Abstract:We present analytic expressions of the Coulomb interaction between a spherical and a deformed nuclei which are valid for all separation distance. We demonstrate their significant deviations from commonly used formulae in the region inside the Coulomb radius, and show that they remove various shortcomings of the conventional formulae.

Abstract:In this paper,the nuclear longitudinal form factors are systematically studied from the intrinsic charge multipoles.For axially deformed nuclei,two different types of density profiles are used to describe their charge distributions.For the same charge distributions expanded with different basis functions,the corresponding longitudinal form factors are derived and compared with each other.Results show the multipoles C λ of longitudinal form factors are independent of the basis functions of charge distributions.Further numerical calculations of longitudinal form factors of 12 C indicates that the C 0 multipole reflects the contributions of spherical components of all nonorthogonal basis functions.For deformed nuclei,their charge RMS radii can also be determined accurately by the C 0 measurement.The studies in this paper examine the model-independent properties of electron scattering,which are useful for interpreting electron scattering experiments on exotic deformed nuclei.

Abstract:Background: Combining the relativistic mean-field (RMF) model and distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) method, Coulomb form factors for elastic electron scattering have been studied for several stable nuclei (Pb-208, Ca-40, S-32, and Mg-24) with a methodology that can be extended to exotic nuclei.Purpose: Previous studies on nuclear Coulomb form factors by the RMF + DWBA method were mainly based on the spherical RMF model. This work aims to further extend the studies to the axially deformed RMF model.Method: The nuclear proton density distributions are first calculated by the deformed RMF model. Next, the axially deformed density distributions are expanded into multipole components. With the spherical. rho(0) components, the Coulomb form factors of even-even nuclei are calculated by the DWBA method.Results: For spherical nuclei, the nuclear Coulomb form factors obtained with the deformed RMF model almost coincide with those from the spherical RMF model. For deformed nuclei, Coulomb form factors obtained with the deformed RMF model agree better with the experimental data at the diffraction minima and at high momentum transfers.Conclusions: Results indicate the proton densities calculated from the axially deformed RMF model are valid and reasonable. The electron-scattering experiments will soon be available for exotic nuclei, and the studies in this paper are helpful to interpret the experimental data of deformed exotic nuclei.
Coulomb Form Factors of Odd-A Nuclei Within an Axially Deformed Relativistic Mean-Field Model

Abstract:Background: The nuclear Coulomb form factor vertical bar FC(q)vertical bar(2) is a useful tool to study nuclear structure. For spherical nuclei, vertical bar FC(q)vertical bar(2) can be calculated by combining the spherical relativistic mean-field (RMF) model and the distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) method.Purpose: In a previous paper, the axially deformed RMF model + DWBA method was successfully applied to study the Coulomb form factors of deformed even-even nuclei. In this paper, we further extend this method to study the Coulomb form factors of deformed odd-A nuclei.Method: First, the charge distributions of odd-A nuclei are calculated with the deformed RMF model and expanded into multipole components. Next, with the multipole moment charge distributions, the Coulomb multipoles C0, C2, and C4 are calculated. Finally, by summing over Coulomb multipoles required, the Coulomb form factors of odd-A nuclei can be obtained.Results: For deformed odd-A nuclei, the theoretical Coulomb form factors calculated from the deformed RMF charge densities are in better agreement with the experimental data. For nuclei with J >= 1, the diffraction minima of Coulomb form factors are much flatter, which is due to the contributions of quadrupole charge distributions.Conclusions: Results indicate that the axially deformed RMF model can give reasonable descriptions for multipole moment charge distributions of odd-A nuclei. The method in this paper can provide a useful guide for future experiments of electron scattering off exotic odd-A nuclei.
Charge Form Factors of Exotic Nuclei in Deformed Hartree–Fock–Bogolyubov Calculations

Abstract:With the development of electron scattering experiments off exotic nuclei, many theoretical researches have been devoted to investigate the nuclear charge form factors vertical bar F-C(q)vertical bar(2) recently. In this paper, we extend the studies of electron scattering by combing the deformed Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov (HFB) model and the distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) method. Comparing the theoretical vertical bar F-C(q)vertical bar(2) with the experimental data, the validity of the deformed HFB model to describe the nuclear density distributions can be verified for both the spherical and deformed nuclei. By further investigating the vertical bar F-C(q)vertical bar(2) of the isotopic chain, the effects of the nuclear deformation on the changing trends of vertical bar F-C(q)vertical bar(2) of isotopes are provided. For even-even Xe isotopes, the nuclear deformation can influence the positions of the diffraction minima of vertical bar F-C(q)vertical bar(2.) For odd-A Cs isotopes, the nuclear deformation can affect the values of diffraction minima of vertical bar F-C(q)vertical bar(2). The studies in this paper can offer useful guidances for the coming electron scattering experiments on unstable nuclei.

