Abstract:Liquid foam is a typical non-equilibrium complex system with hierarchy and serf-organization struc- ture.The process by which liquid from both films and Plateau borders drains out of a freshly made foam as a result of the gravitational force and the capillary force is called foam drainage,which plays a vital role in foam stability.From the view of foam physics,this paper firstly gives a brief introduction to the regular foam struc- ture,and then explains three main mechanisms for foams to evolve into equilibrium state,drainage,gas diffusion and film rupture.The differences and similarities between foam-like materials and porous media are discussed. Recent progress in studies on foam drainage is reviewed,including of the treatment of boundary condition of Plateau border and the corresponding flow regimes,drainage models and applications in one dimensional foams, and the results in 2D foam drainage.We also discuss techniques used in foams drainage experiments and the recent important progress in the experimental and theoretical studies on foam drainage in space.

Abstract:Liquid foams are concentrated dispersions of gas bubbles in a small amount of surfactant solution, which are perpetually out of equilibrium systems. The process of liquid draining through networks of Plateau borders in a fresh foam is so-called foam drainage, as a result of both gravitational and capillary forces, which has great effect on the stability of foams. From the view of foam physics and dynamics, this paper briefly introduces foam structure and major lifetime limiting factors of foam. The substantial progress on the theory of drainage, measuring techniques for liquid fractions, drainage in both one dimension and two dimensions, and drainage in microgravity circumstances are overviewed throughout. Remaining tasks are discussed and a multiscale methodology for foam drainage is proposed for future investigations.
Role of Surface Diffusion for the Drainage and Hydrodynamic Stability of Thin Liquid Films

Abstract:The dynamics of thin liquid films is analyzed taking into account the dependence of the surface diffusion coefficient of the adsorbed surfactant molecules on the density of the adsorption layer. The analysis shows that the Gibbs elasticity disappears from the final equations describing the drainage and hydrodynamic stability of thin liquid films. Thus from a theoretical viewpoint, no correlation between the Gibbs elasticity and the dynamic properties of the thin foam and emulsion films is expected. This conclusion is valid also for a variety of other dynamic processes (in a quasi-stationary regime) where the concentration Marangoni effect is important, such as the motion of drops and bubbles in a liquid medium, and rheology of foams and emulsions. The theory predicts that the main factors governing these processes are (i) the density of the adsorption layer and (ii) the surface friction coefficient of the adsorbed molecules.

Effect of particles on foam drainage

Abstract:Despite many applications, the three phase foam is so complicated and far from being fully understood. Drainage is critical to foam decay, so the effect of particles on foam drainage has been investigated in this research to better understand the complex three phase foam. The power law relationship, drainage regime, foam permeability and the residual solid particles were investigated with different particle concentration, particle hydrophobicity and particle size. It was found that the power law index increased with the increasing of particle concentration and particle hydrophobicity, which indicates the transition of drainage regime from node dominated to Plateau border dominated. It was also found that the medium size particles could increase the Plateau border viscous loss more obviously. Foam permeability with different particles was also discussed via fitting the viscous loss of both Plateau border and nodes. Finally, residual solid particle was used to study the particle behaviour during the free drainage after forced drainage. This research could help us better understand the drainage of three phase foam.

Self-similar and Universal Dynamics in Drainage of Mobile Soap Films

Abstract:Vertical soap films drain under the influence of gravity, as indicated by the downward motion of colorful horizontal interference fringes observed on their surfaces. In this study conducted with rectangular soap films, we experimentally characterize the descent dynamics of these isothickness fringes and report its self-similar nature. We also show that this result is equivalent to thickness profiles exhibiting a separation of space and time. By integrating new measurements with data from the literature across various conditions, we validate these properties and establish the universality of the dynamics, governed by a single physical scalar. Our findings provide new insights for proposing a drainage model and understanding the mechanism of marginal regeneration at the origin of the process.

A fractal classification of the drainage dynamics in thin liquid films

Abstract:It is demonstrated that the dynamic structure is very important for the rate of drainage of a thin liquid film and it can be effectively taken into account by a dynamic fractal dimension. It is shown that the latter is a powerful tool for description of the film drainage and classifies all the known results from the literature. The obtained general expression for the thinning rate is a heuristic one and predicts variety of drainage models, which are even difficult to simulate in practice. It is a typical example of a scaling law, which explains the origin of the complicate dependence of the thinning rate on the film radius.

