Abstract:Coherent or semiclassical states in canonical quantum gravity describe the classical Schwarzschild space-time. By tracing over the coherent state wavefunction inside the horizon, a density matrix is derived. Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is obtained from the density matrix, modulo the Immirzi parameter. The expectation value of the area and curvature operator is evaluated in these states. The behaviour near the singularity of the curvature operator shows that the singularity is resolved. We then generalise the results to space-times with spherically symmetric apparent horizons.

Across-Horizon Propagation and Infinite Time-Dilation: An Independent Approach to Hawking Radiation

Abstract:The conformal scalar propagator as an explicit function of the Schwarzschild black-hole space-time has been established in the preceding three projects. The present project examines the precise relation which that propagator has to the amplitude the Schwarzschild black hole emit a scalar particle in a particular mode of positive energy. It is thereby established that the effect of infinite time-dilation on the event horizon results in both, the thermal radiation in the background of a static exterior space-time geometry and the detraction from thermality if energy-conservation is properly imposed as a constraint on scalar propagation. The derivation of the latter signifies an equivalent approach to the result of Parikh and Wilczek from the semi-classical perspective of the distant observer. From that perspective for that matter, Hawking radiation emerges in both contexts as the exclusive consequence of infinite time-dilation on the event horizon. These results are consistent with Hawking radiation as the exclusive consequence of the causal structure of the Schwarzschild black-hole space-time both, in a static exterior geometry and in such dynamical exterior geometry as energy-conservation signifies. The extension of the thermal case to other spin-fields and black-hole geometries is discussed.

Schrödinger evolution of two-dimensional black holes

Abstract:This paper systematically treats the evolving quantum state for two-dimensional black holes, with particular focus on the CGHS model, but also elucidating features generalizing to higher dimensions. This is done in Schrödinger picture(s), to exhibit the dynamic evolution of the state at intermediate times. After a review of classical solutions, also connecting to descriptions of higher-dimensional black holes, it overviews the canonical quantum treatment of the full evolution, including gravitational dynamics. Derived in an approximation to this, following conversion to "perturbation picture," is the evolution of the quantum matter on the background geometry. Features of the evolving matter state are described, based on choice of a time slicing to put the evolution into ADM form. The choices of slicing as well as coordinates on the slices result in different quantum "pictures" for treating the evolution. If such a description is based on smooth trans-horizon slices, that avoids explicit reference to ultra-planckian modes familiar from traditional treatments, and exhibits the Hawking excitations as emerging from a "quantum atmosphere" with thickness comparable to the inverse temperature. Detailed study of the state exhibits the entanglement structure between Hawking quanta and the partner excitations inside the black hole, and the corresponding "missing information." This explicit description also allows direct study of the evolution and features, e.g. as seen by infalling observers, of these partner excitations, helping to address various puzzles with them. Explicit treatment of the evolving state, and its extension to higher dimensions, provides further connections to information theory and a starting point for study of corrections that can unitarize evolution, arising from new quantum gravity effects -- whether wormholes or something entirely different.

The Holographic Map of an Evaporating Black Hole

Abstract:We construct a holographic map that takes the semi-classical state of an evaporating black hole and its Hawking radiation to a microscopic model that reflects the scrambling dynamics of the black hole. The microscopic model is given by a nested sequence of random unitaries, each one implementing a scrambling time step of the black hole evolution. Differently from other models, energy conservation and the thermal nature of the Hawking radiation are taken into account. We show that the QES formula follows for the entropy of multiple subsets of the radiation and black hole. We further show that a version of entanglement wedge reconstruction can be proved by computing suitable trace norms and quantum fidelities involving the action of a unitary on a subset of Hawking partners. If the Hawking partner is in an island, its unitary can be reconstructed by a unitary on the radiation. We also adopt a similar setup and analyse reconstruction of unitaries acting on an infalling system.