Abstract:Background: The positions of diffraction minima of Coulomb form factors vertical bar F-c(q)vertical bar(2) are important landmarks for electron scattering experiments, which are sensitive to the nuclear size. For the isotopic chain, previous studies show the minima of vertical bar F-c(q)vertical bar(2) have an outward shift as the target nucleus moves to the proton-rich side. Purpose: Based on previous studies, the Coulomb form factors of Xe isotopes are further investigated by the deformed relativistic mean-field (RMF) model and distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) method. Method: First, the nuclear charge density distributions are calculated by the constrained calculations of deformed RMF model. Next, the axially deformed density distributions are expanded into multipole components. With the charge density multipoles, the Coulomb form factors of Xe isotopes are calculated by the DWBA method. Results: For the nucleus with deformation, there are differences on the Coulomb form factors calculated from the spherical and deformed RMF models. For the Xe isotopic chain, the changing trend of vertical bar F-c(q)vertical bar(2) from the deformed RMF model is different from the results from the spherical RMF model at high momentum transfers. Conclusions: The minima of vertical bar F-c(q)vertical bar(2) of isotopes are directly influenced by the nuclear deformation parameter beta(2), not just the charge radius R-c. For the studies of electron scattering, the nuclear deformation should be taken into account, especially in high momentum transfers.

Abstract:The expression for the radial moments < r(n)>(c) of the nuclear charge density has been discussed under the plane wave Born approximation method recently, which is significant to investigate the nuclear surface thickness and neutron distribution radius. In this paper, we extend the studies of extracting second-order moment < r(2)>(c) and fourth-order moment < r(4)>(c) from the Coulomb form factors vertical bar F-C(q)vertical bar(2) by the distortedwave Born approximation (DWBA) at the small momentum transfer q region. Based on the relativistic mean-field calculations, the DWBA form factors F-C(DW)(q) are expanded into q(4), where the corresponding charge distributions are corrected by the contributions of neutron and spin-orbit densities. In the small q region, it is found that the experimental vertical bar F-C(q)vertical bar(2) can be well reproduced by considering the contributions of the < r(4)>(c) at the small q region. Through further analyzing the second-order and fourth-order expansion coefficients of the F-C(DW)(q), the relationship between the expansion coefficients and proton number Z is obtained. By the relationship, we extract the < r(2)>(c) and < r(4)>(c) from the limited experimental data of form factors at the small q region. Within the permissible range of error, the extracted < r(n)> c are consistent with the experimental data in this paper.
Realistic evaluation of Coulomb potential in spherical nuclei and test of the traditional approach

Abstract:A realistic evaluation of Coulomb potential has been made for some selected nuclei using the available model-independent data for the charge density and the recent development of Coulomb energy-density functional. Within the Woods-Saxon potential as a nuclear component, we are able to quantify the differences in proton single-particle energies due to the differences from the model-independent data of the uniform distribution, the two-parameter Fermi function, as well as the charge density obtained from a microscopic Hartree-Fock calculation using the effective Skyrme interaction. The obtained energy differences are generally small in magnitude, namely about 100~keV or less if the parameters of the charge density models are appropriately determined. Considerable larger differences appear when the last occupied state is highly filled and, at the same time, has a small orbital angular momentum. Sulfur isotopes ($Z=16$) are a perfect example of these nuclei. Unfortunately, despite its simplicity, the uniform distribution cannot be used for evaluating the Coulomb exchange term within a well-established method because it is not differentiable at the surface of a nucleus. Traditionally, the missing of exchange term is corrected for by simply excluding the last-proton contribution to the direct term. %% We also investigate this approach and find that its effect is simply an introduction of the factor $(Z-1)/Z$ into the Coulomb direct term. From medium to heavy nuclei (typically beyond the $sd$ shell) the resulting proton levels are 300-800~keV higher than those obtained with the exact Fock term. The result for lighter nuclei tends to be opposite because the factor $(Z-1)/Z$ decreases rapidly towards the limit of $Z\to 1$. Therefore, this traditional approach should be avoided for a precision nuclear structure calculation.