Experimental Study and Analysis of Energy Evolution of Liquid Foam Drainage in One Dimension

Abstract:Liquid foam is a dense packing of gas bubbles in a small amount of surfactant liquid, which has well-organized structure and behaves as typical soft condensed matter. Forced drainage is the flow of constantly input liquid through the network of interstitial channels between bubbles in foams under actions of gravity and capillarity, which is one of major mechanisms causing liquid foam evolution. Firstly in this paper, we improved the newly proposed method introduced by Hutzler et al. (2005) by considering the light transmission ratio to eliminate the incident light intensity discrepancy along the one dimensional foam formed within a slender Hele-Shaw silicon rectangular tube. After the film rupture and the bubble coarsening were carefully slowed down, forced foam drainages in one dimension were studied by using the improved light scattering technique. We found that the characteristic quantities, such as the drainage wave front velocity and liquid fraction evolution, are consistent with traditional foam drainage results based on Poiseuille-type flow assumption in Plateau borders. And the light transmission ratio is found not to be the reciprocal of the liquid fraction as similar with the transmission probability in diffuse-transmission spectroscopy technique, but prevails the relationship T=0.293+1.038e-29.39(0.01<0.13). We then deduced the viscous energy of foams based on Kelvin cell structure during forced drainage process and calculated the surface energy of foam using the software of Surface Evolver. The evolution of the two kinds of energy at local area of foam was predicted based on the quasi-static assumption of Kelvin cell structure evolution along with liquid fraction variation. The study of foam drainage from a view of energy will be useful in the further study on foam drainage and foam stability control in various applications.
Experimental and Numerical Investigation on Gravity-Driven Film Flow over Triangular Corrugations

Abstract:Liquid film flow over triangular corrugations is investigated by simulations and experiments. The volume of fluid (VOF) method is used to track the free surface between the liquid and gas in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. In the experiments, a sCMOS camera is applied to capture the film flow in a channel. The comparison of the results from three-dimensional (3-D) simulations and experiments shows good agreement. To validate the simulations quantitatively, two-dimensional (2-D) simulations are carried out and the velocity profiles in the liquid film flow field are compared with experimental results. With the validated model, a series of numerical investigations of liquid film flow over triangular corrugations are accomplished. Resonance between the free surface and the corrugations is found when the Reynolds number (Re) of the liquid flow reaches a certain value. When resonance occurs, the amplitude of the waves on the free surface gets the maximum but eddies in the troughs of the corrugations are suppressed. The steepness effect of the corrugations is also investigated. No relationship between the steepness and the resonance could be observed, but steeper corrugations can cause undulations with higher amplitude on the free surface in the low Re range. To investigate the surface tension effect, the inverse of Bond number is introduced. It is found that the inverse Bond number (Bo(-1)) has a direct relation to the resonance phenomenon. Film flow with a lower Bo(-1) value encounters the resonance at a lower Re value. Since the velocity component normal to the corrugated plate plays a significant role during the convection of mass transfer in film flow, the normal flow intensity is investigated. A local maximum of the normal flow intensity is found at the resonance point.

Abstract:Film drainage, essential in droplet and bubble coalescence and surface wetting, is influenced strongly by the stress boundary condition, in particular, when interfacial stresses are present. These stresses, caused by ubiquitous surface-active components, significantly impact the dynamics of liquid films. Through dynamic thin film balance experiments, we compare the effects of Marangoni stresses, interfacial viscosity, and interfacial viscoelasticity on the drainage of free-standing thin liquid films. These data serve to demonstrate that film deformation intricately depends on the interplay between these stresses and capillarity, resulting in widely varied drainage times. Seemingly subtle changes, especially in the local stress-carrying capacity of the interface, can lead to significant differences in film dynamics. This makes it a promising area for research into interfacial-rheologically active materials for stabilizing potentially more sustainable multiphase materials.

Abstract:We derive a boundary layer equation describing accumulation regions within a thin-film approximation framework where gravity and surface tension balance. As part of the analysis of this problem we investigate in detail and rigorously the 'drainage' equation (phi"'+1)phi^3=1. In particular, we prove that all solutions that do not tend to 1 as the independent variable goes to infinity are oscillatory, and that they oscillate in a very specific way. This result and the method of proof will be used in the analysis of solutions of the afore mentioned boundary layer problem.