Abstract:We investigate the simple model of Pennington, Shenker, Stanford and Yang for modeling the density matrix of Hawking radiation, but further include dynamics for EOW branes behind the horizon. This allows interactions that scatter one interior state to another, and also allows EOW loops. At strong coupling, we find that EOW states are no longer random; the ensemble has collapsed, and coupling constants encode the microscopic matrix elements of Hawking radiation. This suggests strong interior dynamics are important for understanding evaporating black holes, without any ensemble average. In this concrete model the density matrix of the radiation deviates from the thermal state, small off-diagonal fluctuations encode equivalences between naively orthogonal states, and bound the entropy from above. For almost evaporated black holes the off-diagonal terms become as large as the diagonal ones, eventually giving a pure state. We also find the unique analytic formula for all Renyi entropies.

Hawking Radiation in Lorentz Violating Gravity: A Tale of Two Horizons

Abstract:Since their proposal, Lorentz violating theories of gravity have posed a potential threat to black hole thermodynamics, as superluminal signals appeared to be incompatible with the very black hole notion. Remarkably, it was soon realized that in such theories causally disconnected regions of space-time can still exist thanks to the presence of universal horizons: causal barriers for signals of arbitrary high speed. Several investigations, sometimes with contrasting results, have been performed so to determine if these horizons can be associated with healthy thermodynamic properties similar to those associated with Killing horizons in General Relativity. In this work we offer what we deem to be the final picture emerging from this and previous studies. In summary we show that: 1) there is a thermal, and most of all species-independent, emission associated to universal horizons, determined by their surface gravity; 2) due to the modified dispersion relation of the matter fields, the low energy part of the emitted spectrum is affected by the presence of the Killing horizon, in a way similar to an effective refractive index, leading at low energies (w.r.t. the Lorentz breaking scale) to an emission that mimics a standard Hawking spectrum (i.e. one determined by the Killing horizon surface gravity); 3) the whole picture is compatible with a globally well defined vacuum state i.e. an Unruh state associated with preferred observers, which however at very low energies it is basically indistinguishable from the standard Unruh vacuum associated to metric free-falling observers. One can then conclude that Hawking radiation is remarkably resilient even within the context of gravitational theories entailing the breakdown of local Lorentz invariance.

Evaporation of dynamical horizon with the Hawking temparature in the {\bf K-}essence emergent Vaidya spacetime

Abstract:In the {\bf K-}essence Vaidya Schwarzschild spacetime, we apply the dynamical horizon equation to measure the mass-loss due to Hawking radiation and the tunneling formalism (Hamilton-Jacobi method) to calculate the hawking temperature. Assuming the Dirac-Born-Infeld kind of non-standard action for the {\bf K-}essence here, the background physical spacetime is a static spherically symmetric black hole, and we constrain the {\bf K-}essence scalar field to be a function only of either forward or backward time. The {\bf K-}essence emergent gravity and the generalizations of Vaidya spacetime have been linked by Manna et al. In this paper, we use Sawayama's modified description of the dynamical horizon to show that the obtained findings deviate from the standard Vaidya spacetime geometry.

Abstract:In 1974, Stephen Hawking predicted that quantum effects in the proximity of a black hole lead to the emission of particles and black hole evaporation. At the very heart of this process lies a logarithmic phase singularity which leads to the Bose-Einstein statistics of Hawking radiation. An identical singularity appears in the elementary quantum system of the inverted harmonic oscillator. In this Letter we report the observation of the onset of this logarithmic phase singularity emerging at a horizon in phase space and giving rise to a Fermi-Dirac distribution. For this purpose, we utilize surface gravity water waves and freely propagate an appropriately tailored energy wave function of the inverted harmonic oscillator to reveal the phase space horizon and the intrinsic singularities. Due to the presence of an amplitude singularity in this system, the analogous quantities display a Fermi-Dirac rather than a Bose-Einstein distribution.

