Abstract:We study a distributed optimal control problem for Navier-Stokes-Voigt equations in three-dimensional bounded domains with convex control constraints and a general cost functional. We prove the existence of optimal solutions, the first-order necessary optimality conditions, and the second-order sufficient optimality conditions as well as the Lipschitz stability of optimal solutions with respect to the initial data.

Abstract:We study the 2D Navier-Stokes equations within the framework of a constraint that ensures energy conservation throughout the solution. By employing the Galerkin approximation method, we demonstrate the existence and uniqueness of a global solution for the constrained Navier-Stokes equation on the torus $\mathbb{T}^2$. Moreover, we investigate the linearized system associated with the 2D-constrained Navier-Stokes equations, exploring its existence and uniqueness. Subsequently, we establish the Lipschitz continuity and Fr$é$chet differentiability properties of the solution mapping. Finally, employing the formal Lagrange method, we prove the first-order necessary optimality conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, we study an optimal control problem for a stationary Navier–Stokes hemivariational inequality with control constraints and its numerical approximation. The hemivariational inequality is the weak formulation of a stationary incompressible fluid flow problem, modeled by the Navier-Stokes equations subject to a nonleak boundary condition and a subdifferential condition of friction type. We investigate the stability of the solution of the hemivariational inequality with respect to perturbations in the density of external force and superpotential, and demonstrate the existence of a solution for the optimal control problem with the external force density as the control. Moreover, we consider the numerical solution of the optimal control problem and show its convergence. As an example and for definiteness, the numerical solution is defined through the finite element method.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the 3D Navier-Stokes-Voigt (NSV) equations with nonlinear damping $|u|^{r-1}u, r\in[1,\infty)$ in bounded and space-periodic domains. We formulate an optimal control problem of minimizing the curl of the velocity field in the energy norm subject to the flow velocity satisfying the damped NSV equation with a distributed control force. The control also needs to obey box-type constraints. For any $r\geq 1,$ the existence and uniqueness of a weak solution is discussed when the domain $\Omega$ is periodic/bounded in $\mathbb R^3$ while a unique strong solution is obtained in the case of space-periodic boundary conditions. We prove the existence of an optimal pair for the control problem. Using the classical adjoint problem approach, we show that the optimal control satisfies a first-order necessary optimality condition given by a variational inequality. Since the optimal control problem is non-convex, we obtain a second-order sufficient optimality condition showing that an admissible control is locally optimal. Further, we derive optimality conditions in terms of adjoint state defined with respect to the growth of the damping term for a global optimal control.

Abstract:In this work, we study an optimal boundary control for the stochastic Allen Cahn Navier Stokes system. The governing system of nonlinear partial differential equations consists of the stochastic Navier Stokes equations with non homogeneous Navier slip boundary condition coupled with a phase-field equation, which is the convective Allen Cahn equation type. We investigate the well posedness of the nonlinear system. More precisely, the existence and uniqueness of global strong solution in dimension two is established and we prove the existence of an optimal solution to the control problem.

Abstract:We investigate in this article Pontryagin's maximum principle for a class of control problems associated with a Cahn–Hilliard–Navier–Stokes model in a two dimensional bounded domain. The model consists of the Navier–Stokes equations for the velocity v, coupled with a Cahn–Hilliard model for the order (phase) parameter . We derive Pontryagin's maximum principle for the control problems assuming that a solution exists. Let us note that the coupling between the Navier–Stokes and the Cahn–Hilliard systems makes the analysis of the control problem more involved.

Abstract:In this paper, we primarily investigate the existence, dependence and optimal control results related to solutions for a system of hemivariational inequalities pertaining to a non -stationary Navier-Stokes equation coupled with an evolution equation of temperature field. The boundary conditions for both the velocity field and temperature field incorporate the generalized Clarke gradient. The existence and uniqueness of the weak solution are established by utilizing the Banach fixed point theorem in conjunction with certain results pertaining to hemivariational inequalities. The finite element method is used to discretize the system of hemivariational inequalities and error bounds are derived. Ultimately, a result confirming the existence of a solution to an optimal control problem for the system of hemivariational inequalities is elucidated.

Abstract:The primary objective of this paper is to study a new class of parabolic quasi variational–hemivariational inequalities. First, we prove a unique solvability result for such class under some mild conditions. Second, we show the existence of an optimal solution for an associated control problem. Finally, these results are applied to a model of quasistatic frictional contact in mechanics.

