Fermions with $SU(1,n)$ Spacetime Symmetry

Abstract:We construct theories of free fermions in $(2n-1)$-dimensions with $SU(1,n)$ spacetime symmetry from the null reduction of fermions on a $2n$-dimensional $\Omega$-deformed Minkowski background for $n=2$ and $n=3$. These play a role in the 5d $SU(1,3)$-invariant theories that are conjectured to offer a full description of certain 6d superconformal field theories. We find the $(2n-1)$-dimensional manifestation of the supersymmetry of a free $2n$-dimensional boson-fermion system, which we use to fix the fermion two-point functions. It is then shown that the full $2n$-dimensional two-point function can be recovered through resummation. Limits of the theories are considered, and it is observed that both Galilean and Carrollian field theories appear in different regimes. We confirm that the correlation functions obey the $SU(1,n)$ Ward identities and the representations of the fermions under this group are discussed.

Abstract:It is a well known result that the number of irreducible representations of SU(N) on a tensor product containing k factors of a vector space V is given by the number of involutions in the symmetric group on k letters. In this paper, we present an alternative proof for this fact using a basis of projection and transition operators of the algebra of invariants of SU(N). This proof easily generalizes to the irreducible representations of SU(N) on mixed tensor product spaces (consisting of factors of V as well as its dual space). This implies that the number of irreducible representation of SU(N) on such a space remains unchanged if one exchanges factors V for its dual and vice versa, as long as the total number of factors remains unchanged.

Abstract:We revisit the subject exploring maps from the space of 4-spinors to 3+1 space-time that commute with the Lorentz transformation. All known mappings have a natural embedding in a higher five dimensional spacetime, and can be succinctly expressed as products of quaternions, or split-quaternions, depending on the signature of the embedding 5D spacetime. It is in this sense that we may view the geometry of 4-spinors as being related to the `square root' of five dimensional spacetime. In particular, a point in 5D spacetime may be identified with a corresponding 4-spinor that is uniquely determined up to a quaternionic - or split-quaternionic - phase.

Abstract:We describe the relation between vectors and spinors in complex spacetime in an unconventional chirally asymmetric manner, using purely right-handed spinors, with Minkowski spacetime getting Wick rotated to a four-dimensional Euclidean spacetime with a distinguished direction. In this right-handed spinor geometry self-dual two-forms can be used to get chiral formulations of the Yang-Mills and general relativity actions. Euclidean spacetime left-handed spinors then transform under an internal $SU(2)$ symmetry, rather than the usual $SU(2)_L$ spacetime symmetry related by analytic continuation to the Lorentz group $SL(2,\mathbf C)$.

Abstract:We develop the geometry of four dimensional N=2 superspace where the entire conformal algebra of SU(2,2|2) is realized linearly in the structure group rather than just the SL(2,C) x U(2)_R subgroup of Lorentz and R-symmetries, extending to N=2 our prior result for N=1 superspace. This formulation explicitly lifts to superspace the existing methods of the N=2 superconformal tensor calculus; at the same time the geometry, when degauged to SL(2,C) x U(2)_R, reproduces the existing formulation of N=2 conformal supergravity constructed by Howe.

Abstract:In our previous article [J. High Energ. Phys. 2023, 15 (2023)], we showed that the strictly massless spin-3/2 field, as well as the strictly and partially massless spin-5/2 fields, on N-dimensional (N ≧ 3) de Sitter spacetime (dS N ) are non-unitary unless N=4. The (non-)unitarity was demonstrated by simply observing that there is a (mis-)match between the representation-theoretic labels that correspond to the Unitary Irreducible Representations (UIR's) of the de Sitter (dS) algebra spin(N,1) and the ones corresponding to the space of eigenmodes of the field theories. In this paper, we provide a technical representation-theoretic explanation for this fact by studying the (non-)existence of positive-definite, dS invariant scalar products for the spin-3/2 and spin-5/2 strictly/ partially massless eigenmodes on dS N (N ≧ 3). Our basic tool is the examination of the action of spin(N,1) generators on the space of eigenmodes, leading to the following findings. For odd N, any dS invariant scalar product is identically zero. For even N > 4, any dS invariant scalar product must be indefinite. This gives rise to positive-norm and negative-norm eigenmodes that mix with each other under spin(N,1) boosts. In the N=4 case, the positive-norm sector decouples from the negative-norm sector and each sector separately forms a UIR of spin(4,1). Our analysis makes extensive use of the analytic continuation of tensor-spinor spherical harmonics on the N-sphere (S N ) to dS N and also introduces representation-theoretic techniques that are absent from the mathematical physics literature on half-odd-integer-spin fields on dS N .