Shear induced drainage in foamy yield-stress fluids

Abstract:Shear induced drainage of a foamy yield stress fluid is investigated using MRI techniques. Whereas the yield stress of the interstitial fluid stabilizes the system at rest, a fast drainage is observed when a horizontal shear is imposed. It is shown that the sheared interstitial material behaves as a viscous fluid in the direction of gravity, the effective viscosity of which is controlled by shear in transient foam films between bubbles. Results provided for several bubble sizes are not captured by the R^2 scaling classically observed for liquid flow in particulate systems, such as foams and thus constitute a remarkable demonstration of the strong coupling of drainage flow and shear induced interstitial flow. Furthermore, foam films are found to be responsible for the unexpected arrest of drainage, thus trapping irreversibly a significant amount of interstitial liquid.

Abstract:Forced foam drainage is the flow of constantly input liquid through the network of interstitial channels between bubbles in foam under actions of gravity and capillarity. When two streams of liquid are input with twin narrow nozzles separated with a distance, they usually merge into a singular drainage wave to propagate in foams. This work reports results of behaviours of the merged drainage wave. We find that (1) along the vertical direction beneath one nozzle, the liquid spreading is well described by power law with exponents greater than that of individual drainage. (2) Along the vertical direction down the center of the two nozzles, we find the spreading speed is nearly constant for a fixed separation. As the separation distance increases six times, the speed increases only about 14%. This result would benefit designing of micro-mixers and niicro-reactors, based on foam-like channels, for liquid/liquid systems widely used in pharmaceutical industry. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Foamed emulsions are ubiquitous in our daily life but the ageing of such systems is still poorly understood. In this study we investigate foam drainage and measure the evolution of the gas, liquid and oil volume fractions inside the foam. We evidence three regimes of ageing. During an initial period of fast drainage, both bubbles and drops are very mobile. As the foam stabilises drainage proceeds leading to a gradual decrease of the liquid fraction and slowing down of drainage. Clusters of oil drops are less sheared, their dynamic viscosity increases and drainage slows down even further, until the drops become blocked. At this point the oil fraction starts to increase in the continuous phase. The foam ageing leads to an increase of the capillary pressure until the oil acts as an antifoaming agent and the foam collapses.

Abstract:Surfactant-laden thin liquid films overlaid on solid substrates are encountered in a variety of industrial and biological settings. As these films reach submicron thickness, they tend to become unstable owing to the influence of long-range dispersion forces. In the current study, we investigate how gravitational drainage affects the stability attributes of such thin liquid films. Using scaling arguments, we demonstrate that gravity and dispersion forces can exert their influence simultaneously over a wide range of film thicknesses. In the lubrication limit, we carry out linear stability analysis and nonlinear simulations to understand the evolution of draining thin films. Linear stability indicates the existence of two unstable modes and two cutoff wave numbers, as opposed to a single unstable mode and a unique cutoff wave number observed in stationary films. It is also found that surfactant-laden flowing films are more stable than stationary films with surfactants as well as draining films with clean interfaces. The origin of stabilization is identified as the enhanced surfactant perturbations generated due to drainage. We demonstrate that films exhibiting intermediate levels of surfactant activity and significant drainage exhibit the lowest rates of disturbance growth, leading to extending the time of rupture. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevFluids.9.074004 ©2024 American Physical Society

Boundary Curvature Effect on Thin-film Drainage and Slip Length Measurements

Abstract:The thin-liquid film drainage between two curved surfaces is a fundamental process for many hydrodynamic measurements, for which Vinogradova's formula has played a central role when flow slip occurs at fluid-solid interfaces. By performing a rigorous order-of-magnitude analysis, we reveal the importance of the curvature contribution to boundary flow, neglected sofar. Vinogradova's result is found to considerably underestimate the slip-induced reduction of the hydrodynamic drainage force. Our theory can play a crucial role in distinguishing finite-slip from no-slip and quantifying the degree of flow slip at fluid-solid surfaces, which is a fundamental but controversial issue in fluid dynamics. Moreover, qualitatively different from previous theories, our theory predicts a finite hydrodynamic repulsive force for two hydrophobic particles in touch, thus allowing particle collision to occur in a finite time without any additional attractive surface forces. This finding has deep and immediate implications on particle coagulation, adsorption and sedimentation processes relevant for numerous industrial technologies as well as natural phenomena on the earth.

Fluid drainage in erodible porous media

Abstract:Drainage, in which a nonwetting fluid displaces a wetting fluid from a porous medium, is well-studied for media with unchanging solid surfaces. However, many media can be eroded by drainage, with eroded material redeposited in pores downstream, altering further flow. Here, we use theory and simulation to examine how these coupled processes both alter the overall fluid displacement pathway and help reshape the solid medium. We find two new drainage behaviors with markedly different characteristics, and quantitatively delineate the conditions under which they arise. Our results thereby help expand current understanding of these rich physics, with implications for applications of drainage in industry and the environment.

