Abstract:In this paper we investigate four dimensional Lorentzian spacetimes with constant curvature invariants ($CSI$ spacetimes). We prove that if a four dimensional spacetime is $CSI$, then either the spacetime is locally homogeneous or the spacetime is a Kundt spacetime for which there exists a frame such that the positive boost weight components of all curvature tensors vanish and the boost weight zero components are all constant. We discuss some of the properties of the Kundt-$CSI$ spacetimes and their applications. In particular, we discuss $\mathcal{I}$-symmetric spaces and degenerate Kundt $CSI$ spacetimes.

Abstract:We discuss (arbitrary-dimensional) Lorentzian manifolds and the scalar polynomial curvature invariants constructed from the Riemann tensor and its covariant derivatives. Recently, we have shown that in four dimensions a Lorentzian spacetime metric is either $\mathcal{I}$-non-degenerate, and hence locally characterized by its scalar polynomial curvature invariants, or is a degenerate Kundt spacetime. We present a number of results that generalize these results to higher dimensions and discuss their consequences and potential physical applications.

Abstract:Motivated by supersymmetry methods in general relativity, we study four-dimensional Lorentzian space-times with a complex Dirac spinor field satisfying a Killing-spinor-like equation where the Killing constant is promoted to a complex function. We call the resulting geometry a generalized Siklos space-time. After deriving a number of identities for complex spaces, we specialize to Lorentz signature, where we show that the Killing function must be real and that the corresponding Dirac spinor is Majorana (as long as the space-time is not conformally flat), and we obtain the local form of the metric. We show that the purely gravitational degrees of freedom correspond to waves, whereas the matter sources generically correspond, via Einstein's field equations, to a sum of pure radiation and a space-like perfect fluid. Consequently, we conclude that the physically relevant case is obtained when the Killing function is homogeneous on the wave surfaces.

Abstract:We examine the question of scale versus conformal invariance on maximally symmetric curved backgrounds and study general 2-derivative conformally invariant free theories of vectors and tensors. For spacetime dimension $D>4$, these conformal theories can be diagonalized into standard massive fields in which unbroken conformal symmetry non-trivially mixes components of different spins. In $D=4$, the tensor case becomes a conformal theory mixing a partially massless spin-2 field with a massless spin-1 field. For massless linearized gravity in $D = 4$, we confirm through direct calculation that correlation functions of gauge-invariant operators take the conformally invariant form, despite the absence of standard conformal symmetry at the level of the action.

On the Rigidity of Cosmological Space-times

Abstract:In this paper we analyse a family of geometrically well-behaved cosmological space-times $(V^{n+1},g)$, which are foliated by intrinsically isotropic space-like hypersurfaces $\{M_t\}_{t\in \mathbb{R}}$, which are orthogonal to a family of co-moving observers defined by a global time-like vector field $U$. In particular, this implies such space-times satisfy several of the well-known criteria for isotropic cosmological space-times, although, in the family in question, the simultaneity-spaces $(M_t,g_t)$ associated to $U$ can have as sectional curvature a sign-changing function $k(t)$. Being this clearly impossible in the FLRW family of standard cosmological space-times, it motivates us to revisit the geometric rigidity consequences of different definitions of isotropy available in the literature. In this analysis, we divide such definition according to whether the isometries involved are taken to be (local) space-time (STI space-times) or (local) space isometries (SI space-times) of $(M_t,g_t)$ for each $t$. This subtlety will be shown to be critical, proving that only when space-time isometries are considered one obtains the well-known rigidity properties associated with isotropic cosmological space-times. In particular SI space-times will be shown to be a strictly larger class than the STI ones, allowing a family of basic cosmological curvature change models which are not even locally isometric to any FLRW space-time.

Abstract:Intrinsic Conformal Symmetries have emerged as a tool for developing viable and physically coherent models, particularly in scenarios incorporating a negative cosmological constant. This study demonstrates that when the bulk geometry accommodates a set of $10$ Intrinsic Conformal Symmetries, which operate on three-dimensional hypersurfaces (be they spacelike or timelike), it leads to the existence of two distinct families of five-dimensional spacetimes. These spacetimes represent the general solutions to the bulk field equations. An aspect of these models is the composition of their energy-momentum tensor, which includes two key components: a negative cosmological constant and a parallel pressure $p_{\parallel}$ aligned with the extra spatial dimension. This framework can be perceived as a $5D$ extension of the recently identified Spatially Inhomogeneous and Irrotational spacetimes. Significantly, these models offer a novel perspective for investigating the impacts of spatial inhomogeneity on the cosmological evolution of the Universe, particularly within the context of the Randall-Sundrum theory. This exploration is essential for deepening our understanding of the role of higher dimensions in cosmological models.