Abstract:The quintet of Dirac $4\times 4$ matrices suggests that the fundamental dimension of the internal (spin) space is $n=5$, instead of the conventional dimension $n=4$. Then extending the usual $4\times 4$ tetrads (vierbein), gravity is described in terms of the 5-bein (fünfbein or five legs). We discuss the properties of the spacetime geometry induced from this 5-leg Dirac spinor theory, where the spin connection contains $10\times 4=40$ elements instead of 24 elements in the tetrad formulation of the general relativity theory.

Abstract:It is shown that nonzero orbital momentum in the vertex of secondary interaction in the triangle graph leads to a more clear picture corresponding to the moving complex singularity compared with the case of constant vertex. The peak in the distribution of the final particles invariant mass becomes narrower and its shift with momentum transfer more distinct. It opens the possibility to observe this picture experimentally.

Abstract:Within the 4-dimensional conformal algebra, the presence of two translation operators implies the existence of 3 distinct metrics of definite Weyl weight constructible from the translational gauge fields. If we demand that each of these metrics give rise to a gauge theory of gravity, we are led to extend the symmetry so that each of these three metrics has a corresponding translation operator. Assigning a vierbein to each of these three translations, a different spacetime metric arises for every choice of inner product of the vierbeins. The covering group of the compact part of the minimal transitive group classifying these inner products is $SU(4)$. An additional $SU(2)$ symmetry classifies the antisymmetric parts of the vierbein product. If the metric is chosen as the gauge field of the translations in the standard way, the SU(4) part of this symmetry is broken to the semidirect product of $SU(3)$ with $U(1)$.

Abstract:The complexified ${\Bbb Z}/2$-graded $C^\infty$-Algebraic Geometry aspect of a superspace(-time) $\widehat{X}$ in Sec.\,1 of D(14.1) (arXiv:1808.05011 [math.DG]) together with the Spin-Statistics Theorem in Quantum Field Theory, which requires fermionic components of a superfield be anticommuting, lead us to the notion of towered superspace(-time) $\widehat{X}^{\widehat{\boxplus}}$ and the built-in purely even physics sector $X^{\mbox{physics}}$ from $\widehat{X}^{\widehat{\boxplus}}$. We use this to reproduce the $d=3+1$, $N=1$ Wess-Zumino model and the $d=3+1$, $N=1$ supersymmetric $U(1)$ gauge theory with matter --- as in, e.g., Chap.\,V and Chap.\,VI \& part of Chap.\,VII of the classical Supersymmetry \& Supergravity textbook by Julius Wess and Jonathan Bagger --- and, hence, recast physicists' two most basic supersymmetric quantum field theories solidly into the realm of (complexified ${\Bbb Z}/2$-graded) $C^\infty$-Algebraic Geometry. Some traditional differential geometers' ways of understanding supersymmetric quantum field theories are incorporated into the notion of a purge-evaluation/index-contracting map ${\cal P}:C^\infty(X^{\mbox{physics}})\rightarrow C^\infty(\widehat{X})$ in the setting. This completes for the current case a $C^\infty$-Algebraic Geometry language we sought for in D(14.1), footnote 2, that can directly link to the study of supersymmetry in particle physics. Once generalized to the nonabelian case in all dimensions and extended $N\ge 2$, this prepares us for a fundamental (as opposed to solitonic) description of super D-branes parallel to Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz fundamental superstrings

Abstract:Using the worldline SU(2|1) superfield approach, we construct N=4 superconformally invariant actions for the d=1 multiplets (1, 4, 3) and (2, 4, 2). The SU(2|1) superfield framework automatically implies the trigonometric realization of the superconformal symmetry and the harmonic oscillator term in the corresponding component actions. We deal with the general N=4 superconformal algebra D(2,1;$\alpha$) and its central-extended $\alpha$=0 and $\alpha$=-1 psu(1,1|2)$\oplus$su(2) descendants. We capitalize on the observation that D(2,1;$\alpha$) at $\alpha\neq$0 can be treated as a closure of its two su(2|1) subalgebras, one of which defines the superisometry of the SU(2|1) superspace, while the other is related to the first one through the reflection of $\mu$, the parameter of contraction to the flat N=4, d=1 superspace. This closure property and its $\alpha$=0 analog suggest a simple criterion for the SU(2|1) invariant actions to be superconformal: they should be even functions of $\mu$. We find that the superconformal actions of the multiplet (2, 4, 2) exist only at $\alpha$=-1, 0 and are reduced to a sum of the free sigma-model type action and the conformal superpotential yielding, respectively, the oscillator potential $\sim \mu^2$ and the standard conformal inverse-square potential in the bosonic sector. The sigma-model action in this case can be constructed only on account of non-zero central charge in the superalgebra su(1,1|2).

