Abstract:We find bounds on the Hilbert space compression of the limit of a directed metric system of groups. We also give estimates on the Hilbert space compression of group extensions of a group $H$ by a a word-hyperbolic group or a group of polynomial growth.

Abstract:A multiresolution analysis for a Hilbert space realizes the Hilbert space as the direct limit of an increasing sequence of closed subspaces. In a previous paper, we showed how, conversely, direct limits could be used to construct Hilbert spaces which have multiresolution analyses with desired properties. In this paper, we use direct limits, and in particular the universal property which characterizes them, to construct wavelet bases in a variety of concrete Hilbert spaces of functions. Our results apply to the classical situation involving dilation matrices on $L^2(\R^n)$, the wavelets on fractals studied by Dutkay and Jorgensen, and Hilbert spaces of functions on solenoids.

Compressed decision problems in hyperbolic groups

Abstract:We prove that the compressed word problem and the compressed simultaneous conjugacy problem are solvable in polynomial time in hyperbolic groups. In such problems, group elements are input as words defined by straight line programs defined over a finite generating set for the group. We prove also that, for any infinite hyperbolic group $G$, the compressed knapsack problem in $G$ is ${\mathsf{NP}}$-complete.

Infinite Dimensional Multiplicity Free Spaces I: Limits of Compact Commutative Spaces

Abstract:We study direct limits $(G,K) = \varinjlim (G_n,K_n)$ of compact Gelfand pairs. First, we develop a criterion for a direct limit representation to be a multiplicity--free discrete direct sum of irreducible representations. Then we look at direct limits $G/K = \varinjlim G_n/K_n$ of compact riemannian symmetric spaces, where we combine our criterion with the Cartan--Helgason Theorem to show in general that the regular representation of $G = \varinjlim G_n$ on a certain function space $\varinjlim L^2(G_n/K_n)$ is multiplicity free. That method is not applicable for direct limits of nonsymmetric Gelfand pairs, so we introduce two other methods. The first, based on ``parabolic direct limits'' and ``defining representations'', extends the method used in the symmetric space case. The second uses some (new) branching rules from finite dimensional representation theory. In both cases we define function spaces $\cA(G/K)$, $\cC(G/K)$ and $L^2(G/K)$ to which our multiplicity--free criterion applies.

Abstract:We study the geometry of hyperconvex representations of hyperbolic groups in ${\rm PSL}(d,\mathbb{C})$ and establish two structural results: a group admitting a hyperconvex representation is virtually isomorphic to a Kleinian group, and its hyperconvex limit set in the appropriate flag manifold has Hausdorff dimension strictly smaller than $2$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be the semidirect product $N \rtimes \mathbb{R}$, where $N$ is a stratified Lie group and $\mathbb{R}$ acts on $N$ via automorphic dilations. Homogeneous left-invariant sub-Laplacians on $N$ and $\mathbb{R}$ can be lifted to $G$, and their sum $\Delta$ is a left-invariant sub-Laplacian on $G$. In previous joint work of Ottazzi, Vallarino and the first-named author, a spectral multiplier theorem of Mihlin--Hörmander type was proved for $\Delta$, showing that an operator of the form $F(\Delta)$ is of weak type $(1,1)$ and bounded on $L^p(G)$ for all $p \in (1,\infty)$ provided $F$ satisfies a scale-invariant smoothness condition of order $s > (Q+1)/2$, where $Q$ is the homogeneous dimension of $N$. Here we show that, if $N$ is a group of Heisenberg type, or more generally a direct product of Métivier and abelian groups, then the smoothness condition can be pushed down to the sharp threshold $s>(d+1)/2$, where $d$ is the topological dimension of $N$. The proof is based on lifting to $G$ weighted Plancherel estimates on $N$ and exploits a relation between the functional calculi for $\Delta$ and analogous operators on semidirect extensions of Bessel--Kingman hypergroups.

Abstract:We obtain Szegő-type Limit Theorems in the setting of Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces on discs in $\mathbb{C}$. From this, we derive a formula for the density of the eigenvalues of compressions of Toeplitz operators. Examples for the Bergman and Segal-Bargmann-Fock space are also presented.