Static spacetimes haunted by a phantom scalar field: classification and global structure in the massless case

Abstract:We discuss various novel features of $n(\ge 4)$-dimensional spacetimes sourced by a massless (non-)phantom scalar field in general relativity. Assuming that the metric is a warped product of static two-dimensional Lorentzian spacetime and an $(n-2)$-dimensional Einstein space $K^{n-2}$ with curvature $k=0, \pm 1$, and that the scalar field depends only on the radial variable, we present a complete classification of static solutions for both signs of kinetic term. Contrary to the case with a non-phantom scalar field, the Fisher solution is not unique, and there exist two additional metrics corresponding to the generalizations of the Ellis-Gibbons solution and the Ellis-Bronnikov solution. We explore the maximal extension of these solutions in detail by the analysis of null/spacelike geodesics and singularity. For the phantom Fisher and Ellis-Gibbons solutions, we find that there inevitably appear parallelly propagated (p.p) curvature singularities in the parameter region where there are no scalar curvature singularities. Interestingly, the areal radius blows up at these p.p curvature singularities, which are nevertheless accessible within a finite affine time along the radial null geodesics. It follows that only the Ellis-Bronnikov solution describes a regular wormhole in the two-sided asymptotically flat spacetime. Using the general transformation relating the Einstein and Jordan frames, we also present a complete classification of solutions with the same symmetry coupled to a conformal scalar field. Additionally, by solving the field equations in the Jordan frame, we prove that this classification is genuinely complete.

Abstract:Standard general coordinate invariance for the volume element is extended to general coordinate transformations that have a negative jacobian. This is possible by introducing a non Riemannian Measure of integration, which transforms according to the jacobian of the coordinate transformation, not the absolute value of the jacobian of the coordinate transformation as it is the case with $\sqrt{-g}$. For some signed general transformations a change of boundary conditions is involved in GR and restoring the original limits of integrations can restore symmetry of the action. The discussion totally changes when a non Riemannian Measure of integration is introduced, in the case of signed general coordinate transformations, and even when we have, boundaries, since the modified measure is constructed out of scalar fields becomes also the integration manifold, Since the measure fields that define the non metric measure are scalars. if a signed general coordinate transformations is considered, there is no change in the measure fields, indicating strict invariance of both lagrangian density and integration manifold, implying boundary terms for manifolds with boundaries in coordinate space to be irrelevant . This analysis can be applied to give a framework where to certain interesting scenarios . We consistently formulate the non Riemannian measure theory extension of General Relativity, that could be related to Linde Universe Multiplication model, although there are some fundamental differences. The assumption of a coordinate independent measure of integration appears also useful in the study of Baby Universe Creation. The formulation provides also a new natural way to address the problem of time in Quantum Cosmology, a proposal for a quantum space time and identification of space times and anti space times states in the gravitational theory.

Symmetry and special relativity in Finsler spacetime with constant curvature

Abstract:Within the framework of projective geometry, we investigate kinematics and symmetry in $(\alpha,\beta)$ spacetime-one special types of Finsler spacetime. The projectively flat $(\alpha,\beta)$ spacetime with constant flag curvature is divided into four types. The symmetry in type A-Riemann spacetime with constant sectional curvature is just the one in de Sitter special relativity. The symmetry in type B-locally Minkowski spacetime is just the one in very special relativity. It is found that type C-Funk spacetime and type D-scaled Berwald's metric spacetime both possess the Lorentz group as its isometric group. The geodesic equation, algebra and dispersion relation in the $(\alpha,\beta)$ spacetime are given. The corresponding invariant special relativity in the four types of $(\alpha,\beta)$ spacetime contain two parameters-the speed of light and a geometrical parameter which may relate to the new physical scale. They all reduce to Einstein's special relativity while the geometrical parameter vanishes.

Abstract:For a Lorentzian homogeneous space, we study how algebraic conditions on the isotropy group affect the geometry and curvature of the homogeneous space. More specifically, we prove that a Lorentzian locally homogeneous space is locally isometric to a plane wave if it admits an Ambrose--Singer connection with indecomposable, non-irreducible holonomy. This generalises several existing results that require a certain algebraic type of the torsion of the Ambrose--Singer connection and moreover is in analogy to the fact that a Lorentzian homogeneous space with irreducible isotropy has constant sectional curvature.