Liquid drains out of foams until equilibrium is reached due to the compromise between gravity and capillarity, which greatly affects the stability of foam. Based on a series of work on foam structure and drainage we conducted previously, this paper reports the results on coalescence of an original forced drainage wave at a low flow rate with subsequent drainage waves with higher flow rates. The evolutions of viscous energy and surface energy during the process of coalescence are theoretically analyzed.
Transition from viscous fingers to foam during drainage in heterogeneous porous media

Abstract:We investigate the behavior of drainage displacements in heterogeneous porous media finding a transition from viscous fingering to foam-like region. A pore network model incorporating the formation of blobs is adopted to study this phenomenon. By imposing a pressure difference between the inlet and outlet, we observe that the displacement pattern undergoes a significant transition from a continuous front of growing viscous fingers to the emergence of foam, which develops and propagates until breakthrough. This transition occurs at a specific distance from the inlet, which we measure and analyze as a function of the viscosity ratio and the capillary number, demonstrating that it follows a non-trivial power-law decay with both the parameters. Moreover, we discuss the relationship between the evolution of the total flow rate and the local pressure drop, showing that the foam developed reduces global mobility. We observe that foam is formed from the fragmentation of viscous fingers beneath the front, and this instability mechanism is connected with fluctuations of the local flow rate, which we analyze both in the viscous fingering region and in the foam region.

Abstract:The present study focuses on the drainage property of aqueous film-forming foam stabilized by different types and concentrations of foam stabilizers. Aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) formulation concentrates are prepared based on the main components of fluorocarbon surfactant, hydrocarbon surfactant, and organic solvents. Carboxymethylcellulose sodium (CS), xanthan gum (XG), and lauryl alcohol (LA) are selected as foam stabilizers of the AFFF. Surface tension, viscosity, and foamability tests of the AFFF solutions are conducted to evaluate the effect of foam stabilizers on the properties of AFFF solutions. Particularly, an apparatus is established based on the law of connected vessel in order to obtain the instantaneous mass of liquids drained from foams. The drainage features of the AFFFs containing different foam stabilizers are analyzed and compared with each other. The results indicate that AFFF drainage is significantly affected by the type and the concentration of foam stabilizers. The addition of CS and XG to AFFF results in a deceleration of foam drainage, while foam drainage is accelerated by the addition of LA. The variations of surface tension, viscosity, and liquid fraction of foams are the main reasons for the varying foam drainage rate. This study provides a direct connection between chemical components and fundamental properties of AFFF. [GRAPHICS] .
Review of foam stability in porous media: The effect of coarsening

Abstract:Foam stability in porous media is crucial to industrial applications such as enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and CO2 geological sequestration. Though many studies of foam stability in porous media have been carried out, the results from these studies often interpreted the combined effects of drainage, coalescence, and coarsening. This convoluted interpretation does not add to the understanding and contribution of the isolated foam instability mechanisms. Coarsening or Ostwald ripening dominates the evolution of foam structure in porous media due to the scale effect. To bridge the knowledge gap, a comprehensive review of the mass transfer fundamentals and the experimental methods for observing the foam coarsening process in porous media was conducted. Unlike an open system where bubbles can grow freely, the restriction from the geometric confinement in the rock (or rock-like) matrix decreases the foam coarsening rate. The confinement can even reverse the mass transport direction to go from larger bubbles to smaller bubbles (anti-coarsening). Various foam coarsening models based on Fick's diffusion law from the bubble-scale to the bulk-scale are reviewed to better understand the foam coarsening mechanisms. From the reviewed literature, foam coarsening dynamics are dominated by the average bubble size, the liquid film thickness between bubbles, and the gas-liquid interfacial properties. The proper selection of the foaming agents (surfactants and nanoparticles) and the gas phase (N2 and CO2) is critical to control the foam coarsening kinetics. The review of the experimental methods shows that both optical and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) are commonly used in studying the foam coarsening process at the bubble scale. X-ray microtomography (μCT) provides a robust tool to investigate the temporal evolution of trapped gases at the pore scale in real rocks. Microfluidics allow seeing the foam kinetics in 2D and 2.5D feature representations of the porous media. The fabrication of 3D micromodels with controlled wettability remains a challenge. Additionally, the challenge of capturing the dynamics of the foam coarsening process with moving bubbles remains understudied and ill-resolved.