Abstract:Given a subspace $U\subset\mathbb{C}[x_1,\dots,x_n]_d$ we consider the closure of the image of the rational map $\mathbb{P}^{n-1}\dashrightarrow\mathbb{P}^{\dim U-1}$ given by $U$. Its coordinate ring is isomorphic to $\bigoplus_{i\ge 0} U^i$ where $U^i$ is the degree $i$ component. We consider the Hilbert function of this algebra in the case where $U$ contains a regular sequence, equivalently the map is a morphism, and find lower bounds for the dimension of the degree 2 component. We apply our bounds to study the boundary structure of certain convex sets, called Gram spectrahedra, which are linked to sum of squares representations of non-negative polynomials.

Limits of limit sets in rank-one symmetric spaces

Abstract:We consider the question of continuity of limit sets for sequences of geometrically finite subgroups of isometry groups of rank-one symmetric spaces, and prove analogues of classical (Kleinian) theorems in this context. In particular we show that, assuming strong convergence of the sequence of subgroups, the limit sets vary continuously with respect to Hausdorff distance, and if the sequence is weakly type-preserving, the sequence of Cannon-Thurston maps also converges uniformly to a limiting Cannon-Thurston map. Our approach uses the theory of extended geometrically finite representations, developed recently by the second author.

Subgroups of word hyperbolic groups in dimension 2 over arbitrary rings

Abstract:In 1996, Gersten proved that finitely presented subgroups of a word hyperbolic group of integral cohomological dimension 2 are hyperbolic. We use isoperimetric inequalities over arbitrary rings to extend this result to any ring. In particular, we study the discrete isoperimetric function and show that its linearity is equivalent to hyperbolicity, which is also equivalent to it being subquadratic. We further use these ideas to obtain conditions for subgroups of higher rank hyperbolic groups to be again higher rank hyperbolic of the same rank. The appendix discusses the equivalence between isoperimetric inequalities and coning inequalities in the simplicial setting and the general setting, leading to combinatorial definitions of higher rank hyperbolicity in the setting of simplicial complexes and allowing us to give elementary definitions of higher rank hyperbolic groups.

Abstract:We establish the $L^p$ boundedness of Hilbert transforms and maximal functions along flat curves in the Heisenberg group. This generalizes the $\mathbb{R}^n$ result by Carbery, Christ, Vance, Wainger, and Watson. What is new about our result compared to the Heisenberg group generalization by Carbery, Wainger, and Wright is that we allow all three components of the curves to vary independently, we keep the original form of the conditions required in the $\mathbb{R}^n$ case, and our method is likely to be generalized to other stratified nilpotent groups.

Abstract:Iwasawa first established a duality relating the direct limit and the inverse limit of class groups in a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension, and this result has recently been extended to multiple $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions by many authors. In this paper, we establish an analogous duality for the direct limit and the inverse limit of higher even $K$-groups in a $\mathbb{Z}_p^d$-extension.

Abstract:Let $A$ be a symmetric linear relation in the Hilbert space $\gH$ with equal deficiency indices $n_\pm (A)\leq\infty$. A self-adjoint linear relation $\wt A\supset A$ in some Hilbert space $\wt\gH\supset \gH$ is called an exit space extension of $A$; such an extension is called finite-codimensional if $\dim (\wt\gH\ominus\gH)< \infty$. We study the compressions $C (\wt A)=P_\gH\wt A\up\gH$ of exit space extensions $\wt A=\wt A^*$. For a certain class of extensions $\wt A$ we parameterize the compressions $C (\wt A)$ by means of abstract boundary conditions. This enables us to characterize various properties of $C (\wt A)$ (in particular, self-adjointness) in terms of the parameter for $\wt A$ in the Krein formula for resolvents. We describe also the compressions of a certain class of finite-codimensional extensions. These results develop the results by A. Dijksma and H. Langer obtained for a densely defined symmetric operator $A$ with finite deficiency indices.