Abstract:We study the influence of the Coulomb force on the Fermi beta-decays in nuclei. This work is composed of two main parts. In the first part, we calculate the Coulomb corrections to super-allowed beta decay. We use the notion of the isovector monopole state and the self-consistent charge-exchange Random Phase Approximation to compute the correction. In the second part of this work, we examine the influence of the anti-analog state on isospin mixing in the isobaric analog state and the correction to the beta-decay Fermi transition.

Global calculations on the microscopic energies and nuclear deformations: Isospin dependence of the spin-orbit coupling

Abstract:The microscopic energies and nuclear deformations of about 1850 even-even nuclei are calculated systematically within the macroscopic-microscopic framework using three Woods-Saxon parameterizations, with different isospin dependences, which were constructed mainly for nuclear spectroscopy calculations. Calculations are performed in the deformation space $(\beta_2, \gamma, \beta_4)$. Both the monopole and doubly stretched quadrupole interactions are considered for the pairing channel. The ground state deformations obtained by the three calculations are quite similar to each other. Large differences are seen mainly in neutron-rich nuclei and in superheavy nuclei. Systematic calculations on the shape-coexisting second minima are also presented. As for the microscopic energies of the ground states, the results are also very close to each other. Only in a few cases the difference is larger than 2 MeV. The total binding energy is estimated by adding the macroscopic energy provided by the usual liquid drop model with its parameters fitted through the least square root and minimax criteria. Calculations are also compared with the results of other macroscopic-microscopic mass models. All the three calculations give similar values for the deformations, microscopic energies and binding energies of most nuclei. One may expect to have a better understanding of the isospin dependence of the spin-orbital force with more data on proton- and neutron-rich nuclei.

Abstract:The density distributions of large nuclei are typically modeled with a Woods–Saxon distribution characterized by a radius R0 and skin depth a. Deformation parameters β are then introduced to describe non-spherical nuclei using an expansion in spherical harmonics R0(1+β2Y20+β4Y40). But when a nucleus is non-spherical, the R0 and a inferred from electron scattering experiments that integrate over all nuclear orientations cannot be used directly as the parameters in the Woods–Saxon distribution. In addition, the β2 values typically derived from the reduced electric quadrupole transition probability B(E2)↑ are not directly related to the β2 values used in the spherical harmonic expansion. B(E2)↑ is more accurately related to the intrinsic quadrupole moment Q0 than to β2. One can however calculate Q0 for a given β2 and then derive B(E2)↑ from Q0. In this paper we calculate and tabulate the R0, a, and β2 values that when used in a Woods–Saxon distribution, will give results consistent with electron scattering data. We then present calculations of the second and third harmonic participant eccentricity (ε2 and ε3) with the new and old parameters. We demonstrate that ε3 is particularly sensitive to a and argue that using the incorrect value of a has important implications for the extraction of viscosity to entropy ratio (η/s) from the QGP created in Heavy Ion collisions.

Abstract:Based on the potential-energy-surface calculation, the impact of different deformation degrees of freedom on single-particle structure and binding energies in nuclei around Nd, located on one of the hexadecapole-deformation islands, is analyzed in a multi-dimensional deformation space. Various energy maps, curves and tables are presented to indicate nuclear properties. The calculated equilibrium deformations and binding energies with different potential parameters are compared with experimental data and other theories. It is found that the inclusion of the hexadecapole deformations, especially the axial one, can improve the theoretical description of both nuclear shapes and masses. In addition, our calculated potential-energy-curve shows that there exists a critical deformation-point -- the triaxial (hexadecapole) deformation-effect can be neglectable but the hexadecapole (triaxial) one plays an important role before (after) such critical point.

Abstract:The deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum with the density-dependent meson-nucleon couplings is developed. The formulism is briefly presented with the emphasis on handling the density-dependent couplings, meson fields, and potentials in an axially deformed system with the partial wave method. Taking the neutron-rich nucleus ${}^{38}$Mg as an example, the newly developed code is verified by the spherical relativistic continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov calculations, where only the spherical components of the densities are considered. When the deformation is included self-consistently, it is shown that the spherical components of density-dependent coupling strengths are dominant, while the contributions from low-order deformed components are not negligible.