Invariant description of static and dynamical Brans-Dicke spherically symmetric models

Abstract:We investigate spherically symmetric static and dynamical Brans-Dicke theory exact solutions using invariants and, in particular, the Newman Penrose formalism utilizing Cartan scalars. The GR limit of these solutions is examined through the use of Cartan invariants via the Cartan-Karlhede algorithm and is additionally supported by analysis of scalar polynomial invariants. It is determined that the appearance of horizons in these spacetimes depends primarily on one of the parameters, $n$, of the family of solutions. In particular, expansion-free surfaces appear which, for a subset of parameter values, define additional surfaces distinct from the standard surfaces (e.g., apparent horizons) identified in previous work. These surfaces in static spherically symmetric Brans-Dicke solutions was previously shown to correspond to the Schwarzschild horizon in general relativity when an appropriate limit exists between the two theories. We show additionally that other geometrically defined horizons exist for these cases, and identify all solutions for which the corresponding general relativity limit is not a Schwarzschild one, yet still contains horizons. The identification of some of these other surfaces was noted in previous work and is characterized invariantly in this work. In the case of the family of dynamical Brans-Dicke solutions, we identify similar invariantly defined surfaces as in the static case and present an invariant characterization of their geometries. Through the analysis of the Cartan invariants, we determine which members of these families of solutions are locally equivalent, through the use of the Cartan-Karlhede algorithm. In addition, we identify black hole surfaces, naked singularities, and wormholes with the Cartan invariants. The aim of this work is to demonstrate the usefulness of Cartan invariants for describing properties of exact solutions.

All non-expanding gravitational waves in $D$-dimensional (anti-)de Sitter space

Abstract:We present a complete, theory-independent classification of $D$-dimensional Kundt spacetimes of Weyl and traceless-Ricci type N. We show that these geometries consist of three invariantly defined subfamilies, namely (generalized) Kundt, pp- and Siklos waves, for each of which we obtain a convenient canonical form. As a byproduct, this also demonstrates that all such metrics belong to the (A)dS-Kerr-Schild class. The role of these spacetimes in Einstein's gravity (including minimally coupled $p$-forms and non-linear electrodynamics) as non-expanding gravitational waves in an (anti)-de Sitter background is discussed. Furthermore, applications to extended theories such as Gauss-Bonnet, Lovelock, quadratic and $f(R)$ gravity are also briefly illustrated, as well as the overlap of the obtained metrics with universal and almost-universal spacetimes. In the appendices we additionally settle the issue of the redundancy of certain field equations for all Kundt spacetimes in a theory-independent way, and present various alternative coordinates for the spacetimes studied in the paper.

Abstract:The necessary and sufficient conditions for a spacetime with an invariant frame to admit a group of isometries of dimension $r$ are given in terms of the connection tensor $H$ associated with this frame. In Petrov-Bel types I, II and III, and in other spacetimes where an invariant frame algebraically defined by the curvature tensor exists, the connection tensor $H$ is given in terms of the Weyl and Ricci tensors without an explicit determination of the frame. Thus, an IDEAL (intrinsic, deductive, explicit and algorithmic) characterization of these spacetimes follows. Some examples show that this algorithm can be easily implemented on the xAct Mathematica suite of packages.

Abstract:We investigate the cosmological applications of scalar-tensor theories that arise effectively from the Lorentz fiber bundle of a Finsler-like geometry. We first show that the involved nonlinear connection induces a new scalar degree of freedom and eventually a scalar-tensor theory. Using both a holonomic and a nonholonomic basis, we show the appearance of an effective dark-energy sector, which additionally acquires an explicit interaction with the matter sector, arising purely from the internal structure of the theory. Applying the theory at late times, we find that we can obtain the thermal history of the Universe, namely the sequence of matter and dark-energy epochs, and moreover the effective dark-energy equation-of-state parameter can be quintessencelike, phantomlike, or experience the phantom-divide crossing during cosmological evolution. Furthermore, applying the scenario at early times, we see that one can acquire an exponential de Sitter solution as well as obtain an inflationary realization with the desired scale-factor evolution. These features arise purely from the intrinsic geometrical structure of Finsler-like geometry and reveal the capabilities of the construction.
Nonsingular solutions to the Einstein equations on piecewise-Lorentzian manifolds