Abstract:We show that if $H$ is a group of polynomial growth whose growth rate is at least quadratic then the $L_p$ compression of the wreath product $\Z\bwr H$ equals $\max{\frac{1}{p},{1/2}}$. We also show that the $L_p$ compression of $\Z\bwr \Z$ equals $\max{\frac{p}{2p-1},\frac23}$ and the $L_p$ compression of $(\Z\bwr\Z)_0$ (the zero section of $\Z\bwr \Z$, equipped with the metric induced from $\Z\bwr \Z$) equals $\max{\frac{p+1}{2p},\frac34}$. The fact that the Hilbert compression exponent of $\Z\bwr\Z$ equals $\frac23$ while the Hilbert compression exponent of $(\Z\bwr\Z)_0$ equals $\frac34$ is used to show that there exists a Lipschitz function $f:(\Z\bwr\Z)_0\to L_2$ which cannot be extended to a Lipschitz function defined on all of $\Z\bwr \Z$.

Limits of sparse hypergraphs

Abstract:We generalize ultraproducts and local-global limits of graphs to hypergraphs and other structures. We show that the local statistics of an ultraproduct of a sequence of hypergraphs are the ultralimits of the local statistics of the hypergraphs. Using some standard results from model theory, we conclude that the space of (equivalence classes of) pmp hypergraphs with the topology of local-global convergence is compact, and that any countable set of local statistics for a pmp hypergraph can be realized as the statistics of a set of labellings (rather than just approximated) in a local-global equivalent hypergraph. We give two applications. First, we characterize those structures where any solution to the corresponding CSP can be turned into a measurable solution. These turn out to be the width-1 structures. We can also use the limit machinery to extract from this theorem a purely finitary characterizations of width-1 structures involving asymptotic solutions. Second, we prove two measurable versions of the Frankl--Rödl matching theorem using measurable nibble and differential equation arguments. The measurable proofs are much softer than the purely finitary results. And, we can recover the finitary theorems using the limit machinery.

Abstract:The computational complexity of the word problem in HNN-extension of groups is studied. HNN-extension is a fundamental construction in combinatorial group theory. It is shown that the word problem for an ascending HNN-extension of a group H is logspace reducible to the so-called compressed word problem for H. The main result of the paper states that the word problem for an HNN-extension of a hyperbolic group H with cyclic associated subgroups can be solved in polynomial time. This result can be easily extended to fundamental groups of graphs of groups with hyperbolic vertex groups and cyclic edge groups.

Abstract:Recently, Gekeler proved that the group of invertible analytic functions modulo constant functions on Drinfeld's upper half space is isomorphic to the dual of an integral generalized Steinberg representation. In this note we show that the group of invertible functions is the dual of a universal extension of that Steinberg representation. As an application, we show that lifting obstructions of rigid analytic theta cocycles of Hilbert modular forms in the sense of Darmon--Vonk can be computed in terms of $\mathcal{L}$-invariants of the associated Galois representation. The same argument applies to theta cocycles for definite unitary groups.

Abstract:We study the geometry of hyperconvex representations of surface groups in ${\rm PSL}(d,\mathbb{C})$ and their deformation spaces: We produce a natural holomorphic extension of the classical Ahlfors--Bers map to a product of Teichmüller spaces of a canonical Riemann surface lamination and prove that the limit set of a hyperconvex representation in the full flag space has Hausdorff dimension 1 if and only if the representation is conjugate in ${\rm PSL}(d,\mathbb{R})$.

A dilation theoretic approach to Banach spaces

Abstract:For a complex Banach space $\mathbb X$, we prove that $\mathbb X$ is a Hilbert space if and only if every strict contraction $T$ on $\mathbb X$ dilates to an isometry if and only if for every strict contraction $T$ on $\mathbb X$ the function $A_T: \mathbb X \rightarrow [0, \infty]$ defined by $A_T(x)=(\|x\|^2 -\|Tx\|^2)^{\frac{1}{2}}$ gives a norm on $\mathbb X$. We also find several other necessary and sufficient conditions in this thread such that a Banach sapce becomes a Hilbert space. We construct examples of strict contractions on non-Hilbert Banach spaces that do not dilate to isometries. Then we characterize all strict contractions on a non-Hilbert Banach space that dilate to isometries and find explicit isometric dilation for them. We prove several other results including characterizations of complemented subspaces in a Banach space, extension of a Wold isometry to a Banach space unitary and describing norm attainment sets of Banach space operators in terms of dilations.