Abstract:In this work, we study an optimal boundary control problem for a Cahn - Hilliard -Navier-Stokes (CHNS) system in a two dimensional bounded domain. The CHNS system consists of a Navier-Stokes equation governing the fluid velocity field coupled with a convective Cahn - Hilliard equation for the relative concentration of the fluids. An optimal control problem is formulated as the minimization of a cost functional subject to the controlled CHNS system where the control acts on the boundary of the Navier-Stokes equations. We first prove that there exists an optimal boundary control. Then we establish that the control-to-state operator is Frechet differentiable and derive first-order necessary optimality conditions in terms of a variational inequality involving the adjoint system.

Abstract:In this work, we study a boundary control problem for the evolutionary Navier-Stokes equations, under mixed boundary conditions, in two dimensions. The cost functional here considered is of quadratic type, depending on both state and control variables. We provide a comprehensive theoretical framework to address the analysis and the derivation of a system of first-order optimality conditions that characterizes the solution of the control problem. We take advantage of an adequate treatment of the Dirichlet control through the study of the reduced functional. Despite the fact that this approach is quite common, a detailed analysis for the case of mixed boundary conditions with is still lacking. Finally, solution-finding algorithms of descent type are proposed and illustrated with several simulations.

Abstract:The dynamic programming approach for the control of a 3D flow governed by the stochastic Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible fluid in a bounded domain is studied. By a compactness argument, existence of solutions for the associated Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation is proved. Finally, existence of an optimal control through the feedback formula and of an optimal state is discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a state constrained optimal control problem governed by the transient Stokes equations. The state constraint is given by an L2 functional in space, which is required to fulfill a pointwise bound in time. The discretization scheme for the Stokes equations consists of inf-sup stable finite elements in space and a discontinuous Galerkin method in time, for which we have recently established best approximation type error estimates. Using these error estimates, for the discrete control problem we establish error estimates and as a by-product we show an improved regularity for the optimal control. We complement our theoretical analysis with numerical results.

Abstract:We study a class of optimal stochastic control problems arising from the control of movements. Exact solutions are first presented for linear cases for both the during- and post-movement control problem, depending on a parameter @a0. It is found that for the Langevin type equation and for the post-movement control case, a non-degenerate solution exists only when @a1/2. For the Langevin type equation and for the during-movement control, a non-degenerate solution is found when @a1. For the post-movement control and the Hamiltonian type equation, an optimal control signal is obtained and is non-degenerate when @a1/2. Again for the during-movement control, we find an optimal non-degenerate control signal when @a1. All results are then generalized to nonlinear control cases (the first order perturbation of linear cases). Numerical examples are included to illustrate the applications of our results.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the lowest-order nonconforming virtual element approximation of optimal control problem governed by Stokes equations. Based on the lowest-order virtual element approximation of the state equation and variational discretization of the control variable, we build up the virtual element discrete scheme and derive the discrete first order optimality system. A priori error estimates for the state, adjoint state and control variables in and norms are derived. Moreover, the presented method can also handle general polygonal meshes with arbitrary nodes (including non-convex and degenerate elements). Numerical experiments are carried out to confirm the convergence analysis and illustrate the theoretical findings.

The cost functional enhances temporal sparsity of the controls, which implies that the optimal controls shut down in finite time. The problem formulation also includes explicit constraints on the control which may be non-smooth and non-affine.

Abstract:We consider a velocity tracking problem for stochastic Navier-Stokes equations in a 2D-bounded domain. The control acts on the boundary through an injection-suction device with uncertainty, which acts in accordance with the non-homogeneous Navier-slip boundary conditions. After establishing a suitable stability result for the solution of the stochastic state equation, we prove the well-posedness of the stochastic linearized state equation and show that the Gâteaux derivative of the control-to-state mapping corresponds to the unique solution of the linearized equation. Next, we study the stochastic backward adjoint equation and establish a duality relation between the solutions of the forward linearized equation and the backward adjoint equation. Finally, we derive the first-order optimality conditions.

Abstract:In this work, a theoretical framework is developed to study the control constrained distributed optimal control of a stationary double diffusion model presented in [Burger, Mendez, Ruiz-Baier, SINUM (2019), 57:1318-1343]. For the control problem, as the source term belongs to a weaker space, a new solvability analysis of the governing equation is presented using Faedo- Galerkin approximation techniques. Some new minimal regularity results for the governing equation are established on two and three-dimensional bounded Lipschitz domains and are of independent interest. Moreover, we show the existence of an optimal control with quadratic type cost functional, study the Frechet differentiability properties of the control-to-state map and establish the first-order necessary optimality conditions corresponding to the optimal control problem.

Abstract:We study a control problem governed by a semilinear parabolic equation with pointwise control and state constraints imposed at every point of the space-time cylinder. We obtain second order sufficient optimality conditions for local optimality in the sense of $L^2(Q)$. Our results are valid for spatial domains of dimension less than or equal to three.
