when applied beyond the two-nucleon system and/or to processes involving external probes. To solve this issue, three- and four-nucleon forces as well as exchange current operators need to be re-derived using symmetry-preserving cutoff regularization. While it is possible to introduce a symmetry-preserving cutoff already in the effective chiral Lagrangian, the appearance of high-order time derivatives of the pion field, caused by the regulator, makes the standard Hamiltonian-based methods not well suited for the calculation of nuclear potentials. Here, we propose a new approach to derive nuclear interactions using the path integral method with no reliance on the canonical quantization. To this aim, the interaction part of the action is brought to an instantaneous form via suitably chosen nonlocal field redefinitions. Loop contributions to the nuclear potentials are then generated through the functional determinant, induced by the field redefinitions. We discuss in detail the application of these ideas to the case of a regularized Yukawa-type model of pion-nucleon interactions. Our new method allows to perform a systematic quantum mechanical reduction within the quantum field theory framework and opens the way for deriving consistently regularized nuclear forces and current operators from the effective chiral Lagrangian.

Tevatron Results on Gauge Boson Couplings

Abstract:Direct measurements of the trilinear gauge boson couplings by the CDF and D0 collaborations at Fermilab are reviewed. Limits on the anomalous couplings were obtained at a 95 % CL from four diboson production processes: W-gamma production with the subsequent W boson decay to e-nu or mu-nu, WW production with both the W boson decaying to e-nu or mu-nu, WW/WZ production with one of the gauge bosons decaying leptonically and the other gauge boson decaying to two jets, and Z-gamma production with the subsequent Z boson decay to e-e, mu-mu, or nu-nu. Limits were also obtained by a combined fit to W-gamma, WW to dileptons and WW/WZ semileptonic data samples.

Abstract:Static chiral symmetries are common in nature, for example, the macroscopic spirals of snail shells, the microscopic handedness of certain molecules, and human hands. The concept of chirality in atomic nuclei was first proposed in 1997, and since then many efforts have been made to understand chiral symmetry and its spontaneous breaking in atomic nuclei. Recent theoretical and experimental progress in the verification of chirality in atomic nuclei will be reviewed, together with a discussion of the problems that await to be solved in the future.

Abstract:Low-energy nuclear structure and reactions can be described in a systematically improvable way using the framework of chiral effective field theory. This requires solving the quantum mechanical many-body problem with regularized nuclear forces and current operators, derived from the most general effective chiral Lagrangian. To maintain the chiral and gauge symmetries, a symmetry preserving cutoff regularization has to be employed when deriving nuclear potentials. Here, we discuss various regularization techniques and show how this task can be accomplished by regularizing the pion field in the effective chiral Lagrangian using the gradient flow method. The actual derivation of the nuclear forces and currents from the regularized effective Lagrangian can be carried out utilizing the novel path-integral approach introduced in our earlier paper.