Abstract:Recently the $\text{SU}(2)$ spin-network states in loop quantum gravity is generalized to those of the corresponding affine Lie algebra. We show that if one literally starts from the full $\text{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ group, this procedure naturally leads to the Bekenstein-Hawking formula of the entanglement entropy for any macroscopic spacetime region. This suggests that a smooth spacetime geometry could be recovered in such a way, as conjectured by Bianchi and Myers. Some comparison with Xiao-Gang Wen's string-net picture of gauge theory is made.

Abstract:It is well known that the Kerr--NUT--AdS spacetimes possess hidden symmetries encoded in the so-called principal Killing--Yano tensor. In this paper, focusing on the four-dimensional case, we obtain a number of symmetry operators for scalar, vector, and tensor perturbations, that are of degree two (to be defined below) and homogeneous in the principal tensor. In particular, by considering homogeneous operators that are linear, quadratic, and cubic in the principal tensor, we recover a complete set of 4 mutually commuting operators for scalar perturbations, underlying the separability of (massive) scalar wave equation. Proceeding to vector and tensor perturbations of the Kerr--NUT--AdS spacetimes, we find a set of 7 and 8 commuting operators, respectively. It remains to be seen whether such operators can be used to separate the corresponding spin 1 and spin 2 test field equations in these spacetimes.

Abstract:In this paper delivered by Murray Gell-Mann at the Stony Brook Supergravity Workshop in 1979, several paths to unification are discussed, from N=8 supergravity to $SU_5$, $SO_{10}$, and $E_6$. Generalizations of $SO_{10}$ to spinor representations of larger groups are introduced. A natural mechanism for generating tiny neutrino masses is proposed in the context of $SO_{10}$, and finally, focus on $SU_3$ rather than $SU_2$ or $SO_3$ family symmetries is noted.

Abstract:We propose a new method to solve the Killing spinor equations of eleven-dimensional supergravity based on a description of spinors in terms of forms and on the Spin(1,10) gauge symmetry of the supercovariant derivative. We give the canonical form of Killing spinors for N=2 backgrounds provided that one of the spinors represents the orbit of Spin(1,10) with stability subgroup SU(5). We directly solve the Killing spinor equations of N=1 and some N=2, N=3 and N=4 backgrounds. In the N=2 case, we investigate backgrounds with SU(5) and SU(4) invariant Killing spinors and compute the associated spacetime forms. We find that N=2 backgrounds with SU(5) invariant Killing spinors admit a timelike Killing vector and that the space transverse to the orbits of this vector field is a Hermitian manifold with an SU(5)-structure. Furthermore, N=2 backgrounds with SU(4) invariant Killing spinors admit two Killing vectors, one timelike and one spacelike. The space transverse to the orbits of the former is an almost Hermitian manifold with an SU(4)-structure and the latter leaves the almost complex structure invariant. We explore the canonical form of Killing spinors for backgrounds with extended, N>2, supersymmetry. We investigate a class of N=3 and N=4 backgrounds with SU(4) invariant spinors. We find that in both cases the space transverse to a timelike vector field is a Hermitian manifold equipped with an SU(4)-structure and admits two holomorphic Killing vector fields. We also present an application to M-theory Calabi-Yau compactifications with fluxes to one-dimension.

Abstract:The nilpotence variety for extended supersymmetric quantum mechanics is a cone over a quadric in projective space. The pure spinor correspondence, which relates the description of off-shell supermultiplets to the classification of modules over the corresponding hypersurface ring, reduces to a classical problem of linear algebra. Spinor bundles, which correspond to maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules, serve as basic building blocks. Koszul duality appears as a deformed version of the Bernstein-Gel'fand-Gel'fand correspondence that we make fully concrete. We illustrate in numerous examples the close relationship between these connections and the powerful graphical technology of Adinkras, which appear as a decategorification of special complexes on quadrics. We emphasize the role of R-symmetry for recovering higher-dimensional gauge and gravity multiplets.