Abstract:We consider 4-dimensional spacetime manifolds that are piecewise Lorentzian, where the Lorentzian components of the manifold are separated by codimension-one planes (spacelike or timelike) on which the metric is degenerate. Such manifolds are of interest because they enlarge the smooth and nonsingular solution space of the Einstein equations. Planes of degeneracy that are perpendicular to each other can exist simultaneously. We describe various solutions of this type to the vacuum equations $G_{\mu\nu}=0$ and $G_{\mu\nu}+\Lambda g_{\mu\nu}=0$, and to $G_{\mu\nu}= 8\pi G T_{\mu\nu}$ for a perfect fluid. Novel examples include static gravitational lumps of finite curvature and a spacetime that responds to a cosmological constant via oscillations in time and/or space. A spacelike degeneracy plane can be used to avoid the big bang singularity, as we have further described elsewhere.

Abstract:The configuration space of general relativity is superspace—the space of all Riemannian 3-metrics modulo diffeomorphisms. However, it has been argued that the configuration space for gravity should be conformal superspace—the space of all Riemannian 3-metrics modulo diffeomorphisms and conformal transformations. Recently a manifestly three-dimensional theory was constructed with conformal superspace as the configuration space. Here a fully four-dimensional action is constructed so as to be invariant under conformal transformations of the 4-metric using general relativity as a guide. This action is then decomposed to a (3 + 1)-dimensional form and from this to its Jacobi form. The surprising thing is that the new theory turns out to be precisely the original three-dimensional theory. The physical data are identified and used to find the physical representation of the theory. In this representation the theory is extremely similar to general relativity. The clarity of the four-dimensional picture should prove very useful for comparing the theory with those aspects of general relativity which are usually treated in the four-dimensional framework.

Abstract:The classical Minkowski formula is extended to spacelike codimension-two submanifolds in spacetimes which admit "hidden symmetry" from conformal Killing-Yano two-forms. As an application, we obtain an Alexandrov type theorem for spacelike codimension-two submanifolds in a static spherically symmetric spacetime: a codimension-two submanifold with constant normalized null expansion (null mean curvature) must lie in a shear-free (umbilical) null hypersurface. These results are generalized for higher order curvature invariants. In particular, the notion of mixed higher order mean curvature is introduced to highlight the special null geometry of the submanifold. Finally, Alexandrov type theorems are established for spacelike submanifolds with constant mixed higher order mean curvature, which are generalizations of hypersurfaces of constant Weingarten curvature in the Euclidean space.

Abstract:We investigate the $1+1+2$ covariant formalism in the presence of nonmetricity. Focusing on static and Locally Rotationally Symmetric spacetimes, we show how nonmetricity affects all the kinematic quantities involved in the covariant $1+1+2$ decomposition. We apply the resulting geometrical framework to study spherically symmetric solutions in the context of $f(\mathcal{Q})$ gravity in vacuum. We obtain explicit solutions and sufficient conditions for the existence of Schwarzschild-de Sitter type solutions.

Abstract:We find the local form of all non-closed Lorentzian Weyl manifolds $(M,c,\nabla)$ with recurrent curvature tensor.If the dimension of the manifold is greater than 3, then the conformal structure is flat, and the recurrent Weyl structure is locally determined by a single function. Two local structures are equivalent if and only if the corresponding functions are related by a transformation from $\mathrm{SAff}_1(\mathbb{R}) \times \mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R}) \times \mathbb{Z}_2$. We find generators for the field of rational scalar differential invariants of this Lie group action. The global structure of the manifold $M$ may be described in terms of a foliation with a transversal projective structure. It is shown that all locally homogeneous structures are locally equivalent, and there is only one simply connected homogeneous non-closed recurrent Lorentzian Weyl manifold. Moreover, there are 5 classes of cohomogeneity-one spaces, and all other spaces are of cohomogeneity-two. If $\dim M=3$, the non-closed recurrent Lorentzian Weyl structures are locally determined by one function of two variables or two functions of one variables, depending on whether its holonomy algebra is 1- or 2-dimensional. In this case, two structures with the same holonomy algebra are locally equivalent if and only if they are related, respectively, by a transformation from an infinite-dimensional Lie pseudogroup or a 4-dimensional subgroup of $\mathrm{Aff}(\mathbb R^3)$. Again we provide generators for the field of rational differential invariants. We find a local expression for the locally homogeneous non-closed recurrent Lorentzian Weyl manifolds of dimension 3, and also of those of cohomogeneity one and two. In the end we give a local description of the non-closed recurrent Lorentzian Weyl manifolds that are also Einstein-Weyl. All of them are 3-dimensional and have a 2-dimensional holonomy algebra.