Quantum Features of the Cosmological Horizon

Abstract:This thesis explores the thermodynamics of the cosmological horizon, aiming to make progress towards a better understanding of the microscopic nature of its entropy. We utilise the constrained nature of low-dimensional gravity to do so and investigate timelike boundaries in these theories, with an emphasis on the stretched horizon holographic picture. Given the success of AdS/CFT, one might try to embed de Sitter inside anti-de Sitter and describe the expanding region from the boundary. In two dimensions, such geometries exist and, by studying them in the presence of a timelike boundary, we find thermally stable solutions. We thus propose a dual matrix model that should describe this geometry, including the expanding region. One way to test this duality would be to compare bulk and boundary correlators. However, for de Sitter this poses a puzzle: in the saddle point approximation two-point functions are given by a sum over geodesics. Such correlation functions exist for any two arbitrary points in de Sitter, but geodesics do not. This is resolved by including complex saddles that appear upon Wick rotating from the sphere. Additionally, one can use the relationship between three-dimensional gravity and Chern-Simons theory to explore thermodynamic contributions to the de Sitter horizon. The Euclidean gravitational path integral provides the exact, all-loop quantum corrected de Sitter entropy. To understand the microscopic origin of this entropy, one hopes to find an analogous Lorentzian calculation that produces this result. This takes the form of an edge-mode theory living close to the cosmological horizon with a complexified gauge group, leading to an unbounded spectrum. To make progress, we study a comparable Abelian theory that leads to an entropy with an entanglement character. Finally, we summarise some new results on edge-mode theories arising from general boundary conditions.

Abstract:We present a generalization of the Hawking effect for dynamical trapping horizons by calculating the tunneling rate in the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism. It turns out that all horizons classified by Hayward are subjected to thermal quantum effects. While the Hawking effect for future outer and past inner trapping horizons is given as a particle emission, we show that the Hawking effect for future inner and past outer trapping horizons translates to an absorption. The universality of the treatment allows a natural transfer to the static case.

Abstract:We study the quantum field theory (QFT) of a scalar field in the Schrödinger picture in the functional formulation. We derive a formula for the evolution kernel in a flat expanding metric. We discuss a transition between Riemannian and pseudoRiemannian metrics (signature inversion). We express the real time Schrödinger evolution by the Brownian motion . We discuss the Feynman integral for a scalar field in a radiation background. We show that the unitary Schrödinger evolution for positive time can go over for negative time into a dissipative evolution described by diffusive paths.

Abstract:A black hole evaporates by Hawking radiation. Each mode of that radiation is thermal. If the total state is nevertheless to be pure, modes must be entangled. Estimating the minimum size of this entanglement has been an important outstanding issue. We develop a new theory of constrained random symplectic transformations, based on that the total state is pure and Gaussian with given marginals. In the random constrained symplectic model we then compute the distribution of mode-mode correlations, from which we bound mode-mode entanglement. Modes of frequency much larger than $\frac{k_B T_{H}(t)}{\hbar}$ are not populated at time $t$ and drop out of the analysis.Among the other modes we find that correlations and hence entanglement between relatively thinly populated modes (early-time high-frequency modes and/or late modes of any frequency) to be strongly suppressed. Relatively highly populated modes (early-time low-frequency modes) can on the other hand be strongly correlated, but a detailed analysis reveals that they are nevertheless very unlikely to be entangled. Our analysis hence establishes that restoring unitarity after a complete evaporation of a black hole does not require any significant quantum entanglement between any pair of Hawking modes. Our analysis further gives exact general expressions for the distribution of mode-mode correlations in random, pure, Gaussian states with given marginals, which may have applications beyond black hole physics.