Abstract:The microscopic center-of-mass (c.m.) correction energies for nuclei ranging from Oxygen to Calcium are systematically calculated by both spherical and axially deformed relativistic mean-field (RMF) models with the effective interaction PK1. The microscopic c.m. correction energies strongly depend on the isospin as well as deformation and deviate from the phenomenological ones. The deformation effect is discussed in detail by comparing the deformed with the spherical RMF calculation. It is found that the direct and exchange terms of the c.m. correction energies are strongly correlated with the density distribution of nuclei and are suppressed in the deformed case.

Relativistic Hartree-Fock model for axial-symmetric nuclei with quadruple and octupole deformations

Abstract:\textbf{Background:} The initial observation of a negative-parity state in proximity to the ground state in the 1950s marked the advent of extensive research into octupole deformed nuclei. Since then, the physics of octupole deformed nuclei has consistently held a special interest within the field of nuclear physics. In the present era, with the advent of sophisticated radioactive ion beam (RIB) facilities and advanced detectors, coupled with the remarkable capabilities of high-performance computing, extensive and intensive explorations are being conducted from both experimental and theoretical perspectives to elucidate the physics of octupole deformed nuclei. \textbf{Results:} This work establishes the OD-RHF model, which provides a reliable tool for studying octupole nuclei over a fairly wide range. The reliability of the newly developed OD-RHF model is illustrated by taking the octupole nucleus $^{144}$Ba as an example. Furthermore, the octupole deformation effects in $^{144}$Ba is verified by using the RHF Lagrangians PKO$i$ ($i=1,2,3$) and the RMF one DD-ME2. The intrusion of the neutron $1i_{13/2}$ and proton $1h_{11/2}$ components is demonstrated to play an essential role in determining the notable octupole deformation of $^{144}$Ba using PKO$i$ ($i=1,2,3$) and DD-ME2. It is indicated that the Fock terms play an important role in stabilizing the octupole deformation. More specifically, due to the repulsive tensor coupling between the intrude components and the core of $^{144}$Ba, the tensor force component carried by the $\pi$-PV coupling, that contributes only via the Fock terms, plays an opposing role in the formation of the octupole deformation of $^{144}$Ba.

Abstract:We present a theoretical approach to study the dynamics of spherical, cylindrical and ellipsoidal charge distributions under their self-Coulomb field and a stochastic force due to collisions and random motions of charged particles. The approach is based on finding the current density of the charge distribution from the charge-current continuity equation and determining the drift velocities of the particles. The latter can be used either to derive the Lagrangian of the system, or to write Newton's equation of motion with the Lorentz force. We develop a kinetic theory to include the stochastic force due to random motions of electrons in our model. To demonstrate the efficacy of our method, we apply it to various charge distributions and compare our results to N-body simulations. We show that our method reproduces the well-known emittance term in the envelope equation of uniform spherical and cylindrical charge distributions with correct coefficients. We use our model for the gravitational collapse of an ideal gas as well as the cyclotron dynamics of a cylindrical charge distribution in a uniform magnetic field and propose a method to measure the emittance of electron beams.
Nuclear charge densities in spherical and deformed nuclei: towards precise calculations of charge radii

Abstract:Background: Precise measurements of atomic transitions affected by electron-nucleus hyperfine interactions offer sensitivity to explore basic properties of the atomic nucleus and study fundamental symmetries, including the search for new physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. Such measurements impose higher precision requirements on a theoretical description. Purpose: The nuclear charge density is composed of the proton point distribution folded with the nucleonic charge distributions. The latter induce subtle relativistic corrections due to the coupling of nucleon magnetic moments with the nuclear spin-orbit density. We assess the precision of nuclear charge density calculations by studying the behavior of relativistic corrections. Methods: The calculations are performed using Skyrme energy density functionals and density-dependent pairing force. We used the general expression for the spin-orbit form factor that is valid for spherical and deformed nuclei. Results: We studied the impact of various correction terms on the charge radii, fourth radial moments, diffraction radii, and surface thickness of spherical and deformed nuclei. The spin-orbit corrections to charge radial moments and surface thickness show strong shell fluctuations which impact high-precision predictions of isotopic shifts. Conclusions: To establish reliable constraints on the existence of new forces from isotope shift measurements,precise calculations of nuclear charge densities of deformed nuclei are needed. The proper inclusion of the spin-orbit charge density and other correction terms is essential when aiming at extraction of subtle effects which become particularly visible in isotopic trends.