Replica Wormholes and Quantum Hair

Abstract:We discuss recent applications of Euclidean path integrals to the black hole information problem. In calculations with replica wormholes as the next-to-leading order correction to the Gibbons-Hawking saddlepoint, the radiation density matrix approaches a pure state at late times, following the Page curve. We compare unitary evaporation of black holes (in real time), mediated by calculable quantum hair effects, with the replica wormhole results. Both replica wormhole and quantum hair approaches imply that radiation states are macroscopic superpositions of spacetime backgrounds, invalidating firewall and monogamy of entanglement constructions. Importantly, identification of modes inside the horizon with radiation modes (i.e., large scale nonlocality across the horizon) is not required to provide a physical picture of unitary evaporation. Radiation modes can encode the interior information while still remaining independent degrees of freedom.

Abstract:The Hawking effect of Dirac particles in a variable-mass Kerr space-time is investigated by using a method called as the generalized tortoise coordinate transformation. The location and the temperature of the event horizon of the non-stationary Kerr black hole are derived. It is shown that the temperature and the shape of the event horizon depend not only on the time but also on the angle. However, the Fermi–Dirac spectrum displays a residual term which is absent from that of Bose–Einstein distribution.

Abstract:Observing quantum particle creation by black holes (Hawking radiation) in the astrophysical context is, in ordinary situations, hopeless. Nevertheless the Hawking effect, which depends only on kinematical properties of wave propagation in the presence of horizons, is present also in nongravitational contexts, for instance in stationary fluids undergoing supersonic flow. We present results on how to observe the analog Hawking radiation in Bose-Einstein condensates by a direct measurement of the density correlations due to the phonon pairs (Hawking quanta-partner) created by the acoustic horizon.

Abstract:Deviations from Hawking's thermal black hole spectrum, observable for macroscopic black holes, are derived from a model of a quantum horizon in loop quantum gravity. These arise from additional area eigenstates present in quantum surfaces excluded by the classical isolated horizon boundary conditions. The complete spectrum of area unexpectedly exhibits evenly spaced symmetry. This leads to an enhancement of some spectral lines on top of the thermal spectrum. This can imprint characteristic features into the spectra of black hole systems. It most notably gives the signature of quantum gravity observability in radiation from primordial black holes, and makes it possible to test loop quantum gravity with black holes well above Planck scale.

Abstract:Hawking's seminal work on black hole radiation highlights a critical issue in our understanding of quantum field theory in curved spacetime (QFTCS), specifically the problem of unitarity loss (where pure states evolve into mixed states). In this paper, we examine a recent proposal for a direct-sum QFTCS, which maintains unitarity through a novel quantization method that employs superselection rules based on discrete spacetime transformations. This approach describes a quantum state as components that evolve within superselection sectors of the complete Hilbert space, adhering to the discrete symmetries of a Schwarzschild black hole. Consequently, it represents a maximally entangled pure state as a direct-sum of two components in the interior and exterior regions of the black hole, thereby preserving the unitarity of Hawking radiation by keeping it in the form of pure states.

Entanglement of Vacuum States With the de Sitter Horizon: Consequences on Holographic Dark Energy

Abstract:The aim of this article is to study the effect of an Event Horizon on the entanglement of the Quantum Vacuum and how entanglement, together with the Holographic Principle, may explain the current value of the Cosmological Constant, in light of recent theories. Entanglement is tested for vacuum states very near and very far from the Horizon of a de Sitter Universe, using the Peres-Horodecki (PPT) criterion. A scalar vacuum field ($\hat{\phi}$) is averaged inside two boxes of volume $V$ in different spatial positions such that it acquires the structure of a bipartite Quantum Harmonic Oscillator, for which the PPT criterion is a necessary but not sufficient condition of separability. Entanglement is found between states obtained from boxes shaped as spherical shells with thickness of the order of one Planck distance ($l_p$), when one of the states is near the Horizon, and the other state is anywhere in the Universe. Entanglement disappears when the distance of the state near the horizon and the Horizon increases to around $5l_p$. If we consider the Horizon not as a surface but as a spherical shell of thickness $l_p$, then this means that there is entanglement between the states in the Horizon and the rest of the Universe. When both states are at distances larger than $\sim 5 l_p$ from the Horizon, no entanglement is found.
